The message “A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing” often does not mean your computer has a bad optical drive. When Windows 7 Setup was started from a USB stick, Setup may have lost access to that stick because Windows 7 installation media has no built-in USB 3 controller driver. Move the installer to a genuine USB 2 port first. If the computer has no usable USB 2 port, add the correct USB 3 driver to both boot.wim and the appropriate install.wim image with DISM. If the destination disk is NVMe, add the separate NVMe updates and storage-controller driver as well.
What the error means
Windows Setup can display this prompt even when no DVD drive is being used. Microsoft documents the wording as an installation-media error:

“A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.”
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
During a USB installation, the installer initially boots successfully from the flash drive. Setup then switches to a Windows PE environment that may not contain a driver for the computer’s USB 3 controller. Once that hand-off occurs, the flash drive disappears and Setup describes the missing access as a CD/DVD driver. The practical problem is usually USB-controller support, not an optical-drive failure.

There are two separate storage paths to distinguish:
- Installer access: USB 2 or USB 3 support is needed so Setup can continue reading the flash drive.
- Destination-disk access: SATA disks are normally visible with the included drivers, while an NVMe disk may require additional Windows 7 updates and a controller driver.
Fix the installer-access problem first. A working USB port does not prove that Setup has the right driver for it.
Check these details before changing the installation media
- Confirm that you booted Windows 7 Setup from a USB flash drive and that the prompt appeared after Install now, rather than while booting from an actual DVD.
- Write down the exact laptop model or motherboard model and revision.
- Identify the chipset generation and whether the ports are USB 2, USB 3, or both. A black insert often indicates USB 2, but color is not a guarantee.
- Record whether the target disk is SATA or NVMe and which storage-controller mode the firmware uses.
- Confirm whether your media is Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit, and whether it is RTM or Service Pack 1. Drivers and update packages must match the architecture.
- Use drivers from the computer or motherboard manufacturer, or from the Microsoft Update Catalog for that exact hardware. A driver for a similar model can leave Setup unable to see the port or disk.
- Make a copy of the original ISO and USB contents before modifying any WIM file.
Try a USB 2 connection first
This is the quickest and least invasive fix. Microsoft Q&A guidance recommends moving the installer to a USB 2 port because Windows 7 media does not include USB 3 drivers.
- Shut the computer down completely.
- Insert the Windows 7 installer into a physical USB 2 port. On many desktop systems this is a rear-panel port connected directly to the motherboard; on laptops it may be the older port with a black insert.
- If you created the installer on a USB 3 flash drive, try a USB 2.0 flash drive instead. It must be large enough for the Windows image and should be freshly formatted when you recreate the media.
- Enter the one-time boot menu or firmware setup and select the USB installer again.
- Start Setup and test whether the disk-selection screen now appears. If it does, continue the installation normally.
Front-panel ports, hubs, docking stations and adapters can introduce another controller, so connect the stick directly to a motherboard port while troubleshooting. If every port is USB 3, proceed to the firmware check and driver-injection method below.

Enable USB 2 compatibility in firmware
Some motherboards expose a compatibility mode that makes a USB 3 controller behave as an EHCI (USB 2) controller while an older operating system is running. The exact menu names differ by manufacturer.
- Restart and open firmware setup using the key shown on screen, commonly
Delete,F2,F10orEsc. - Inspect Advanced, USB Configuration, Integrated Peripherals or a similarly named menu.
- Look for settings such as Legacy USB, USB 2.0 compatibility, EHCI, xHCI mode or USB 3 mode.
- If the firmware offers a choice between xHCI/USB 3 and EHCI/USB 2, select the USB 2 or legacy-compatible setting temporarily. If it offers Auto, try Enabled for Legacy USB support.
- Save changes, boot from the installer and test Setup again.
Do not change unrelated storage settings. Switching SATA mode after Windows has been installed can make an existing installation unbootable; this firmware test is intended only to expose USB 2 compatibility during Setup. Restore the original USB setting after installation if your normal operating system needs xHCI performance.
When USB 2 is unavailable: prepare the exact driver
If the machine has USB 3-only ports or firmware provides no compatibility mode, customize the installation images. Download the USB 3 controller driver for the exact chipset and Windows 7 architecture. The extracted package must contain one or more .inf files; a setup program designed to run inside Windows is not sufficient for offline injection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep the driver folder simple, such as C:DriversUSB3. Do not mix drivers from several chipsets unless the manufacturer specifically supplies them as one package. Mismatched drivers can be accepted by DISM yet fail to operate the controller in Setup.

Inject USB 3 support with DISM
The following procedure assumes a working Windows computer, an administrator Command Prompt, the original Windows 7 files copied to a writable folder, and a separate empty mount directory. Replace the example drive letters and paths with your own.
1. Copy and inspect the media
- Copy the entire ISO or USB contents to
C:Win7Source. Keep the original USB unchanged until the modified images have been tested. - Create mount directories:
mkdir C:Win7MountBoot
mkdir C:Win7MountInstall
- Open Command Prompt (Admin) and inspect the editions contained in the installation image:
dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:C:Win7Sourcesourcesinstall.wim
Note the index for the edition you intend to install. An image can contain several indexes, such as Starter, Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate. Inject the driver into the index that Setup will use, not an arbitrary index.
2. Add the USB 3 driver to boot.wim
Windows Setup normally uses index 2 of boot.wim. Mount it with:
dism /Mount-Wim /WimFile:C:Win7Sourcesourcesboot.wim /index:2 /MountDir:C:Win7MountBoot
Add the extracted driver recursively so DISM can find all matching INF files:

dism /Image:C:Win7MountBoot /Add-Driver /Driver:C:DriversUSB3 /Recurse
Commit the changes and unmount the image:
dism /Unmount-Wim /MountDir:C:Win7MountBoot /Commit
If DISM reports that files are in use, close Explorer windows and other tools that may be reading the mount directory, then retry the unmount. Do not copy a partially mounted WIM back to the installer.
3. Add the driver to the selected install.wim index
Mount the index you identified with /Get-WimInfo:
dism /Mount-Wim /WimFile:C:Win7Sourcesourcesinstall.wim /index:3 /MountDir:C:Win7MountInstall
Replace 3 with your edition’s actual index. Add the same chipset driver:
dism /Image:C:Win7MountInstall /Add-Driver /Driver:C:DriversUSB3 /Recurse
Commit and unmount:
dism /Unmount-Wim /MountDir:C:Win7MountInstall /Commit
If your media has several editions and you want every edition to work, repeat the mount, add-driver and commit sequence for each required index. Otherwise, selecting an unmodified edition in Setup can reproduce the original failure.

For a USB-based source, copy the modified sourcesboot.wim and sourcesinstall.wim from C:Win7Source back to the installer, replacing the old files. Ensure the copy finishes successfully; install.wim can be several gigabytes. If you are rebuilding an ISO, use a bootable-media tool that preserves the Windows 7 boot sector and BIOS compatibility. Test the resulting USB on the target computer rather than assuming that a successful copy proves it is bootable.

NVMe requires a separate fix
USB support and NVMe support are different problems. WOSHUB notes that Windows 7 RTM does not support USB 3.0 and NVMe controllers out of the box, and that Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 distributions do not contain PCIe/NVMe drivers. Therefore, a machine can read the installer after USB 3 integration and still show no disk at the partition screen.
For an NVMe target, obtain the Microsoft packages KB2990941-v3 and KB3087873-v2 for the correct architecture, along with the storage-controller driver supplied for the platform. Integrate the updates and controller driver into the boot and installation images in the same offline-servicing process: mount the relevant boot.wim index and Windows edition index, use DISM’s /Add-Package for the update packages, use /Add-Driver for the controller INF files, then commit and replace the WIM files on the installer.
Do not treat an invisible NVMe disk as proof that USB injection failed. Check each layer independently: press Shift+F10 at Setup to open Command Prompt, run diskpart, then list disk. If the USB installer is readable but the NVMe disk is absent, the remaining issue is storage-controller support or firmware configuration.
Choose the least invasive method
| Situation | Best first action | Work involved | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A real USB 2 port is available | Move the installer to that port | Minimal; no image editing | The port must be connected to a usable USB 2 controller, not merely a USB 3 port with a different color. |
| Firmware offers EHCI, Legacy USB or USB 2 compatibility | Enable the compatibility option temporarily | Low; change and later restore one firmware setting | Some systems expose no such setting, and labels vary. |
| USB 3-only system, exact chipset driver available | Inject the driver into boot.wim index 2 and the selected install.wim index |
Moderate; requires DISM, matching INF files and a rebuilt USB | A driver for another chipset or architecture may not work. |
| Target disk is NVMe | Add KB2990941-v3, KB3087873-v2 and the correct storage driver in addition to USB support | Highest; two compatibility layers must be serviced | USB access can be fixed while the NVMe disk remains invisible. |
| OEM does not support Windows 7 for the model | Verify hardware support before further customization | Compatibility checking | Newer systems may lack workable Windows 7 drivers even after media modification. |
Troubleshoot failures after driver injection
Setup still shows the same CD/DVD prompt
- Verify that the modified
boot.wimis index 2. Injecting only index 1 does not modify the Windows Setup environment normally used after boot. - Check that the driver folder contains INF files for the exact USB controller and Windows 7 architecture.
- Confirm that you replaced the WIM files on the USB stick, not only the copies on the editing computer.
- Try a different motherboard USB port with the customized media; hubs and front-panel connectors can use a different controller.
- Recheck firmware USB mode. A setting that forces xHCI may override the compatibility path you intended to use.
The disk-selection page appears, but no target disk is listed
- Use
Shift+F10, thendiskpartandlist diskto determine whether Setup can see any storage device. - If the target is NVMe, add the two Microsoft updates and the platform’s storage-controller driver; USB 3 integration alone cannot make an NVMe disk appear.
- Check the firmware storage mode and confirm that the disk is detected there. A disk absent from firmware is a hardware, connection or firmware problem rather than a Windows driver problem.
- Be careful with
clean, convertand partition commands in DiskPart. They can destroy existing data.
DISM reports an error while mounting or committing
- Run Command Prompt as administrator and use a writable local NTFS folder for the source and mount directories.
- Make sure the WIM is not marked read-only and that there is sufficient free space for temporary files.
- Unmount abandoned sessions with
dism /Get-MountedWimInfoand, if appropriate, dism /Unmount-Wim /MountDir:C:Win7MountBoot /Discardbefore starting again. - Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit drivers, and do not add a vendor installer executable in place of an INF-based driver.
When to stop
Windows 7 installation media cannot supply drivers that the hardware manufacturer never created. Microsoft Q&A guidance advises confirming that the laptop manufacturer supports Windows 7 and provides drivers for the exact model. On newer computers, USB 3, NVMe, graphics, networking and chipset support may be incomplete even after you customize the installer. If the OEM lists no Windows 7 drivers for the model, repeated WIM edits are unlikely to produce a stable installation; use supported hardware or an operating system with drivers for that platform.
Keep the original media, the exact driver versions and a record of each WIM index you modified. That makes it possible to recreate the installer if you change editions or replace the target disk.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide backup, restore and scheduled scans.
