Start by checking the live PlayStation Network status and recording the PS5’s complete error code. If no outage is reported, run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection, verify the Wi‑Fi network and password, restart the console, and power-cycle the modem and router for at least five minutes. A wired Ethernet test then shows whether the fault is limited to Wi‑Fi or affects the wider network.

First determine whether the problem is PSN, your internet connection, or the PS5

A PS5 can fail to connect because PlayStation Network is unavailable, because the home network cannot reach the internet, because the wireless link is poor, or because a router setting is blocking PlayStation traffic. The fastest troubleshooting path is to separate those possibilities before changing settings.

Check PlayStation Network status before changing the router

Open the live PlayStation Network status page on a phone or computer. If it shows an incident or scheduled maintenance, wait for the service to recover instead of repeatedly changing Wi‑Fi settings. The status page is volatile, so a clear result is only a snapshot of the current moment.

Record the entire error code

Write down every character of the message shown on the PS5. Network and server errors can look similar but have different remedies. Use the matching PlayStation error-code article rather than applying a generic DNS, port, or reset procedure to every code.

Check another device on the same network

Test a phone or computer on the same Wi‑Fi. If other devices also have no internet access, concentrate on the modem, router, service line, or internet provider. If other devices work while the PS5 fails, continue with the console’s network details, wireless signal, and router compatibility. This comparison identifies where to investigate; it does not prove a single cause.

Run the PS5’s built-in internet test

The test shows whether the console can associate with the access point, obtain an address, reach the internet, and communicate with PlayStation services.

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Choose Test Internet Connection.
  4. Wait for the results and note which stage fails, along with the displayed network name and error code.

If the console cannot establish Wi‑Fi at all, the selected SSID may be wrong, the password may have changed, or the access point may be out of range. If internet access succeeds but PlayStation Network sign-in fails, check the service status and the code-specific guidance before altering local settings.

How to read the test without jumping to conclusions

A failure at the Wi‑Fi connection stage points first to the SSID, password, security method, signal, or router wireless settings. A successful local connection followed by an internet failure shifts attention to the modem, router, addressing, or provider. If internet access works but PSN communication fails, the service may be having an incident, the displayed code may identify a temporary condition, or a router may be filtering required traffic. Treat each result as a direction for the next check, not as proof of one exact fault.

Reconnect to Wi‑Fi with the correct network details

Use the official setup screen rather than relying on an old saved profile.

  1. Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
  2. Select the intended wireless network from the list.
  3. Enter the current Wi‑Fi password exactly, including capitalization and symbols.
  4. Confirm the network’s security method when the PS5 requests it, then connect.
  5. Return to Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection to verify the result.

Verify the SSID and password at the source

Make sure the selected network name (SSID) is the one broadcast by your home router, not a guest network, repeater with a similar name, or a neighbor’s access point. The current password may be printed on the router label, stored in the router’s administration interface, or available from the person or provider that manages the network. If the administrator recently changed the password or security mode, remove the stale saved connection by setting it up again with the new details.

If the network does not appear

In Set Up Internet Connection, choose Set Up Manually when the SSID is not listed. If the access point supports Wi‑Fi Protected Setup (WPS), the WPS option can be used instead. Keep the PS5 close enough to the router to complete initial setup; distance and obstructions can prevent a network from appearing even when other devices connect from elsewhere in the room.

Check the router’s IP version

PS5 supports IPv6, but an IPv6-only network is not supported. The router must also provide IPv4. If the router is configured for IPv6-only operation, change it to use IPv4 and obtain configuration help from the router manufacturer or your internet provider. Do not treat an IPv6-only setting as a PS5 password or DNS problem.

Restart both ends of the connection

A restart clears temporary console and network states without deleting games or saved data.

  1. On the PS5, open the power menu and choose Restart PS5.
  2. After it returns to the home screen, turn off the modem and router. Use their power buttons if present; otherwise unplug their power supplies.
  3. Leave both devices off for at least five minutes. This complete pause is longer than a quick unplug-and-replug cycle.
  4. Power the modem back on and allow its connection lights to settle.
  5. Power the router back on, wait for its Wi‑Fi to return, and then run the PS5 internet test again.

