If your PS5 controller keeps disconnecting or will not pair, start with a USB reconnection, then reset the controller and install the latest PS5 and controller software. Those steps address pairing and connection failures. Input lag needs a more cautious diagnosis: PlayStation’s published guidance does not identify one universal cause or promise that a reset, cable swap, or replacement will remove delay.
Use the symptom-specific sequence below. It separates a controller that cannot establish a connection from one that works wired but drops wirelessly, and from delay that may be limited to one game or to streamed play.

| The controller will not connect at all | Turn on the PS5, connect the controller with a compatible USB cable, and press PS. | If the console recognizes it, the original wireless pairing may have been lost or the controller may have been paired to another PS5. |
| It connects, then disconnects repeatedly | Repeat the USB reconnection, test the cable and port connection, and reset the controller if the problem returns. | A stable wired session followed by wireless dropouts is an observation worth reporting, not proof of a specific wireless component fault. |
| Buttons feel delayed | Determine whether the delay occurs in every game, only one title, or streamed play, then make a short wired comparison. | PlayStation does not establish a single input-lag cause or a guaranteed setting that removes it. |
| The controller worked with a different PS5 | Pair it again with the PS5 you intend to use. | Each DualSense pairs with one PS5 console at a time, so changing consoles requires another pairing procedure. |
Before you begin
Have the PS5, the controller, and a known compatible USB-C data cable together. The cable included with the controller is the best first choice. A replacement must carry data as well as power; a cable that only charges can make the controller appear active while preventing the console from completing pairing. Keep the console powered during software updates, and change one variable at a time so each test has a clear result.

Identify the controller before following model-specific menu directions. The standard DualSense and DualSense Edge share the basic USB pairing and rear-button reset process, but the documented communication-method menu is specifically for Edge. If you are unsure which model you have, use the standard pairing procedure and state the model when contacting support.
Reconnect a DualSense by USB
USB pairing is PlayStation’s first-line procedure for a DualSense that will not pair or has lost its connection.
- Turn on the PS5 console.
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a compatible USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Wait for the console to recognize the controller and show it as the active input device.
- Once it is working, disconnect the cable and try wireless use if that is how you normally play.
If wireless play remains stable after the cable is removed, the immediate pairing problem has been cleared. If it disconnects again, continue with the reset and software-update steps rather than repeatedly pressing PS without changing the connection state.

If the controller was paired to another PS5
A DualSense can be paired with only one PS5 console at a time. A controller previously used with a different console is not automatically paired to the new one. Connect it to the intended PS5 by USB and press PS, following the same sequence above. After the console accepts the pairing, disconnect the cable and test wireless use.
If the PS5 does not respond to the pairing attempt
Confirm that the cable is fully seated at both ends and that you are using a data-capable cable. Try the supplied cable before buying a replacement. If the controller still does not connect, move to a controller reset; do not treat the reset as a reset of the PS5 console.
Reset the controller without resetting the PS5
The DualSense has a small reset button in a hole on the back. Resetting the controller is separate from resetting the console and does not erase the PS5.

- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Disconnect the controller from the USB cable.
- Find the small reset hole on the back of the controller.
- Insert a pin or similar thin tool and hold the reset button for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with the official cable.
- Press the PS button and wait for the console to recognize it.
After the reset, remove the cable and check whether wireless play stays connected. If the controller still will not pair or the disconnection returns, update the PS5 system software and the controller software before deciding that the hardware has failed. Do not press the reset button while the controller is still connected if you are trying to follow the documented sequence; disconnect USB first.
Install the current PS5 and DualSense software
PlayStation says controller software updates are added when PS5 system software is updated. Updating both sides is therefore an important step after a reset or recurring connection problem.
Update PS5 system software
Open the PS5 system-software update controls and install the latest version available. Keep the console powered through the update and allow it to finish before testing the controller again. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance specifically advises updating the PS5 system software when connection trouble persists.
Check DualSense device software on the PS5
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Choose Accessories.
- Open Controller (General).
- Select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is offered.
If the controller is unreliable enough that navigating the PS5 is difficult, update it from a Windows PC with the PlayStation Accessories application. The PC route is an update option; it does not replace the USB pairing and reset sequence for a controller that cannot establish a connection with the console. After updating, repeat a short wired test and then a wireless test so you can tell whether the behavior changed.
Use a wired comparison to investigate wireless dropouts
A short wired test can show whether the symptom changes when the controller is connected by USB. Connect the controller with a compatible data cable and use it long enough to see whether the same disconnection occurs. A controller that behaves well while wired but drops when used wirelessly gives you a useful detail for support, but it does not prove that the wireless radio, the console, or any single component is defective.
DualSense Edge communication setting
For a DualSense Edge, the official manual documents a specific communication-method setting:

- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Choose Accessories.
- Select Controller (General).
- Open Communication Method.
- Choose Use USB Cable.
This menu path is documented for DualSense Edge. Do not assume that the same setting appears on every standard DualSense model or every software version. For a standard DualSense, use the USB connection as an observation and identify the exact controller model when seeking support.
Check the cable and port connection
Pairing and reconnection depend on a working USB data path. Start with the official cable supplied with the controller. If you use a replacement, confirm that it carries data, not just power. A cable that charges the battery but lacks data lines can make the controller appear powered while preventing pairing.
- Reseat the cable at the controller and console ends before repeating the PS-button step.
- Check that the connector is not pulling out during use; an intermittent physical connection can interrupt pairing.
- When comparing cables, change one item at a time so you know which observation belongs to the cable and which belongs to the controller.
- After a successful wired pairing, disconnect the cable deliberately and test wireless operation rather than assuming that charging means the wireless link is fixed.
These checks are connection troubleshooting, not a promise that a new cable will cure input lag. A cable replacement is justified for a failed data connection; it should not be presented as a guaranteed latency remedy.
Diagnose what “input lag” means before trying to fix it
Input lag is a description of delayed response, not a diagnosis. Before changing hardware, identify the exact pattern:
- Controller response: Do button presses and stick movement feel late in the PS5 menus as well as in games?
- One title: Does the delay appear only in one game while other games feel normal?
- Streaming: Does it occur only when playing through streamed or remote gameplay rather than from a game installed on the PS5?
- Connection state: Does the sensation change when the controller is connected by USB?
PlayStation’s published support material does not distinguish these causes, publish a latency measurement, specify a universal setting for reducing delay, or state that resetting a DualSense will fix input lag. Treat the questions above as information to collect, not as proof of a particular cause.
Make a controlled wired check
- Note the game, mode, and action that feels delayed.
- Connect the controller with a compatible USB data cable.
- Repeat the same action for a short period under similar conditions.
- Record whether the delay is unchanged, reduced, or absent while wired.
- Repeat in a second game or in the PS5 interface if possible.
If the symptom changes only in one game, record that detail instead of concluding that the controller is defective. If it changes between wired and wireless use, report both conditions to support. Neither result establishes a guaranteed repair by itself. Avoid changing the game, connection method, and controller at the same time; doing so removes the comparison that could help a technician.

