When a live game buffers or suddenly turns blurry, first determine whether the fault follows the event, the streaming app, the device, or your connection. Test another app on the same device, measure your connection while the game is playing, then try Ethernet or better Wi‑Fi placement, pause competing traffic, lower the player quality, and restart the app, device, and router. If only one service or event fails, check its known-issues page and send support the event time, device, location, speed result, and any error message.
Start with a two-minute diagnosis
Do these checks before changing equipment or contacting your internet provider:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Try another live or on-demand stream on the same device. If every service stutters, your network or device is the more likely starting point. If only one service fails, keep the service or its app in the lead position on your suspect list.
- If possible, open the same service on a second supported device. A game that works on a phone but not on a television points toward the original device, app, browser, or its connection path. This test narrows the possibilities; it does not prove a single cause.
- Run a download-speed test on the device you are actually watching. A test on a nearby phone can be misleading if the TV or console has weaker Wi‑Fi or a different network route.
- Watch what changes when you pause other traffic. Stop large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other video streams. Close apps that are using the same connection.
- Try a lower playback quality. If a manual quality control is available, select a lower resolution for a few minutes. A stable lower-quality picture is useful evidence that available bandwidth or Wi‑Fi reliability is the limiting factor.
Keep notes about the event, the exact time, device, app or browser, network type, speed result, and error text. Those details make later support requests substantially more useful.

Speed-test results are a screening tool, not a guarantee. Different services publish different recommendations, and the figures below come from separate platforms and regions rather than a controlled comparison.
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality

| Service guidance | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| NFL+ (2026 guidance) | 5 Mbps minimum for video; 10 Mbps or higher recommended for HD | Below 5 Mbps, NFL+ says video may buffer or switch to audio-only playback. The HD recommendation is for that service, not every sports platform. |
| TVNZ+ | At least 15 Mbps for a good streaming experience | This is TVNZ+ guidance; the page’s publication date is not stated in the available material. |
| beIN SPORTS CONNECT Singapore | At least 10 Mbps for best HD quality | This recommendation applies to the Singapore service and its best-HD target. |
A result above one service’s recommendation does not rule out every network problem. ESPN identifies distance from the Wi‑Fi router, the number of connected devices, and ISP outages or other network problems as factors that can still degrade playback. Wireless interference, momentary congestion, packet loss, or an overloaded device may not appear in a single headline speed number.
Fix the connection path
Try Ethernet first when it is practical
Connect the television, streaming box, console, or computer directly to the router with a compatible Ethernet cable if both ends have Ethernet ports. TVNZ+ and beIN SPORTS CONNECT list a wired connection as an option when Wi‑Fi is buffering or unreliable. Ethernet removes the local wireless link from the test, so it is one of the clearest ways to separate a Wi‑Fi problem from a wider internet or service problem. It is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed cure: a congested ISP connection or failing service can still buffer over a cable.
Improve Wi‑Fi placement and signal
- Move the streaming device closer to the router for the duration of the game, or move the router to a more open, central position if that is safe and practical.
- Avoid placing the router inside a cabinet or behind dense objects that weaken the signal.
- Repeat the speed test from the viewing position rather than beside the router.
- If several rooms are affected, compare playback in the same room as the router. A large improvement there indicates a coverage or interference issue rather than proof that your broadband plan is too slow.
Reduce competing network use
Pause large downloads and uploads, cloud synchronization, software updates, and other streams while the game is live. Disconnect or pause devices that are consuming substantial bandwidth. NBA notes that bandwidth-heavy activities can reduce video quality, and its player can change quality as the bandwidth available to it changes.

A temporary test on a different trusted connection, such as a phone hotspot where data limits permit, can show whether the home network is involved. Treat this only as a diagnostic comparison; mobile networks can vary sharply by location and congestion, and a hotspot may not sustain a high-quality game for an entire event.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
Control the stream’s quality and adaptive behavior
Lower quality manually
Open the player’s settings or quality menu and choose a lower resolution instead of Auto, if the service exposes that control. Keep the setting low long enough to see whether buffering stops. If it does, raise quality one step at a time until you find the highest stable setting. Restore Auto or your preferred resolution after the network is stable.
Understand adaptive quality
NBA says its video player uses adaptive bandwidth technology to check the internet connection periodically and deliver an optimal quality for that connection. As available bandwidth changes, the player may move between qualities; a visible drop in resolution can therefore be the player protecting playback rather than a broken display. Other services use different algorithms and controls, so do not assume that an NBA setting or behavior exists in another app.
Lowering quality reduces the amount of data needed at each moment, but it cannot fix an app that is crashing, a device that is overheating, or a service outage. Use the result alongside the cross-app and second-device tests.

Refresh the app, browser, and viewing device
- Fully close the stream. Exit the player rather than leaving it running in the background, then reopen the app or browser tab.
- Restart the device. Power-cycle the smart TV, streaming box, console, phone, tablet, or computer and retry the same event.
- Install pending updates. Check the device’s system-update screen and the app store for updates. App and platform compatibility can change, and support pages commonly require current versions.
- Try another supported browser or device. If the service works elsewhere, the original app, browser, or device environment needs attention.
- Clear temporary data when appropriate. On a browser, clear the site’s cache and cookies using that browser’s settings, then sign in again if required. On a mobile or TV platform, use the operating system’s app-storage controls if available.
- Reinstall only after recording your sign-in details. Remove and reinstall the app according to the platform’s instructions. Reinstallation can remove corrupted local files, but it will not repair an ISP outage or a service-side incident.
ESPN and NBA both include combinations of restarting, updating, trying another device or browser, and clearing temporary data in their troubleshooting guidance. Menu names differ by television, console, mobile operating system, and browser, so follow the labels shown on your platform rather than factory-resetting it.

