If a PS5 game update is stuck, first check PlayStation service status, then test the console’s connection. In Downloads/Uploads, pause and resume the item; if it still will not move, cancel and delete that queued download and start it again from Game Library. Next check free storage and system software, restart the PS5, and only then use Safe Mode, reinstall the game, or follow the exact error-code instructions. A game patch and a PS5 system-software update are different problems with different recovery procedures.
Identify what is actually stuck
Before changing anything, look at the item in the PS5 control centre’s Downloads/Uploads list. A game patch, a complete game download, and a PS5 system-software update do not use the same troubleshooting path.

Do not use the USB system-software procedure for an ordinary game patch, and do not choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a routine game-update fix. Reinstalling system software deletes all data on the console; deleting and reinstalling one game is a much narrower operation.

Open PlayStation’s official service-status page and look for an alert affecting downloads, games, account services, or PlayStation Network. If an incident is reported, wait for the service to recover before repeatedly cancelling downloads, changing network settings, or reinstalling the game. A server-side interruption can make a healthy console look broken, and local changes will not repair an outage.

If the status page shows no incident, continue with the local checks. Service status can change while you troubleshoot, so recheck it if several unrelated downloads or online features fail at once.
2. Test the PS5 internet connection
On the console, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Let the test finish and note whether the PS5 reports a connection problem. If it does, solve the network issue before trying the update again: verify that other devices can reach the internet, restart the home router if appropriate, and remove any temporary wireless obstruction or interference.
A wired connection is an optional troubleshooting aid. If your router is close enough, connect the PS5 with a Cat 6 Ethernet cable and run the same test again. PlayStation specifically recommends a wired connection where possible in its system-software-update troubleshooting; that does not make Ethernet a guaranteed fix for every game patch, and it cannot resolve a PlayStation service outage, a full drive, or a damaged installation.

If the connection test succeeds but only one game is affected, proceed to the download queue rather than changing every network setting. A successful test confirms that the console can reach the network at that moment; it does not prove that the particular game download is still valid.
3. Restart the game download in Downloads/Uploads
Use the least disruptive queue controls first. They preserve the installed game and normally take less time than reinstalling it.
- Open the PS5 control centre and select Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the affected game update or download.
- Choose Pause, wait briefly for the item to enter a paused state, then choose Resume.
- Watch the item for a while to see whether its status changes from queued or paused and the progress begins moving.
For a download that will not start or remains stuck after a pause/resume cycle, remove only the queued item:

- Return to Downloads/Uploads and select the affected item.
- Choose Cancel and Delete for that download.
- Open Game Library, locate the game, and select the option to download or update it again.
Canceling the queued download is not the same as deleting the installed game. Read the confirmation carefully so you do not remove the game itself when you only intend to remove the failed queue entry.

4. Confirm free storage and current PS5 software
Check the available space
Go to Settings > Storage and check the free space on the drive where the game is installed. The game’s product details show its minimum free-space requirement; compare that requirement with the available capacity rather than relying on the size of the patch alone. A console can need more working room while applying an update than the visible download amount suggests, so leave a meaningful margin instead of trying to finish with only a few megabytes free.
If space is tight, remove or move content you can restore later, then return to the game’s product page and retry the update. Do not delete saved data as a first response. The objective is to create free storage for the game update while preserving saves and other irreplaceable content.
Check console system software
Keep the PS5’s system software current. A game update can fail when the console is running software that the title or the download service no longer supports. Install any normal system-software update offered in the console settings, restart when prompted, and then retry the game update.
Do not confuse checking for a routine system update with the emergency USB procedure described later. The USB method is for a PS5 system-software update that repeatedly fails, not for a game patch.

After checking the network, queue, storage, and console software, restart the PS5 from the power menu. A restart clears temporary state in the download manager and closes the game or system process that may still hold files open. Once the console has fully restarted, open Downloads/Uploads and retry the update from Game Library if it is no longer queued.

