How to Fix a Sonos Beam (Gen 2) With No Sound or Frequent Disconnects

First identify what is failing: TV sound only, all Beam audio, or the Beam’s connection to the Sonos app. TV-only silence usually points to the TV setup or audio signal path; a Beam that disappears from the app calls for power and network checks. Follow the checks below in order, starting with the ones that do not require buying anything.

Identify which connection is failing

Check whether the Beam appears in the Sonos app and whether it can play music or other non-TV audio. This separates a TV-audio problem from a broader connection problem.

  • Beam is in the app and plays music, but TV audio is silent or drops out: focus first on setup, the TV’s ARC/eARC connection, HDMI cable, TV audio output, and the audio format from the TV or source.
  • Beam is missing from the app: check its power connection, restart it, then investigate Wi-Fi and interference.
  • Several Sonos products are missing or cutting out: look at the network and router rather than treating this as only a Beam-to-TV fault.

Sonos notes that a product can disappear from the app after losing power or network access. Its missing-product guidance covers those checks.

Restore TV audio through HDMI ARC or eARC

Confirm setup and the correct TV port

The Beam (Gen 2) must be set up in the Sonos app before it can play TV audio, and it is not compatible with the S1 Controller app. Connect the Beam’s HDMI cable to the television’s port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC—not an ordinary HDMI input. ARC/eARC carries audio from the TV back to the soundbar. See Sonos’s Beam setup instructions if setup is incomplete.

  • Enrich your entertainment experience with vibrant bass, crystal clear dialogue, and a panoramic soundstage.
  • Experience a 3D surround sound effect with Dolby Atmos.
  • Stream music, radio, podcasts, and audiobooks from all your favorite services when the TV is off.
  • Control with the Sonos app, your TV remote, Apple AirPlay 2, and your voice.
  • Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.

Restart the TV and connected sources

  1. Unplug the TV and any connected audio or video sources, such as a streaming device or game console.
  2. Wait 10 seconds, reconnect them, and test TV audio again.

This restart is one of Sonos’s recommended checks for interrupted TV audio. TV-specific settings and menu names vary, so use the television manufacturer’s instructions for any configuration changes.

Inspect the HDMI cable

Check for kinks or visible damage, then make sure both ends are fully seated in the Beam and the TV’s ARC/eARC port. If another HDMI cable is available, test it. The Beam setup includes an HDMI cable, so consider a replacement only if the supplied cable is damaged or a cable swap resolves the fault—not as a remedy for Wi-Fi dropouts or a CEC conflict. Sonos lists these steps in its TV audio stops or skips guidance.

Update the TV and test Stereo/PCM

Install any available TV software update using the manufacturer’s procedure. Then, as a diagnostic test, change the TV’s digital audio output to Stereo or PCM and see whether interruptions stop. Sonos recommends testing Stereo/PCM to determine whether the issue improves; it is not necessarily the best permanent setting for every setup.

  • Experience a 3D surround sound effect with Dolby Atmos.

  • Control with the Sonos app, your TV remote, Apple AirPlay 2, and your voice.
  • Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.

If Stereo/PCM works but another format does not, check the audio-format settings on both the TV and the source device. The formats available depend on those devices and their connection. Sonos’s supported home theater audio formats page describes what the Beam supports.

Check whether the TV itself is cutting out

Disconnect the Beam and listen through the TV’s built-in speakers. If those speakers also lose sound, investigate the TV or connected source independently; the Beam is not the only part of the audio path that can cause interruptions.

Understand HDMI ARC, eARC, and optical limits

HDMI ARC/eARC is the normal connection for Beam TV audio and is required for HDMI-CEC and supported TV-control voice functions. Beam (Gen 2) supports Dolby Atmos through Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD, but Atmos requires HDMI ARC/eARC. Sonos indicates that eARC is needed for some higher-bandwidth formats, including Dolby TrueHD and multichannel PCM; the actual output also depends on the TV and source.

Sonos Beam G2 Soundbar + Sub Mini Subwoofer - Black
  • Take your TV, music, and gaming to the next level with this compact smart soundbar and subwoofer.
  • This set is ideal for smaller or medium-sized rooms and low to moderate volume levels.
  • Use the Sonos app to easily set up your home theater system and sync with your existing TV remote.
  • Sub Mini balances out the lowest frequencies so Beam sounds even better.
  • When the TV is off, stream music and more over WiFi from hundreds of services using the Sonos app, your voice, and Apple AirPlay 2.

If the TV has no HDMI ARC port, Sonos says the included optical adapter can connect the Beam to a digital optical output. Optical is a fallback, not an equivalent feature set: CEC and TV voice control do not work over optical. Sonos’s TV connection requirements explain the available connection paths.

Resolve an HDMI or CEC error

If the Sonos app reports an HDMI/CEC error, another device attached to the TV may be interfering with HDMI control.

  1. Check that CEC is enabled on the TV. Manufacturers may use different names for this setting; consult the TV manual.
  2. Disconnect other HDMI devices from the TV and check whether the error clears.
  3. Reconnect those devices one at a time, checking after each one to identify whether a particular device brings the error back.
  4. If one device triggers the error, disable its CEC feature if possible.

These isolation steps follow Sonos’s HDMI connection error guidance.

Fix a Beam that disappears from the Sonos app or drops off Wi-Fi

Check power first

Confirm the Beam’s power cable is connected securely and that the product is receiving power. Restart the Beam, then check whether it reappears in the app. A missing product can reflect lost power as well as lost network connectivity, so do not assume that every disappearance is a Wi-Fi fault.

Improve Wi-Fi signal and reduce interference

Where available, review the Beam’s connection details and signal strength in the Sonos app. Try moving the Beam or router to improve coverage. Sonos recommends placing the router centrally and in the open, and reducing nearby sources of wireless interference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sonos identifies routers, extenders, wireless cameras, cordless phones, hubs, and microwaves as possible interference sources. When interference is suspected, Sonos recommends keeping Sonos products at least 18 inches (0.5 m) from other electronic devices. This is placement guidance, not a guarantee that a particular dropout will stop. Walls and surfaces also affect wireless signals; Sonos rates metal as having very high interference potential and concrete or plaster as high. See its wireless interference guidance and Wi-Fi connection advice.

Consider Ethernet only as a deliberate wired setup

A wired connection to the router may suit an environment where Wi-Fi remains unreliable, but it is not a fix for silent TV audio. Follow Sonos’s instructions for changing the system between wireless and wired configurations rather than simply switching settings at random. Sonos notes that Wi-Fi can only be disabled when a product is connected by Ethernet; if Ethernet is then disconnected, the product may disappear from the app. Review Sonos’s wireless and wired setup instructions and its Wi-Fi on/off requirements before changing the setup.

When to contact Sonos

If the Beam remains silent or keeps disappearing after the relevant setup, cable, TV, power, and network checks, contact Sonos through the Beam support hub. Sonos says its technicians can help by phone or live chat.