Restart the home network safely
Restarting networking equipment can clear a temporary modem, router, or connection-state problem. Follow the manufacturer’s normal restart procedure, then wait for the internet and Wi‑Fi indicators to return before reopening the stream.
- Close the stream and unplug the modem and router, or use their documented power controls.
- Leave the equipment disconnected for the interval specified by the service or manufacturer. NBA gives one to two minutes as an example; beIN SPORTS CONNECT describes a shorter unplug-and-reconnect procedure.
- Reconnect the equipment, allow it to finish synchronizing, and confirm that another device can reach the internet.
- Retry the game and note whether the result changes on Wi‑Fi and, if available, Ethernet.
These are restart instructions, not a reason to press a factory-reset button. A factory reset erases customized Wi‑Fi names, passwords, and other settings and should be considered only with the equipment manufacturer’s or ISP’s specific instructions.
Identify whether the service or event is having trouble
Signs of a service- or event-specific problem
- Other apps play normally on the same device and connection.
- The same service fails on more than one supported device.
- The problem began exactly when one event started or affects only one channel, league, or program.
- The service’s known-issues page or status communication mentions degraded playback.
Check the service’s own help or known-issues information before repeatedly reinstalling apps. A provider-side incident cannot be repaired from your living room, and repeated local changes can make later diagnosis harder.
Signs of a home-network or ISP problem
- Several streaming apps and devices buffer at the same time.
- Ethernet and Wi‑Fi show similar failures.
- Speed remains below the relevant service guidance even after pausing other traffic.
- Web pages, calls, downloads, or other internet activities also become slow or disconnect.
If speeds remain below a service’s stated minimum, NFL+ advises contacting the ISP. Ask whether an outage, maintenance event, line fault, or local congestion is affecting your connection. Give the ISP the time of the incident and your wired and wireless test results.

Send support a diagnostic report they can use
If the issue continues after the basic sequence, contact the streaming service when the evidence points to that service. NBA asks users to provide the content, event date and time, device or platform, location, description, screenshots, and error messages. Include the following in one message:
- The event name and the exact date and local time when buffering or quality changes occurred.
- The service, app version if visible, and whether you were using a browser, smart TV, console, phone, tablet, or streaming box.
- Your country or region and approximate viewing location, without sharing unnecessary personal information.
- Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, the speed-test result measured on the viewing device, and whether other apps worked.
- What you tried: another device, another app, lower quality, app restart, device restart, router restart, and any change each produced.
- The exact error code or wording, plus a screenshot if the support form accepts images.
Report one reproducible example rather than saying only “it buffers.” For example: “The 20:00 local-time event buffered every few minutes on a television over Wi‑Fi; another service was stable; the same account worked on a phone over the same router; measured speed at the television was 18 Mbps.”

| What you observe | Most useful next action | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Every app buffers on one device | Restart the device, update it, try Ethernet or another device, and check whether the device is under load or overheating. | The device or its local connection is implicated, but the test alone does not identify which one. |
| Every app buffers on several devices | Pause competing traffic, test by Ethernet, restart the router, and contact the ISP if speeds or connectivity remain poor. | The home network or ISP is more likely than one app. |
| Only one app fails everywhere | Check known issues, update or reinstall that app, and contact its support with event and device details. | The service, account, app, or a service-specific compatibility issue is more likely. |
| Only one device fails while another works | Compare the failing device’s Wi‑Fi signal, browser/app version, updates, cache, and supported-platform status. | The problem follows the device or its path, not necessarily the account or event. |
| Lower quality stops buffering | Keep quality lower for the event, reduce other traffic, and investigate Wi‑Fi or available bandwidth before buying equipment. | The stream is sensitive to the bandwidth available at that moment; it does not prove a faster plan is required. |
| Ethernet fixes the problem | Use the cable for important events and improve Wi‑Fi coverage or placement later. | The wireless link was a significant factor, although other network problems could still appear. |
Device-specific checks
Smart TV or streaming box
Restart the television or box, verify that its app is updated, and run the speed test from that device if the platform provides one. If menus are sluggish or the device has little free storage, close unused apps and remove unneeded downloads where the platform allows it. Test Ethernet directly to the router to separate the TV’s Wi‑Fi from the service.
Recommended Free Tools
Game console
Close suspended games and downloads, check for system and app updates, and test the console’s network connection from its settings. Console updates or game downloads can consume bandwidth in the background even when the stream itself is the only visible app.

Phone or tablet
Switch between Wi‑Fi and cellular only as a short diagnostic comparison, taking data limits and coverage into account. Disable large background backups or updates during the event, update the streaming app, and restart the device if playback remains unstable.
Computer browser
Close bandwidth-heavy tabs, pause downloads, update the browser, and try another supported browser. Clear the affected site’s cache and cookies if playback remains broken, then sign in again. Browser extensions can interfere with playback; testing in a clean browser session can help distinguish that from a network fault.
Prepare before the next game
- Run a speed test from the room and device where you will watch, not only beside the router.
- Use Ethernet for a fixed television, console, or computer when a cable run is practical.
- Stop scheduled downloads, backups, and updates before kickoff.
- Install pending device and streaming-app updates earlier in the day.
- Know where the player quality control and the device’s restart option are located.
- Save the service’s support link and record your account or subscription details securely.
Do not buy a new router or faster broadband plan solely because one game buffered. The available guidance supports checking placement, connected-device load, wired versus wireless performance, and service status first. A replacement router or plan becomes a rational next step only when repeated tests show a persistent coverage, equipment, or capacity problem that those checks cannot resolve.
