How to Fix a PS5 That Won’t Turn On or Wake From Rest Mode

A PS5 that appears dead may simply be in Rest Mode, while a blue or blinking-white light points to a startup error. Check the indicator first: solid orange means Rest Mode, no light means powered off, blue that never becomes solid white or blinking white indicates an error, and solid white with no picture usually means the console is on but the display connection needs attention.

Use the least-destructive fix that matches the symptom. Wake Rest Mode with the PS button or the console’s power button, check power and cables, perform Sony’s correct power cycle, and use Safe Mode only when the console can reach it. Never unplug the AC cable while the indicator is lit or blinking.

The order matters. A controller that is not paired, a television on the wrong input, and a console frozen during startup can all look like the same failure from the sofa. Identifying the light and whether Safe Mode appears prevents unnecessary resets, purchases, and data loss.

Start with the PS5’s indicator light

The light tells you whether the console is waiting for a wake signal, fully off, or stuck during startup. Watch the indicator for several seconds before pressing buttons or removing power.

Indicator state What it means First action
Solid orange Rest Mode, a low-power state that can charge controllers and download or install content Press the PS button on a USB-connected or previously paired controller
No light The console is powered off Press the PS button on a paired controller or press the console’s power button
Blue that does not become solid white Startup error or frozen state Use Sony’s three-minute power-cycle procedure
Blinking white Startup error or frozen state Use Sony’s three-minute power-cycle procedure
Solid white but no image The PS5 is powered on, but the display signal may not be reaching the screen Check HDMI and display troubleshooting before treating it as a no-power fault

These states are more useful than the broad description “it won’t turn on.” A console in Rest Mode needs a wake command; a console with a persistent blue or blinking-white light needs a controlled restart; a solid-white console with a blank screen may not have a power problem at all.

Wake a console in Rest Mode

  1. Confirm that the indicator is solid orange.
  2. Press the PS button on a controller connected by USB, or on a controller that was previously paired with the console.
  3. If the controller does not wake the PS5, press the console’s power button once.

Give the console a moment to switch from orange to white. Do not pull the AC cable simply because the screen does not appear immediately. A controller that has only been paired with another PS5, or one whose battery is empty, may not provide the expected wake signal; use a USB connection and the console button to separate a controller problem from a console problem.

Turn on a console with no light

No light means the PS5 is off rather than in Rest Mode. Press the PS button on a paired controller, or press the physical power button. If there is still no response, continue with the external power and cable checks below. Do not assume that “no light” identifies a failed power supply: it only confirms that the indicator is not currently lit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect your data before disconnecting power

Do not disconnect AC power while the indicator is lit or blinking. Sony warns that removing power in that state can cause data loss, data corruption, or console damage. Wait until the indicator is completely off before unplugging the console.

This rule matters during Rest Mode as well as normal play. Rest Mode can be downloading or installing content, so an orange light is not an invitation to remove the cable. If the PS5 is frozen, use the appropriate button-hold sequence and power-cycle instructions rather than repeatedly pulling the cord.

If you have already unplugged the console while it was lit, reconnect it and allow it to complete its startup checks. Do not respond to one failed boot by immediately repeating an unsafe disconnection. Record what the light does after reconnection; that observation determines whether the three-minute procedure, Safe Mode, or service is appropriate.

Check the external power, USB and HDMI connections

Before opening the console or assuming an internal component has failed, check the connections you can safely reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Make sure the AC cable is firmly seated in the PS5 and in the wall outlet.
  • Test the outlet with an ordinary, safe method, such as another working appliance.
  • Inspect the cable and connectors for obvious damage. Do not use a damaged cable.
  • If you are troubleshooting Safe Mode access, test a different USB cable, HDMI cable, and power cable one at a time. Changing one item at a time makes the result identifiable.
  • For a blank screen with a solid-white indicator, concentrate on the HDMI path and the display input before assuming the PS5 is off.
  • Remove unnecessary intermediaries while testing, such as an unneeded switch or receiver, so the direct console-to-display path is clear.

Sony’s Safe Mode guidance specifically recommends trying another USB, HDMI, or power cable when Safe Mode does not launch. A replacement AC cable is therefore a diagnostic option when the existing one is suspect, not a guaranteed repair. Confirm the exact PS5 model’s connector and your region’s electrical requirements before buying one. There is no universal cable specification or guaranteed result established by the troubleshooting guidance, so avoid treating a generic listing as automatically compatible.

Change only one item, then repeat the same startup attempt. If replacing the HDMI cable changes a blank screen to a Safe Mode menu, the display path was involved; if changing it has no effect on a console with no light, continue with power checks instead of buying additional video accessories.

Use the correct power-cycle procedure

Sony describes two different waiting periods. Use three minutes for a persistent blue or blinking-white indicator. Use 20 minutes when Safe Mode itself will not launch. They address different conditions and should not be substituted for one another.

