When a PS5 will not connect to Wi‑Fi or a game download will not start, first determine whether the failure is on PlayStation Network, your home network, the console’s connection settings, or one download in the queue. Check service status before changing router settings, then run the PS5 connection test. A wired LAN attempt is a useful diagnostic if you have an Ethernet cable.
The sequence below moves from low-risk checks to configuration changes. It separates a complete network failure from a stalled download, so you do not rebuild the PS5 database or alter DNS settings when the real problem is a temporary service interruption.

Identify which problem you actually have
Use the symptom and scope to choose the right branch. A PSN outage can block sign-in, store access, and downloads even when other devices browse normally. A router or internet-service problem usually affects multiple devices. A console-only Wi‑Fi problem points to the PS5’s saved network, signal conditions, or settings. If the PS5 is online and only one game remains stuck, treat it as a download or installation problem rather than a basic Wi‑Fi failure.
| What you observe | Likely scope | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| PSN sign-in, Store, and downloads fail while other devices work | PlayStation Network outage or maintenance | Check PlayStation Network service status and wait for service to return. |
| PS5 and other devices cannot reach the internet | Modem, router, or internet-service problem | Restart network equipment and check the provider connection. |
| Only the PS5 cannot join Wi‑Fi | Wireless signal, saved network, password, or console configuration | Run the PS5 connection test, verify the network details, and improve the wireless path. |
| Internet test succeeds but one game is stuck at waiting, queued, or an error | Download queue, game installation, service congestion, or software version | Pause and resume, then cancel/delete and retry from Game Library. |
| Wi‑Fi fails but wired LAN works | Wireless path or Wi‑Fi configuration | Use wired LAN temporarily and reconfigure Wi‑Fi when convenient. |
1. Check PlayStation Network status before changing anything
Open the current PlayStation Network status information on a phone or computer. Look for an outage or scheduled maintenance affecting account management, gaming, the Store, or downloads. PlayStation’s connection and download guidance both place this check early because a service-side interruption cannot be repaired by changing your router.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
If a component is reported as unavailable, leave the PS5 and router settings alone. Retry after the status returns to normal. During an outage, a successful Wi‑Fi connection on the PS5 does not guarantee that the Store or a game download can authenticate.
2. Run the PS5 internet connection test
On the console, go to Settings > Network and select Test Internet Connection. Let the test complete and note which stage fails: obtaining an IP address, connecting to the internet, or signing in to PlayStation Network. The result helps distinguish a local wireless problem from an internet-service or PSN problem.
Verify the saved wireless details
In the network settings, confirm that the PS5 is selecting your intended Wi‑Fi network, not a similarly named guest or extender network. Re-enter the Wi‑Fi password carefully, including capitalization and punctuation. Confirm the router’s security method is one the PS5 can use; if the router was recently replaced or its security mode changed, remove the old connection and set it up again using the current credentials.
Do not infer a fault from a download speed number alone. The official guidance does not establish a universal speed threshold for PS5 downloads. A test that reaches the internet but has unstable latency or intermittent loss can still leave a download stalled.
3. Apply the simple wireless fixes
Improve the radio path
Move the PS5 closer to the router for a test. Remove large objects and electronic equipment that sit directly between them, and avoid enclosing the console in a cabinet that blocks ventilation and radio signals. A short-distance test is useful even if the console normally sits in the same room: if the connection works nearby, distance, walls, or interference are contributing factors.

Restart the console
Restart the PS5 from the power menu, wait for it to return to the home screen, and run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection again. A restart clears a temporary network state without deleting games or saved data.
Reconfigure the Wi‑Fi connection
If the network test still fails, open the PS5 internet-connection setup, select the correct wireless network, and enter its current password. Reconfiguring is preferable to repeatedly attempting a stale saved profile. If the router offers separate network names, test the one intended for the PS5 rather than switching between names during a download.
4. Test with a wired LAN connection
A wired test separates a Wi‑Fi-specific fault from a broader network or service fault. Connect the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet LAN cable, then use this exact path: Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect.
If wired LAN succeeds while Wi‑Fi fails, the wireless signal, interference, saved Wi‑Fi profile, or router wireless configuration deserves attention. You can leave the wired connection in place while downloading and troubleshoot Wi‑Fi later.
A wired success does not prove that the router, internet provider, or PlayStation Network is healthy in every respect. The cable bypasses the radio link, but the PS5 still depends on the router’s internet connection and on PlayStation services. If wired LAN also fails, continue with the router and service checks rather than assuming the Wi‑Fi radio is defective.

5. Restart the modem and router correctly
For the PS5 network error guidance associated with NW-102650-4, PlayStation instructs users to turn off both the router and modem, wait at least five minutes, and then restart them. Follow that order even if a shorter reboot is customary: the waiting period allows the equipment and provider session to end cleanly.

