Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMost smartwatch connection failures are fixed by checking compatibility, using the watch maker’s companion app, restoring the required permissions and network access, then restarting, updating and pairing again. Bluetooth being enabled is not enough: a watch can appear in the phone’s Bluetooth list while setup in the companion app remains incomplete. Work through the steps below in order, and postpone a factory reset until everything else has failed.
First identify whether the problem is discovery, app setup, or an existing connection that keeps dropping. That distinction prevents you from deleting a working pairing when the real issue is an unsupported phone, a missing permission, or an outdated plug-in.

First, identify what “won’t connect” means
The right fix depends on where the process stops. A watch that never appears needs a different approach from one that appears in Bluetooth but cannot finish setup.
| What you see | What it usually indicates | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The watch is not discovered at all | Compatibility, power, distance, Bluetooth, airplane mode or required permissions may be blocking discovery. | Confirm the phone operating system and model support, charge both devices, bring them close, and check Bluetooth, airplane mode and permissions. |
| The phone lists the watch under Bluetooth, but the watch app does not | The watch may have been paired at the system level without completing the manufacturer’s setup flow. | Remove the Bluetooth pairing as the manufacturer directs, then start pairing inside the companion app. |
| Pairing starts but stops or reports an error | An outdated app or device, missing permission, unavailable network or stale pairing can interrupt setup. | Restart both devices, update all required software, restore permissions and retry in the companion app. |
| The watch connected before but keeps disconnecting | Airplane mode, Bluetooth or nearby-device permissions, range, software problems or an incomplete re-pair may be involved. | Check the connection conditions, restart both devices and repeat the supported pairing process. |
Also note whether this is a first-time setup, a phone replacement, or a watch that was already linked to another phone. A watch can remain associated with an old phone or account, so a new phone may require the maker’s transfer or unpair process rather than a second Bluetooth connection.

Check compatibility before changing settings
Compatibility is the first gate. A phone’s Bluetooth support does not prove that the watch maker supports that particular phone, operating-system version or watch generation.
Confirm the exact watch model
Read the model name in the watch’s settings, on its case or packaging, or in the maker’s account page. Do not rely on a family name alone: requirements can differ between generations and between Bluetooth, LTE and regional editions. If the watch was purchased used, verify the precise model before following instructions for a newer or older generation.
Confirm the phone operating system and version
Check the phone’s About section for its operating system and version, then compare that information with the watch maker’s current requirements for your exact model. Samsung publishes different minimum Android versions for different Galaxy Watch generations and identifies some models that do not support iPhone. Google states that Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 connect only to Android phones. If the combination is outside the maker’s supported list, troubleshooting cannot make it compatible.

Compatibility can also change after a phone operating-system update or when a watch model reaches the end of its supported platform list. Check the maker’s current support page rather than relying on an old setup guide or an app-store description for a different generation.
Install the correct companion app
Use the official app named for the watch, not a similarly named utility or a generic Bluetooth manager. Some watches also need a device plug-in or a Google Play services component. Install the app from the phone’s normal app store, sign in if the setup flow requires an account, and check for an update before pairing.
- Watch model and generation match the app’s supported-device list.
- Phone operating system meets the maker’s stated minimum.
- The app is available for your phone platform and region.
- Any required plug-in or Google Play services component is installed.
- If the watch was used with another phone, you know which account and transfer or unpair procedure the maker requires.
Prepare both devices for setup
Charge the watch
Put the watch on its charger or make sure it has enough battery to complete setup. A shutdown during pairing can leave an incomplete record that must be removed before you can try again. Google’s Pixel Watch setup guidance includes charging as an initial check. Keep the watch charging if the setup is downloading firmware or installing a lengthy update.
Keep the watch and phone close
Place the devices next to each other while pairing. Proximity is particularly important for Fast Pair-style discovery and prevents a weak short-range signal from being mistaken for an app or account problem. Avoid starting setup in another room, inside a bag, or near equipment that could make it difficult to see the pairing prompt.

