Most Galaxy Watch8 Classic connection failures come from a short list of causes: an unsupported phone, Bluetooth switched off, airplane mode, missing app permissions, power saving, or a botched phone change. Work through the steps below in order. They go from least to most disruptive, and the factory reset comes last. The steps follow Samsung’s own support guidance, and menu names can vary by region, software version and phone.
Step 1: Confirm your phone is supported
Samsung’s U.S. compatibility table lists the Galaxy Watch8 series as requiring a phone running Android 12.0 or later with at least 1.5 GB of RAM. iPhones are not supported, and Samsung says certain non-Samsung phone models and tablets are also unsupported. If your phone is on that list, no setting will fix the problem. Check your exact model against Samsung’s compatibility page.

Step 2: Work out what “not connected” means
Open the Galaxy Wearable app on the phone. Samsung says the phone and watch must be paired through this app and connected over Bluetooth to sync content. What the app shows tells you where to look:

| Start | The watch and phone are not connected (not paired). | Go to Step 2’s pairing note below, and see the new-phone section if you recently switched phones. |
| Remotely connected to watch or Disconnected from watch | Bluetooth is off. | Turn Bluetooth on for both devices (Step 3). |
If you see Start and have not changed phones, pair the watch again through the app rather than the phone’s generic Bluetooth menu.

Step 3: Check Bluetooth, airplane mode and range
- Turn Bluetooth on for both the phone and the watch.
- Turn airplane mode off on both. Samsung notes that airplane mode automatically disables Bluetooth, and you have to switch Bluetooth back on by hand afterward.
- Bring the devices close together and remove obstacles. Samsung gives a maximum Bluetooth range of 10 m (32 ft), but real-world distance varies with the environment, and walls or crowded radio spaces shorten it.
- Restart both devices, then reopen Galaxy Wearable.
Step 4: Check permissions and power settings
Permissions
- On the phone, review the permissions for Galaxy Wearable and the Galaxy Watch plugin, and allow any that are listed as not allowed.
- Samsung’s connection guide also says to allow the Google Play services permissions listed as not allowed.
- If a specific kind of content won’t transfer, check the permissions for the matching app on the watch.
Power and mode
- Turn off power-saving mode on both the phone and the watch.
- Make sure watch-only mode is off.
- Keep both devices above 25% battery. Samsung recommends this level for data transfer.
Step 5: Restart, then update
A normal restart clears most minor glitches, according to Samsung’s Canadian guide. If the watch is frozen, Samsung says to hold the Home and Back buttons together for at least seven seconds, until the Samsung logo appears. That guide covers devices sold in Canada, and button labels and steps can differ elsewhere.
Once the watch reconnects, update Galaxy Wearable and the watch software. The watch has to be connected to the phone over Bluetooth to update through Galaxy Wearable. If the connection is still down, fix that first.

If the problem started after switching phones
Don’t keep retrying from the new phone’s Bluetooth screen. Use the transfer route:
- On the watch, go to Settings > General > Transfer watch to new phone.
- On the new phone, open Galaxy Wearable and tap Start.
- Select your watch, confirm the matching number on both screens, and follow the setup prompts.
Depending on the model and software, Samsung warns that transferring can reset the watch and erase its data. Back up first on the old phone: Galaxy Wearable > Watch settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data. Screens may differ slightly by software version.

- Signature Rotating Bezel: Physical rotating bezel provides precise, tactile navigation through apps, menus, and notifications.
Last resorts: reset and service
If the watch still won’t sync, Samsung’s guidance is to back up the watch data, reset it, and reconnect. A reset returns the watch to its defaults and can cause data loss, so use the backup path above first and treat the reset as a final software step.
If the watch still won’t connect after a reset, or you suspect physical or water damage, contact Samsung. Its support site offers repair requests, a service-center lookup and support contact options. Try the same watch with a different compatible phone first. That test tells you whether the fault is in the watch or the original phone.
