The receiving computer, tablet, TV, car, or other device must support USB Video Class (UVC). If the host is another Pixel, the setup is not supported; Pixel devices do not accept a Pixel phone as a UVC camera in that scenario.
When those requirements are met, work from the cable outward: confirm that the phone offers Webcam mode, confirm that the host enumerates a UVC camera, and only then troubleshoot the individual video application. This order separates a physical connection problem from a host-compatibility problem and from an app-selection problem.

What “not detected” can mean
A Pixel can appear connected while still failing as a webcam for several different reasons. The phone may be using a charge-only cable, may still be set to charging or file transfer, or may not be showing the USB-use notification at all. The phone can also be configured correctly while the receiving device lacks UVC support. Finally, the host may see a UVC camera even though the video application is using a different camera or has no permission to open the Pixel.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
- Phone connection: the Pixel shows a USB notification after it is unlocked and connected.
- USB function: the notification offers Webcam, and that function is selected.
- Host enumeration: the receiving device recognizes a UVC camera.
- Application selection: the video app chooses the Pixel or Android webcam rather than another camera.
Google’s Pixel Camera Help states: “You can use your Pixel phone as a webcam with a USB cable that supports data.” That sentence describes the essential physical prerequisite, not a guarantee that every host or application supports the resulting camera.
Requirements to verify before changing settings
| Requirement | What must be true | What failure looks like |
|---|---|---|
| USB cable | A known-good USB-C cable explicitly rated for data transfer, not merely charging | The Pixel charges but never exposes the documented USB choices or Webcam mode |
| Phone software | Android platform documentation describes device-as-webcam support for Android 14 QPR1 and higher | The Webcam option may be unavailable on an older or unsupported software build |
| Receiving device | The computer, tablet, TV, car, or other host implements USB Video Class (UVC) | The host does not enumerate the Pixel as a camera even when the phone is in Webcam mode |
| Host type | The receiving device is not another Pixel for this use case | A Pixel-to-Pixel webcam connection is blocked by the documented Pixel UVC-camera limitation |
| Application | The video application can open a UVC camera and has the Pixel selected | The host sees a camera, but the application shows no Pixel feed |
Android 14 QPR1 is a version reference from Android’s platform documentation, not a promise that every Pixel model, carrier build, or host exposes identical controls. If the phone is on an older release, install available system updates before treating a missing Webcam entry as a hardware fault.
Follow the complete fix in order
1. Replace the cable with a verified USB-C data cable
A charge-only cable can deliver power while carrying no USB data. That produces the most common misleading symptom: the battery icon shows charging, but there is no usable camera connection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Disconnect the Pixel from the receiving device.
- Use a USB-C cable whose specifications explicitly include data transfer. A cable supplied only as a charging lead is not sufficient.
- Reconnect the phone directly to the host, avoiding an unverified hub or adapter during this first test.
- Unlock the Pixel and wait for the USB notification.
A successful cable check does not yet make the phone a webcam; it only proves that the USB data path can be negotiated. If the phone still provides power but no USB notification after a direct reconnection, try another known-good data cable before changing application settings.
2. Select Webcam in the Pixel’s USB controls
After a data-capable connection is established, tap the notification labeled Charging this device through USB. Under Use USB for, select Webcam. Do not leave the function set to charging, file transfer, MIDI, or another USB mode.
The phone must be unlocked while you look for this control. If the notification is not visible, unplug and reconnect the cable with the screen unlocked, then check the phone’s USB settings. The exact placement of USB settings can vary by Android build, but the required choice is still the USB function named Webcam.

Once Webcam is selected, leave the phone connected and give the host time to enumerate the new UVC device. Repeatedly changing between file transfer and charging can make it difficult to tell which state the host is testing, so select Webcam once and then check the host.
3. Confirm that the receiving device supports UVC
USB Video Class is the standard interface the host uses to recognize a USB camera. Google’s procedure requires the receiving device to implement UVC. A host can supply power and establish a USB connection yet still lack the camera class support needed to use the Pixel as a webcam.
Check the specifications or support documentation for the actual receiving device: this may be a computer, tablet, television, car system, or another specialized host. “Has a USB port” is not the same as “supports UVC cameras.” If the device does not implement UVC, no phone-side setting can make it enumerate the Pixel as a camera.
For diagnosis, use a second host known to accept UVC cameras if one is available. This is a comparison test, not a requirement to buy another device: if the Pixel appears there, the original host is the likely compatibility boundary; if it fails in both places, return to the cable, USB-function, and software checks.
4. Separate host detection from application selection
Do not conclude that the Pixel is undetected solely because a video application opens to a blank preview. First determine whether the host itself sees a UVC camera. The official Pixel guidance establishes the UVC connection, but it does not define the menu names used by every third-party application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the host recognizes a UVC camera, open the application’s camera settings and choose the Pixel or Android webcam device. Close other applications that may already be holding the camera, then reopen the application if necessary. The relevant label can differ by application, so look for the camera-device selector rather than for a universal menu name.

