Start by finding where the screen is supposed to send audio. A portable CarPlay display can show the CarPlay interface while its sound is routed separately through a built-in speaker, a 3.5 mm AUX cable, an FM transmitter, or Bluetooth. Select that route on the screen, select the matching input in the vehicle, and check volume and mute on the screen, iPhone, and stereo. CarPlay being visible does not prove that the selected audio path reaches the car speakers.
Work through the route-specific checks below before resetting anything. The exact ports, menu names, and Bluetooth arrangement vary by display model, so use the screen’s manual for controls that are not shown on your unit.

First, identify the audio route
Look in the portable display’s audio, sound, output, or transmitter menu and in its model-specific manual. Confirm which of these paths your unit actually supports:

- AUX: a cable carries audio from the display to the vehicle stereo’s 3.5 mm input. Both ends must have compatible AUX ports.
- FM transmitter: the display broadcasts on a selected FM frequency, and the car radio receives that same frequency.
- Bluetooth: the display, iPhone, and/or vehicle stereo are paired in the arrangement specified by the display and vehicle manuals.
Do not assume that two screens with similar CarPlay interfaces have the same speaker, AUX, FM, or Bluetooth features. If the manual does not list a route, do not spend time changing settings that your hardware cannot use.

Use this order for the initial checks
- Stop playback and start a known-good source. Play a song or a spoken track that normally produces sound. A single muted app can make a working route appear faulty.
- Raise volume at every point. Increase the portable screen’s volume, the iPhone’s volume, and the car stereo’s volume. Check each mute button and any do-not-disturb or silent setting that affects audio.
- Confirm the selected destination. On the iPhone or display, open the audio-output selector and choose the intended screen, vehicle, or Bluetooth device. On the stereo, select AUX or the FM frequency when those routes are in use.
- Restart the display and stereo. Power the portable screen off and on, then restart the vehicle stereo. This clears temporary audio-routing states without erasing saved settings.
- Test another app. If one music or navigation app is silent while another plays, the connection may be working and the problem may be app-specific.
If sound returns after one of these checks, note which setting changed. That tells you whether the fault was a muted control, an incorrect destination, or a temporary connection state.
Fix sound from the portable screen’s own speaker
Choose this path only when the display is meant to play audio through an integrated speaker. In the screen’s sound menu, verify that the internal speaker is enabled and that no external output mode is selected. Raise the screen’s volume and play a known-good track.
Laser Corporation’s NAVC-BHUDH156 support guide recommends testing known-good audio and restarting the screen when its own speakers remain silent. That guide also describes a USB-MP3 test, but that test is specific to the NAVC-BHUDH156 and should not be treated as a universal procedure for every portable display.

If the speaker is still silent
- Disconnect any AUX cable and temporarily disable FM transmission or Bluetooth output, if the display offers those controls. A selected external route can prevent the internal speaker from being used.
- Check whether the screen shows a headphone, AUX, Bluetooth, or transmitter icon. Such an icon can indicate that audio is being sent elsewhere.
- Try a second known-good source. If every source is silent after a restart and the internal-speaker option is enabled, consult the manufacturer before opening the unit or performing a reset.
Restore audio through an AUX cable
AUX is a direct wired path: the portable display sends analog audio through its output jack to the car stereo’s AUX input. It works only when both devices provide compatible ports and the stereo is switched to that input.
- Insert the cable fully into the display’s audio output and the stereo’s AUX input. A partially seated plug can leave the interface working while audio remains absent.
- On the car stereo, select the source labeled AUX, Line In, or the equivalent input named in the vehicle manual.
- Start known-good audio and raise volume on the screen, iPhone, and stereo. Some stereos retain a separate volume level for AUX.
- Test the same cable with another audio device and the car stereo. If that device is also silent, inspect the stereo input. If the fault follows the cable, try a replacement 3.5 mm AUX cable.
- Keep the cable connected while changing only one variable at a time. This makes it clear whether the failure is the plug, the cable, the display output, or the stereo input.
Laser Corporation’s 2024 guidance for the NAVC-BHUDH156 specifically calls for checking both connections, selecting AUX on the stereo, testing the cable with another device, and trying another cable when necessary. Those instructions apply directly to that model; other screens may label ports or outputs differently.
What an AUX test can and cannot prove
- A working second device on the car’s AUX input points toward the portable screen, its output setting, or its cable connection.
- A different cable that restores sound points toward the original cable rather than CarPlay itself.
- AUX cannot fix a muted screen, a wrong audio destination, an incompatible port, or a stereo that is still set to another source.
Restore audio through the FM transmitter
An FM transmitter sends the screen’s audio over a radio frequency. The car radio must be tuned to exactly the same frequency, and that frequency must be clear enough at your location.

- Open the display’s FM-transmitter setting and note its selected frequency.
- On the car radio, tune manually to that same frequency. Laser Corporation’s NAVC-BHUDH156 troubleshooting instruction is:
Check that the FM frequency on both the portable screen and the car stereo are the same.
The wording is a device-support instruction, not a universal frequency recommendation. - Play known-good audio and raise the display, iPhone, and radio volume. Confirm that the radio is not muted.
- If the matched frequency has static, another station, or no usable audio, choose a different clear frequency on the display and tune the radio to the new value.
- After changing frequencies, restart the display and stereo if the radio remains silent or stuck on the previous source.
There is no single FM frequency that works everywhere. A frequency that is clear in one parking area may be occupied or noisy elsewhere. Do not keep increasing volume to overcome interference; select another clear frequency instead.

