1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA Samsung phone can appear not to connect to a Chromebook because “connect” can mean four different things: Phone Hub features, a nearby file transfer, Google Drive access, or a wired USB transfer. Each uses a different setup. Choose the path that matches your goal, then follow its steps. If you are trying to use Samsung Smart Switch, stop: Samsung Support states that “Chromebooks are not compatible with Smart Switch.”
First, identify what kind of connection you need
Phone Hub, Quick Share, Google Drive and USB do not provide the same connection. Troubleshooting the wrong one can make a working feature look broken. Use this table to select the right route.

Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, Galaxy software and school or workplace management can change which menus are shown. The Phone Hub procedure documented by Samsung is specifically for Galaxy Chromebook Plus, so another Chromebook may use slightly different labels or may not expose every feature.

Set up the phone from the Chromebook
- On the Chromebook, select the Phone icon at the bottom right.
- Select Get Started.
- Read the prompt and choose Accept & Continue.
- In the Chromebook’s connected-device setup, select Set up next to Android phone.
- When setup finishes, open Settings > Connected devices and select the phone.
- Turn on Phone Hub, then enable the individual Phone Hub features you actually want.
If the Phone icon, Android-phone entry or a particular feature is missing, do not assume that a cable or a different USB mode will fix it. Samsung notes that menu availability can vary on other Chromebook models. ChromeOS version, Galaxy software and administrator policies on a school or business Chromebook can also affect what appears. Check that both devices have network access and install available software updates before trying the setup again.
When pairing succeeds but a Phone Hub feature does not work
Phone Hub and its individual features are separate switches. A phone can be listed under Connected devices while a desired feature remains off. Return to Settings > Connected devices, choose the paired phone, and verify both the main Phone Hub switch and the specific feature switch. This is different from a file-transfer problem: Phone Hub pairing does not put the phone’s storage into the Chromebook’s file manager.
Use Quick Share for a nearby file
Quick Share is the documented wireless route when the immediate goal is to send a photo, document or another file from a Galaxy phone to a Chromebook. It does not require you to mount the phone as a USB drive.
Recommended Free Tools
Prepare Quick Share on the Chromebook
- Open Chromebook Settings.
- Go to Connected devices.
- Open the Quick Share settings.
- Choose a device name for the Chromebook.
- Choose the visibility setting that allows the Galaxy phone to see the Chromebook.
Send the file from the Samsung phone
- Open the file on the Galaxy phone.
- Tap Share, then choose Quick Share.
- Select the Chromebook from the available devices.
- Follow the prompts shown on either device to accept or complete the transfer.
If the Chromebook is not listed, return to its Quick Share settings and check the selected visibility option and device name. Keep the devices available to each other while you retry. Quick Share is intended for a nearby transfer; it is not the same as Google Drive synchronization and will not make the phone’s whole storage appear in the Chromebook’s file manager.
Use Google Drive when you need cloud access or synchronization
Drive is useful when the file does not need to move directly from one device to the other. Samsung’s Galaxy phone and Chromebook guidance uses the same Google account on both devices.
- Confirm that the Galaxy phone and Chromebook are signed in to the same Google account.
- On the phone, open Google Drive and upload the file.
- On the Chromebook, open Drive with that account.
- Open the uploaded item or download it to the Chromebook if you need a local copy.
This route depends on network access and account synchronization. If a newly uploaded item is not visible, check the network connection on both devices and install available software updates. Verify that automatic synchronization and the intended account items are enabled, then try a manual account sync. Samsung lists removing and re-adding the Google account as a later troubleshooting step; only do that if the earlier checks fail, and make sure you have the account sign-in credentials before removing it.
A Drive problem does not indicate that Phone Hub or USB is broken. Drive can work even when a cable is charge-only, while a USB connection can work even if you have not configured Phone Hub.
Fix a USB connection that only charges the phone
Charging and data transfer are separate capabilities. On Galaxy phones running One UI 8.0, Samsung documents Charging phone only as the default USB connection mode. That setting can make a connected phone charge normally while no files are available to the Chromebook.

