How to Fix a Steam Deck Plugin That Disappears or Stops Loading

The fix depends on what disappeared. If the Decky Loader icon or menu is gone after a SteamOS update, reinstall Decky Loader from Desktop Mode, choosing the latest stable release first. If Decky still opens and only one plugin fails, use Decky’s settings to update, reload, or uninstall that plugin. These are different failures and should not be treated as one.

Identify which part failed

Decky Loader is a community homebrew plugin launcher for Steam Deck. A SteamOS update can remove or disable the loader interface, while an individual plugin can fail even though Decky itself remains available. Start with the symptom that matches your screen.

What you see What it usually means First action
There is no Decky entry or icon in Quick Access The loader itself is missing or failed to start Switch to Desktop Mode and rerun Decky’s installer
Decky opens, but one plugin is absent, blank, or stuck loading The individual plugin needs an update, reload, or removal Open Decky settings and manage that plugin
Decky opens, but several plugins fail together The loader may need an update, or a shared conflict may be preventing plugins from starting Check for a loader update, reload as requested, then investigate port conflicts
The problem returns after every SteamOS update The update may be removing or disabling the loader installation again Repeat the stable reinstall path and escalate with version details if it keeps recurring

Do not begin with a factory reset, a SteamOS reimage, or destructive cleanup. Decky’s own documentation recommends reinstalling the loader, not erasing your Deck, for this failure.

Before you start: equipment, access, and cost

The documented recovery does not require a purchase, subscription, or paid repair utility. You need access to Desktop Mode and the official Decky Loader installer. A USB-C keyboard and mouse can make typing and navigation more comfortable, but they are optional. Decky’s installation instructions say that the right trackpad and Steam Deck’s on-screen keyboard can be used instead.

Keep the Deck on the normal SteamOS update channel unless you have deliberately chosen another channel. Have the Deck connected to the internet before rerunning an installer or downloading a plugin update, and close unrelated Desktop Mode applications while you troubleshoot. Do not download a replacement installer from a random forum, file host, or script pasted into a chat; use the current Decky Loader project and its release choices.

Restore Decky Loader after a SteamOS update

Decky’s official README explicitly warns that the loader can disappear during SteamOS updates: “Sometimes Decky will disappear on SteamOS updates.” The supported recovery path is to rerun the installer from Desktop Mode.

  1. Enter Desktop Mode. Open the Steam menu, choose Power, and select Switch to Desktop. A keyboard and mouse can make this easier, but they are optional; Decky’s instructions note that the right trackpad and the on-screen keyboard can be used instead.
  2. Open the official Decky Loader project. Use the installer provided by the Decky Loader project rather than a reposted script or an unknown download. The project’s current README is the authority for the installer and release channels.
  3. Run the installer again. When the installer asks which channel to use, select the latest stable release first. The project calls this channel “Latest Release” and says it is intended for most users.
  4. Return to Gaming Mode. Switch back to Gaming Mode after installation and open Quick Access with the “…” button. Check whether the Decky entry is present.
  5. Allow the loader to finish its first start. If Decky appears but a plugin list takes time to populate, give it a moment before changing several settings at once. Then open the Decky menu and its settings gear to check for updates.
  6. Use the prerelease channel only as a fallback. If reinstalling the stable release does not restore Decky, rerun the installer and try the latest prerelease. Decky describes prereleases as intended for plugin developers and warns that they may be unstable. This is a troubleshooting fallback, not the normal choice for everyday use.
  7. Recheck after a Steam restart only when requested. Some installations ask for a reload or Steam restart before the new loader state is visible. Accept that request, then check Quick Access again.

Do not delete plugin data as a first response. Reinstalling the loader is not the same as wiping the Deck, and the project does not recommend a factory reset for a missing Decky menu. If the stable installer restores the menu, stay on stable unless you have a specific reason to test prerelease behavior.

Fix one plugin when Decky still opens

When the Decky interface is available, isolate the failing plugin instead of reinstalling the entire loader immediately. The official README directs users to Decky’s settings gear for plugin management.

  1. In Gaming Mode, press the “…” Quick Access button.
  2. Enter Decky.
  3. Open the settings gear.
  4. Check for a Decky loader update if one is offered. A June 2026 troubleshooting guide also advises checking this screen before changing individual plugins.
  5. Open the affected plugin’s entry and install its available update.
  6. If the plugin still does not appear or load, use the reload option. Confirm the reload, or the requested Steam restart, when Decky asks for it.
  7. If the plugin remains broken, uninstall that plugin from the same settings area, restart Decky if prompted, and test whether the rest of the menu works.

