| What you see | Most likely scope | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The display and other household devices are offline | Modem, router, ISP service, or a broad Wi‑Fi outage | Connect a phone or laptop to the same network and open a webpage; restart the modem/router if it also fails. |
| Only the display is offline | Saved password, radio, signal, interference, or display software | Power-cycle the display, re-enter the current Wi‑Fi password, and test it close to the router. |
| The phone app cannot discover the display during setup | Wrong app, phone permissions, different networks, guest isolation, client isolation, or blocked mDNS | Put the phone and display on the same main network and check local-discovery settings. |
| The display is online but one light, plug, or thermostat will not respond | The controlled device, its hub/account, a platform skill, or a protocol pairing | Try the device manufacturer’s app first, then repair the platform integration. |
| The display cannot join any known-good network | Display hardware, firmware, or a persistent configuration fault | Reset only after the network checks, then contact the display manufacturer if it still fails. |
1. Prove whether the home network is working
Test a second device
- Connect a phone or laptop to the exact Wi‑Fi name used by the display.
- Open a normal webpage or another internet service.
- Try a second device if the first one is inconclusive.
If several devices cannot reach the internet, the display is probably not the root cause. Restart the modem and router, and check your internet provider’s outage information. Do not spend time deleting the display from the app while the wider network is down. Google’s troubleshooting guidance uses this other-device test to distinguish a display fault from a modem, router, or ISP problem.
If phones and computers work normally but the display does not, continue with the display-specific checks below. A working internet connection does not prove that local device discovery is allowed; a router can provide internet while blocking communication between devices.

2. Restart the display and network in the right order
Power-cycle both devices
- Unplug the smart display from power.
- Leave it disconnected for about 30 seconds to one minute. Lenovo’s Smart Display 7 instructions specify one minute.
- Restart the modem/router using its normal power procedure and wait until its Wi‑Fi and internet indicators settle.
- Reconnect the display and allow it to finish booting before opening the setup app.
This clears a stalled Wi‑Fi radio, DHCP lease, or temporary software state without deleting accounts or routines. Avoid repeatedly tapping setup while the router is still restarting; the phone may cache a failed discovery attempt.
3. Check the Wi‑Fi name, password, and radio band
Re-enter the current credentials
Open the display’s network settings or the setup flow in its platform app and enter the current Wi‑Fi password again. This is essential after a router replacement, an ISP migration, a password change, or a reset that restored an older network name. Check capitalization and special characters; a display may remain associated with a remembered network even though that network no longer exists.
Try 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz separately
If the router publishes separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, test the other band. Amazon’s Echo guidance explicitly recommends this comparison. Keep the phone on the same network during setup so discovery traffic can pass between the two devices.

A router’s Smart Connect feature may move the phone and display between bands at the wrong moment. Lenovo advises checking with the router manufacturer for instructions to turn Smart Connect off when troubleshooting its Smart Display. Treat this as a temporary diagnostic change unless the router vendor recommends a permanent configuration.
4. Remove distance and interference from the test
Move the display beside the router
For troubleshooting, place the display in the same room as the router, with a clear path and no large appliances between them. Amazon’s Echo Wi‑Fi guidance uses a target of about 30 feet (10 meters) or less. Once setup succeeds, move the display back gradually to find a reliable location.

