Start with the kettle’s power and the exact app for its model. Then check whether the kettle requires 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, move your phone and kettle close to the router, enable Bluetooth when pairing calls for it, and restart the phone, router and kettle. If it remains offline, use the model’s documented reset and re-pairing process. A kettle already linked to another account may require the original owner to invite you. Stop and contact the manufacturer if those model-specific steps fail.

| What you see | Most likely area to check | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| The kettle has no lights and will not heat locally | Power, base or appliance operation | Check the outlet, powered base and water level before troubleshooting Wi‑Fi. |
| The app cannot find the kettle during setup | Wrong app, pairing mode, Bluetooth, phone distance or network band | Confirm the model’s app, enable requested phone permissions and retry beside the router. |
| The kettle connected before but now says offline | Router, signal, changed credentials or a stalled app session | Check internet and range, then restart the router, kettle and app. |
| The kettle works in its own app but not in a voice assistant | Account or smart-home linking | Check the relevant skill, linked account and household permissions. |
| Another person cannot add an already-configured kettle | Account ownership | Ask the account that first registered the kettle to use its sharing or invitation process. |
1. Confirm power and basic kettle operation
Check the outlet and base
Make sure the power cord is fully inserted and the outlet works with another appliance. If the kettle uses a removable base, place it squarely on the base and verify that the base itself is receiving power. Xiaomi’s Mi Smart Kettle Pro guidance specifically calls for checking that the kettle is on its base and that the base has power. Swan’s initial checks also include power and water level.
Fill the kettle above its minimum mark and below its maximum mark before testing a heating command. A low water level, an incorrectly seated kettle or an unpowered base can look like an app failure because the appliance cannot carry out the command even when the phone is connected.

Separate a connection fault from an appliance fault
Try the kettle’s local controls without the app. If it will not power on or heat locally, do not keep changing router settings or repeatedly resetting the appliance. The connection pages for these products do not establish a universal electrical repair procedure; use the model’s manual or manufacturer support for a power or heating fault.
2. Use the app intended for the exact model
Smart-kettle product families may use different apps, even when the hardware looks similar. Read the model number from the label, base or manual and match it to the manufacturer’s setup instructions.
| Product or family | App or setup distinction documented by the maker |
|---|---|
| Mi Smart Kettle Pro | The manufacturer’s FAQ directs owners to Mi Home and includes checks for Bluetooth, power cycling and rebinding. |
| iKettle 3rd generation | Smarter’s setup guidance covers its own account and pairing flow and recommends setup near the router. |
| Swan Alexa Smart Kettle | The kettle’s app connection and Alexa linking are separate checks; the maker advises verifying both. |
| Fellow EKG Pro and Pro Studio | Fellow says these models should be paired through the EKG Updater app rather than the general Fellow App. |
Install the current version of the correct app from the official app store. If the manufacturer’s troubleshooting page recommends it, uninstall and reinstall the app; Fellow lists reinstalling as a step after earlier connection checks fail. Do not assume that an app used by another kettle in the same brand family supports your model.

If setup stops after you enter the Wi‑Fi details, the kettle may already belong to another account. Smarter says an iKettle 3rd generation that is connected to one account does not necessarily need to be set up again for a second user; the original user may need to invite the new user. This is an account-ownership issue, not a weak-signal problem.
3. Match the kettle’s Wi‑Fi requirements
Check for a 2.4 GHz requirement
Several makers specify 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi for setup. Smarter’s iKettle 3rd generation instructions require a 2.4 GHz signal, and Swan recommends stable 2.4 GHz service and sufficient router range for its Alexa kettle. That does not make 2.4 GHz a universal rule for every smart kettle, so use the exact model documentation as the authority.

Many modern routers broadcast 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name and automatically steer devices between them. If your kettle requires 2.4 GHz, follow your router’s instructions to select or temporarily separate the 2.4 GHz network, and keep the phone on that same band while the app is provisioning the kettle. Fellow notes that band-steering behavior can interfere with its connection flow and may require choosing the specific 2.4 GHz option shown by the app.
Set up beside the router
Move the kettle, its base and your phone close to the router for initial pairing. Smarter explicitly advises doing iKettle setup as close to the router as possible. A strong signal at the setup location removes distance as a variable; you can move the kettle back to its normal position after it has joined successfully.

