If your second monitor isn’t detected, first check that it is powered on, set to the correct input, and connected securely. In Windows, select Extend with Windows + P, then use Detect in Display settings. If that doesn’t help, test the monitor directly with a compatible cable and check whether your computer’s ports and graphics support the display you’re trying to add.
1. Check the monitor, input, cable, and display mode
- Make sure the monitor is switched on and its power cable is connected. Use the monitor’s own controls to select the input that matches the connection in use, such as HDMI or DisplayPort.
- Reseat the video cable at both the monitor and computer. If the monitor has more than one input, confirm the cable is plugged into the input selected in its on-screen menu.
- On Windows, press Windows + P and choose Extend if you want a separate desktop across both screens. Other modes, including PC screen only and Second screen only, change which screen is active; they are not the extended-desktop arrangement. See Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions.
A monitor that appears in the operating system but shows a black or blank image is different from one that is absent from Display settings. If it is detected but dark, check the monitor’s brightness and built-in controls as well as its input. Apple lists brightness, connection, and display controls among the checks for a dark external display: If your external display is dark or low resolution.

2. Ask Windows to detect the display
In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect. If the labels differ after a Windows update, search Settings for Display and look for the multiple-display controls. Microsoft’s guide to using multiple monitors documents the Detect option.

If the setup worked before and stopped unexpectedly, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver; Microsoft says this may resolve an external-monitor problem. Restarting the computer is another check, not a guaranteed fix. These steps are among Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting suggestions.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 no longer receives free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes after that date. This does not change the steps above, but it matters if you are deciding whether to keep using that operating system.
3. Isolate the cable, adapter, dock, and monitor
- If possible, try a known-good cable that matches the computer and monitor ports and supports the resolution and refresh rate you need. A cable swap is a diagnostic test; a cable that physically fits may still lack the required video capability. Apple notes that an unsupported cable or adapter can cause a dark display or limit resolution or refresh rate in its external-display guidance.
- If the connection runs through a dock, hub, or dongle, disconnect it and connect the monitor directly to the computer, if its ports allow. If the direct connection works, reconnect the dock and other devices one at a time to identify where the failure returns.
- If available, connect the monitor to another computer or connect a different monitor to this computer. These comparisons help narrow down whether the issue follows the monitor, cable, adapter, dock, or computer; they do not by themselves prove which component is faulty.
Microsoft recommends disconnecting accessories, reseating the connection, trying another video cable, and testing the monitor on another system as troubleshooting checks. See Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting steps.

4. Verify that the connection can carry video
Match the computer’s video output, the cable or adapter, and the monitor’s input. For USB-C, the connector’s shape alone does not establish that it supports video. The computer port, cable, and connected device or adapter must support the relevant USB-C Alternate Mode, such as DisplayPort, MHL, or HDMI, and the cable or adapter must be attached to a port that supports that mode. Check the specifications for your exact computer model and any port markings. Microsoft explains these requirements in Fix USB-C problems in Windows.

- The computer port supports video output.
- The monitor has a compatible input, or the adapter correctly bridges the computer’s output and monitor’s input.
- The cable and adapter support the required video mode, resolution, and refresh rate.
- The computer supports the number of displays you want to use.
- The accessory provides an independent display output if you need an extended desktop.
A splitter that duplicates one video signal does not create a second independent display for an extended desktop. Microsoft distinguishes splitters from additional display outputs in its troubleshooting guidance. Some computers with only one video output may support another display through a compatible dock or USB adapter, but check the computer maker’s specifications first.
If one external monitor works but adding another does not, the graphics adapter or computer may be limited to fewer displays than you want. Microsoft advises checking with the graphics adapter’s manufacturer. On a Mac, the supported display count depends on the exact model and the displays’ resolution and refresh rate; consult Apple’s Connect displays to your Mac information for that model.
