How to fix a PC controller that isn’t detected or working in games

First determine where the failure occurs: the controller’s physical or wireless connection, Windows detection and drivers, or the game and launcher. Connect or pair the controller, then check whether Windows sees it before changing in-game settings. If Windows cannot see it, repair USB, Bluetooth, power, pairing, or drivers. If Windows sees it but one game does not, focus on that game’s supported input mode and launcher configuration.

Start with the Windows-versus-game test

A controller can be powered yet unusable because its data connection is failing, Windows has not enumerated it, a Bluetooth adapter is malfunctioning, or a game does not accept that controller’s input protocol. Microsoft describes the first symptom as “The device isn’t detected when you connect it.” (Microsoft Support.)

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Connect the controller by USB or pair it over Bluetooth.
  2. Check whether Windows reacts to the connection and whether the device appears in Device Manager or the controller settings for your launcher.
  3. Try the same controller in another game or another PC if available.

Use the result to choose the correct branch:

What you observe Most likely fault domain Next step
Windows shows no new device Power, cable, USB port, Bluetooth pairing, adapter, or driver Work through the wired or Bluetooth connection checks below.
Windows detects it, but no game responds Input mode, game support, launcher mapping, or overlay Check the game and launcher configuration.
It works in some games but not one title That game, its launcher, anti-cheat, or controller compatibility Do not replace the controller yet; investigate the failing title.
It disconnects intermittently Loose cable, USB contention, wireless range, charge level, or driver Test another port, cable, location, or driver state.

Interpret the exact symptom

A controller that never appears in Windows is a connection or device-layer problem. One that appears and then disappears points toward a loose cable, unstable USB port, depleted battery, wireless range, interference, or driver. A controller that Windows sees but a single game ignores has crossed the Windows boundary successfully; changing Bluetooth drivers or buying another cable is unlikely to fix that particular title. A useful test is to note whether buttons register in another game or in the launcher’s controller page, then change only one variable at a time.

Checks that apply to every controller

Confirm power and reset the connection

  • Charge the controller or install fresh batteries. A status light does not prove that the data link is working.
  • Turn the controller off, wait several seconds, and turn it on again.
  • Disconnect it from other PCs, consoles, phones, or receivers that might reconnect automatically.
  • Restart Windows before changing drivers or game settings.
  • Keep the controller close to the PC during the first pairing or recognition test, then test normal playing distance afterward.

For wireless devices, Microsoft recommends checking charge, range, Bluetooth availability, and restarting the Bluetooth device (Pair a Bluetooth device in Windows). If the controller has separate wired, wireless-receiver, and Bluetooth modes, verify that the selected mode matches the connection you are testing. A controller can be connected to USB for charging while still remaining in a different wireless mode.

Fix a wired USB controller Windows does not detect

Use a direct connection and another port

  1. Disconnect the controller.
  2. Plug it directly into the PC rather than through a hub, monitor, keyboard, or docking station.
  3. Try a different USB port. On a desktop, test both front and rear ports; on a laptop, test ports on the opposite side if available.
  4. Watch for a Windows notification or sound, then open Device Manager and look for a newly added device or a device with a warning icon.

Direct connection removes a hub or dock as a variable. If the controller works in one port but not another, leave it in the working port while you investigate; do not assume that every port supplies identical power or behaves identically with every peripheral. Valve notes that USB behavior can vary with port choice and other connected devices, including intermittent disconnects. Its guidance is a troubleshooting check, not a guarantee that every controller will behave the same way (Troubleshooting USB Connection and Contention Issues).

Inspect Device Manager and the error code

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand categories such as Human Interface Devices, Sound, video and game controllers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Find the controller or an Unknown device with a yellow warning icon.
  4. Right-click it, choose Properties, and read Device status on the General tab.

Microsoft says a “USB device not recognized” notification can mean that the device reported a problem or that its driver has a problem. Microsoft’s USB-C guidance also uses the wording, “The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.” (Fix USB-C problems in Windows.) Record the displayed error code before searching for a model-specific fix; different codes point to different causes. If nothing changes in Device Manager when you plug in or unplug the controller, suspect the cable, port, power, or controller before trying game settings.

