The right fix depends on where startup is slow and what your diagnosis found. Disable only unnecessary startup apps when the delay is caused by programs loading at sign-in; use a clean boot for a suspected third-party conflict; use Safe Mode or boot logging for a driver or service investigation; run DISM followed by SFC for evidence of damaged Windows system files; use Startup Repair when Windows cannot boot; and address storage, updates or hardware limits when those are the constraint.

Before changing anything, record whether the delay occurs before the sign-in screen, between sign-in and a usable desktop, or because Windows fails to start. After each change, compare the same stage. That prevents a change that shortens one phase from being mistaken for a complete solution.

Start with the symptom stage you already identified

A long startup is not one problem. The action that fits a desktop that eventually appears is different from the recovery path for a machine that never reaches Windows.

What you observe Most relevant next action What the action can and cannot establish
Windows reaches the desktop, but programs take a long time to become usable Review Startup apps and background activity Can reduce work launched at sign-in; it will not repair a damaged boot configuration
The delay changes when a particular app or service is present Perform a documented clean boot Can isolate a third-party conflict through controlled re-enabling
The problem disappears with basic drivers and services Use Safe Mode and, if needed, boot logging Narrows the field; Safe Mode alone does not identify the exact cause
There is evidence of missing or corrupted Windows files Run DISM, then SFC Repairs supported system files; it is not a general speed optimizer
Windows will not start or repeatedly fails during boot Run Startup Repair in Windows Recovery Environment Targets boot and startup failures, not an ordinary slow desktop
Storage is nearly full, software is outdated, or hardware is below current needs Free storage, install applicable updates and reassess the hardware limit Addresses the diagnosed constraint; an upgrade is not automatically the answer

How do I stop programs from opening at startup?

When the delay is after sign-in and you have identified unnecessary programs launching automatically, make the narrowest possible change in Task Manager. Microsoft Support notes that apps running at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage.

Disable one recognized, nonessential app at a time

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Right-click an app you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in.
  4. Select Disable.
  5. Restart Windows and compare the same point in the startup sequence with your original observation.

Do not use a blanket disable operation. Keep security software, accessibility tools, device utilities, backup or synchronization tools you depend on, and anything whose function you do not understand. If an entry is unfamiliar, identify it before changing it rather than guessing from its name. A startup entry can be inconvenient without being the cause of the delay, so change a small number of known items and measure the result.

What to do when disabling an app helps

Leave the item disabled only if you are comfortable starting that program manually or running without its sign-in integration. Check the app for an update, and look in its own settings for a less disruptive launch option. If the delay remains at the same stage, restore the item and continue with the diagnostic path that matches your evidence instead of disabling more software indiscriminately.

How to isolate a third-party app or service with a clean boot

A clean boot is appropriate when a software conflict is plausible: for example, the delay changes after installing or updating a non-Microsoft utility, security component, device helper or other background service. It temporarily removes normal startup functionality, so document every change and plan to restore normal startup after testing.

Prepare a reversible test

  • Write down the currently enabled startup apps and non-Microsoft services, or capture screenshots.
  • Make sure you know how to undo each change.
  • Expect some features to be unavailable while the computer is in a clean-boot state.

Configure the clean boot

  1. Press Win+R, type msconfig, and press Enter to open System Configuration.
  2. Open the Services tab.
  3. Select Hide all Microsoft services. This protection step prevents you from disabling Microsoft services in the remaining list.
  4. Disable the remaining non-Microsoft services, using your written record so the changes are reversible.
  5. Open Task Manager from the System Configuration startup controls, or open it separately with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  6. In Startup apps, disable the enabled startup items while recording what you changed.
  7. Restart and test the same startup stage that was slow before.

Interpret the result and narrow the conflict

If the delay disappears in the clean-boot environment, that establishes that one or more disabled startup items or services contributes to the symptom; it does not tell you which one. Re-enable items systematically in groups, restart after each controlled change, and split a group when the problem returns. This approach is faster and more reliable than turning everything on and off randomly. Microsoft describes systematic re-enabling and restarting as the way to identify the responsible startup app or service.

When you identify an item, check with the app or device maker for an update. If no compatible update exists, leave that component from launching at sign-in only when its function is not required, or choose a supported replacement. Do not leave Windows permanently in a diagnostic configuration.

Restore normal startup

  1. Open msconfig again.
  2. On the General tab, choose Normal startup.
  3. On the Services tab, re-enable the services you disabled, keeping Hide all Microsoft services selected while you work through the non-Microsoft list.
  4. Restore the startup items you still need in Task Manager.
  5. Restart and verify that required features, networking and security tools work normally.

Changing advanced System Configuration settings incorrectly can make a computer unusable or conflict with organizational policies. If the PC is managed by an employer or school, follow its support process before changing service settings.

Use Safe Mode when a driver or service is suspected

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. It is useful when the startup problem disappears with the basic configuration because default settings, basic drivers or ordinary services become less likely explanations. That result narrows the investigation; it is not the final fix and does not identify the exact driver or service.

Reach Startup Settings through Windows Recovery Environment

  1. Enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
  2. Select Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Advanced options.
  4. Select Startup Settings.
  5. Select Restart.
  6. Choose the Safe Mode option from the numbered startup menu after the restart.

Test the same part of startup that was slow in normal mode. If the delay remains in Safe Mode, a normal third-party startup item is less likely to be the primary explanation. If it disappears, continue by reviewing recently changed drivers, device software and services rather than treating Safe Mode as a permanent operating mode.

