If your smart TV won’t connect to Wi-Fi, first check whether another device can use the same network. If it cannot, troubleshoot the router, modem, or internet service; if it can, check the TV’s chosen network, password, signal, and connection status. Work through the checks below in order before changing router settings or buying equipment.
1. Check whether the problem is the TV or the internet connection
- On a phone or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi, open a website. If it also cannot get online, the issue is more likely with the modem, router, or internet service than with the TV. Check with your internet provider for an outage and restart network equipment according to its maker’s instructions. LG’s guidance is to unplug the modem and router, wait about 10 seconds, then reconnect them; follow your equipment’s own directions if its setup differs. - If other devices can reach the internet, continue with the TV. Make sure it is trying to join the intended Wi-Fi network, then enter the password again carefully. Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive. If the problem began after a router settings change, review that change rather than altering unrelated security settings.
2. If the TV cannot find your Wi-Fi network
Rescan for available networks from the TV’s network settings. If your network is missing, the TV may be out of range, the network may be hidden, or the router’s settings may not be compatible with the TV. Try moving the TV or router closer and check the TV maker’s model-specific guidance.

- On supported models, you may be able to enter a missing network name (SSID) manually. Sony describes this option in its network troubleshooting guide.
- If the router is configured to hide its network name, temporarily make the network visible while troubleshooting, then follow your router maker’s guidance on restoring your preferred setting. Samsung also recommends checking network compatibility and router settings in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.
- If the Wi-Fi menu is disabled or the TV shows no wireless networks at all, contact the TV maker. An empty list or unavailable Wi-Fi settings can require model-specific diagnosis; changing router settings may not resolve a TV-side problem.
3. If the TV sees Wi-Fi but will not join
Select the correct network and re-enter its password, checking uppercase and lowercase letters. If possible, confirm the password by connecting another device to that same network. A network appearing in the TV’s list only means the TV can detect it; it does not mean the TV has joined successfully or can reach the internet.

4. If the TV says it is connected but apps have no internet
A TV can establish a local wireless link to the router and still fail to reach the internet. Test a phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi. If that device also cannot load a website, check for an internet-service outage and restart the network equipment as described above. If other devices work, inspect the TV’s network status and confirm it is connected to the intended network.
Roku’s connection diagnostic guidance distinguishes a failure to connect to a network from a failure to reach the internet. That distinction helps identify whether to focus on Wi-Fi joining or the internet connection beyond the router.

5. If Wi-Fi is weak or keeps dropping
A TV may detect a Wi-Fi network even when the signal is too weak to maintain a stable connection. Move the router closer to the TV, improve the line of sight where practical, and test again before adding range equipment. Walls and other obstructions can reduce the signal.

A Wi-Fi extender or repeater may help when distance is the diagnosed problem, but it is not guaranteed to improve the experience: LG cautions that an extender may make a connection slower or unstable, depending on the environment. Wired Ethernet may be a more reliable alternative if your TV supports it.

6. Try Ethernet if your TV supports it
- Check the TV’s specifications or ports for a LAN/Ethernet connection. Compatibility varies by model; some Roku players, for example, require a supported USB Ethernet adapter.
- Connect the TV to the router with an Ethernet cable.
- Open the TV’s network settings and select the wired connection option, following the model’s instructions. Roku explains wired setup for supported devices in its internet connection guide; LG also recommends wired networking for reliability.
- Test the connection and an app that previously failed. If Ethernet works, that narrows the problem to Wi-Fi coverage or wireless settings, but it does not by itself identify which component is at fault.
7. When to contact the TV maker or internet provider
- Contact your internet provider if multiple devices on the same Wi-Fi cannot access the internet.
- Contact the TV maker if the TV lists no wireless networks, Wi-Fi settings are unavailable, or TV-side connection tests continue to fail. Samsung says repeated MAC-address failure after its suggested reset warrants service; follow its model-specific instructions rather than assuming one reset sequence applies to every TV.
- Have the TV model, the result of the other-device test, and any network-status message ready. Those details help support distinguish a TV issue from a router or service problem.
A factory reset is not a universal remedy for Wi-Fi trouble and cannot be assumed to repair a hardware fault. Reset steps differ by model, so use the manufacturer’s instructions if support recommends one.