- Power off the router and the modem or gateway. If you have one combined unit, turn off that unit.
- Wait at least five minutes.
- Power the modem or gateway back on and wait until its normal internet indicators settle.
- Power the router back on if it is separate, wait for Wi‑Fi to return, and run the PS5 connection test.
Check the router manufacturer’s current firmware guidance. PlayStation specifically recommends consulting the router vendor about firmware when handling this class of connection error. Do not change advanced settings blindly; record the original values so you can undo an unsuccessful change.
6. If the PS5 is online but a game will not download
When the connection test succeeds and other online features work, focus on the individual item in Downloads/Uploads. A queue can pause or fail independently of the console’s ability to browse the internet.
Pause and resume the item
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the PS5 control center or the relevant download notification.
- Select the game or update that is stuck.
- Choose Pause, wait briefly, and choose Resume.
- Watch whether the transfer starts and whether the remaining-size indicator changes.
This step refreshes the queue without removing the partially downloaded content. If the item resumes, allow it to finish before starting additional large downloads.
Cancel, delete, and retry
If pausing and resuming does not work, select the item in Downloads/Uploads, choose Cancel and Delete, and then start the download again from Game Library. This removes the failed or stalled download data; it does not remove your account entitlement. Confirm that you have enough free storage before retrying, because an installation can fail after transfer if the drive lacks room.

After retrying, check PlayStation Network status again, run Test Internet Connection, and install any available PS5 system-software update. PlayStation’s download guidance treats these checks as part of recovery, not as optional extras.
7. Handle update and installation errors separately
When to use Safe Mode maintenance
For persistent update or installation trouble after the ordinary download steps, PlayStation’s update guidance includes Safe Mode options named Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. These are maintenance actions for repeated update or installation problems, not the first response to an ordinary Wi‑Fi failure. Follow the current official Safe Mode instructions on the screen and read each option’s warning before confirming.
Do not choose a more destructive reset merely because a download is slow. Start with the named cache-clearing or database-rebuilding option in the update guidance, and keep backups of important data according to your normal PS5 backup plan.
Error CE-107863-5
For CE-107863-5, PlayStation’s guidance includes retrying the installation from Game Library. It also notes that temporary network congestion can be a factor, so trying again later is reasonable when service status is normal but the installation repeatedly fails. If the error persists, combine the retry with current system software, a completed connection test, and the Safe Mode options in the update guidance rather than repeatedly restarting the same stalled queue.

IPv4 and IPv6
PS5 supports IPv6 network connections but does not support IPv6-only network connections. If your router or provider is configured as IPv6-only, change it to use IPv4 as well and consult the router manufacturer for the exact menu. A dual-stack network that offers IPv4 and IPv6 is different from an IPv6-only network.

IP address, DNS, MTU, and proxy
The PS5 connection setup exposes advanced IP-address, DNS, MTU, and proxy choices. These values can matter on managed, unusual, or provider-specific networks, but an incorrect manual value can prevent connectivity. If you are unfamiliar with them, PlayStation advises asking your internet-service provider or network administrator. Make one change at a time, record the previous setting, and rerun Test Internet Connection after each change.
Do not alter DNS, MTU, or proxy settings simply because a game download is slow while the network test and other services are healthy. Those settings are troubleshooting tools for a demonstrated configuration issue, not universal speed improvements.
9. Use the error and scope to choose the next action
| Result | What it tells you | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| PSN status shows outage or maintenance | The service side may be blocking sign-in or downloads. | Wait for restoration, then retry. |
| PS5 cannot obtain an IP address on Wi‑Fi | The wireless credentials, signal, or router DHCP path may be failing. | Re-enter the network, move closer, restart equipment, and test wired LAN. |
| Wi‑Fi fails but wired LAN connects | The radio path or Wi‑Fi configuration is implicated. | Use wired LAN and troubleshoot wireless placement or settings. |
| Both Wi‑Fi and wired LAN fail on the PS5 | The router’s internet path, provider, PSN, or console configuration may be involved. | Check service status, restart modem/router, verify software, and contact the provider or PlayStation support with the error code. |
| Connection test passes; one download remains stuck | The queue or installation is the immediate problem. | Pause/resume, then cancel/delete and retry from Game Library. |
| Update errors continue after retrying | Cached or database state, software version, congestion, or a specific installation fault may remain. | Use the relevant update guidance, including Safe Mode cache/database options, and retry later if congestion is suspected. |
10. When to contact your provider or PlayStation support
Contact the internet-service provider or network administrator when other devices also lose internet access, the router requires firmware or IPv4 changes, or you need help with IP, DNS, MTU, proxy, or security settings. Give them the modem/router model, the time of the failure, and whether wired LAN works.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsContact PlayStation support when the service status is normal, the home network works on other devices, both Wi‑Fi and wired tests fail or show a persistent console error, and the download recovery steps do not resolve the issue. Have the exact error code, the result of Test Internet Connection, the connection type used, and the affected game or update ready. Error codes such as NW-102650-4 and CE-107863-5 have specific guidance, so quoting the code is more useful than describing the symptom as merely “slow.”
A practical order to keep
- Check PlayStation Network status.
- Run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection and verify the Wi‑Fi network, password, and security method.
- Move the console, remove obvious interference, restart the PS5, and reconfigure Wi‑Fi if necessary.
- Try Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect.
- Turn off the modem and router, wait at least five minutes, restart them, and test again.
- For a stalled download, pause/resume; if that fails, cancel/delete and retry from Game Library.
- Install current system software and use the relevant update or error guidance.
- Only then investigate IPv4/IPv6, DNS, MTU, proxy, Safe Mode maintenance, or provider-specific configuration.
This order preserves the simplest explanation for the longest: a service interruption, a wireless path problem, or a queue that needs restarting is more common and less risky to address than an advanced console reset or manual network configuration.