Some PlayStation error guidance describes temporary congestion or a busy service line. When the local checks pass but the same code persists, waiting and trying again later can be appropriate. PlayStation Support states: “If the above does not solve the problem, the line is likely to be temporarily busy. Please leave it for a while and try again later.”

Improve the wireless path between the PS5 and router

Wireless performance depends on the physical path, not just the speed advertised by an internet plan. For a controlled test, move the PS5 closer to the router and retry the connection.

  • Remove large furniture, cabinets, or other obstructions between the console and access point.
  • Temporarily move the console away from likely sources of radio interference and test again.
  • Avoid judging the result from a single corner of the room; compare a short-distance test with the console’s normal position.
  • Once a connection works nearby, return the PS5 to its intended location and test whether placement is the deciding factor.

If the PS5 connects only when it is close to the router, investigate placement, interference, or the router’s wireless configuration rather than changing PlayStation account settings. A connection that fails at every distance points toward credentials, router compatibility, addressing, filtering, or a service issue.

Use a wired LAN connection as a diagnostic comparison

An Ethernet test removes the wireless radio link from the equation. It is optional: buy or borrow a suitable LAN cable only if you do not already have one and can safely run it from the router to the PS5. A cable cannot repair an internet-provider outage or a PlayStation Network incident.

  1. Connect one end of the LAN cable to an available router port and the other to the PS5.
  2. On the console, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
  3. Select Set Up Wired LAN.
  4. Choose Connect, then run Test Internet Connection.

Interpret the comparison

Result What it suggests Next focus
Ethernet works; Wi‑Fi fails The internet service and basic PS5 networking are reachable over the cable. Wireless placement, interference, SSID/password selection, or router Wi‑Fi configuration.
Ethernet and Wi‑Fi both fail The issue is not isolated to the wireless radio path. PSN status, router/modem access, IPv4 availability, filtering, or the exact error code.
Neither test reaches the internet, while other devices also fail The home network or service line is affected. Modem/router status and the internet provider.
Internet test passes but PSN communication fails Basic internet access exists, but service communication or account-side conditions may remain. PSN status and code-specific PlayStation guidance.

These are diagnostic clues, not measured success rates. PlayStation’s published guidance does not provide an official percentage showing how often any individual fix works.

Handle advanced router settings only when the evidence points there

PlayStation lists IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, and proxy fields in advanced setup. The CFI-7000 model group also lists Multi-Link Operation (MLO). These settings can be useful for a specific router or error, but changing them at random can create a second problem. If you are unfamiliar with them, PlayStation advises asking your internet provider or network administrator.

DNS or a static IP for NW-102650-4

For error NW-102650-4, PlayStation says a temporary DNS change or a manually configured static IP may help. Apply either only while following the official instructions for that code and only when you can restore the original values. A DNS change is not a universal cure for every PS5 connection failure.

Ports and filtering

The same code-specific guidance lists these PlayStation network ports:

Protocol Ports
TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
UDP 3478, 3479, 49152–65535

Port forwarding or opening firewall rules should be done in the router’s administration interface with the administrator’s approval. Another PlayStation communication-error page recommends asking the internet provider about port filtering. Do not open every port, disable the firewall permanently, or copy a rule intended for a different router model. If the provider manages the router, ask its support team to check filtering and firmware.

MTU, proxy, DHCP, and MLO

MTU, proxy, DHCP host name, and MLO values are environment-dependent. Leave them at their normal automatic or default configuration unless the router administrator or the matching PlayStation error article gives you a reason to change one. Record the original value before editing so it can be restored if the test becomes worse.

Choose the next step from the observed result

What you observe Most useful next action

Only the PS5 lacks internet while other devices work Restart the PS5, reconnect the profile, improve its position, and compare with Ethernet.
Other devices also lose internet Power-cycle modem and router, then contact the provider if service does not return.
Ethernet succeeds but Wi‑Fi does not Investigate wireless range, obstructions, interference, and router Wi‑Fi settings.
Both connection types fail with a specific code Follow the exact PlayStation error-code article and check router addressing or filtering only if that article calls for it.
The router is IPv6-only Enable IPv4 as well and ask the router manufacturer or provider for configuration help.