Do not assume every USB cable carries data

A cable can provide power while lacking the wires needed for data. Connector shapes also vary by controller model. Use the controller maker’s specified data-capable cable and verify the exact connector before buying a replacement. A charging-only cable will not make Windows enumerate the controller, even if its lights turn on. Do not buy a cable solely because its plug fits; confirm that it is intended for data and for that controller’s connector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate a controller fault from a PC fault

  • If the controller works through USB on another computer, inspect the original PC’s ports, chipset or USB drivers, and connected peripherals.
  • If another known-good controller also fails on the same ports, the PC or its USB subsystem is more likely at fault.
  • If the controller fails everywhere with a known-good data cable, suspect the controller or cable rather than the game.
  • If it works by USB but not through a wireless receiver, test the receiver and its USB port separately; do not treat a successful wired test as proof that every wireless path is healthy.

Fix a Bluetooth controller that will not pair or connect

Check Bluetooth hardware and the correct Windows page

The PC must have a working Bluetooth radio, and the controller itself must support Bluetooth. In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices. Turn Bluetooth on, keep the controller close, and place the controller in its model-specific pairing mode. Button combinations differ by model, so use that controller’s manual rather than applying a sequence from another device.

  1. Open the Bluetooth settings page for your Windows version.
  2. Choose Add device, then select Bluetooth.
  3. Select the controller when it appears.
  4. If it is listed but will not connect, remove it from the saved devices list, power-cycle the controller, and pair it again.

Microsoft’s pairing steps are documented at Pair a Bluetooth device in Windows. If the controller never appears, verify pairing mode, charge, distance, and whether another device has already claimed the controller. If it appears but fails at connection, removing the old pairing record and pairing again is a cleaner test than repeatedly clicking Connect.

When Bluetooth is missing or disabled

If the Bluetooth switch is absent or grayed out, Windows may not be detecting the PC’s Bluetooth radio. Check Device Manager for the Bluetooth category and for warning icons. Focus on the PC’s hardware, firmware, and driver rather than repeatedly searching for the controller. Microsoft recommends starting the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app for Windows 11 Bluetooth problems (Fix Bluetooth problems in Windows).

A PC without built-in Bluetooth can use a USB Bluetooth adapter for PC, but only when the controller supports Bluetooth and the adapter is compatible with the Windows version. This accessory adds Bluetooth; it does not repair a defective USB controller connection, replace a missing data cable, or make an unsupported game accept the controller. Check the adapter’s Windows compatibility and install instructions rather than assuming every adapter works automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce wireless interference while testing

Keep the controller close to the PC and temporarily move other wireless or USB devices. Microsoft notes that an unshielded USB device connected to USB 3.0 can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth. Treat moving nearby devices as a test for sluggish or unstable wireless behavior, not as proof of the cause. If moving a device changes the symptom, restore devices one at a time to identify which arrangement is reliable.

Repair the Bluetooth driver only when the wireless layer is the problem

Driver work is appropriate when Bluetooth is missing, the radio has a warning icon, pairing broke after an update, or multiple Bluetooth devices fail. It is not the first response to a game that ignores a controller Windows already detects.

Update through Windows or Device Manager

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth, right-click the PC’s Bluetooth adapter, and choose Update driver.
  3. Select the option to search automatically, then restart Windows if prompted.
  4. Also check Settings > Windows Update for available updates.

Device Manager can report that the best driver is already installed even when a newer package exists on the computer manufacturer’s support page. Use the manufacturer’s driver and firmware instructions for the exact PC model; avoid generic third-party driver-download sites. Microsoft’s supported options are described in Update Bluetooth drivers in Windows.

Reinstall or roll back after a change

  • In Device Manager, right-click the Bluetooth adapter and choose Uninstall device, then restart. Windows can reinstall the adapter during startup.
  • If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when that option is available.
  • After a reinstall or rollback, pair the controller again instead of assuming the previous pairing record remains valid.

