A Galaxy phone that appears stuck after an update is usually in one of four states: the screen is frozen, the phone is repeatedly restarting, it is parked on the Samsung logo, or it will not respond at all. Start with the low-risk force restart: hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down together until the phone restarts; Samsung’s general US boot-loop guidance says to hold them for more than seven seconds. If the phone can reach a power menu, Safe Mode can identify a downloaded-app conflict. If a Mac or Windows computer running Smart Switch detects the phone and offers an update, you can try that update without disconnecting the cable. A phone that still cannot boot normally after an update failure needs Samsung service rather than unofficial firmware flashing.
The exact button timing, menu names and available recovery options vary by Galaxy model, software version, carrier and region. Use the relevant regional Samsung support page if your screen does not match these instructions.

First, identify what “stuck” means
Do not use the same remedy for every post-update problem. Watch the phone for a few seconds and classify the symptom before taking a destructive step.
| What you see | What it usually means for the next step | Data risk of the first step |
|---|---|---|
| Display is on but touch or buttons do not respond | Try a force restart. If it boots, check whether the problem returns. | Low; a force restart does not intentionally erase personal data. |
| Samsung logo appears, disappears and returns | This is a boot loop. Try a force restart, then Smart Switch only if a computer detects the phone and presents an update. | Low for a restart; Smart Switch must not be interrupted. |
| Samsung logo remains on screen | Try a force restart. If the device connects to Smart Switch and an Update button appears, follow that process. | Low for the restart; do not disconnect during an offered update. |
| Phone is completely dark and gives no response | Connect it to an approved charger, allow it to charge, then try the force restart. If there is still no normal boot, seek support. | Low, provided you do not reset the device. |
| Phone reaches the power menu but fails during normal startup | Use Safe Mode as a diagnostic test. A problem that continues in Safe Mode points away from a downloaded app. | Low; Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. |
| Update failed and the phone cannot boot normally | Stop repeated home remedies and arrange Samsung service for the documented reflash process. | Service may not preserve data; ask about recovery before authorizing work. |
A low or depleted battery can make a Galaxy look dead. Samsung includes charging with an approved charger in its general boot-loop guidance, but charging alone does not repair a failed system update. Do not assume that waiting a particular number of minutes will fix every phone.

1. Force-restart the Galaxy
Force restart is the correct first action for a frozen or unresponsive phone because it does not require the touchscreen or a working power menu.
- Press and hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down button at the same time.
- Keep both buttons held until the phone restarts. Samsung’s current general US boot-loop instructions say to hold them for more than seven seconds.
- If a power menu appears, continue holding the buttons instead of tapping Power off.
- Release the buttons when the Samsung logo or startup animation appears, then allow the phone to finish booting.
Button layouts and timing can differ on specific Galaxy models. If your model’s support page gives a different combination or duration, follow that model-specific instruction. Samsung’s general procedure is documented in Samsung Galaxy device will not start or is in a boot loop.
If Maintenance Boot Mode appears
Some Galaxy phones show a Maintenance Boot Mode screen after a button restart. Use the volume buttons to highlight Normal Boot, then press the Side/Power button to select it. Do not choose a reset option while you are still trying to preserve data.

What a successful restart tells you
If the phone reaches the lock screen and remains stable, unlock it and back up important photos, messages and files before doing anything more invasive. A single freeze may not return, but an update that repeatedly causes restarts deserves further diagnosis. If the phone returns to the logo, begins cycling through restarts, or freezes again, continue with the matching section below.
2. Use Safe Mode to check for a downloaded-app conflict
Safe Mode is useful only when the device can reach the power menu and complete enough of startup to offer the on-screen option. It is a diagnostic environment, not a repair for a damaged or incomplete system update. Safe Mode disables downloaded apps so you can see whether one of them is interfering with startup.
- Open the power menu on the Galaxy.
- Touch and hold the Power off icon until Safe mode appears.
- Tap Safe mode and let the phone restart. A Safe mode label should appear on the display.
- Use the phone briefly and check whether the freezing or restarting stops.
Samsung describes this method in its guidance for a frozen or slow screen at Galaxy phone or tablet’s screen is frozen or responds too slowly. The wording and location of the power controls can vary by software version.

If the problem disappears in Safe Mode
A downloaded app is a plausible cause. Open Settings, review apps installed or updated shortly before the problem began, and remove recent candidates one at a time. Restart normally after each removal and test the phone before removing another app. This gradual approach identifies the trigger while preserving apps that are not involved. Once the phone is stable, reinstall only a necessary app from its official store and check whether the symptom returns.

If the problem continues in Safe Mode
Because downloaded apps are disabled, persistence in Safe Mode makes an app conflict less likely. Do not keep uninstalling unrelated apps or jump directly to a factory reset. Move to Smart Switch if the computer connection requirements below are met; otherwise contact Samsung support.
3. Try Smart Switch only when it detects the phone and offers an update
Smart Switch can sometimes provide an update when a Galaxy is stuck at the logo or an update repeatedly fails to download. It is not a universal boot-loop recovery tool: the option depends on the device, software support and whether the computer can communicate with the phone.

