They have different installation, support and risk profiles. Official Rambler requires a current Gboard set as the default keyboard, microphone permission for Gboard and an internet connection for its full feature set. PixelBoard requires installing or patching a modified keyboard APK, enabling it in Android’s keyboard settings, selecting it as the active input method and then choosing Rambler in the keyboard’s voice-typing settings. Installing an APK alone does not finish setup.
If Rambler does not show words while you are speaking, that is normally expected: speak, tap Done, and wait for the submitted audio to be processed. Use the sequence below to separate an incomplete setup from a permission, connectivity, crash or compatibility problem.

Identify the Rambler installation you have
Community posts use “PixelBoard,” “Rambler,” “not activated” and “not transcribing” interchangeably, but the first diagnostic question is which product is actually on the phone.
Official Rambler in Gboard
Google’s Pixel Phone Help documents Rambler for Pixel 11 series devices. The supported arrangement is the latest Gboard release selected as the default keyboard, with Gboard allowed to use the microphone. Full Rambler processing needs internet access; a limited set of cleanup functions remains available offline.

PixelBoard, the unofficial port
PixelBoard is a modified Gboard APK or a patched stock Gboard APK intended to bring Rambler-like functionality to devices outside the documented Pixel 11 support. It is not an official Google app. Its README describes two routes: install the project’s stable APK, or patch a stock Gboard APK with the project’s patch bundle. In either case, Android still requires you to enable the newly installed keyboard and select it as the active input method.

If you cannot identify the package, open a text field and inspect the keyboard currently displayed. The name shown in Android’s available-keyboard list is more useful than the name of an APK file you downloaded.
Before changing anything: security and data cautions
Sideloading or patching a keyboard gives that software a privileged position: a keyboard can receive what you type and can request microphone access for voice input. Android Central has reported security and privacy risks associated with modified APKs, and a future Gboard or server-side update could disable a workaround without warning. Do not treat a failed installation message as proof of malware, incompatibility or a Google block; the available documentation does not establish any of those diagnoses.
Use a release from the PixelBoard project documentation, verify that the file and method match your device, and avoid random mirrors. Keep a second keyboard enabled so you can recover if the port will not open. Before clearing app data or uninstalling, note that those actions can erase the keyboard’s saved data and settings. Start with reversible checks.
Repair official Rambler on a supported Pixel
1. Confirm that Gboard is the active, current keyboard
- Open any app with a text field.
- Display the keyboard and confirm that Gboard is the input method in use. If Android offers a keyboard switcher, choose Gboard.
- Check for a Gboard update and install the current release available for your phone. Rambler’s documented requirements assume the latest Gboard is installed.
- Return to the system’s on-screen-keyboard settings and make Gboard the default keyboard if another keyboard has taken over.
An APK or update that is installed but not selected cannot provide Rambler. If the keyboard switcher repeatedly returns to another input method, disable that competing keyboard temporarily and repeat the selection.

2. Select Rambler inside Gboard
- Open Gboard’s settings from the keyboard toolbar, or from the system keyboard settings.
- Choose Voice typing.
- Select Rambler.
If Rambler is absent, first verify that Gboard—not another keyboard—is open and that the current Gboard release finished updating. The documented material does not provide one universal fix for every missing-option state, so do not assume that reinstalling unrelated apps will restore the menu.
3. Grant the required microphone permission
- Open Android’s app-permission page for Gboard.
- Set Microphone to Allow only while using the app, the permission mode specified by Google for Rambler.
- Close and reopen the text field, then test voice input again.
Check the permission for the keyboard package that is actually active. Granting microphone access to a different keyboard does not authorize Gboard.
4. Test the network before judging transcription
Rambler’s full features require internet access. Test with a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection, and temporarily disable a VPN, captive-portal connection or data restriction if one prevents the keyboard from reaching its service. A network test should be performed while the same keyboard and account configuration are active; browsing successfully in another app does not prove that the keyboard can complete its request.
Google says that basic cleanup, punctuation and capitalization remain available offline. Advanced rewriting and conversational editing are not expected to work without connectivity. If the connection drops after you speak, Google says a Retry button appears so the input can be processed offline where supported.
5. Submit the recording correctly
Rambler is not designed to display a live, word-by-word transcript during capture. Tap the microphone control, speak, tap Done, and wait for the result to be inserted into the text field. Treating the absence of live text as a failure leads to unnecessary reinstalls. If no text appears after submission, continue with the permission, network and crash checks rather than repeatedly tapping the microphone.

