Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFirst find out whether the problem is the Roku’s link to your router, the router’s internet connection, weak Wi-Fi, or a single app or title. On the Roku, run Settings > Network > Check connection; then test another device on the same Wi-Fi. Those checks point you toward the right fix before you reset anything or buy new equipment.
Find out where the connection is failing
A Roku can connect to your Wi-Fi router but still fail to reach the internet. The Roku connection test checks both, so “connected to Wi-Fi” does not necessarily mean streaming should work.

- Connect a phone, tablet, or computer to the same Wi-Fi network as the Roku and try opening a public website.
- On the Roku, press Home and open Settings > Network > Check connection.
- For the most recent network details, open Settings > Network > About.
If other devices also cannot get online, check with your internet provider about an outage or service problem. If they work but the Roku test fails, focus on the Roku’s network connection and Wi-Fi signal.

Roku describes Poor as very weak, with frequent buffering or disconnections likely; Fair may cause pauses or drops in video quality. Restart the Roku and network equipment
A restart can clear a temporary connection problem. Use the Roku menu where available, or unplug the device. Roku’s basic Wi-Fi instructions say to unplug the router and modem, wait about 10 seconds, reconnect them, and allow the network equipment to restart. Its advanced full-restart procedure uses about 15 seconds unplugged, then powers on the modem first, router second, and Roku last. Follow the procedure for your setup; an ISP gateway may combine modem and router.
- Roku restart: Settings > System > Power > System Restart, when that option is available. Otherwise, unplug the Roku and reconnect it.
- Router/modem restart: use the sequence in Roku’s basic Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.
- Full restart: use Roku’s advanced troubleshooting guide for the device and network sequence.
Check the network name and password
When reconnecting, make sure the Roku is joining the intended Wi-Fi network and that its password is correct. Roku associates password errors with codes 14.40, 14.41, 14, and 014, but codes can overlap with other symptoms; use the on-screen message and Roku’s current instructions rather than diagnosing from a code alone.

Improve Wi-Fi signal and reduce congestion
If the connection test reports a weak signal or the Roku drops Wi-Fi, improve the wireless path before changing router settings or buying equipment. Roku’s support guidance says buffering, dropped Wi-Fi, or a weak-signal message is usually a problem with the wireless connection between the device and router.
Recommended Free Tools
- Move the router or Roku closer together if practical, and reduce walls, cabinets, or large furniture between them.
- Avoid enclosing the router in a cabinet or placing it near potential sources of wireless interference such as cordless phones, microwaves, and baby monitors.
- Pause large downloads and other streams while testing, since competing internet use can contribute to playback pauses.
- If you have a Streaming Stick positioned behind a television, Roku suggests an HDMI extender to move it away from the TV. This is a product-specific suggestion, not a Wi-Fi fix for a Roku TV or a Streaming Stick+.
After changing placement or reducing network use, run Settings > Network > Check connection again. Roku’s connection guidance includes signal improvement steps.

Try another Wi-Fi band, channel, or a wired connection
These options depend on the capabilities of the exact Roku model and router. Check model documentation before changing router settings or buying a cable.
5 GHz Wi-Fi
If both the Roku and router support 5 GHz Wi-Fi, try connecting to that band. Roku says current streaming devices support non-DFS 5 GHz channels 36–48 and 149–165; support for DFS channels 50–64 and 100–144 depends on the model. If the 5 GHz network does not appear, check the router’s selected channel and consult the model-specific compatibility list in Roku’s advanced networking guide.

Router channel selection
Manually changing a channel is an advanced step, not a first fix. Roku says a Wi-Fi analyzer app can help identify a less congested channel. Its North American guidance identifies channels 1, 6, and 11 as preferred choices for 2.4 GHz equipment; that regional guidance should not be treated as universal router advice.

If your particular Roku TV has an Ethernet port and can connect to the router, test a wired connection. Roku describes Ethernet as more stable than Wi-Fi. Verify the port and compatibility for your exact TV before buying an Ethernet cable; not every Roku TV or player has one.

Check whether buffering is limited to one app or title
If the Roku connection test succeeds, try another show or movie in the same service. If other titles play normally but one title or app continues to fail, the issue may be with that content or service rather than the Wi-Fi link. Roku recommends checking network status and reducing the number of devices using the internet; for a problem that remains specific to an app, contact that app’s customer support. See Roku’s playback troubleshooting guidance.
Use streaming speed figures as context, not a diagnosis
Roku’s published guidance gives general minimum internet speeds of 3 Mbps for Standard Definition, 5 Mbps for High Definition, and 25 Mbps or more for 4K Ultra HD streaming. These are Roku’s general figures, not independent measurements or a guarantee that a particular app or stream will work; streaming services may set their own requirements. A speed figure also does not tell you whether the Roku has a weak Wi-Fi signal or whether the internet provider is having an outage. Check Roku’s network and playback guidance for context.
Factory-reset only after the simpler fixes
A factory reset erases settings and requires apps to be set up again. Try restarting the Roku and network equipment, improving signal, reconnecting to Wi-Fi, and testing another network before resetting. Roku places factory reset at the end of its advanced troubleshooting guidance; menu wording can vary by Roku OS and device. Follow the instructions for your model in Roku’s advanced guide.