Use boot logging for an advanced driver investigation

Startup Settings also offers Enable boot logging. This creates ntbtlog.txt, a list of drivers loaded during startup. Use the file as evidence when comparing a problematic normal boot with the limited Safe Mode configuration. A boot log is a driver list, not an automatic diagnosis; interpret it alongside recent hardware or driver changes and the timing of the delay.

If the device uses encryption, have the BitLocker recovery key available before entering recovery options. WinRE may require that key to unlock the system.

Repair suspected Windows system-file corruption with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when your diagnosis points to missing or corrupted Windows system files, such as repair evidence or system errors that are consistent with file damage. They are not a universal remedy for every slow startup. Microsoft states that DISM should run before the System File Checker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the commands in the required order

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth.
  3. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window or restart solely because progress appears paused.
  4. Run sfc /scannow.
  5. Allow SFC to reach 100 percent and note the result it reports.
  6. Restart Windows and compare the startup stage that originally showed the problem.

DISM repairs the Windows image and supplies files that SFC can use. SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files from its cached copy. If SFC cannot perform the requested operation, Microsoft suggests trying the scan in Safe Mode. A successful scan does not prove that a slow boot was caused by file corruption; it only reports what the repair tools found and fixed.

When Windows will not start: use Startup Repair

Startup Repair is for a different class of problem: Windows cannot start, repeatedly fails during boot, or stops before a usable session. It checks for certain missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data, a damaged master boot record, incompatible drivers and registry errors. It is not the default step for a PC that eventually reaches the desktop but takes too long.

Run Startup Repair in WinRE

  1. Enter Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Select Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Advanced options.
  4. Select Startup Repair.
  5. Choose the Windows installation and follow the on-screen prompts.

Startup Repair may attempt an automatic repair and then report problems it could not fix. Record that result before moving to another recovery action. If device encryption is enabled, the BitLocker recovery key may be requested.

If the built-in recovery screen is inaccessible

Microsoft documents booting into WinRE from bootable USB or DVD media. A USB flash drive for Windows recovery media is therefore a task-enabling item when you cannot reach recovery tools normally, not a direct cure for ordinary slow startup. A generic flash drive is not automatically configured as recovery media; it must be prepared as bootable Windows recovery media, and booting from it may require selecting the correct device in the firmware boot menu.

Address storage pressure, updates and hardware limits

Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software and hardware that no longer meets modern performance needs among possible contributors to slow PC performance. Apply the remedy that matches the evidence instead of buying a component first.

Free space when the system drive is constrained

  • Remove or archive files you no longer need.
  • Uninstall unused applications.
  • Empty temporary locations using Windows storage tools.
  • Keep enough working space for Windows updates and normal background activity.

After freeing storage, restart and compare the same stage. Storage cleanup helps only when space pressure contributed to the delay; it does not repair a third-party conflict or damaged boot files.

Install applicable Windows and driver updates

Apply available Windows updates and optional driver updates when your diagnosis points to outdated software or a known device compatibility issue. Restart after updates that require it, then repeat the same observation. Avoid installing random driver packages from unverified sources; use the normal Windows update route or the device maker’s supported package.

Recognize a hardware ceiling

Older PCs may not improve significantly from software changes. If storage activity, memory pressure or another hardware limit remains the bottleneck after software causes are excluded, upgrading the device may be the long-term option. An SSD or other storage upgrade is conditional: identify a storage bottleneck first and verify the exact PC’s interface, physical format, firmware support and migration requirements. Do not assume that any single part will fix a slow startup.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s Windows startup settings guidance. If the computer is still on Windows 10, account for its support status when deciding whether to keep troubleshooting the existing installation, move to a supported configuration or replace aging hardware.

How to compare each change without losing the diagnosis

Use the same observation method after every intervention:

  1. Write down the original stage: before sign-in, sign-in to desktop, or failure to boot.
  2. Record the exact change, date and items affected.
  3. Restart under comparable conditions, including the same external devices where practical.
  4. Check whether the same stage improved, stayed unchanged or became worse.
  5. Undo a change that creates a new problem before testing a different branch.

Choose among interventions using four questions:

  • Where is the symptom? Pre-sign-in delays suggest a different path from post-sign-in background activity.
  • What evidence do you have? Startup entries, a third-party service, system-file errors, boot configuration failure, storage pressure and hardware limits call for different tools.
  • How disruptive is the test? A Task Manager change is narrow; a clean boot removes functions temporarily; recovery tools may require a key or external media.
  • Does the action address the diagnosed cause? Avoid running recovery commands simply because they are popular. Match the tool to the evidence.

Common mistakes that make a slow startup harder to fix

  • Disabling everything in Startup apps: this can remove useful security, accessibility or device functionality and leaves you without a clear cause.
  • Leaving a clean boot enabled: the diagnostic state is not a normal operating configuration. Restore Normal startup and required items after testing.
  • Calling Safe Mode the solution: Safe Mode is an isolation environment. Continue investigating the driver, service or setting that differs from normal Windows.
  • Running SFC before DISM: Microsoft specifically recommends DISM first so the component repair source is available to SFC.
  • Using Startup Repair for an ordinary slow desktop: reserve it for failure to start or repeated boot failure.
  • Assuming a USB drive speeds up Windows: recovery media helps you reach WinRE when normal access fails; it is not a performance upgrade.
  • Buying hardware without verifying the bottleneck: confirm that storage, memory or another component is actually limiting startup and that the replacement fits the exact model.

A practical stop point

Stop changing settings when the startup stage you identified returns to normal and required features still work. If the delay persists after the cause-specific path, keep the records from your tests, the DISM and SFC results, any ntbtlog.txt evidence and Startup Repair’s report. Those details make the next support request actionable and prevent repeating changes that already failed.