For a blue light that stays blue or a blinking-white light

  1. Wait until you have identified the console as being in the blue-stuck or blinking-white state.
  2. Unplug the console from AC power only after following the safe shutdown guidance and confirming the indicator is no longer active.
  3. Leave it disconnected for three minutes.
  4. Reconnect the power cable.
  5. Turn the PS5 on with the console’s power button or a paired controller.

If the same indicator problem returns, Sony’s next supported path is to reinstall the system software through Safe Mode. Reinstallation is a data-destructive operation, so read the Safe Mode data warnings before proceeding. A single successful restart does not prove the underlying issue is resolved; watch the indicator through a complete boot and note whether the problem returns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Safe Mode that will not launch

  1. Hold the power button until the console beeps and shuts down.
  2. Remove the power cable and leave the PS5 disconnected for 20 minutes.
  3. Reconnect the cable.
  4. Try to enter Safe Mode again.

While diagnosing this condition, also test another USB, HDMI, or power cable. HDMI matters because Safe Mode may be running even when no picture reaches the television or monitor. If the screen is blank, do not keep holding the power button indefinitely; follow the two-beep sequence below and use the indicator and cable tests to determine what happened.

Enter Safe Mode without erasing the console

Safe Mode is Sony’s recovery environment for startup, storage, software, and display problems. It is not the same as simply turning the PS5 on, and the controller must be connected by USB for the recovery menu.

  1. Turn the console off. If it is running, hold the power button for three seconds.
  2. After it is off, press and hold the power button again.
  3. Keep holding until you hear the second beep. Sony says the second beep occurs about seven seconds after the first.
  4. Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
  5. Press the controller’s PS button.

Use a cable that carries data as well as power when possible; a cable that only charges may not let the console recognize the controller in Safe Mode. If the screen remains blank, try another HDMI cable or display input while repeating the sequence. A failure to see the menu is not proof that the PS5 never entered Safe Mode.

Once the menu appears, read each option’s confirmation text before selecting it. Safe Mode is a set of separate tools, not one single repair command. Some options change video output or update software, while others affect storage or erase the console.

Choose the least destructive Safe Mode option

For a console that starts but reports storage or startup trouble, Repair Console Storage is the non-erasing option identified in Sony’s guidance. It is the appropriate first choice when it is available and your goal is to repair storage without deleting user data.

Other Safe Mode choices can update software or change video output. Read the confirmation screen for every option; do not assume that a menu item is harmless because it appears alongside repair tools. If the console reaches the menu but the problem is only a missing picture, a video-output adjustment may be more appropriate than a reset.

Understand the data risk of reset and reinstall choices

Safe Mode action Data consequence When to consider it
Repair Console Storage Does not erase user data Storage-related startup trouble when the option is available
Reset PS5 Deletes user data Only after less-destructive steps fail and you have accepted the loss
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) Deletes user data and removes the system software for reinstallation A last-resort software recovery when Sony’s procedure calls for a reinstall

Back up data whenever the console can still start and you have a supported way to do so. Do not present a factory reset or system-software reinstall as a routine first step for a Rest Mode wake problem. Game saves, captures, settings, and installed content should be treated as unavailable after an erase unless you have already preserved them through a supported backup or synchronization method.

Reinstall PS5 system software only when necessary

If the blue or blinking-white problem persists and Sony’s recovery path calls for reinstallation, use only Sony’s official system-software files and instructions. Do not use third-party firmware and do not interrupt the installation once it begins.

Prepare the USB drive

  • Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
  • Create the folder structure PS5/UPDATE on the drive, using those names exactly.
  • Place Sony’s specifically labeled reinstallation file in the UPDATE folder.

Connect the drive to the PS5, enter Safe Mode, and select the reinstall option. The reinstallation process deletes console data. Keep the console connected to reliable power and allow the process to finish; interrupting it can leave the system unable to start. If the file is in the wrong folder, has the wrong label, or is not the reinstallation file, the console may not recognize it, so follow Sony’s current file naming and placement instructions exactly.

When the PS5 has a solid-white light but no picture

A solid-white indicator means the console is powered on even if the television is blank. Treat this as a display-path problem first:

  1. Confirm the television or monitor is on and set to the HDMI input used by the PS5.
  2. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
  3. Try a different HDMI cable, as Sony recommends during Safe Mode diagnosis.
  4. Try another display input or a different compatible screen if one is available.
  5. Attempt Safe Mode. If the menu appears, the console is running and the original display path is the likely focus.

Check the display before forcing a shutdown: verify its own power indicator, select the input manually, and remove any temporary source-selection confusion. If there is still no image and recovery steps do not help, use Sony’s repair diagnostic flow rather than repeatedly forcing power loss.

Use this decision path for the common symptoms

Orange light and no response

Press the PS button on a USB-connected or previously paired controller. If that fails, press the console’s power button. If the light remains orange, verify the controller connection and wait briefly before trying again; do not unplug an active Rest Mode session. If the console eventually turns white but the screen stays blank, switch to HDMI troubleshooting rather than repeating the wake command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No light and no response

Press the console’s power button, then check the AC connection and outlet. If the PS5 still shows no indicator, test a known-good compatible power cable. Persistent no-power behavior after these external checks belongs in Sony’s repair diagnostic flow. Do not infer a failed internal part, and do not open the console solely to look for one.

