Most HDMI ARC failures come from the cable being in the wrong HDMI socket, the TV still using its internal speakers, a disabled HDMI-CEC/ARC setting, or an audio-format mismatch. Check the labeled ports and settings first, then rebuild the HDMI link with other devices disconnected before replacing the cable or arranging service.
What HDMI ARC is supposed to do
Audio Return Channel (ARC) sends sound from the TV back to a soundbar through one HDMI cable. The cable must run from the television’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s port marked HDMI OUT, TV (ARC), or eARC. A normal HDMI input on the TV is not the return-audio connection.

ARC also depends on HDMI-CEC, the control system that lets the TV and soundbar detect and control one another. Manufacturers use different names for CEC. Samsung calls it Anynet+; LG calls it SIMPLINK. Your model may use another label or place the control under a different menu. ARC and CEC are related but not identical: the TV needs to route audio to the external device, and the devices need a working control link to establish that route.

It can support higher-bandwidth formats, but both devices, their settings, and sometimes the cable must support the same capabilities. A setup that works with ordinary ARC can still fail when eARC mode or an unsupported output format is selected.

Start with this five-minute check
- Turn on the TV and soundbar.
- Confirm the HDMI cable is fully inserted into the TV’s ARC/eARC socket and the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV ARC/eARC socket.
- Set the TV’s sound output to the connected soundbar or external speaker.
- Select the soundbar input labeled ARC, TV ARC, D.In, or a similar TV-return option.
- Turn HDMI-CEC on in the TV’s settings, then power both devices off and on again.
If sound returns, play several minutes of TV audio and switch between apps or channels. If it cuts out again, continue with the isolation steps rather than assuming the cable is defective.
Step 1: Verify the physical connection and power
Use the labeled ARC ports
Look directly at the labels next to the HDMI sockets. On the TV, use only the port marked ARC or eARC. On the soundbar, use the output socket marked HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC) or TV (ARC/eARC). Do not connect the TV to an HDMI input on the soundbar if that input is not labeled for the TV return path, and do not use an ordinary TV HDMI input for ARC.
ARC requires one HDMI cable; it does not require separate left/right audio cables. If another HDMI cable is connected between the TV and soundbar, remove it while testing so the devices have one clearly defined audio path.

Reseat both ends
Switch both devices off. Remove the HDMI cable from each socket, inspect the connectors for damage or debris, and plug it back in firmly. A connector can look inserted while its contacts are not making a reliable connection. Avoid sharply bending the cable at either plug.
Check that both devices are actually on
A soundbar in standby may not establish ARC until it receives a control signal from the TV. Turn it on with its remote or power button, wait for its display to finish starting, and then turn on the TV. If the soundbar has a separate source indicator, note what it shows before changing any settings.
Step 2: Select the TV’s external audio output
The exact menu path varies by model and software version, but the setting is usually under Sound, Audio, or Sound Output. Choose the HDMI-connected soundbar, HDMI ARC/eARC, or external speaker option instead of TV speakers.

On some Samsung televisions, selecting the soundbar causes the bar to change to D.In and then display TV ARC. Those labels are Samsung examples, not universal names. LG televisions commonly present an HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC option. Other manufacturers may call the same path HDMI audio return or receiver audio.

If the soundbar does not appear as an available output, do not keep changing audio formats yet. First return to the port, CEC, and link-reset checks below; the TV cannot send ARC audio to a device it has not detected.
Step 3: Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC controls
Open the TV’s connection, general, or external-device settings and enable its HDMI-CEC function. Samsung labels this Anynet+; LG labels it SIMPLINK. On some models, ARC or eARC has its own switch under sound settings, while on others it becomes available automatically when CEC is enabled.
Use the television’s manual for the exact path because menus differ by model year, region, and software. Do not assume that enabling CEC on a streaming box or game console enables it on the TV. The TV is the device that must expose the ARC audio route.
After changing CEC or ARC, shut down both devices rather than merely changing inputs. A fresh power-up gives the devices another opportunity to exchange their HDMI capabilities.
Step 4: Re-establish the HDMI link
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable from both ends.
- Disconnect other HDMI equipment from the TV temporarily, including streaming players, consoles, receivers, and set-top boxes.
- Reconnect only the TV and soundbar with the ARC/eARC ports.
- Turn on the soundbar, then the TV, and wait for the soundbar’s source indicator to settle on ARC, TV ARC, or its equivalent.
- Select the soundbar as the TV’s sound output and play built-in TV content.
Testing with only the ARC pair does not prove that a particular external device caused the failure, but it shows whether the basic TV-to-soundbar handshake can remain stable without other HDMI equipment connected. If the connection works in this stripped-down arrangement, reconnect the other devices one at a time and test after each addition.

