Why a game can work on PC but fail on Steam Deck
A typical gaming PC runs Windows, while Steam Deck runs SteamOS. A game that launches on Windows may not offer a native Linux version, or its Windows version may need Proton, Steam’s compatibility tool, to run on the Deck. Proton is a possible route, not a guarantee. If Steam reports “Game is not available on your current platform,” it means the game is unsupported on the current operating system; check the game’s supported operating systems and hardware requirements on its Steam store page.

Steam Deck compatibility labels are useful clues, not a diagnosis of an individual launch failure. Steam describes them in its compatibility guidance:
- Verified: Steam indicates the game meets its Deck compatibility criteria.
- Playable: The game works, but may require manual configuration.
- Unsupported: Steam indicates the game does not currently meet its compatibility criteria.
- Unknown: Steam has not tested the game; this does not necessarily mean it is broken.
Open the game’s store page and review its Steam Deck Compatibility section for the specific criteria or limitations. Compatibility can change as games, SteamOS, and Proton are updated.

Try these fixes in order
After each change, retry the same game and note what happened. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to identify whether a step helped.
1. Update and restart the Deck
- Install any available SteamOS updates through the Deck’s system settings.
- Restart the Deck, then try launching the game again.
Steam recommends updates and a restart among its early troubleshooting steps for software instability. If you use third-party applications installed in Desktop Mode, temporarily exit or disable them and test the game again; background software can be a factor.

2. Try a different Proton version for this game
- In the Steam Library, highlight the game and open its menu.
- Select Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose a current Proton version, then retry the game.
Steam recommends trying the latest Proton version. Record the version you selected so you can compare results or return to the previous setting. If the game was installed as a Linux build, forcing Proton may prompt Steam to download the Windows build instead. Allow that download to complete before testing.
3. Verify the game’s installed files
- Open the game’s Properties in the Library.
- Select Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification to finish; Steam says it may take several minutes.
Verification checks the local installation and can replace damaged or missing game files. Steam notes that a file may fail verification normally if it is a local configuration file that should not be replaced.

If the game still will not launch
Check the exact error rather than assuming that a Windows PC result proves the Deck should run the same build. For an unsupported-platform message, consult the store page’s operating-system and hardware requirements. If the game is marked Unknown, that means it has not been tested by Steam, not that a particular fix is known.

- The game’s name and the exact error message or behavior, such as returning to the Library without an error.
- Your Steam Deck model and SteamOS version.
- The Proton version you tested, if any.
- Whether the game is installed on internal or removable storage.
- Which troubleshooting steps you tried and what changed after each one.
Steam’s general game-launch guidance also recommends checking requirements, updating the operating system and drivers where applicable, verifying files, disabling non-essential software, and contacting the developer for title-specific help. On Deck, follow SteamOS’s managed update path rather than applying generic Windows driver advice.

Use SteamOS recovery only for broader problems
If other system problems point beyond one game, Steam provides separate recovery options in its SteamOS recovery instructions. Repair SteamOS attempts to preserve games and personal content. Re-image Device fully resets the device and replaces its data, so back up important local content before using it. These are system recovery operations, not routine first steps for a single game. If recovery is necessary, Steam’s instructions call for a USB key of at least 8GB to prepare recovery media.
