Fix the symptom in order: restart Steam and your computer, clear Steam’s download cache, repair the library, and verify files for download or installation failures; verify files and check requirements, drivers, operating-system support, and security software when a demo will not launch; and confirm Steam Cloud support before troubleshooting missing saves. These are general Steam remedies, not a diagnosis of one particular demo.
Start by identifying what failed
The right fix depends on where the demo stops. A download problem means Steam cannot obtain or finish writing the files. A launch problem means the demo is installed but closes, does nothing, or reports a missing component. A save problem means the demo runs but progress is absent, has reverted, or will not synchronize between computers.

Before changing anything, note the demo’s exact error message, your operating system, whether the problem started after a Steam client, driver, network, storage, or security-software change, and whether another computer may still contain a newer save. Do not uninstall a demo or delete its userdata while investigating a missing save; the only remaining local copy may be there.

Work through these checks from least disruptive to more diagnostic. Steam describes permissions, corrupted storage, antivirus interference, and network conditions as possible causes, so a single remedy cannot be guaranteed for every machine.

1. Restart Steam and the computer
Exit Steam completely rather than only closing the window. Reopen it, sign in, and retry the demo. If the transfer is still stuck, restart the computer and try again. A restart can clear a transient client state and release a file or storage lock that prevented Steam from continuing.
2. Clear Steam’s download cache
- Open the Steam menu.
- Choose Settings, then Downloads.
- Select Clear Download Cache and confirm.
- Sign in again when Steam asks, then start the demo download.
Steam says clearing this cache can help games that will not download or start and does not remove installed games. It does sign you out, so have your account credentials or sign-in method available.
3. Repair the Steam library folder
A library folder must be writable. Broken permissions can leave a download permanently queued or make installation fail after files have been transferred.

- Select the library containing the demo.
- Open the library’s options menu and choose the repair option shown by your Steam client.
- Retry the download after the repair completes.
If the library is on an external or secondary drive, make sure the drive is connected, mounted, unlocked, and has free space. Do not assume the space shown for the whole computer is also available on the selected library drive.
4. Verify files for a partial or completed installation
Use verification when the demo appears installed, reaches a percentage and then fails, or repeatedly redownloads the same files.

- Open Library.
- Right-click the demo and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
Steam compares the local installation with the files it expects and replaces damaged or missing items. The check may take several minutes. Let it finish before launching the demo or interrupting the download.
5. Try another download region
Content servers in your current region may be slow, overloaded, or experiencing a hardware failure. In Steam > Settings > Downloads, select a different Download Region, restart the download, and observe whether the transfer progresses. Choose a nearby region first; this is a troubleshooting test, not a promise that a distant region will be faster.

- Read the complete Steam error instead of relying on an icon or a truncated notification.
- Confirm that the destination drive has enough free space for the download and temporary extraction files.
- Check that the account running Steam can write to the library folder.
- Review antivirus or endpoint-security notifications for a blocked, quarantined, or removed Steam file.
- If you already have access to another drive, install the demo into a separate Steam library there. A successful installation on that drive points toward a problem with the original drive, its permissions, or its filesystem; it does not mean you need to buy new hardware.
Do not disable security protection as a first resort. If it reports a quarantine, identify the exact file and follow the security product’s documented restore or allow process only when you are satisfied the file is legitimate. Verify the demo again after restoring a file.
Steam demo won’t launch after installation
A demo that installs successfully can still fail before its window appears. Steam’s general launch guidance separates Windows, Linux, and macOS because supported components and troubleshooting steps differ by operating system. Start with the reversible checks below.
1. Restart, then verify the installation
Restart Steam and the computer once. Next, repeat Library > right-click the demo > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Corrupted files created during download or extraction are a common launch cause. Wait for verification to finish even if Steam reports only a small discrepancy.

2. Check the demo’s requirements and operating-system support
Open the demo’s store page and compare its listed minimum requirements with your computer. Check the required operating system separately. Hardware at or near the minimum can contribute to startup failures, and an otherwise powerful computer cannot make an unsupported operating system compatible.
- On Windows, confirm the installed Windows version matches the store-page support statement.
- On macOS, check the required macOS release and whether the demo supports your processor architecture.
- On Linux, confirm that the developer lists Linux support. If the demo is not native, Steam notes that Proton may be an option for some unsupported games, but compatibility is not guaranteed; consult the specific game’s community reports or Proton issue guidance rather than treating Proton as a universal fix.
3. Update the operating system and graphics drivers
Install pending operating-system updates and the current graphics driver supplied for your hardware. Restart after installing them, then try the demo again. If the launch failure began immediately after a driver update, record that detail; it helps the developer distinguish a driver regression from a damaged installation.
4. Temporarily close non-essential software
Overlays, capture tools, hardware monitors, aggressive performance tuners, and other background utilities can interfere with a game process. Close non-essential programs, restart Steam, and test the demo with only required system services running. Re-enable software one item at a time after a successful launch so you can identify a conflict without leaving your normal tools disabled permanently.
5. Handle a missing-executable warning carefully
If Steam says an executable is missing, first inspect your security software’s quarantine and event history. A security product may have blocked or removed a file during installation or first launch. Do not assume the warning is false and do not add a broad exclusion automatically. Use the security software’s own interface to assess the file, restore it only when appropriate, and then run Steam’s file verification again.
6. Complete any secondary installer
Some demos depend on a secondary runtime or installer stored inside the game folder. If that installer was canceled, blocked, or failed, the demo may not launch correctly. Recheck the game folder for the installer named in the game’s support instructions and run it according to those instructions. Afterward, verify the demo’s files and test again.