Step 5: Test with a known-good HDMI cable
If the TV never detects the soundbar, the source refuses to change to TV ARC, or the connection repeatedly drops, substitute a cable that is known to work. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance specifically includes cable replacement as a diagnostic step. It is not a guarantee that the cable is the cause, and ordinary ARC does not require a premium-branded cable based on the available manufacturer guidance.
For eARC, follow the cable and capability requirements stated for your particular TV and soundbar. The relevant question is whether the cable and both devices support the required eARC signaling, not whether the cable is marketed with a luxury label.
Use the replacement cable in the same labeled ARC/eARC sockets. If the new cable changes nothing, keep it connected while you continue testing; changing several variables at once makes the result harder to interpret.
Step 6: Match the audio format and eARC mode
ARC can be established while audio remains silent or unstable if the TV is sending a format the soundbar cannot decode. Open the TV’s digital audio output settings and compare the available choices with the formats listed in the soundbar manual. Samsung identifies audio-format mismatch and eARC configuration as possible causes, but there is no single correct setting for every combination.
When ordinary ARC is being used
Start with a format the soundbar explicitly supports. If an automatic or pass-through mode sends an unsupported signal, try a compatible alternative offered by the TV. Make one change at a time and test the same TV program or app so you can tell whether the change helped.
When eARC is enabled
Verify that the TV and soundbar both support eARC and that eARC mode is set consistently. A soundbar with ARC only cannot use eARC features, and a TV may offer an eARC menu even when the connected bar does not support it. If eARC produces silence or repeated dropouts, use the model’s documented compatibility settings rather than forcing a generic value.

Some televisions expose separate controls for digital output format and eARC mode. Treat them as two different checks: the first determines the audio signal being sent; the second determines which return-channel capability is negotiated.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 7: Determine whether the content or the ARC path is at fault
Play audio from more than one source built into the TV, such as a broadcast channel and a built-in app. If one source works and another is silent, the ARC connection may be healthy while the source uses an unsupported or unusual audio format. Check the source device or app’s audio setting before changing the soundbar.
If every TV source is silent, test the soundbar with another compatible source, such as a device connected directly to an available soundbar input, while following the soundbar manual. This test checks whether the bar can produce sound independently of the TV’s ARC output. It does not by itself identify which TV setting failed, so record the result alongside the cable and port tests.
Step 8: Isolate the failing device
| Test result | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The soundbar works with another source, but not with the original TV. | The soundbar’s speakers and basic amplification work; investigate the original TV’s ARC port, output selection, CEC, audio format, and software. | Repeat the TV-only ARC setup, check the TV manual, and install any available TV update. |
| The problem follows the soundbar to another compatible TV or source. | The soundbar, its ARC socket, firmware, or internal hardware is implicated. | Check the bar’s documented updates and contact its manufacturer for service. |
| A known-good cable fixes the connection. | The original cable or its connectors may be unreliable. | Keep the working cable and route it without strain; no premium cable is established as necessary. |
| Removing other HDMI devices fixes the cutouts. | The complete HDMI system is involved, but the individual cause is not proven. | Reconnect devices one at a time and check their CEC and audio-output settings. |
| No combination establishes ARC, including another cable and compatible test equipment. | A port, firmware, or hardware fault is possible. | Escalate to the TV or soundbar manufacturer, based on which device the fault follows. |
Use a second TV or source only if it is compatible with the soundbar’s connection and audio capabilities. Keep notes of which cable, port, source, and setting produced each result; this prevents repeating the same tests when you contact support.

Format changes
Switching from one program or app to another can change the audio format. If dropouts occur only during particular content, compare the TV’s digital output setting with the soundbar’s supported formats and test a compatible output option.
eARC negotiation
eARC requires compatible hardware and matching configuration. An eARC mode that is unsupported by one side can produce silence or repeated reconnection. Confirm support on both product manuals and use the manufacturer’s documented setting.
Software or firmware problems
Samsung support advises checking TV software and soundbar firmware when eARC trouble persists. Update procedures and menu names vary by model. Install updates only according to the manufacturer’s instructions and retest the ARC pair after both devices restart.

ARC versus optical as a fallback
If ARC remains unreliable, optical audio can provide an alternate connection when both the TV and soundbar have optical ports. LG and Samsung support material lists optical as an alternative, but the connection has its own format and control limitations. Check both manuals before relying on it.
| Connection | What it uses | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC | TV HDMI ARC/eARC port to soundbar HDMI OUT/TV ARC port | Correct ports, TV external-speaker output, CEC/ARC, cable, and supported audio format |
| HDMI eARC | TV eARC port to soundbar eARC port | eARC support on both devices, compatible cable requirements, eARC mode, and supported formats |
| Optical | TV optical output to soundbar optical input | Optical ports on both devices and the formats and control features supported by each manual |
Optical is a fallback, not a repair to the HDMI ARC path. If you need TV-remote volume control, power synchronization, or formats that depend on eARC, verify that the optical connection can provide those features before switching.
When to contact the manufacturer
Request support after you have confirmed the labeled ports, selected the external output, enabled the model’s CEC/ARC controls, reseated or replaced the cable, isolated other HDMI devices, and checked compatible audio settings. Tell support exactly what happened in the cross-tests: whether the soundbar appears as TV ARC, whether the fault affects every TV source, whether another cable changes it, and whether the problem follows the TV or soundbar.
If the fault follows the TV, the TV manufacturer can investigate its ARC port, software, and audio routing. If it follows the soundbar across a known-good cable and another compatible source or TV, the soundbar manufacturer is the appropriate contact. Persistent failure after firmware checks can indicate a port or hardware problem that home settings cannot correct.
Model and regional limitations
Menu names and available features vary by model year and region. Samsung’s Gulf guidance states that its instructions apply to Samsung TVs and soundbars released in 2024 and later, while its eARC guidance is written for Canadian products. LG’s support pages note that menu paths can vary by model or year. Use the instructions above to identify the setting category, then confirm the exact label in your device’s manual.
There is no universal cable grade, audio format, or eARC switch that fixes every setup. The reliable method is to change one variable at a time, test with only the TV and soundbar, and use cross-testing to determine which device the failure follows.