If the kettle works beside the router but drops offline in its usual location, coverage is the likely difference. A Wi‑Fi range extender can help only when the kettle is outside reliable coverage. It will not correct an incompatible app, an account lock, disabled wireless hardware or a defective kettle. Do not buy networking equipment until you have reproduced the problem at close range.
Avoid unsupported networks and unsafe router changes
Guest and public networks may block the local discovery or device-to-device traffic that setup requires. Use a normal private home network unless the manufacturer says otherwise. Router security modes, password rules and band requirements vary by model. Do not weaken encryption, remove a password or change advanced security settings merely because a generic troubleshooting article suggests it; make such changes only when the exact manufacturer instructions call for them, and restore a secure configuration afterward.
4. Prepare the phone for pairing
Keep Bluetooth and the phone nearby
Some kettles use Bluetooth to discover or provision the appliance before handing it off to Wi‑Fi. Xiaomi identifies Bluetooth distance as a reason the phone must stay near the Mi Smart Kettle Pro. Fellow likewise recommends enabling Bluetooth and remaining close during reconnection.

- Place the phone within a short distance of the kettle and leave it there through the entire pairing flow.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on once if discovery is stuck, then reopen the kettle app.
- Grant only the nearby-device, Bluetooth or location permissions that the app requests for discovery. Permission names differ by phone operating system.
- Turn off battery-saver restrictions for the app temporarily if your phone suspends it during setup.
A separate Xiaomi FAQ for a 5 L hot-water dispenser mentions Bluetooth and positioning requirements. That example shows that permissions can be product-specific; it is not evidence that every kettle needs the same settings.

5. Restart everything in a controlled order
Restarting clears a stale app session, a temporary Bluetooth state and a router lease without changing the kettle’s stored configuration. Follow this sequence rather than repeatedly tapping the connect button.
- Close the kettle app completely. Reopen it only after the other devices have restarted.
- Restart the phone. When it comes back, confirm Bluetooth is enabled and reconnect to the intended 2.4 GHz network if the model requires it.
- Restart the router according to its instructions. Wait until another device can browse the internet before testing the kettle.
- Switch the kettle off, remove it from the powered base if the manual permits, wait briefly, then place it back and power it on. Do not operate an empty kettle; observe the water-level limits in its manual.
- With the phone and kettle beside the router, open the correct app and retry the documented pairing flow.
Swan recommends restarting both kettle and router for connection problems. Xiaomi’s Mi Smart Kettle Pro guidance includes restarting phone Bluetooth, powering the kettle off and on, and rebinding when necessary.
6. Reset and pair again using model-specific instructions
If a restart does not restore the connection, put the kettle into its documented Wi‑Fi or pairing mode and reconnect it in the correct app. Reset controls and button-hold times differ between products. The available manufacturer guidance does not support one universal reset combination, so do not guess a sequence from another kettle.
What a model-specific reset should accomplish
- Clear the old wireless credentials or place the kettle in a discoverable pairing state.
- Leave the kettle ready for the app to send the new network details.
- Remove an obsolete connection without changing unrelated account settings, if the maker distinguishes those functions.
Follow the exact visual or audio confirmation described in the manual. If the kettle never indicates pairing mode, stop rather than repeating random button combinations; contact the maker with the model number.