Do not uninstall unrelated USB or system devices merely because the controller is not working in one game. Make the driver change at the layer showing the symptom, restart, and retest before making another change.

If Windows detects the controller but a game does not

Check the game’s supported input mode

Windows detection does not guarantee that every game accepts every controller protocol. Open the game’s own settings and look for Controller, Gamepad, Input, or Controls. Confirm that gamepad input is enabled and that the displayed prompts match the controller mode you are using. Some games require a controller to be connected before launch; close the game, connect the controller, and start the game again as a test.

Check whether the game is expecting a different input style, such as a controller mode supplied by the launcher rather than the device’s native mode. Avoid changing several mappings at once: first establish whether the game receives any button input, then adjust individual bindings. If the controller works in another title on the same PC, the hardware and Windows connection have already passed a useful test.

Check Steam only when Steam is part of the launch path

For a game launched through Steam, open Steam’s controller settings and verify that the controller appears there. Valve’s guidance for the 2015 Steam Controller says, “The Steam Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality,” and describes calibrating and testing input from Steam’s controller settings (Steam Controller (2015) – Unresponsive / strange input). Those instructions are specific to Steam Controller support and are not a requirement for every ordinary gamepad.

For current Steam Controller features and troubleshooting, consult Valve’s Steam Controller (2026) – Feature & Troubleshooting guide. Use the controller test or calibration options shown in your Steam version; menu names and available features can differ by device and release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand non-Steam and launcher limitations

When a non-Steam game is added to Steam, behavior can vary. Valve identifies possible incompatibilities involving anti-cheat systems, separate launchers that require administrator permissions, missing Steam Overlay support, or games that cannot be added to the Steam library. If the controller works in other games, prioritize this game-and-launcher branch rather than replacing the hardware.

  • Try launching the game directly from its own launcher and then through Steam, noting whether behavior changes.
  • Do not run the game and launcher at conflicting privilege levels; an elevated launcher may prevent an overlay or input layer from attaching normally.
  • Check whether anti-cheat or the game’s policy blocks remapping or overlay software. Follow the game publisher’s permitted configuration.
  • Close other remapping utilities temporarily so only one input layer is handling the controller.

Wired USB versus Bluetooth: choose the next test

Question Wired USB Bluetooth
What must be available? A controller-compatible, data-capable cable and a working USB port. A Bluetooth-capable controller and a working PC radio or compatible USB adapter.
First Windows check Device Manager, USB notification, another port, and cable. Bluetooth switch, pairing mode, range, saved-device record, and adapter status.
Useful isolation test Try the same cable and controller on another PC. Try another Bluetooth device on the PC or the controller on another Bluetooth-capable PC.
Common purchase mistake Buying a charging-only cable because it supplies power. Buying an adapter for a controller that does not support Bluetooth.

This comparison is not a claim that one connection is universally better. It identifies which hardware and Windows layer must be working before you investigate a game. If one method works and the other does not, use the working method to play while troubleshooting the failed path.

Use controlled tests to locate an intermittent failure

Change one variable at a time

Write down the result of each test: wired or Bluetooth, USB port, cable, Windows detection, launcher, and game. For example, if USB works but Bluetooth fails on the same PC, investigate the Bluetooth radio, pairing record, range, and driver. If Bluetooth works but USB fails, inspect the cable, port, and USB device status instead of changing game mappings.

Test the controller-versus-PC pattern

Test Result Interpretation
Same controller, another USB port Works only in one port Port, hub, contention, or power behavior is implicated.
Same controller, another PC Works elsewhere Original PC’s USB/Bluetooth hardware, drivers, or settings are implicated.
Different controller, same PC and game Both fail in one game Game or launcher support is more likely than a defective controller.
Same controller, another game Works elsewhere The failing game’s input mode, overlay, anti-cheat, or launcher is the likely boundary.

When a fault is intermittent, leave the controller untouched while testing a different port or game. If moving the cable or controller changes the result, note exactly what moved. Repeating the same test after a reboot can distinguish a temporary pairing or driver state from a repeatable hardware problem.