What you need
- A Mac or Windows PC with Smart Switch installed.
- The supplied USB cable for the Galaxy, connected directly to the computer. If that cable is missing or faulty, use a replacement that matches the phone’s connector and explicitly supports data transfer; a charge-only cable cannot perform this procedure.
- Enough battery for the process, or a stable connection to power as appropriate for your model.
Smart Switch procedure
- Install and open Smart Switch on the Mac or Windows PC.
- Connect the Galaxy with the supplied, data-capable USB cable.
- Wait while Smart Switch detects the device. Keep the phone connected even if the display remains on the Samsung logo.
- If Smart Switch displays an Update option, select it and follow the prompts shown by the program.
- Do not unplug the USB cable, close Smart Switch, power off the computer, or use the phone while the update is running.
- Allow the Galaxy to reboot and finish the process. The restart can be part of a normal update sequence.
Samsung’s logo-screen instructions include the computer-based Smart Switch path and the warning not to disconnect during the update: Galaxy phone or tablet stuck at Samsung logo screen. Samsung also notes that Smart Switch may help when an update repeatedly fails to download in Software update failed on Samsung device.
When Smart Switch does not show Update
Do not force an update by downloading firmware from an unofficial website or by following generic flashing instructions. If Smart Switch only offers backup, shows no device, or presents no Update option, its supported recovery path is not available for this phone in its current state. Check the cable and USB connection once, then stop if the device still cannot be detected. Repeated reconnecting will not create an update option that the software does not support.

There is a clear boundary between troubleshooting a freeze and repairing a failed system installation. Samsung’s update-failure guidance states: If the device fails to boot normally after an update fails, service will be required to reflash the device.

Arrange service through Samsung support or an authorized service channel when the phone remains in a boot loop, stays at the logo, or cannot complete normal startup after the update failed—especially when Safe Mode is unavailable and Smart Switch does not offer Update. Tell the technician exactly what happened, including the update attempt, any error message, whether the phone was interrupted, and which button procedure you tried.
A reflash replaces or repairs system software; it is not a promise that photos, messages, authenticator data or other personal information will survive. Ask what data-preservation options exist before authorizing service. Avoid third-party firmware downloads, unknown “one-click” repair utilities and unofficial flashing guides, which can create additional software or warranty problems and are not Samsung’s documented path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Treat factory reset as a destructive last resort
A factory reset erases the phone’s personal information and returns it to an initial setup state. Samsung’s boot-loop troubleshooting includes a reset option but cautions that personal information may not be recoverable, so it belongs after the non-destructive steps—not before them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore considering a reset
- Try the force restart.
- Use Safe Mode if the phone can reach the power menu.
- Try Smart Switch only if it detects the phone and actually offers Update.
- Confirm that no needed photos, files, messages or account recovery codes exist only on the device.
- Check whether you know the Google and Samsung account credentials that may be requested after reset.
If the device cannot boot normally specifically because an update failed, a reset is not a substitute for Samsung’s stated service requirement. A reset can remove user data without correcting a system installation that needs professional reflashing. If you can reach the normal Settings menu and have made a verified backup, consult the device-specific Samsung instructions for the reset path rather than selecting a recovery option at random.
A decision path you can follow
- Screen frozen or no response: hold Side/Power and Volume Down for more than seven seconds, then release after restart.
- Phone appears dead: connect it to an approved charger, allow charging, and repeat the force restart.
- Phone boots normally: back up important data; if the issue returns, test Safe Mode and remove recent apps only if Safe Mode is stable.
- Phone loops or remains at the Samsung logo: connect it to a Mac or Windows PC running Smart Switch with the supplied data cable.
- Smart Switch offers Update: follow its prompts and do not disconnect until the process and reboot finish.
- Smart Switch cannot detect the phone or offers no Update: stop experimenting with firmware and contact Samsung support.
- Update failure leaves the phone unable to boot normally: arrange service for the documented reflash process; consider a factory reset only when Samsung’s instructions and your data situation make that choice appropriate.
Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Releasing the buttons too soon: a brief press may open the power menu instead of performing the force restart. Keep holding past the model’s required threshold; Samsung’s general US guidance is more than seven seconds.
- Interrupting Smart Switch: unplugging the cable or shutting down the computer during an update can leave the software process incomplete. Keep the connection intact until Smart Switch says it is finished and the phone has rebooted.
- Assuming Safe Mode repaired the update: Safe Mode only disables downloaded apps. It can expose an app conflict but cannot rebuild a failed system installation.
- Resetting before backing up: a factory reset can permanently remove personal information. Place it after the non-destructive checks.
- Using a charge-only or incompatible cable: Smart Switch requires a data connection and a connector that fits the Galaxy. Replace a faulty supplied cable only with a compatible data-capable one.
- Installing unofficial firmware: unsupported flashing can add risk without addressing the underlying failure. Samsung directs phones that fail to boot normally after an unsuccessful update to service.
- Assuming every Galaxy behaves identically: menu labels, button combinations and supported Smart Switch functions vary by model, software version, carrier and region.
What to tell Samsung support
Providing a precise history helps support choose the correct path. Note the Galaxy model, carrier and region; the software version if you know it; when the update started; whether it completed or displayed an error; whether the device is frozen, looping or logo-stuck; whether it reaches a power menu or Safe Mode; and whether Smart Switch detects it. Also mention whether the phone was connected to power and whether the cable was disconnected during the update. Do not claim that data will be preserved unless Samsung gives you that assurance for your specific service case.
Samsung’s support pages are written for US devices and explain that screens and options can vary. If you are elsewhere, open your country’s Samsung support site and select the exact Galaxy model before following a model-specific recovery instruction.
