A monitor arm that sinks, rises, tilts or wanders usually needs a different fix for each symptom. First secure the monitor, VESA plate and desk mount; confirm the display is within the arm’s rated load; then adjust the gas-spring tension only for vertical movement. A downward screen angle points to the separate tilt joint, while sideways drift usually calls for checking joints and fasteners. Use the exact model manual and included tool, make small changes while supporting the monitor, and contact the manufacturer if the arm remains unstable.
Identify what is actually moving
“Sagging” can describe several mechanical problems. Diagnosing the movement before turning an adjustment screw prevents you from correcting the wrong joint.

| Observed symptom | Most likely area | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| The entire monitor and arm slowly descend | Gas-spring balance, load rating or mounting security | Display weight, VESA connection, desk attachment and the arm’s vertical-tension control |
| The arm rises after you let go | Gas-spring tension set too high for the installed load | Use the arm’s “−” direction, following its manual |
| The arm stays at the right height but the screen nose-dives | Tilt joint friction or its fastener | Inspect and adjust the tilt mechanism, not the gas spring |
| The monitor wanders left, right or forward | Loose joint, set screw, clamp or grommet mount | Check fasteners and the desk attachment for movement |
| The whole assembly shakes when you type or touch it | Desk flex, loose connector, clamp or joint | Check the mounting surface and every accessible connector |
Vertical sinking and a downward viewing angle can occur together, but they are not the same fault. Treat them as separate adjustments and test each one independently.

The instructions below describe the common procedure for a gas-spring arm, but they are not a universal disassembly method. The manufacturer’s current manual takes precedence over any generic direction.
Check the monitor, VESA plate and desk mount
Confirm the actual load
Remove accessories that are not part of the arm’s supported load when calculating the weight, then compare the complete mounted display with the arm’s stated range. A screen that is too heavy can sink even after the tension screw is turned to its limit. An ultralight display on an arm set for a much heavier load can rise on its own.
Include the monitor itself and any items that remain attached to it, such as a heavy VESA adapter, webcam, speaker bar or other bracket. Use the arm maker’s definition of supported weight; some specifications assume the monitor alone, while others include the plate or accessories.

Inspect the VESA connection
Verify that the VESA plate is fully locked into the arm head and that all mounting screws are present and tightened to the model’s specification. The plate should sit flat against the monitor’s mounting area; a tilted or partially engaged plate can look like a spring problem.
Check that the screws are the correct length for the monitor. A screw that bottoms out before clamping the plate, or one that is too long, can leave the connection loose or damage the display. Do not substitute hardware unless the manual permits it.
Test the desk attachment
With the monitor supported, try to move the clamp or grommet mount by hand. The desk surface should not flex excessively, and the clamp should contact the underside squarely. A loose clamp can make an otherwise correctly balanced arm appear to drift or sag.

- Allen wrenches (aka hex keys) for tightening or loosening screws
- Includes 36 hex keys in SAE and metric sizes and with long and short arm lengths
- Made of durable chrome vanadium steel with a black oxide finish for rugged strength and rust resistance
- 2 hinged cases included, complete with dedicated slots for key storage and clear size markings for fast locating

For a grommet installation, verify that the bolt passes through the desk opening correctly and that the underside plate is flat. For a clamp, check the desk thickness range and make sure the clamp is not sitting on a cable tray, bevel or soft edge. Tighten only as specified; overtightening can damage the desk without curing movement.
Adjust a monitor that sinks or rises
Use this sequence only when the whole arm is moving vertically. Do not use the gas-spring control to correct a screen that merely tilts downward.
- Find the vertical-tension control. Look for the spring-adjustment bolt or screw on the arm segment identified in the manual. Some products place it near the elbow; others use a different location. Do not assume that a visible screw is the correct control.
- Put the arm in the position specified by the manual. Many designs are adjusted with the arm near its horizontal or middle position. Keep the monitor supported and prevent it from swinging while you work.
- Read the markings. The adjustment may be labeled “+” and “−,” or with another load-direction indicator. Rotation direction is not universal, so follow the arrows and wording for your exact model.
- Increase tension for a sinking display. Turn toward the “+” marking in small increments, using the included Allen key or specified tool. After each small change, let the arm settle and check whether it holds the desired height.
- Decrease tension for a display that rises. Turn toward the “−” marking in small increments. Stop as soon as the screen stays at the selected height instead of continuing to rotate the screw.
- Test the full travel. Move the arm through the normal range while supporting the monitor. It should remain controlled at the positions you use, without suddenly dropping or lifting.
Make one small adjustment at a time and note the starting position. Turning repeatedly without testing can take the arm past the balanced point, making it rise when it previously sank. If the manual specifies a number of turns, a tool, or a particular arm position, follow that instruction rather than estimating.
SIIG’s support knowledge base describes the sinking case as “Monitor arm droops and not staying in position” and tells owners to increase tension with the included Allen key toward the “+” side until the monitor stays at the desired height. That wording is specific to the applicable SIIG design; use it as an example of the process, not as a direction for every arm. See SIIG’s troubleshooting page.
ACT’s support article for the AC8310 likewise treats a monitor that lowers or rises after installation as a model-specific tension adjustment. The article was updated February 26, 2026; consult the current AC8310 instructions if that is your arm: ACT AC8310 support.
Fix a screen that tilts downward
If the arm holds its height but the panel gradually points toward the desk, the vertical spring can be correctly balanced. The problem is usually friction at the monitor-head tilt joint, an incorrectly tightened fastener, or a connection that is not fully seated.
- Support the monitor with one hand or a second person.
- Locate the tilt-joint adjustment described in the model manual; it is separate from the gas-spring tension control.
- Check that the monitor head, VESA plate and any locking interface are fully engaged.
- Adjust the tilt friction or fastener in small increments with the specified tool.
- Set the viewing angle, release the monitor gradually and verify that it stays there.
The ARCTIC X1-3D user manual treats tilt and rotation adjustment separately from gas-spring strength and instructs the user to support the monitor during adjustment. That separation is important: tightening the spring when only the angle is wrong can leave the arm’s vertical movement unbalanced.