Change the USB mode on One UI 8.0
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the Chromebook with the USB cable.
- On the phone, pull down the Quick panel.
- Tap the USB for charging phone notification.
- In USB settings, select Transferring files / Android Auto.
- Return to the Chromebook and check for the phone or its files again.
Samsung documents different wording on older software. Look for the USB notification and a setting that changes the connection from charging to file transfer rather than expecting the exact One UI 8.0 labels. If no USB notification appears, investigate the cable, connector and ports before changing unrelated phone settings.
Why a cable can charge but fail to transfer data
Not every USB cable contains the wiring needed for data. A charge-only cable can deliver power and still prevent file transfer. A cable can also lose data capability through damage, while moisture or debris around a connector can interfere with a stable connection. A phone case may keep the plug from seating fully.
- Try a known data-capable USB cable.
- Inspect the cable and both device ports for visible damage or moisture.
- Remove the phone case temporarily if it presses against the connector.
- Try another compatible Chromebook port if one is available.
- Check both devices’ ports before buying a replacement cable.
Do not treat a successful charging indication as proof that the cable supports data. Test the replacement path only after selecting the phone’s file-transfer mode. If the phone still does not appear, the remaining possibilities include a damaged cable, a poor physical fit, a port problem or software-specific behavior on one of the devices.
Do not use Smart Switch with a Chromebook
Samsung Support’s Smart Switch troubleshooting guidance states: “Chromebooks are not compatible with Smart Switch.” Smart Switch is therefore not a repair step for this connection problem and should not be installed as a workaround.
For ordinary file movement, use Quick Share for a nearby wireless transfer, Google Drive for cloud access, or USB after selecting a data-transfer mode and confirming that the cable supports data. For Chromebook phone features, use Phone Hub. These supported routes address different jobs and avoid the compatibility limitation Samsung documents for Smart Switch.
Resolve Google account synchronization problems
If the Chromebook and Galaxy phone are signed in but account data is not appearing, treat this as an account-sync issue rather than a Phone Hub or cable issue.
- Check that both devices can reach the network.
- Install available updates on the phone and Chromebook.
- Confirm that automatic synchronization is enabled.
- Check that the specific items or services you expect to sync are enabled.
- Run a manual account sync and check again.
- If the problem remains, remove and re-add the Google account, keeping the sign-in credentials available.
Account synchronization does not copy every file on the phone to the Chromebook. For a particular file, upload it in Drive and then open or download it on the Chromebook. For a direct nearby send, use Quick Share instead.

Use this sequence to avoid changing settings that cannot affect the problem you have.

- Name the outcome. Decide whether you need Phone Hub controls, one nearby file, Drive access, account synchronization or a wired file transfer.
- Choose the matching method. Use Phone Hub for Chromebook phone features, Quick Share for a nearby file, Drive for cloud access, and USB for a cable-based transfer.
- Check the method’s primary setting. For Phone Hub, verify the phone under Connected devices and turn on the required feature. For Quick Share, check Chromebook visibility. For Drive, check the Google account and sync settings. For USB, select file transfer instead of charging only.
- Check the environment. Confirm network access where the chosen method needs it, apply available updates, and consider whether a school or workplace administrator controls the Chromebook.
- Check the physical path only for USB. Try a known data-capable cable, inspect both ports, remove a case that blocks the plug and try another compatible port.
- Use a supported alternative. If the cable remains unreliable, move the file with Quick Share or Drive. If a Phone Hub feature is unavailable on the model, those file methods do not replace Phone Hub controls, but they can still complete a file-transfer task.
This order separates software pairing, cloud synchronization, wireless sharing and physical USB transfer. A failure in one path does not prove that every connection method is unavailable.
Check the requirements before repeating setup
Before trying the same connection again, verify the few conditions that apply to the chosen route:
- Phone Hub: Start from the Chromebook Phone icon, complete the Android-phone setup, then check both the Phone Hub switch and the individual feature switch.
- Quick Share: Configure a Chromebook device name and a visibility option that allows discovery, then start from the phone’s Share > Quick Share menu.
- Drive: Use the same Google account on both devices, upload the item from the phone and allow network synchronization before looking for it on the Chromebook.
- USB: Use a cable capable of data, select the phone’s file-transfer mode and make sure the connector is fully seated.
Network access and current software matter for Phone Hub and Drive troubleshooting. A school or employer Chromebook may also have administrator controls that change which connected-device menus are available. If a menu is absent rather than merely disabled, model, ChromeOS version or management policy may be the reason.