Windows version context

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That date is important for security and operating-system support, but it does not by itself prove that an older PC controller cannot work. Continue with the connection, detection, driver, and game tests above; then check whether the PC manufacturer provides current drivers and firmware for the installed Windows version. Do not treat upgrading Windows as a substitute for identifying whether the failure is USB, Bluetooth, or game-specific.

What not to do

  • Do not buy a Bluetooth adapter for a controller that does not support Bluetooth.
  • Do not assume a lit controller is transmitting data; power and data can fail independently.
  • Do not install unverified third-party driver utilities when the PC manufacturer and Microsoft provide supported driver paths.
  • Do not change game settings first when Windows does not detect the device.
  • Do not conclude that the controller is defective because one game ignores it while other games work.
  • Do not apply a pairing-button sequence from a different controller model.
  • Do not assume a Steam overlay or calibration step is required for every non-Steam gamepad.

A practical recovery order

  1. Charge or power-cycle the controller.
  2. For USB, use a known data-capable cable, connect directly, and test another port.
  3. For Bluetooth, confirm the PC has Bluetooth, enable it, enter the controller’s pairing mode, and pair again.
  4. Use Device Manager to inspect warning icons and device status; update, reinstall, or roll back the Bluetooth adapter only when the wireless layer indicates a driver problem.
  5. Once Windows detects the controller, test another game and inspect the failing game’s controller settings.
  6. If Steam is involved, verify the controller in Steam’s settings and account for overlay, anti-cheat, administrator, and separate-launcher limitations.
  7. Use another PC or controller to identify whether the fault follows the hardware or the computer.

This sequence keeps physical, Windows, and game-level failures separate, so each change addresses the layer that actually failed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my controller light up but Windows not detect it?

Power and data are separate. Try a known data-capable cable, connect directly to another USB port, and inspect Device Manager for an unknown device or warning icon. A charging-only cable can light the controller without carrying input data.

Do I need a Bluetooth adapter for a wireless PC controller?

Only if the PC lacks working built-in Bluetooth and the controller itself supports Bluetooth. A USB Bluetooth adapter adds the radio; it does not fix a USB cable, a non-Bluetooth controller, or a game that rejects the controller.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the controller work in Windows but not in one game?

The game may not support that controller’s input mode, or its launcher, anti-cheat, overlay, or administrator settings may block the input layer. Check the game’s controller settings, try another title, and compare launching directly with launching through Steam.

Should I update Bluetooth drivers when one game ignores my controller?

Usually no. Driver repair is appropriate when Bluetooth is missing, the adapter shows a warning, pairing fails, or multiple Bluetooth devices fail. If Windows consistently detects the controller, investigate the game or launcher first.

What should I do if Bluetooth is missing from Windows Settings?

Check whether the PC has Bluetooth and whether Device Manager lists a Bluetooth adapter. If the switch is absent or grayed out, Windows may not detect the radio; use the Windows 11 Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter and the PC manufacturer’s driver or firmware instructions.

Can a USB hub cause controller disconnects?

It can be a variable. Connect the controller directly to the PC and try another port. Valve notes that port choice and other connected devices can contribute to intermittent USB behavior, but this is a troubleshooting check rather than a universal diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Steam controller settings apply to every gamepad?

No. Valve’s overlay, calibration, and testing guidance cited for the 2015 Steam Controller is specific to Steam Controller support. Ordinary gamepads and non-Steam games can have different requirements.

Does Windows 10’s end-of-support date prevent older controllers from working?

No. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, but that date does not prove a controller is incompatible. Check the actual USB, Bluetooth, driver, and game behavior, along with current PC-manufacturer support.

The Bottom Line

First prove whether Windows detects the controller. If it does not, test power, the data cable, USB ports, Bluetooth pairing, range, interference, and the relevant driver. If Windows sees it, move to the game and launcher: input mode, Steam settings, overlays, anti-cheat, and administrator behavior can all determine whether a particular title responds.