When the controller keeps disconnecting after the standard fixes
Once you have completed USB reconnection, the five-second reset, and the available PS5 and DualSense software updates, persistent connection trouble needs a support diagnosis. PlayStation directs users to its PlayStation Repairs service when these steps do not resolve the issue.
Before opening the repair diagnostic, write down:
- The controller model: standard DualSense or DualSense Edge.
- Whether the controller pairs by USB at all.
- Whether it remains stable when the cable is connected.
- Whether it disconnects immediately or only after wireless use.
- Whether the controller was previously paired with another PS5.
- Which reset and update steps you completed.
- Whether the symptom began after a software update or a change in the cable or connection.
- Whether the issue occurs in the PS5 interface, every game, one title, or streamed play.
This record gives the repair process a reproducible description. If the diagnostic identifies a hardware failure, a replacement controller may then be appropriate. PlayStation’s instructions do not support buying a replacement as the first troubleshooting step, and they do not provide a universal replacement price or repair-success rate.
A complete decision path
| Stage | Do this | Next decision |
|---|---|---|
| 1. USB reconnection | Power on the PS5, connect a compatible data cable, and press PS. | If recognized, test wireless use after removing the cable. If not, reset the controller. |
| 2. Controller reset | With the PS5 off and USB disconnected, hold the rear reset button for at least five seconds, then reconnect by official cable and press PS. | If connection trouble remains, update PS5 and controller software. |
| 3. Software updates | Install the latest PS5 system software and check the DualSense device-software screen. | Retest wired and wireless operation. |
| 4. Wired comparison | Use a data cable long enough to observe whether disconnections or perceived delay change. Use the Edge communication setting only on a DualSense Edge. | Record the difference; do not label it a confirmed hardware diagnosis. |
| 5. Repair escalation | Use PlayStation Repairs for persistent connection trouble after the above steps. | Follow the diagnostic outcome before considering replacement hardware. |
Common mistakes that waste time
- Using a charging-only USB cable and assuming that a lit controller must have a data connection.
- Resetting the console when the documented procedure calls for resetting only the controller.
- Skipping the five-second hold or reconnecting USB before the PS5 is turned off.
- Assuming that pairing with one PS5 carries over automatically to another.
- Calling every delayed response “controller lag” without checking another game, the PS5 interface, or a wired connection.
- Applying the DualSense Edge communication menu to a standard DualSense without confirming the model.
- Buying a replacement before completing the official reconnection, reset, update, and repair-diagnostic sequence.
What not to promise
- A reset is not a PS5-console reset and does not guarantee a lasting wireless connection.
- A replacement cable must support data for pairing; charging capability alone is insufficient.
- A cable swap or controller reset is not an established cure for input lag.
- A controller that works while wired is not automatically proven defective wirelessly.
- The DualSense Edge USB communication menu should not be described as a universal setting for every DualSense model.
- No failure rate, latency figure, repair-success percentage, or standard repair cost is established for this troubleshooting process.
Following the sequence gives you the clearest separation between a lost pairing, a recurring connection symptom, and an unresolved delay complaint. If the official reconnection, reset, and update procedures do not restore reliable operation, the next evidence-based step is PlayStation Repairs rather than repeated resets or an unverified replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my PS5 controller keep disconnecting?
Reconnect it by USB, reset the controller with the rear button held for at least five seconds, and update PS5 and DualSense software. If it works wired but repeatedly drops wirelessly, record that pattern and use PlayStation Repairs; it does not prove a particular component is faulty.
How do I pair a PS5 controller that will not pair?
Turn on the PS5, connect the DualSense with a compatible USB data cable, and press PS. A controller can pair with only one PS5 at a time, so one previously used with another console must be paired again.

How do I reset a PS5 DualSense controller?
Turn off the PS5, disconnect USB, press the small reset button in the controller’s rear hole with a pin for at least five seconds, then reconnect with the official cable and press PS.
Where do I update DualSense software?
On PS5, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. The PlayStation Accessories app on a Windows PC is another update route.
Will resetting or replacing the controller fix input lag?
There is no universal guarantee. First check whether the delay occurs in menus, every game, one title, streamed play, or only wirelessly. Compare a short wired session and provide those details to support.

Can I force USB communication on every PS5 controller?
The documented Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Communication Method > Use USB Cable path is for DualSense Edge. Do not assume it appears on every standard DualSense or software version.
When should I replace my PS5 controller?
Use the official reconnection, reset, update, and wired-comparison steps first. If connection trouble persists, run PlayStation Repairs; consider replacement only after its diagnostic or a repair assessment indicates hardware failure.
The Bottom Line
Pair by USB first, reset the controller—not the console—if needed, and update both PS5 and DualSense software. Use a data-capable cable and a wired comparison to document symptoms, but do not treat either as a guaranteed input-lag cure. Persistent connection problems belong with PlayStation Repairs before you buy replacement hardware.