A concise troubleshooting order

When you want a single checklist, use this order and stop when the connection returns: check the live PSN status; record the complete code; test another device; run Test Internet Connection; verify the SSID, password, and security method; reconnect through Set Up Internet Connection; move the console closer to the router; restart the PS5; turn off the modem and router for at least five minutes; then compare with wired LAN. Only after those checks should you consider code-specific DNS, static-IP, port, filtering, or IPv4 changes.

Keep notes as you go: whether the SSID was visible, whether another device worked, which test stage failed, whether Ethernet changed the result, and what router settings were edited. This prevents repeating the same failed experiment and gives an ISP or PlayStation technician useful facts.

When to contact the provider, router administrator, or PlayStation

Contact the internet provider or the person who administers the router when multiple devices are offline, the modem cannot obtain service, IPv4 is disabled, or router filtering and port rules require changes. Give them the PS5 error code, the result of the Ethernet comparison, and whether other devices connect; those details are more useful than simply reporting that “Wi‑Fi is broken.”

Use the exact PlayStation support article for a persistent code. If the status page is clear, credentials are correct, the console has been restarted, the modem and router have completed the five-minute power cycle, and both connection types still fail, follow PlayStation’s support or Repairs path for possible console-side troubleshooting. Retry later when the code-specific guidance indicates a temporary service condition.

What to avoid while troubleshooting

  • Do not assume a PSN outage is a bad password; check live service status first.
  • Do not repeatedly change DNS, MTU, proxy, or port settings without recording the original configuration.
  • Do not claim that Ethernet proves the internet provider is healthy; it only compares the wireless path with a cable at that moment.
  • Do not infer a guaranteed fix from a restart or DNS change. Official pages provide procedures, not outcome percentages.
  • Do not reset the console as an early network step. The documented sequence uses status checks, connection tests, credential verification, restarts, placement, and a wired comparison before escalation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check first when my PS5 is offline?

Check the live PlayStation Network status page, record the complete error code, and test another device on the same network. This separates a PSN incident or whole-home outage from a PS5-specific problem.

Where do I enter my Wi‑Fi password on PS5?

Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select the correct SSID, and enter the current password and requested security method. Then run Test Internet Connection.

Why can’t my PS5 see my Wi‑Fi network?

Confirm the router is broadcasting the expected SSID, move the console closer, and remove obstructions or interference. If it remains absent, use Set Up Manually or WPS when supported.

How long should I unplug my modem and router?

Turn both off and leave them off for at least five minutes. Restart the modem first, wait for its connection lights, then restart the router and retest the PS5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Ethernet prove my PSN account is fine?

No. Wired success shows that the cable path reaches the network at that moment. PSN can still be unavailable, and account or service errors still require their own status and code checks.

Should I change DNS on every PS5 connection problem?

No. PlayStation mentions a temporary DNS change or static IP for specific error NW-102650-4 guidance. Make advanced changes only when the matching instructions call for them and record the original values.

What ports does PlayStation list for NW-102650-4?

The listed TCP ports are 80, 443, 3478, 3479, and 3480. Listed UDP ports are 3478, 3479, and 49152–65535. Ask the router administrator or provider about filtering before changing firewall rules.

Can a PS5 use an IPv6-only router?

No. PS5 supports IPv6, but PlayStation says IPv6-only connections are unsupported. The router must also provide IPv4.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy an Ethernet cable?

Only for the optional wired comparison if you do not already have a suitable LAN cable and can run it from the router to the PS5. Buying one will not fix a provider or PSN outage.

When should I contact PlayStation?

Escalate after checking status, credentials, both connection types, console and router restarts, and the exact error-code guidance. Use PlayStation support or Repairs when persistent failures remain.

The Bottom Line

Check PSN status, capture the exact code, verify the SSID and password, run the PS5 internet test, restart the console and modem/router for five minutes, and compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet. Leave DNS, ports, MTU, proxy, and IP changes to code-specific guidance or your network administrator.