Do not force a tilt screw past its stop. If the joint will not hold after the documented adjustment, stop rather than dismantling the monitor head; internal parts and service procedures vary by model.
Stop sideways drift and wobble
Sideways movement at an arm joint
With the monitor supported, check each accessible elbow and rotating joint for a loose set screw or fastener. Tighten only the hardware identified in the manual, and use small increments so you do not bind the joint or damage its threads.
Movement at the clamp or grommet
Watch the mount while gently moving the arm. If the clamp shifts against the desk or the grommet bolt turns, secure the attachment according to the maker’s instructions. A mount that moves at the desk cannot be stabilized by changing gas-spring tension.
Wobble caused by the work surface
A thin or flexible desk can transmit typing and touch vibrations even when every arm fastener is tight. Check the desk’s stiffness, the clamp’s contact area and the condition of any supplied reinforcement plate. Fellowes recommends checking connectors and fasteners when investigating a shaking arm; its guidance is at the Fellowes installation and adjustment page.
HUANUO’s support FAQ discusses model-specific checks for drift, including joints and set screws. Use the instructions for your particular arm rather than copying a screw location or tightening direction from another model: HUANUO frequently asked questions.
Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Adjusting the spring for a tilt problem: A gas spring controls vertical balance, not the viewing angle at the monitor head.
- Guessing the turn direction: “Clockwise tightens” is not a safe universal rule. Use the plus and minus marks and the exact manual.
- Testing without support: A partially adjusted arm can move abruptly when the load shifts. Keep the panel supported throughout the adjustment.
- Ignoring the load range: Turning the screw harder cannot make an arm suitable for a display outside its rated weight or size.
- Copying another model’s screw location: Even arms from the same brand can place controls and use different key sizes differently.
- Changing several fasteners at once: One change at a time makes it possible to identify the failed joint and return to the original setting.
- Continuing after visible damage: A cracked joint, bent clamp, stripped screw or unstable desk attachment requires service advice, not more tension.
Use the correct manual, not a guessed adjustment direction
| Source | What it establishes | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| SIIG Knowledge Base & Troubleshooting | A drooping arm may need more tension; its example uses the included Allen key and the “+” direction. | Apply only to the matching SIIG model and markings. |
| HUANUO FAQ | Model-specific guidance covers drift, joints, set screws and adjustment behavior. | Identify the exact arm before using its directions. |
| ARCTIC X1-3D manual | Tilt and rotation are adjusted separately from gas-spring strength, with the monitor supported. | Use the tilt procedure when the panel angle changes but height does not. |
| Fellowes installation advice | Screen size, weight, connectors and fasteners are installation checks. | Use these checks before changing spring balance. |
| ACT AC8310 support | The AC8310 article, updated February 26, 2026, addresses a monitor that lowers or rises after installation. | Follow the current AC8310 instructions if that is your model. |
These sources do not establish one universal screw location, Allen-key size or rotation direction. If your manual’s markings conflict with a generic diagram, the model manual wins.
What to do when adjustment does not solve the problem
After checking load, VESA engagement, desk attachment and the appropriate joint, stop if the arm still drops, rises, tilts or drifts. SIIG directs owners to contact support when an arm continues to droop after tension has been increased. Manufacturer support can determine whether the spring, a joint or the complete arm is serviceable.

- 【NOTE】In this hex wrench set, only some large-size wrenches are equipped with magnetic adsorption functionality; small-size wrenches do not support it due to structural limitations. To balance user experience and magnetic convenience, large-size models feature a weak magnetic design. The magnetism will gradually diminish after prolonged use, which is a normal phenomenon and does not affect the wrench's primary function.