Fellow EKG Pro and Pro Studio
Use the EKG Updater app for these models, ensure Wireless is turned on, enable Bluetooth and stay close during reconnection. Fellow’s support guidance states that the Updater app requires Wireless to be enabled and provides model-specific router and reset directions.
7. Fix an app that says the kettle is offline
An offline status does not prove that the kettle has failed. First determine whether the home network changed since the last successful connection.
- Check that another device can reach the internet through the same home network.
- Look at the kettle’s current location, not just the router’s location; walls and appliances can reduce coverage.
- Consider whether the Wi‑Fi name or password changed, the router was replaced, or the 2.4 GHz network was disabled.
- Power-cycle the kettle and router, then reopen the app after the router is fully online.
- If the kettle remains offline, use the model’s documented reset and rebind process rather than repeatedly entering old credentials.
If the kettle connects only when it is beside the router, treat that as a range problem. Improve placement or coverage after confirming that the kettle’s required band is available at its normal position.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. When the app cannot find the kettle at all
Discovery failures usually occur before Wi‑Fi credentials are accepted. Work through these checks in order:
- Verify that the app matches the exact model and that the kettle is powered and in its documented pairing mode.
- Keep the phone within Bluetooth range and turn Bluetooth off and back on.
- Grant the requested nearby-device or location permission, then force-close and reopen the app.
- Move both devices beside the router and select the required 2.4 GHz network if the manual specifies it.
- Make sure another phone is not simultaneously attempting to claim the kettle.
- Reset and re-pair only with the manufacturer’s instructions.
If the kettle appears in Bluetooth settings but not in the maker’s app, do not pair it manually from the phone’s Bluetooth menu unless the manual specifically instructs you to. Many appliances expect the app to perform the handoff and may remain unusable when paired through the operating system alone.

9. Resolve account and voice-assistant linking
Another household member cannot add the kettle
Check which account first registered the appliance. For the iKettle 3rd generation, Smarter says the original account holder may need to invite another user instead of having that person perform a fresh setup. Use the maker’s sharing or invitation feature when available.
The kettle works in its own app but not with Alexa
Treat this as a smart-home integration problem. In the Alexa app, verify that the kettle maker’s skill is enabled, the same account is linked, and device discovery has completed. Swan lists checking the Alexa link separately from checking the kettle’s Wi‑Fi connection. If the kettle is offline in its own app, fix that connection before troubleshooting the voice assistant.
10. Common mistakes that waste time
- Using a familiar but incorrect app: product families can split across different apps, as with Fellow’s Pro models and its general app.
- Trying to pair from the far end of the house: setup is easier when the kettle is beside the router.
- Assuming every kettle supports 5 GHz: some documented models require 2.4 GHz.
- Changing router security blindly: unsupported changes can create a security risk and still leave the kettle unpaired.
- Repeating a guessed factory reset: reset controls are model-specific and may erase useful settings.
- Buying an extender first: an extender addresses coverage, not account binding, app compatibility or a disabled wireless setting.
- Ignoring local operation: a kettle that cannot heat on its base has an appliance or power issue in addition to any app symptom.
11. When to contact the manufacturer
Escalate when the exact app is installed, the kettle powers and operates locally, the phone and kettle are close to the router, the required network band is available, Bluetooth and requested permissions are enabled, restarts are complete, and the documented reset or re-pair process still fails.

Swan explicitly advises contacting customer support for persistent connection problems. Support can provide the correct reset sequence, check account ownership and determine whether the device needs service. The available guidance does not establish universal warranty terms, repair prices or replacement eligibility, so confirm those directly with the manufacturer.
Model-specific reference points
| Model or family | Connection details to remember |
|---|---|
| Mi Smart Kettle Pro | Stay close for Bluetooth discovery; verify the powered base, app version and phone Bluetooth; power-cycle and rebind when instructed. |
| iKettle 3rd generation | Set up near the router on 2.4 GHz; an appliance already linked to another account may require an invitation from the original user. |
| Swan Alexa Smart Kettle | Use stable 2.4 GHz coverage, check power and water level, verify the app and Alexa link, then restart or reset and reconnect. |
| Fellow EKG Pro and Pro Studio | Use EKG Updater, keep Wireless enabled, use Bluetooth and proximity, and follow Fellow’s router and reset directions. |
A practical stopping point
Do not keep changing settings once you have proved that the kettle works locally, the correct app is being used, the required network is available beside the router, and the model-specific reset has failed. At that point the remaining causes—account ownership, firmware behavior or hardware—require the manufacturer’s records or service tools. Supplying the diagnostic details above lets support skip the generic checks and move directly to the model’s documented remedy.