Eliminate common sources of radio noise
- Temporarily move away from microwave ovens, baby monitors, cordless-phone bases, and dense clusters of electronics.
- Do not hide the display behind a television, metal cabinet, or networking equipment.
- Test before adding extenders or mesh nodes; a weak or misconfigured extender can make diagnosis harder.
A connection that works next to the router but fails in the intended room points to coverage, interference, or roaming behavior rather than an incorrect account. Improve placement or the wireless design after confirming the display itself is healthy.
5. Use the platform’s correct setup path
Google-based displays
Use the Google Home app, not a generic Bluetooth or router utility. Keep the phone connected to the same home network that the display should join, and follow the app’s add-device flow. If the app repeatedly fails to find the display, Google lists trying setup from another phone or tablet as an advanced step. A second handset can reveal a permission or cached-app problem on the first one.
Echo Show devices
Use the Alexa app and its device-setup flow. Sign in to the account that owns the household devices, and keep the phone on the same network during discovery. If the display was previously registered to another account, remove that old registration through the normal account controls before attempting a new setup.
Other manufacturers
Follow the maker’s current app and model-specific instructions. Lenovo states that its Smart Display requires the phone and display to be on the same network for pairing. A display can show a Wi‑Fi icon while still being unreachable from the phone if the two are on different SSIDs, a guest network, or isolated VLANs.
6. When the setup app cannot find the display
Confirm phone permissions
- Allow Bluetooth when the setup flow requests nearby-device discovery.
- Allow local-network access on phones that expose that permission separately.
- Keep the app open while discovery runs; temporarily disable battery-saving restrictions that suspend it.
After granting a permission, force-close and reopen the platform app, then repeat discovery. Do not infer a hardware failure from one denied permission.

Leave guest and isolated networks
Connect both phone and display to the router’s main household network. Guest-network isolation and client or access-point isolation can allow internet access while blocking the local traffic needed for setup. Lenovo specifically identifies client isolation and blocked multicast DNS (mDNS) as Smart Display setup blockers.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →In the router administration page, look for labels such as Guest isolation, AP isolation, Client isolation, Wireless isolation, or a setting that blocks LAN-to-LAN communication. Disable the relevant isolation temporarily, save the change, restart the display’s setup flow, and restore the protection afterward if it is not needed on the main network. If the router is managed by an ISP, ask its support team where these controls are located rather than changing unrelated firewall settings.
Use a phone hotspot only as a diagnosis
Create a temporary hotspot with a phone and attempt to connect the display. A successful hotspot connection shows that the display’s Wi‑Fi hardware and basic setup can work, so focus on the home router’s security mode, DHCP, isolation, band steering, or ISP equipment. Google warns that hotspot use with Nest and Home devices is not fully supported; treat the result as a test, not a permanent home-network design.
If the display cannot join the hotspot either, retry after a power cycle and verify the hotspot password. Failure on both the home network and a known-good hotspot makes a display-side fault more plausible.
7. The display is on Wi‑Fi but cannot control a device
Start in the controlled device’s own app
- Open the light, plug, thermostat, or appliance manufacturer’s app.
- Check whether the device is shown as online and responds to a basic command.
- Repair its power, batteries, Wi‑Fi connection, hub, or account link if that app also reports it offline.
If the manufacturer’s app fails, repairing the display or voice assistant will not fix the underlying device. Restore the device’s own connection first.

Repair the Alexa integration when only Alexa fails
If the manufacturer’s app works but Alexa cannot control the device, remove and add or reactivate the relevant skill in the Alexa app, then run device discovery again. Amazon gives this as the remedy for a device that works in its manufacturer’s app but not through Alexa. Confirm that the product is compatible with the skill and that Alexa and the manufacturer’s account are linked to the intended household.
Refresh status and location
Refresh the device tile or status in the platform app. Check that it is online, assigned to the correct home, and placed in the expected room. Duplicate entries left after a re-pair can cause a spoken command to target an old record; remove stale entries only after confirming which record is active.

Wi‑Fi devices
Keep the controlled device and the display’s platform account on the same intended home network during setup. A display may be online while the appliance has lost its own Wi‑Fi credentials or received a new address after a router change.
Matter over Wi‑Fi
For Alexa Matter Wi‑Fi devices, Amazon says to use the same 2.4 GHz network as the compatible Matter controller. If the controller and device are split across isolated SSIDs or VLANs, commissioning or control can fail even though both show internet access.