- Record the arm’s exact model and revision, the monitor’s weight and the symptom.
- Describe which adjustment you made, how far, and whether the behavior changed.
- Photograph the VESA connection, desk mount and any damaged or loose hardware.
- Ask whether the gas spring or joint is user-serviceable and which replacement parts are approved.
Do not assume that a gas spring can be replaced safely by the owner. The reviewed manufacturer material provides model-level adjustment advice, not a universal gas-spring replacement procedure. A pressurized or incorrectly matched replacement can make the arm unsafe.
If support asks you to return the arm, restore the monitor to a safe supported position and follow its packing instructions. Do not ship a loose monitor attached to an arm unless the maker specifically tells you to do so.
When replacing the arm is the sensible option
Replacement becomes reasonable when the display is outside the arm’s rated range, the mount is damaged, the desk attachment cannot be made secure, or the maker confirms that the failed component is not serviceable. Before choosing another arm, compare the following requirements rather than buying by appearance alone:
| Requirement | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Display load | What is the monitor’s complete mounted weight, and does it fall inside the new arm’s stated range? | Gas-spring balance depends on the actual load. |
| VESA compatibility | Does the plate support the monitor’s hole pattern and screw size? | An incompatible or partially engaged plate can be unstable. |
| Desk attachment | Will the clamp or grommet fit the desk thickness and available space? | A sound arm cannot compensate for an unsuitable attachment. |
| Adjustment design | Are vertical tension, tilt friction and rotation adjusted independently? | Separate controls make diagnosis and setup clearer. |
| Support and parts | Does the manufacturer document service, replacement joints or springs? | Published support reduces the risk of improvised repairs. |
No particular replacement model is required to solve every case. Match these specifications to your monitor and desk, and retain the manual for future tension changes. Compare the total cost of a compatible replacement with the maker’s service or parts option, but do not choose a cheaper arm that lacks the required load range, VESA fit or secure desk attachment.
A quick decision path
- Height changes? Check the load, VESA plate and desk mount, then adjust vertical spring tension in the marked direction.
- Only the angle changes? Leave the gas spring alone and inspect the tilt joint.
- The arm wanders sideways? Inspect set screws, joints, clamp and grommet.
- It shakes at the desk? Check connectors, fasteners and desk stiffness.
- Still unstable or visibly damaged? Stop using it and contact the manufacturer before attempting parts replacement.
Make one change at a time and retest. That preserves the distinction between a spring-balance problem, a tilt-joint problem and a mounting problem, so you know which correction actually worked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my monitor arm keep sinking?
The display may be heavier than the arm’s rated range, the VESA plate or desk mount may be loose, or the gas-spring tension may be too low. Confirm the complete mounted weight and connections first, then increase tension gradually toward the model’s marked “+” direction while supporting the monitor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy does my monitor arm rise instead of sag?
The spring is producing more lift than the installed display requires. After checking that the monitor is securely mounted and within the arm’s range, reduce tension in the model’s marked “−” direction in small increments.

The monitor stays at the right height but tilts down. What should I adjust?
Inspect the monitor-head tilt joint, not the vertical gas spring. Support the screen, check that the VESA plate is fully seated, and use the manual’s tilt-friction or fastener adjustment.
Is clockwise always the direction to tighten a monitor arm?
No. Adjustment direction, screw location and Allen-key size vary by product. Follow the plus/minus markings and the exact manual instead of assuming a universal rotation direction.
Can I use any Allen key or replacement gas spring?
Use the tool supplied with the arm or the size specified for that model. Do not assume a gas spring is owner-replaceable; ask the manufacturer which parts and service procedures are approved.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the arm drift sideways or wobble when I type?
A loose set screw, elbow, connector, clamp or grommet can allow drift. A flexible desk can also transmit vibration. With the monitor supported, inspect accessible fasteners and the desk attachment according to the manual.
What if tension adjustment does not fix the sagging?
Stop turning the screw once you have made the documented adjustment. Recheck the load and mounting points, then contact the manufacturer with the model, monitor weight, symptom and adjustments already attempted.
When should I replace the monitor arm?
Consider replacement when the display is outside the rated range, the clamp or joint is damaged, the desk attachment cannot be secured, or the manufacturer confirms that the failed component is not serviceable. Match weight, VESA pattern, desk fit, adjustment design and available support.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the movement before adjusting anything: vertical sinking or rising calls for model-specific gas-spring tension, a downward screen angle points to the separate tilt joint, and sideways drift usually starts at the joints or desk mount. Support the monitor, stay within the published load limits, use the included tool and markings, make small changes, and stop for manufacturer help if the arm remains unstable or damaged.