7. Escalate when general Steam checks fail
Steam Support explains that launch failures can have many causes across hardware and software configurations. If restart, verification, requirements, updates, non-essential-software checks, and security review do not help, contact the demo’s developer. Include the exact error, operating system and version, hardware details relevant to the requirements, Steam’s verification result, security-software actions, and any crash or log file the developer requests. The developer can identify demo-specific bugs, unsupported configurations, or an installer problem that general Steam guidance cannot diagnose.

Do not begin by assuming that every Steam demo has cloud saves. Steam Cloud use is game-dependent, and many games do not use it for saves. Check the demo’s store page for a Steam Cloud indication or ask the developer whether this particular demo writes saves to Steam Cloud.
1. Establish whether a cloud save exists
Steam Support describes Steam Cloud this way: “The Steam Cloud allows games and the platform to utilize cloud storage hosted by Steam.” The surrounding guidance explains that a game may use that storage for settings, saves, statistics, and other data, but the game determines whether those features are enabled. If the demo does not support Cloud, a second computer will not automatically receive its local saves.
2. Resolve a cloud conflict by comparing timestamps
When Steam presents a local-versus-cloud conflict, compare both timestamps with your actual play history. Choose the copy that represents the latest progress you intend to keep. A newer timestamp is not automatically the correct choice if, for example, you played offline on one computer after the other computer had already synchronized.
Offline play can delay synchronization. If Steam cannot sync, address the network or temporary service problem before launching again. Ignoring a sync warning and continuing to play can create another conflict and make it harder to identify the newest save.
3. Treat demo-to-full-game transfer as optional
Steamworks documents demos as separate application IDs. A developer can configure a demo to share cloud storage with the full game, but that configuration is optional. Therefore, a demo save transfers to the full game only when the developer has implemented and enabled the required arrangement. Do not delete the demo or its local data until the developer confirms how that title handles carryover.
4. Try the computer that may still contain the latest local save
If an older computer is available, start Steam on it while connected to the internet and allow the demo to synchronize. Check its local progress before accepting a cloud version from another machine. Steam says lost saves are not likely to be recoverable by Steam Support, so preserving the machine that may still hold the latest copy is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the demo.
5. Locate local userdata without editing it
A technically comfortable reader or a developer can inspect Steam’s default userdata locations when investigating whether a local save remains:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
The Steam Cloud log is stored under Steam’s logs directory. These locations are diagnostic references, not instructions to delete, rename, or edit files. Copying a folder for safekeeping before any investigation is safer than modifying the original. The correct subfolder and save format vary by game, so ask the developer before changing anything.

What not to do while troubleshooting
- Do not repeatedly delete and reinstall the demo before checking whether a local save is still present.
- Do not choose a cloud-conflict version by guesswork; compare timestamps with your play history.
- Do not add blanket antivirus exclusions or assume every quarantine is a false positive.
- Do not edit or delete Steam userdata because a save is not immediately visible.
- Do not treat a different download region, Proton, or a second drive as a guaranteed cure; each is a diagnostic step with a limited purpose.
- Do not expect a universal success rate. Steam’s official guidance does not identify one cause or a guaranteed fix for all demos and computer configurations.
Information to send the game developer
General Steam checks end when the remaining problem is specific to the demo. Send the developer a concise reproducible report:
- The demo’s exact name and version shown by Steam.
- Your operating system and version, processor and graphics hardware when relevant, and whether the system meets the store-page requirements.
- The symptom: download error, launch behavior, missing executable, save rollback, or cloud conflict.
- The exact error text, when it appears, and whether it occurs every time.
- What changed immediately before the failure, such as a driver, Steam client, network, storage, or security-software update.
- Which steps you completed, including cache clearing, library repair, file verification, requirement checks, and security review.
- For missing progress, whether Steam Cloud is listed for the demo, the local and cloud timestamps, whether you played offline, and whether the original computer is still available.
This evidence helps the developer separate a platform-wide installation issue from a title-specific bug and avoids losing useful diagnostic files during repeated reinstalls.
Bottom line
For a Steam demo that will not download, clear the download cache and repair the library before testing another region or drive. For a demo that will not launch, verify files, confirm operating-system and hardware support, update drivers, and check security software for blocked files. For missing progress, first determine whether the demo uses Steam Cloud, preserve any computer that may hold the newest local save, and resolve conflicts by timestamp. If these general steps do not resolve the symptom, the game’s developer is the right source for a title-specific fix.
