How to Fix a RangeError in JavaScript

A JavaScript RangeError has no universal fix. Find the operation in the stack trace, inspect its input, and apply the API’s specific range rules.

There is no single fix for a JavaScript RangeError. It means an operation received a value outside the range it accepts. Read the complete error message and stack trace, find the call that supplied the value, then validate or correct that value using the operation’s specific rules.

Find the operation that rejected the value

  1. Read the full message and stack trace. The message may name the API or argument; the stack trace points toward the line that called it.
  2. Inspect the value at that call. Check the value immediately before the failing operation, including any conversion or calculation that produced it. Pay particular attention to values derived from user input or external data.
  3. Apply that operation’s constraints. Validate before calling the API and choose an explicit response for invalid input. Catching and suppressing the exception, or raising a limit without confirming the requested value is valid, can conceal the bug.
  4. Reproduce and test the boundary. Keep a failing input and a valid boundary input as test cases; retain a regression test when appropriate.

RangeError is a category of error, not a diagnosis by itself. MDN documents multiple RangeError cases, so the examples below cover common message families rather than every possible cause: MDN JavaScript error reference.

Fix “RangeError: invalid array length”

Check array construction, changes to an array’s length, and code that grows arrays, including push() and concat(). A requested array length cannot be negative, fractional, or greater than the supported maximum. MDN documents the Array maximum as 232−1; ArrayBuffer allocation limits differ by platform and engine, so do not assume the same limit applies to both. See MDN’s invalid array length reference.

Check what the code means to construct

new Array(value) treats a single numeric argument as the requested array length. If the intention is to create an array containing that number as an element, use an array literal instead:

const oneItem = [value];

For a data-derived size, validate that it is a permitted integer and bound it to a limit appropriate for the application before allocating. Do not simply clamp every invalid value: rejecting it or reporting a useful validation error may be safer than silently changing the requested size.

Fix “RangeError: precision is out of range”

Inspect the digits argument passed to toExponential() or toFixed(), or the precision argument passed to toPrecision(). The accepted ranges are operation-specific:

Method Accepted argument
toExponential(digits) Integer from 0 through 100, inclusive
toFixed(digits) Integer from 0 through 100, inclusive
toPrecision(precision) Integer from 1 through 100, inclusive

These are the documented bounds for the methods; see MDN’s precision range reference. If the argument comes from input or a calculation, validate it before formatting and decide whether invalid values should be rejected or handled with a deliberate default.

Fix “RangeError: radix must be an integer”

Check the optional radix passed to Number.prototype.toString() or BigInt.prototype.toString(). It must be an integer from 2 through 36, inclusive. Validate a computed or user-selected radix before calling toString(radix). Details: MDN’s bad radix reference.

Fix “Maximum call stack size exceeded” or “too much recursion”

Look at repeated function frames in the stack trace and check whether recursive calls reach a base case and make progress toward it. Correct the stopping condition if they do not. When input can be very deep, consider an iterative approach or place a suitable bound on the input depth.

Browsers do not use identical error names: Chrome and Safari may report a RangeError, while Firefox reports InternalError: too much recursion for this condition. There is no portable numeric recursion-depth threshold to copy between runtimes. See MDN’s recursion reference.

When the message does not match these examples

Use the exact error text and the operation named near the top of the stack to identify the relevant API constraint. Array size, formatting precision, radix, and recursive depth are distinct cases; a fix for one does not apply to the others. MDN’s error reference includes additional RangeError situations. Check the documentation for the specific operation before changing input values or limits.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