Blue light that never turns white or blinking white

Use the three-minute AC power cycle. If the condition returns, enter Safe Mode and follow Sony’s software-recovery instructions, keeping in mind that reinstalling system software deletes data. The color alone does not tell you which internal component is at fault.

Solid white light with a blank screen

Check HDMI and the display input. Try Safe Mode to distinguish a running console with a display fault from a console that cannot complete startup. If Safe Mode appears on another screen, focus on the original television, input, or cable.

Safe Mode will not appear

Try another USB, HDMI, and power cable, one at a time. Then shut the console down, disconnect it for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and retry the Safe Mode button sequence. If it still will not launch, escalate to Sony rather than repeatedly disconnecting power.

When to stop troubleshooting and request service

A PS5 that remains unresponsive after safe external checks, the relevant power cycle, and an attempted Safe Mode path should go to Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool. The tool can check whether the console may qualify for warranty repair, subject to the terms and availability in your region.

Use that route when:

  • There is no indicator and no response after checking the outlet, connections, and a compatible cable.
  • The console powers on and immediately shuts off.
  • The blue or blinking-white error returns after the three-minute procedure and supported recovery steps.
  • Safe Mode will not launch after the cable tests and 20-minute procedure.
  • A solid-white console still produces no image after display checks.

“Won’t turn on” does not identify a particular internal component. Avoid opening the console or buying parts based only on that symptom. Sony’s diagnostic and repair process is the appropriate next step, especially while warranty coverage may apply. The cited support guidance does not establish a universal repair price, a guaranteed turnaround time, or a specific failed component, so ask for the current regional estimate before authorizing paid work.

Prevent another Rest Mode or startup scare

  • Wait for the indicator to turn completely off before disconnecting AC power.
  • Use Rest Mode only when the console has stable power and ventilation.
  • Keep a compatible USB cable available for controller and Safe Mode use.
  • Label or remember which HDMI input the PS5 uses so a blank screen is easier to distinguish from a no-power state.
  • Back up important data before attempting any reset or system-software reinstallation.
  • When troubleshooting, change one cable or setting at a time and note what the indicator does after each attempt.

The key distinction is simple: orange is Rest Mode, no light is powered off, blue or blinking white is a startup error, and solid white with no picture is usually a display-path issue. Matching the action to that state avoids unnecessary data loss and gets you to Safe Mode or Sony repair support only when those steps are justified.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I wake a PS5 from Rest Mode?

Confirm the light is solid orange, then press the PS button on a USB-connected or previously paired controller. If that does not work, press the console’s power button once. Do not unplug the console while the orange indicator is lit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a PS5 with no light mean?

No light means the console is powered off, not in Rest Mode. Press the console’s power button or the PS button on a paired controller. If there is still no response, check the outlet, AC connection, and a compatible cable.

What should I do if the PS5 light stays blue or blinks white?

Sony classifies those states as an error or frozen startup. Follow the three-minute procedure: disconnect AC power safely, wait three minutes, reconnect, and try again. If the condition returns, use Safe Mode and Sony’s software-recovery instructions.

How do I enter PS5 Safe Mode?

Turn the console off, then hold the power button again and release after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.

Does Repair Console Storage erase PS5 data?

Repair Console Storage is identified as the non-erasing storage option. Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) delete user data, so use them only after backing up what you can and accepting the consequences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my PS5 solid white but showing no picture?

A solid-white light means the console is powered on. Check the television’s power and HDMI input, reseat or replace the HDMI cable, try another display input or screen, and attempt Safe Mode. Treat this as a display-path problem before treating it as no power.

What if PS5 Safe Mode will not appear?

Sony recommends testing another USB, HDMI, and power cable, one at a time. Then shut the console down, disconnect it for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and retry the two-beep sequence. If it still fails, use PlayStation Repairs.

Should I buy a replacement power cable or open the console?

A compatible replacement AC cable can be a diagnostic test when the existing cable is suspect, but it is not a guaranteed repair. Confirm model and regional compatibility. Do not open the console or buy internal parts based only on the symptom “won’t turn on.”

When should I send the PS5 for repair?

Use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic flow after safe external checks, the relevant three- or 20-minute procedure, and an attempted Safe Mode path fail; also use it for immediate shutdowns or a persistent solid-white blank screen. The tool can check possible warranty eligibility, which varies by region and terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Read the light before taking action: orange means wake Rest Mode, no light means power on normally, blue or blinking white calls for the three-minute cycle, and solid white with no picture calls for HDMI checks. Protect data by never removing AC power while the indicator is lit or blinking. Use Safe Mode’s non-erasing repair option first, treat reset and reinstallation as data-destructive, and send a persistent fault through Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic flow.