Turn on Bluetooth and turn off airplane mode
On both devices, open the connection controls and make sure Bluetooth is on. Turn airplane mode off; it can disable or restrict the radios and network services that setup needs. After changing either setting, close and reopen the companion app. If Bluetooth was just toggled, wait for the phone to finish scanning before selecting the watch.
Provide the network access setup requires
Many watches need Wi-Fi or mobile internet during initial setup to download software, verify an account or complete activation. Connect the phone to a reliable Wi-Fi network or confirm that mobile data is available. If the watch model has its own LTE activation step, follow the carrier and manufacturer requirements shown in the app. A Bluetooth link by itself may not complete account verification or firmware delivery.
Allow nearby-device, location and app permissions
Open the phone’s app-permission page for the companion app and allow the permissions it requests for setup. Depending on the platform and watch, this can include nearby-device access, Bluetooth access, location and network access. Google’s Pixel Watch instructions specifically call out location, network access and nearby-device permission. Samsung notes that permissions for the companion app and Google Play services can affect connection.
Permission labels vary by phone version. If a permission was previously denied, change it in Settings, force-close the companion app, reopen it and retry. Do not grant unrelated permissions that the app does not request. If the app uses a separate device plug-in or Google Play services, check that component’s permissions too; allowing access only for the main app may not be sufficient.

Restart and update before pairing again
- Restart the phone. Use the phone’s normal power menu, wait until it has fully started, and unlock it.
- Restart the watch. Use the watch’s power menu or the model-specific button combination. If it is frozen, use the maker’s documented forced-restart method rather than repeatedly trying to pair.
- Update the phone. Install any pending operating-system update that your phone supports, then restart if prompted.
- Update the watch and companion app. In the manufacturer’s app, check for watch firmware and app updates. Install any required device plug-in update as well. Google’s Pixel Watch guidance calls for updated devices, and Samsung directs users to keep its Wearable app current.
- Retry from a clean app session. Open the companion app after both devices restart, leave it in the foreground during setup and follow its on-screen instructions.
Updating matters because the phone app, watch firmware and plug-in must be able to communicate with one another. If the app is still showing an old pairing after an update, continue to the stale-pairing steps instead of repeatedly tapping Connect. A restart after an update can also clear a temporary discovery state without changing your watch data.
Pair through the manufacturer’s companion app
Start setup in the watch maker’s app, not in the phone’s general Bluetooth settings. The app can install the correct services, verify the watch model, transfer an account and apply model-specific permissions.
- Open the companion app and choose its option to add, set up or connect a device.
- Select the exact watch model shown by the app.
- Keep the watch unlocked and nearby while the app searches.
- When a pairing code appears on both screens, confirm that the codes match before accepting.
- Approve requested permissions, software installation and account steps.
- Leave the app open until it reports that setup is complete; do not switch to Bluetooth settings midway.
Garmin specifically warns that pairing directly through the phone’s Bluetooth menu rather than Garmin Connect is not recommended. A Bluetooth entry can therefore be present even though the watch has not been properly added to the account or app. The same principle applies to other brands: the operating system’s Bluetooth list is a transport connection, while the companion app performs model setup, account linking and required services.

Remove a stale or incomplete pairing
If the watch is listed in Bluetooth but the companion app cannot find it, remove the old record and start over. Exact menu names differ by phone, watch model and software version.

Apple advises unpairing and pairing an Apple Watch again when its initial connection checks do not restore the link. Other makers use different labels and may require removal in the app before removal in Bluetooth, so follow the sequence given for your model. If the watch is still shown as managed by another phone or account, complete that account’s transfer or unpair step before attempting a new setup.
Brand and platform notes
Samsung watches
Galaxy Watch requirements vary by generation. Check the support page for the precise model and phone operating system, especially if you use an iPhone. In addition to Bluetooth, review permissions for the Samsung companion app and Google Play services, keep the Wearable app current, restart both devices and retry setup from the app. A Galaxy Watch that appears in Bluetooth but not in Galaxy Wearable should be removed and added through Wearable rather than connected again from the phone settings.
Google Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2
Google says these watches connect only to Android phones. During setup, charge the watch, install current updates, keep it close for discovery, enable Bluetooth, provide location and nearby-device access, and ensure the phone has Wi-Fi or mobile internet. If a reset becomes necessary, Google warns that it erases apps, settings and data from the watch. Complete the supported re-pair process before resetting, and be prepared to sign in and install updates again afterward.
Apple Watch
Keep the Apple Watch and iPhone close, turn off airplane mode, and confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled. Restart both devices before trying again. If the watch remains unconnected, Apple’s supported path is to unpair and pair it again; use the Apple Watch and iPhone instructions for your software versions so that any available backup is handled correctly. Do not assume an Apple Watch can be fully configured from the iPhone’s Bluetooth screen alone.
Garmin watches
Use Garmin Connect for discovery and setup rather than the phone’s Bluetooth page. Garmin’s troubleshooting guidance covers restarting the phone and watch, checking connection and compatibility problems, removing an old pairing and retrying when a device or accessory is not found. If Garmin Connect cannot find a watch that the phone lists, remove the Bluetooth record and begin again in Garmin Connect.
Factory-reset only after the supported re-pair fails
A factory reset is a last resort, not a faster version of forgetting Bluetooth. It can erase watch data, apps, settings and downloaded content, and the exact process varies by model.