After each action, test the plugin before performing the next one. This gives you a clear last change if the behavior improves or worsens. If the plugin is missing entirely, check the installed-plugin list rather than assuming the loader is gone. If it is listed but shows a blank panel or an endless spinner, update and reload it first.

Uninstalling removes the plugin’s own files, but it may not remove every file that plugin created elsewhere on the system. That means uninstalling is a way to isolate a faulty extension, not a guarantee that all of its settings or generated data will disappear.

If other plugins work after the removal, the loader is probably healthy and the next step belongs to the affected plugin’s maintainer. Each Decky plugin is maintained by a different developer, so a general Decky reinstall cannot resolve every plugin-specific error.

Check for port conflicts

Decky’s README identifies software using ports 8080 or 1337 as a common source of loader problems. A conflict can stop Decky from starting correctly or make the problem return after a reboot. It does not explain every missing plugin, so check it after the stable reinstall path or when the same failure repeatedly comes back.

Syncthing on port 8080

The project specifically calls out Syncthing when it runs as a service on port 8080. Open Syncthing’s own settings, find its web interface or service port, and move it off 8080. The Decky documentation names 8384 as Syncthing’s recommended port.

Other software using 8080 or 1337

Look at applications and background services you installed in Desktop Mode, especially anything that provides a local web interface. If one is configured for 8080 or 1337, change it to another unused port using that application’s documented settings, then restart the service and Decky. Decky’s README states: “If you are using any software that uses port 1337 or 8080, please change its port to something else or uninstall it.”

Do not assume that changing a port will repair an individual plugin whose own code is broken. This check addresses a loader-level collision; plugin maintainers may need to diagnose a separate failure.

Use the right release channel

Channel Who it is for When to choose it Risk
Latest Release (stable) Most users First installation and normal recovery after a SteamOS update Lower than prerelease, though compatibility can still change with SteamOS
Latest Pre-Release Primarily plugin developers and testers Only after reinstalling stable fails to recover Decky May be less stable and can introduce new problems

The channel choice is a recovery decision, not a performance upgrade. If prerelease restores the menu, record that fact and watch for a stable release that resolves the original problem. Return to stable when it is able to provide the functionality you need.

When a reinstall does not solve the problem

Confirm the exact scope

Open Quick Access and check whether Decky itself is missing, whether only one plugin is affected, or whether every plugin fails. This distinction determines whether you should stay in the installer or move to plugin-level troubleshooting.

Record versions before changing more settings

  • SteamOS version and update channel
  • Decky Loader version and whether it is stable or prerelease
  • Name and version of the affected plugin
  • The date and change that preceded the failure, such as a SteamOS update, Decky update, or plugin update
  • The exact error text, including whether the plugin is blank, missing, or stuck on a loading indicator
  • Any available logs requested by the Decky or plugin maintainer

Version and channel details matter because identical symptoms can have different causes. A September 2024 issue report described startup failures on SteamOS 3.5.7 Stable, but that is one user report, not evidence that the same cause is widespread or current.

Check the official issue tracker

Search the Decky Loader issue tracker for a report matching your SteamOS version, Decky channel, and symptom. If no matching report exists, file one with the details above and the relevant logs. Keep the report focused on one failure; combining unrelated plugin problems makes diagnosis harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful report opens with the symptom and trigger: for example, “Decky disappeared immediately after updating SteamOS.” Then list the versions, stable or prerelease channel, whether a reinstall was attempted, the result of any port check, and the exact error text. Do not post passwords, account tokens, or unrelated personal files in an issue attachment.

Escalate plugin-specific failures to the plugin maintainer

For a single plugin that remains broken after updating, reloading, and reinstalling it, use that plugin’s current source repository and issue tracker. Verify that the source is the maintainer’s current, trusted location. Avoid random plugin packages, unofficial mirrors, and scripts that ask you to disable security protections.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reinstalling the whole operating system first: A missing Decky menu after an update has a direct reinstall path. Reimaging the Deck adds risk without addressing the documented cause.
  • Switching to prerelease immediately: Stable is the normal channel. Prerelease is a fallback for a failed stable recovery and may be unstable.
  • Deleting all plugin data: It is unnecessary for the initial loader recovery and may remove useful configuration. Uninstall only the plugin you are isolating, and remember that files created outside its plugin directory may remain.
  • Blaming Decky for every plugin error: Plugins have separate maintainers and can fail independently.
  • Ignoring background services: A service occupying port 8080 or 1337 can prevent the loader from working even when the installer itself succeeds.
  • Using an untrusted installer: Reinstall from the official Decky Loader project and use its current channel guidance.
  • Making several changes at once: Updating, uninstalling, and changing ports together hides which step fixed the issue. Work through one change, then retest.