Install and activate the PixelBoard port
PixelBoard’s release files and sizes can change. Follow the project page for the current stable APK or patch bundle instead of relying on an old filename or version number. The sequence below reflects the project’s documented setup while keeping mutable release details out of the instructions.

- Stable APK: install the project-provided PixelBoard APK that matches your Android environment.
- Patch bundle: start with the stock Gboard APK specified by the project, apply the project’s patch bundle exactly as documented, then install the resulting package.
Do not mix a patch intended for one release with a different stock APK. If Android rejects the package, stop and check the project’s release notes, Android-version requirements and signing instructions before trying another file.
2. Enable PixelBoard as an input method
- Open Android’s system settings for on-screen or virtual keyboards.
- Open the list of available keyboards.
- Enable PixelBoard and acknowledge Android’s warning about enabling a third-party input method.
- Open a text field, use the keyboard switcher and select PixelBoard as the active keyboard.
These are separate actions. A successful package installation does not automatically enable or select PixelBoard. If PixelBoard is missing from the available-keyboard list, the package may not have installed correctly, its release may not support the phone, or Android may have blocked the installation; consult the project’s release-specific instructions rather than guessing.
3. Choose Rambler in PixelBoard’s voice-typing settings
- Open PixelBoard’s keyboard settings.
- Find the Voice typing section.
- Select Rambler.
- Return to a text field and confirm that PixelBoard remains the active keyboard.
If the Rambler option is missing, check the active keyboard first. Then verify whether you installed the stable APK or used the patch route and whether that release documents Rambler for your Android version. The project materials do not establish a single repair for every missing-option state.
4. Grant microphone access to the port
Open Android’s permission page for the PixelBoard package and allow microphone use while the app is in use. If you used a patched package with a different application identity, grant the permission to that installed identity—not to stock Gboard or an older PixelBoard entry. Reopen the keyboard after changing the permission.

5. Test capture and insertion
Speak a short sentence, tap Done and wait. Do not expect live words to appear during capture. If the port offers a retry control after a failed network request, use it only after confirming that the keyboard has microphone access and a working connection.

Safe general recovery for crashes and stuck keyboards
Google’s general Pixel app guidance recommends a conservative sequence for an app that crashes or will not open:
- Restart the phone.
- Install available system and keyboard updates.
- Force-stop the affected keyboard from its app-information page, then reopen a text field.
- Clear the app’s cache and test again.
- Only after recording your settings and understanding the consequences, consider clearing app data or uninstalling and reinstalling.
Clearing data or uninstalling can erase saved keyboard data and preferences. On a port, it can also remove the modified package you need to reproduce the setup. Keep your fallback keyboard enabled before taking either action. If only one ordinary app fails to accept input while the keyboard works elsewhere, Google’s guidance is to contact that app’s developer; the fault may be in the app’s text field rather than Rambler.
Choose the right route instead of forcing the port
Use the official route when you have a Pixel 11 series device and can meet Google’s documented requirements. It has the clearest eligibility, update and support path. Consider PixelBoard only when you understand that it is an unofficial modification, can verify the project release and are willing to troubleshoot compatibility yourself.

Privacy and data handling
Google’s Pixel Phone Help states: “When you use Rambler, your text, audio input, and your corrections to voice output will be temporarily processed by Google.” Google also says that this information is not saved, stored or shared and is deleted after delivery. That statement describes Google’s official Rambler service; it should not be treated as a guarantee about an unofficial modified package.
A keyboard port changes the trust boundary because you are installing software outside the standard supported path. Review the project’s code, release provenance and permissions as far as you can, and avoid entering sensitive information until you are comfortable with the package. Keep an alternative keyboard available for recovery.
When to stop troubleshooting and ask for help
Official Rambler
If the phone is a supported Pixel 11 series model and you have confirmed the current default Gboard, Rambler selection, microphone permission and network, use Google’s support options. Include the phone model, Android version, Gboard version, whether the failure occurs online or offline, and whether text appears after tapping Done. If only one app is affected, contact that app’s developer as Google recommends.
PixelBoard
Contact the project maintainer when the failure is confined to PixelBoard and you have followed the release-specific instructions. Provide the Android version, device model, installation route (stable APK or patch bundle), project release identifier, whether PixelBoard is enabled and selected, the exact permission state, and the complete error message. Do not send passwords, private recordings or other sensitive data in a bug report.

Compatibility and continued operation of a port are not guaranteed. If a documented release no longer installs after an operating-system or Gboard update, reverting to the official keyboard may be the safest practical resolution.