Matter, Zigbee, and Bluetooth proximity
Amazon’s guidance places Matter, Zigbee, and Bluetooth devices within approximately 30 feet (9 meters) of the compatible controller as a practical proximity target. The controller may be the display, a hub, or another platform component, depending on the product. Move the device closer for a test before changing pairings; distance and interference can mimic an account problem.

Zigbee and some Bluetooth products depend on a separate hub or bridge. Verify that the hub has power and appears online in its own app, then refresh the platform integration. Re-pairing every bulb is unnecessary if the hub itself is merely offline.
9. Router settings that commonly block discovery
| Router behavior | How it breaks smart-home setup | Diagnostic change |
|---|---|---|
| Guest network isolation | Phone and display can reach the internet but cannot exchange local discovery traffic. | Use the main LAN for both devices. |
| Client/AP isolation | Wireless clients are prevented from communicating with one another. | Disable isolation temporarily or ask the router vendor for a trusted-device exception. |
| Blocked mDNS or multicast | Service announcements used during discovery never reach the phone or display. | Allow local multicast/mDNS on the trusted network. |
| Smart Connect or band steering | Older clients can be moved between bands during setup. | Test separate SSIDs or follow the router maker’s procedure to disable Smart Connect. |
| Different VLANs or SSIDs | Internet works, but local control traffic is routed or filtered. | Place the phone, display, and required hub on networks that permit the needed local traffic. |
Router menus use different names and may hide these controls in an advanced wireless, security, or IoT section. Change one setting at a time and record the original value so you can restore it. Avoid weakening the entire network permanently just to accommodate a single setup attempt.
10. Factory reset only after the non-destructive checks
What a reset changes
A factory reset can erase account links, room assignments, routines, Wi‑Fi credentials, and smart-home connections. It is appropriate when the display retains an unusable configuration, setup is trapped in a loop, or the manufacturer specifically directs it after other tests—not as the first response to a router outage.
Reset controls vary by model
For some Lenovo Smart Display models, the documented reset action is holding Volume Up and Volume Down together for eight seconds. Exact buttons and timing differ by model, so use the instructions for the specific display rather than assuming this sequence applies to another brand or generation.
Set it up from a clean baseline
- Write down the Wi‑Fi name, password, platform account, room names, and any device integrations you will need to restore.
- Confirm the router is working and temporarily place the display near it.
- Perform the model’s reset procedure and wait for the welcome screen.
- Install or update the correct platform app, grant Bluetooth and local-network permissions, and complete setup on the main household network.
- Restore integrations one at a time, testing a device after each addition.
11. Know when to escalate
- Contact the display manufacturer: the display cannot connect to a known-good phone hotspot or another network after a reset, repeatedly reboots, or shows a persistent hardware or radio error.
- Contact the ISP or router vendor: multiple household devices fail, the modem repeatedly loses service, or isolation, mDNS, DHCP, or band-steering controls cannot be located.
- Contact the controlled-device maker: its own app cannot bring the light, thermostat, hub, or appliance online.
When requesting support, provide the display model, platform app, router model, Wi‑Fi band tested, approximate distance, whether a hotspot worked, and the exact step where setup failed. That information lets support distinguish an internet outage, local-discovery block, integration problem, and hardware fault without repeating every basic test.
Quick Recap
A compact decision path
- Test a phone or laptop on the same Wi‑Fi.
- If several devices fail, restart the modem/router and investigate the ISP connection.
- If only the display fails, power-cycle it for up to one minute, re-enter the password, and test 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz.
- Move it within roughly 30 feet of the router and remove interference.
- Use Google Home, Alexa, or the manufacturer’s correct app with phone permissions enabled.
- If discovery fails, leave guest or isolated networks and check mDNS or Smart Connect behavior.
- If control fails after Wi‑Fi works, test the controlled device’s own app, then repair the platform skill, account, hub, or protocol pairing.
- Reset only after these checks; escalate if the display fails on a known-good network or if the wider home network is failing.