A concise recovery decision tree

  1. Is the Decky menu absent? Go to Desktop Mode and rerun the official installer on stable.
  2. Did stable fail? Try prerelease once, understanding that it is less stable and aimed mainly at plugin developers.
  3. Does Decky open? Use Quick Access → Decky → settings gear to check the loader, update the affected plugin, reload it, and accept a requested Steam restart.
  4. Does only one plugin fail? Uninstall that plugin if updating and reloading do not help, then contact its maintainer through the current source and issue tracker.
  5. Does the loader fail repeatedly? Check software using ports 8080 or 1337, including Syncthing configured on 8080; move the conflicting service, with 8384 recommended for Syncthing.
  6. Still stuck? File or update an issue with SteamOS, Decky channel and version, plugin version, trigger, exact error, and logs.

What to expect after future SteamOS updates

Decky’s README acknowledges that SteamOS updates can make the loader disappear. That behavior does not prove your plugins or saved data are corrupt. After a major update, first check Quick Access; if Decky is absent, use the stable Desktop Mode installer path rather than repeatedly reinstalling individual plugins. If Decky returns but one extension does not, follow the plugin-level path and identify its maintainer.

Once the menu returns, confirm that the loader starts after a normal reboot and that at least one unaffected plugin opens. Keep notes about which channel restored it and whether a port conflict was involved. Those details make a future issue report much more useful if the same symptom returns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official README and installer guidance can change as SteamOS and Decky evolve. Before troubleshooting a new update, consult the current Decky Loader project instructions for the installer and channel names, then use the version-specific details in your issue report if recovery still fails.

Do I need to factory-reset my Steam Deck?

No. The documented recovery is a Decky reinstall, not a SteamOS reimage or factory reset. Start with the installer and preserve your existing data unless a maintainer gives a specific, documented reason to remove something.

Should I install prerelease immediately?

No. Stable is intended for most users. Try prerelease only if reinstalling stable does not restore Decky, and remember that prereleases are aimed mainly at plugin developers and may be unstable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Decky opens but a plugin is missing?

Open Quick Access, choose Decky, and open the settings gear. Check for a loader update, update the plugin, reload it, and accept a requested Steam restart. If it still fails, uninstall that plugin and test the remaining menu.

Will uninstalling a plugin erase all of its data?

It removes the plugin’s own files, but the README warns that files created elsewhere may remain. Uninstalling isolates the extension; it is not a guarantee that every setting or generated file is deleted.

Can Syncthing break Decky?

It can if Syncthing is running as a service on port 8080. Move Syncthing to another port; Decky’s documentation identifies 8384 as the recommended Syncthing port. Restart the service and Decky afterward.

Is a keyboard required for Desktop Mode?

No. A USB-C keyboard and mouse are optional conveniences. Decky’s instructions note that the right trackpad and on-screen keyboard can complete the installation steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Decky disappear after a SteamOS update?

Decky’s official README says the loader can disappear during SteamOS updates. Reinstall it from Desktop Mode using the official installer and choose Latest Release (stable) first.

Do I need to factory-reset my Steam Deck?

No. A factory reset or SteamOS reimage is not the recommended first response. Rerun the Decky installer and preserve your data.

Should I use prerelease instead of stable?

Use stable for normal recovery. Try prerelease only when stable reinstall fails; prereleases are mainly for plugin developers and may be unstable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if only one plugin is broken?

Open Quick Access → Decky → settings gear, update and reload the plugin, then uninstall it if necessary. Contact that plugin’s maintainer if the rest of Decky works.

Does uninstalling a plugin delete all its files?

It removes the plugin’s files, but files created elsewhere may remain, so uninstalling does not guarantee complete data removal.

Can Syncthing interfere with Decky?

Yes, when Syncthing runs on port 8080. Move it to another port; Decky’s documentation recommends 8384 for Syncthing.

Is a physical keyboard required?

No. A keyboard and mouse are optional; the right trackpad and on-screen keyboard can be used in Desktop Mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What details should I include in a bug report?

List SteamOS version and channel, Decky version and channel, plugin name and version, what changed, exact error text, and relevant logs.

The Bottom Line

If the Decky menu is gone, reinstall the official loader in Desktop Mode on the stable channel. If Decky still opens, manage the individual plugin from its settings gear. Use prerelease only as a fallback, check ports 8080 and 1337 when failures recur, and report persistent problems with complete version and log details.