If the update starts after the restart, let it complete before launching the game. Interrupting the installation by repeatedly opening and closing the title can leave you with the same pending update or another verification pass.
6. Use Safe Mode for a persistent download or update failure
When ordinary retries do not work, PlayStation’s game-download troubleshooting recommends two Safe Mode maintenance options: Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Start the PS5 in Safe Mode using PlayStation’s documented startup procedure, then choose the applicable option from the Safe Mode menu.
Clear Cache
Clear the cache first when the queue repeatedly stalls even though service status, the connection test, and free storage look normal. This removes temporary system data that can interfere with a download without asking you to reinstall every game.

If clearing the cache does not help, use Rebuild Database. PlayStation describes this operation as scanning the drive and creating a new database of the content on the console. It is intended to correct database or content-index problems that can prevent the system from locating or processing an update correctly.
Do not power off the console while Safe Mode is carrying out either operation. When the PS5 returns to the normal interface, check Downloads/Uploads and retry the affected game. Safe Mode maintenance is a later step because it takes longer and changes system data structures, while pause/resume, canceling a queue item, and restarting are easier to undo.
7. Delete and reinstall only the affected game
If the update still will not download or install, PlayStation’s game/app troubleshooting path allows deleting the affected game and reinstalling it. Treat this as a more disruptive recovery step: you must download the game again or reinstall it from its disc, and the process can take substantially longer than retrying a patch.

- Confirm that your saved data is protected by the storage method you normally use before deleting the game. The purpose of this step is to remove the game installation, not your saves.
- Delete the affected game from the PS5’s game or storage management controls.
- Open Game Library and select the game to download it again. If you own a disc copy, insert the disc and reinstall from the disc instead.
- Apply the latest game update after the base installation is complete.
If a clean reinstall succeeds, the previous installation or its update files were likely the local cause. If the same failure returns immediately, stop repeating reinstalls and move to the exact error-code guidance or PlayStation Support; repeated deletion will not fix a service outage or a failing drive.
8. Follow the exact error-code instructions
Error codes are not interchangeable. Write down the complete code exactly as displayed and use PlayStation’s support entry for that code rather than applying a remedy for a different failure.
CE-120706-6: update stopped installing
PlayStation Support describes CE-120706-6 as: “An error has occurred that stopped the game update from installing on your PlayStation®5 console.” Its listed remedies are to restore licenses, restart the PS5, rebuild the database in Safe Mode, and delete and reinstall the game if necessary. Use those actions in that order unless the support entry for your region presents a different sequence.
CE-107928-7: download stopped
CE-107928-7 is listed as an error that stopped a game from downloading. It is a different condition from an update that downloaded but failed during installation. Open the support entry for CE-107928-7 and follow its instructions; do not assume that the CE-120706-6 sequence covers every detail of this code.
Other codes
For any other code, copy the full identifier, including every letter, number, and hyphen. The code-specific page may distinguish an account, license, storage, network, or installation problem and can prevent you from taking an unnecessary destructive step.
9. What to do when the stuck item is a PS5 system-software update
Use this section only when Downloads/Uploads identifies the item as the PS5 system-software update. The recovery path is separate from a game patch.

- Select the system-software update in Downloads/Uploads.
- Open View Error Info if that option appears.
- Choose Try Again.
- If repeated attempts fail, use PlayStation’s official USB update method rather than applying the game-reinstallation steps above.
The USB method requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, plus an update file with the exact name and folder structure prescribed by PlayStation. A misspelled filename, incorrect directory, or unsupported drive format can make the console reject the file, so follow the current official instructions character for character.
Do not select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) merely because a game update is stuck. PlayStation states that reinstalling system software deletes all data on the console. It is a system-recovery operation, not a normal way to repair one game’s patch.

When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support after the service check, connection test, queue restart, storage and system-software checks, restart, Safe Mode maintenance, and (where appropriate) a clean game reinstall have failed. Include the game title, whether you use a disc or digital license, the exact error code, and which steps you already completed. That information helps support separate a service issue from a license, storage, network, or installation fault.

If several games fail at the same time, an outage or console-wide network/storage problem is more plausible than a single damaged installation. If only one title fails while other downloads work, tell support that contrast; it is useful diagnostic information and can prevent repeating unrelated network steps.