If the host has no camera entry at all, application changes cannot solve the problem. Return to the host-UVC check and the phone-side USB function instead of reinstalling the application.
5. Check the Pixel-to-Pixel restriction
Pixel devices do not support using one Pixel phone as a webcam for another Pixel device because Pixel devices do not support UVC cameras for that scenario. If the receiving device is another Pixel, the lack of detection is an expected platform limitation rather than a bad cable or a hidden setting. Use a different UVC-capable host for the USB-webcam setup.
6. Recover from a connection that became stuck
Google Issue 334091555 records a failure in which enabling Webcam mode disconnected USB and the mode would not work again until the phone was rebooted. The issue is marked Fixed, but the recovery sequence remains useful when a previously working configuration suddenly stops responding.
- Disconnect the cable.
- Reboot the Pixel.
- Install current system updates that are offered for the phone.
- Reconnect with the phone unlocked and a verified USB-C data cable.
- Open Charging this device through USB and select Webcam again.
Rebooting clears a stuck USB state; updating reduces the chance that an already-fixed software defect is still present on the device. If the same failure returns after this sequence, record the phone’s Android build, the host model, the cable used, and whether the host ever enumerates a UVC camera before seeking device-specific support.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| Observed symptom | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The Pixel only charges | The cable may be charge-only, or the USB function has not been changed from charging | Reconnect an explicitly data-rated USB-C cable with the phone unlocked, then choose Webcam in the USB notification |
| No USB notification appears | The data connection has not been established or the phone is locked while the connection is negotiated | Unplug and reconnect directly, unlock the phone, and check USB settings |
| Webcam is not listed under Use USB for | The software build may not expose the documented function, or the USB state is stuck | Check the Android version context, install available updates, and reboot before retrying |
| Webcam is selected, but the host has no camera | The host may not implement UVC, or the connection still lacks a working data path | Verify UVC support and repeat the cable test; test with another UVC-capable host when possible |
| The host sees a camera, but the video app does not | The problem is at the application-selection layer, not basic USB enumeration | Select the Pixel/Android webcam in the app and close other applications using cameras |
| The receiving device is another Pixel | The documented Pixel-to-Pixel UVC-camera restriction applies | Use a different receiving device that supports UVC |
| Webcam worked until a USB disconnect | A stuck software configuration is possible; Google has recorded and marked a related issue Fixed | Reboot, update the Pixel, reconnect, and select Webcam again |
Why a data cable matters more than charging behavior
USB power negotiation and USB data communication are separate capabilities. A phone can charge normally through a cable that has no usable data conductors, so the presence of a charging animation is not evidence that a webcam connection is possible. The documented procedure depends on the host and phone exchanging USB information before the Webcam function can be selected.
When comparing cables, look for an explicit data-transfer specification rather than relying on connector shape. Two USB-C cables can look identical while offering different capabilities. Keep the cable test simple: connect the Pixel directly to the host, unlock it, and check whether the USB notification appears. Add hubs, docks, or adapters only after the direct connection works.

How Android version affects the Webcam option
Android’s platform documentation describes device-as-webcam support for Android 14 QPR1 and higher. That establishes the software context for the feature, but it does not identify a universal menu layout for every Pixel release. A missing Webcam entry should therefore be investigated in this order:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

- Repeat the connection with a verified data cable and the phone unlocked.
- Look for Charging this device through USB and inspect Use USB for.
- Reboot if the USB function previously disconnected or behaved inconsistently.
Do not infer a host failure from a phone that never offers Webcam, and do not infer a phone failure from a host that lacks UVC. The version check and the host check answer different questions.
When a hub or adapter is involved
A hub or adapter can add another compatibility boundary. The receiving device still needs UVC support, and the adapter path must carry USB data rather than power only. For the clearest diagnosis, remove the accessory and test the Pixel-to-host connection directly with the data cable. If the direct path works but the hub path fails, verify that the specific hub or adapter passes UVC devices; compatibility is not established merely because it provides a USB socket.
Use an accessory only when the host’s physical ports require it. Keep the phone-side checks unchanged: unlock the Pixel, select Webcam, and confirm that the host—not just the application—enumerates the camera.
A clean verification checklist
- Use a USB-C cable explicitly rated for data transfer.
- Connect the Pixel directly for the first test.
- Unlock the phone before checking USB controls.
- Open Charging this device through USB.
- Select Webcam under Use USB for.
- Confirm that the receiving device supports USB Video Class.
- Exclude another Pixel as the receiving device for this use case.
- Check host-level camera detection before changing application settings.
- Select the Pixel/Android webcam in the video app if the host already sees it.
- After a stuck disconnect, reboot and install current system updates before retrying.
Following the checks in this order identifies the failing layer without guessing: cable and USB mode first, host UVC support second, and application camera selection last.