FM symptoms and likely causes
| Symptom | Most useful check |
|---|---|
| Radio plays a station instead of CarPlay audio | Confirm the radio and display show the identical transmitter frequency. |
| Static or crackling | Move to another clear frequency and retune both devices. |
| No sound but the frequency matches | Check mute and volume, restart the display and stereo, and verify that FM transmission is enabled. |
| Sound is heard only on the display | Check whether the display is still set to its internal speaker rather than FM output. |
Restore audio through Bluetooth
Bluetooth routing differs substantially among portable displays. Some pair the iPhone to the display and the display to the car stereo; others use the car’s Bluetooth for audio while the portable screen handles only the CarPlay interface. Follow the pairing arrangement shown in both manuals rather than inventing a new chain.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the iPhone, portable screen, and vehicle stereo. Confirm that the intended devices are paired and connected, not merely saved as previously paired.
- In the iPhone’s audio-output selector, choose the device that is supposed to play sound. A connection can remain active for calls while media audio is directed elsewhere.
- Check the stereo’s source and Bluetooth-media setting. Some vehicles require selecting Bluetooth Audio separately after pairing.
- Temporarily disconnect unrelated Bluetooth headphones, speakers, or second phones. They can capture the media output.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on, then reconnect the intended devices. If the display or stereo manual requires deleting and re-adding a pairing, follow that procedure exactly.
Apple’s connection guidance covers supported CarPlay setups, Bluetooth pairing, software checks, restarts, and trying another audio app. It also advises checking the vehicle manual for Bluetooth pairing steps. See Apple’s iPhone-to-car connection guidance for the supported-connection steps.

When Bluetooth and CarPlay compete
If the vehicle has its own Bluetooth connection while the portable display also uses Bluetooth, the two links may compete for media audio. Test with only the pairing arrangement required by the display manual. If removing the vehicle’s separate media connection restores sound, reconfigure the system so one device is the designated audio destination; do not leave both arrangements active unless the manuals explicitly support them.
Check the CarPlay connection itself
When every output route is silent, determine whether the failure is audio routing or the underlying CarPlay connection. Apple recommends checking that the iPhone and vehicle support CarPlay, installing current software, restarting the iPhone and vehicle, checking the physical or wireless connection, and trying another audio app. Those steps apply to supported iPhone-and-vehicle connections; a portable display can add its own output settings on top.

- For a wired setup, try another compatible cable and another available USB port where the display or vehicle provides one. Inspect connectors for looseness or damage.
- For a wireless setup, verify that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on the iPhone and that the required CarPlay pairing remains present.
- Restart the iPhone, portable display, and vehicle stereo. Reconnect only after all three have finished starting.
- Play audio from a second app. If one app fails while another works, update or troubleshoot that app rather than changing the hardware route first.
Wireless CarPlay checks that depend on the vehicle
Vehicle manuals can document additional conditions that are not universal to portable screens. For example, the 2025 Ford Expedition owner’s manual lists checking Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, restarting the iPhone, re-pairing the phone, and disabling Personal Hotspot in some wireless CarPlay troubleshooting scenarios. Use those steps only when they match your vehicle and connection type; a different vehicle may require different menus.

Disabling Personal Hotspot is not a general cure for every silent screen. Treat it as a vehicle-specific diagnostic step, then restore your preferred setting if it was not the cause.
Rule out an audio-source conflict
Missing sound can be caused by another source taking control rather than by a broken speaker or transmitter. The 2024 Toyota Highlander interactive manual describes cases in which audio from an app that is not compatible with CarPlay interrupts playback or prevents a return to the previous audio source. That behavior is vehicle-specific and should not be generalized to every portable display.
- Stop audio in apps running outside CarPlay, then start a CarPlay-compatible audio app.
- Use the vehicle’s source menu to return explicitly to AUX, Bluetooth Audio, or the FM frequency used by the display.
- If sound returns only after closing a particular app, update that app and check the vehicle manual for its compatibility notes.
Compare the available output routes
If your display supports several routes, choose the one that fits the vehicle rather than assuming one is inherently best. The sources available for portable screens do not establish universal sound-quality or latency rankings.
| Route | Vehicle requirement | Setup complexity | Common failure point | Where sound plays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in speaker | No vehicle input required | Lowest, if enabled on the display | Muted or disabled internal speaker | Portable screen only |
| AUX | Compatible AUX input and cable | Low after cabling | Loose plug, wrong stereo source, damaged cable | Vehicle speakers |
| FM transmitter | FM radio | Moderate; both frequencies must match | Interference or mismatched frequency | Vehicle speakers through the radio |
| Bluetooth | Supported Bluetooth pairing arrangement | Variable; depends on devices | Wrong audio destination or competing pairing | Usually vehicle speakers when the stereo is the destination |
Use a decision path instead of changing everything at once
- Does the display itself produce sound? If no, test the internal-speaker setting, volume, mute, and a known-good source. If yes, CarPlay audio exists and the external route is the next suspect.
- Is AUX selected and firmly connected? If no, correct the cable and stereo source. If yes, test the cable with another device.
- Does FM produce the display audio on a matched frequency? If no, select a clear frequency, retune both devices, and restart them.
- Is the intended Bluetooth device the active media destination? If no, select it and remove competing connections temporarily.
- Do all routes fail with every app? Follow Apple’s supported-connection checks, then consult the portable-screen and vehicle manuals for model-specific service steps.
Reset only after the routing checks
A restart is a reversible troubleshooting step. A factory reset is not. Use a factory reset only when the screen’s manual directs it or manufacturer support recommends it, and record Bluetooth pairings, FM settings, and other preferences first. Laser Corporation warns that a factory reset of its device can erase settings; other models may have different consequences.
If the screen remains silent after a known-good source, correct volume, a confirmed output route, and the relevant cable, frequency, or pairing tests, contact the display manufacturer or vehicle manufacturer with the exact model, connection type, and steps that failed. Do not assume that replacing an AUX cable will fix an FM mismatch or a Bluetooth destination problem.