Phone Hub is for phone-related Chromebook features and controls, not for browsing the entire Galaxy storage. Quick Share is the direct nearby option for an individual file. Drive adds an upload step but is useful when you want the file available through cloud storage or need to access it later from another location. USB is the physical-transfer route and depends on both the phone’s selected mode and a data-capable cable.
These are alternatives for different tasks, not interchangeable repairs. Changing a USB setting cannot make a missing Phone Hub feature appear. Pairing Phone Hub does not make a charge-only cable transfer files. Uploading to Drive does not mean the phone is mounted in the Chromebook file manager. Selecting the method first prevents unnecessary resets, app installations and cable purchases.
When a cable, adapter or port is the real problem
If file transfer fails after the phone is set to a data mode, isolate the physical path one part at a time. Test a known data-capable cable, reseat both ends, and inspect the phone and Chromebook ports for damage or moisture. If you use a USB adapter, check that the adapter and the Chromebook port are compatible and that the plug fits completely. Remove a case that prevents full insertion, then try another compatible port if available.
Check the existing cable and both device ports before spending money on a replacement. A new cable is justified only when the current one is charge-only, damaged or incompatible with data transfer. Built-in Phone Hub, Quick Share and Drive do not require a paid connection service or a separate transfer utility.
What the symptoms usually mean
The phone is paired, but I cannot browse its files
That is expected when you configured Phone Hub. Phone Hub connects Chromebook phone features; it is not a USB storage browser. Use Quick Share for a nearby file, Drive for cloud access, or connect by USB and select Transferring files / Android Auto.

The Chromebook never appears in Quick Share
Open Chromebook Settings > Connected devices, confirm Quick Share is configured, and choose a visibility setting that permits discovery. Then start the send again from the phone with Share > Quick Share.
The file is on the phone but not in Drive on the Chromebook
Upload it from the Drive app on the Galaxy phone, verify that both devices use the same Google account, and check network access and synchronization. A file stored only in local phone storage will not appear in Drive until it is uploaded.
The phone shows charging but the Chromebook shows no files
On One UI 8.0, change the USB mode from Charging phone only to Transferring files / Android Auto. If that option is unavailable or the connection drops, test a data-capable cable, inspect for damage or moisture, remove any case interfering with the plug and try another compatible port.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the Chromebook or Galaxy model is the limiting factor
Samsung’s documented Phone Hub sequence is for Galaxy Chromebook Plus, and it cautions that menus can differ on other Chromebook models. The same qualification applies when software versions change: One UI 8.0 uses the USB labels documented above, while older Galaxy software may use different wording. ChromeOS editions managed by a school or employer can also restrict connected-device features.
Before replacing hardware, identify the exact task and try the method designed for it. A model-specific Phone Hub limitation does not prevent Drive or Quick Share from moving a file, and a charge-only cable does not prevent Phone Hub pairing. Matching the symptom to the correct path is the fastest way to restore the connection you actually need.

Can I use Samsung Smart Switch with a Chromebook?
No. Samsung Support states that Chromebooks are not compatible with Smart Switch. Use Quick Share, Google Drive or a correctly configured USB transfer instead.
How can I transfer a file without a USB cable?
Use Quick Share for a nearby wireless transfer: configure it under Chromebook Settings > Connected devices, set visibility, then choose Share > Quick Share on the Galaxy phone. For cloud access, upload the file to Drive and open or download it on the Chromebook.
Does Phone Hub let me browse my Samsung phone’s files?
No. Phone Hub provides Chromebook phone features and controls; it does not mount the phone’s storage in the file manager. Use Quick Share, Drive or USB file transfer for files.
What should I do if my Chromebook is missing from Quick Share?
Open Chromebook Settings > Connected devices > Quick Share, confirm the device name and choose a visibility setting that allows discovery. Then retry from the phone’s Share > Quick Share menu.
Do my phone and Chromebook need the same Google account?
Samsung’s Drive workflow uses the same Google account on both devices so the uploaded file is available on the Chromebook. Quick Share is a nearby device-to-device transfer and follows its own visibility setup.
Could a school or work Chromebook block the connection?
Administrator policies can affect connected-device menus and Phone Hub availability. If the Phone icon, Android-phone entry or a feature is missing, check with the administrator after confirming the Chromebook model and software version.
Should I buy a new cable immediately?
No. First inspect both ports, remove any case blocking the connector, try another compatible port and test a known data-capable cable. Replace the cable only if the existing one is charge-only, damaged or otherwise unable to carry data.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the job: Phone Hub for Chromebook phone features, Quick Share for a nearby file, Drive for cloud access, and USB after selecting file transfer instead of Charging phone only. Check visibility, account sync, software, cable capability and ports before replacing hardware, and do not use Smart Switch because Samsung says Chromebooks are incompatible.