Before resetting
- Confirm that the phone and watch combination is supported.
- Complete the restart, update, permission and stale-pairing steps first.
- Check whether the companion app has synchronized health, activity or other data to your account.
- Record any settings or credentials you will need during setup.
- Read the reset instructions for the exact model and software version.
- Check whether the maker requires the watch to be charged or connected to a particular account before reset.
After resetting
Let the watch reboot fully, keep it on the charger if the maker recommends that, and start setup in the companion app. You may need to sign in again, approve permissions, install updates and complete an account or LTE activation flow. Google explicitly states that resetting a Pixel Watch erases apps, settings and data, so do not use that step without accepting the loss. A reset also does not fix an unsupported phone combination; verify compatibility first.

If the watch fails with the correct app on a compatible phone after the documented reset, avoid repeatedly deleting and recreating pairings; preserve the error details and follow the model-specific service process.
Do not assume a generic Bluetooth adapter, replacement charger or unrelated accessory will solve the problem. The failure may involve model compatibility, account activation, firmware or hardware, and only the manufacturer or an authorized service channel can determine which applies.
Keep a successful connection stable
- Keep the watch, phone and companion app updated.
- Leave the companion app’s required permissions enabled, including nearby-device or location access when the platform requires them.
- Avoid pairing the watch to a second phone without first using the maker’s transfer or unpair process.
- When reconnecting after a phone replacement or reset, use the companion app rather than creating a Bluetooth-only pairing.
- If a connection drops, check airplane mode, Bluetooth, network availability and proximity before deleting the pairing.
- Open the companion app after a major phone or watch update to confirm that the device still appears as managed and connected.
- If you must change phones, complete the maker’s supported migration or unpair procedure before setting up the watch on the new device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my smartwatch show as paired in Bluetooth but not in the watch app?
The phone may have a Bluetooth-only pairing that did not complete the manufacturer’s setup. Forget or remove the watch as the maker directs, restart both devices, and add it from the official companion app instead of reconnecting from Bluetooth settings.
Can any phone with Bluetooth connect to a smartwatch?
No. Compatibility depends on the exact watch generation, phone operating system and version, app availability and sometimes region or edition. For example, Google says Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 connect only to Android phones, while Samsung lists different requirements by Galaxy Watch generation.

Depending on the model and phone, setup can require Bluetooth or nearby-device access, location, network access and permissions for the companion app or Google Play services. Review the permissions requested by the official app, then reopen it after changing a previously denied permission.
Best Value
Should I pair the watch from my phone’s Bluetooth menu?
Usually no. Start in the watch maker’s companion app. Garmin specifically cautions that pairing directly through Bluetooth rather than Garmin Connect is not recommended, and a Bluetooth entry does not prove that account setup is complete.
What should I do if the watch was connected to another phone?
Use the maker’s transfer or unpair process on the old phone or watch if available. Remove the stale app and Bluetooth records, restart both devices, and complete a new setup through the companion app. A second Bluetooth pairing can leave the watch associated with the old setup.
Will a factory reset fix a watch that will not connect?
Only sometimes, and it should be a last step. A reset can erase apps, settings and data; Google explicitly warns of that loss for Pixel Watch. Confirm compatibility, update, restore permissions and remove stale pairings first, then follow the exact reset instructions for your model.
Why does my watch keep disconnecting after it worked?
Check that Bluetooth is on, airplane mode is off, required nearby-device permissions remain enabled, the devices are close, and the phone has the network access the app needs. Restart both devices and update the watch, phone and companion app before repeating the supported pairing flow.
When should I contact the manufacturer?
Escalate when a compatible phone and the correct app still cannot discover the watch, setup repeatedly fails after the maker’s supported reset, or the connection drops immediately after a correct app-based pairing. Give support the model, phone and software versions, error text and steps already attempted.
The Bottom Line
Check model compatibility first, then charge and bring the devices together, enable Bluetooth, disable airplane mode, restore the companion app’s required permissions and network access, restart and update everything, and pair only through the manufacturer’s app. Remove stale pairings before considering a reset, because a factory reset can erase data and cannot make an unsupported phone compatible.
