How to Fix a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller That Won’t Connect or Stay Connected

Most Nintendo Switch Pro Controller connection failures are pairing or setup problems, not immediate hardware defects. Confirm that you have the official HAC-013 controller, update and restart the console, reset the controller with a brief SYNC press, then pair it from Controllers > Change Grip and Order. Docked Switch, Switch OLED and Switch 2 consoles also let you test the controller over USB; Switch Lite requires a different wireless sequence and a licensed accessory for wired use.

First identify the controller and console

Check the controller model

Look beneath the Nintendo logo on the back of the controller. Every official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, including color and special-edition versions, is marked HAC-013. If the model number is different or absent, treat the pad as a third-party controller and use its manufacturer’s pairing and support instructions rather than Nintendo’s HAC-013 procedure.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This check prevents a common wrong turn: applying Nintendo’s instructions to a controller with different firmware, buttons or connection requirements. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is also a separate product. Nintendo says that controller is compatible only with Switch 2. It is not a replacement name for the HAC-013 model and should not be assumed to work with an original Switch, Switch OLED or Switch Lite.

Know which console branch applies

Console Wireless pairing USB or wired notes
Nintendo Switch Use the standard Change Grip and Order process. Dock USB pairing is available. Wired communication is enabled in System Settings > Controllers and Sensors.
Nintendo Switch OLED Use the standard Change Grip and Order process. Use the dock’s USB ports for testing and enable wired communication in System Settings > Controllers and Sensors.
Nintendo Switch 2 Use the standard Change Grip and Order process. Use the dock for USB testing and enable wired communication in System Settings > Controllers & Accessories.
Nintendo Switch Lite Use the Lite-specific disconnect and pairing sequence. The console has no docked USB pairing path. A licensed accessory such as the HORI Dual USB PlayStand can provide a wired connection.

The table is a decision point, not a comparison of controller quality. Switch, Switch OLED and Switch 2 can all use the dock’s USB ports for a diagnostic connection. Lite cannot duplicate that test without a suitable licensed accessory, so its reset and wireless-disconnect sequence matters more.

Before you start: make the test repeatable

Turn the console on and keep the HOME Menu available. If you are testing a docked model, leave the console powered on in its dock rather than testing with the dock disconnected. Have the controller’s USB charging cable available, and note whether it is the included HAC-010 cable or another compatible cable. A repeatable setup makes it easier to tell a pairing-state problem from a cable, dock or console problem.

During the first attempt, do not keep pressing or holding SYNC at random. Nintendo’s sequence uses two different SYNC actions: one brief press to reset and wake the controller, and a hold of at least one second while Change Grip and Order is open to begin pairing. Mixing those actions can make an otherwise recoverable controller appear unresponsive.

Run this recovery sequence in order

  1. Update the console. Open System Settings > System > System Update and install the latest available software. If the console reports that it is already current, hold the console’s POWER button for at least three seconds, choose Power Options, and select Restart. A restart is useful even when no update is available because it clears the current session before you try pairing again.
  2. Reset and wake the controller. Press the controller’s SYNC button once, then press another button, such as A. This brief press resets and wakes the controller. Do not hold SYNC during this step. The one-press reset is the correct starting point when the controller was previously paired, appears briefly, or seems to have stopped responding.
  3. Open the pairing screen. From the HOME Menu, choose Controllers > Change Grip and Order. Keep this screen open while initiating pairing; do not start by holding SYNC from an unrelated HOME Menu page.
  4. Pair wirelessly. While the Change Grip and Order screen is open, hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. Wait for the console to register the controller, then follow any on-screen confirmation. If nothing happens, repeat the brief SYNC-and-button reset once, return to Change Grip and Order, and try the one-second hold again.
  5. If the console is docked, test USB pairing. Leave the Switch, Switch OLED or Switch 2 powered on in its dock. Connect the Pro Controller to the dock with its USB charging cable and press a controller button. A successful connection identifies whether the wireless path is the problem. It also gives you a way to use the controller while you continue checking wireless pairing.
  6. On Switch Lite, use the separate sequence. Charge the controller. Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Disconnect Controllers, then hold X until the wireless controllers are disconnected. Press SYNC once and another button, open Controllers > Change Grip and Order, and hold SYNC for at least one second. This is not optional wording for Lite: the disconnect step is the console-specific path Nintendo provides.
  7. Escalate only after both connection methods fail. If an HAC-013 controller will not pair wirelessly or through USB on a docked console, or it still will not pair after the Switch Lite sequence, Nintendo directs you to service.

When wireless pairing works but the connection keeps dropping

Re-pair after a reset

A controller that appears briefly and then disappears can retain an incomplete pairing state. Use the one-press SYNC reset and wake step, then pair again from Change Grip and Order rather than repeatedly holding SYNC from the HOME Menu. The goal is to clear the old state first and then create one clean pairing attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After pairing, leave the controller connected at the HOME Menu for a short test before blaming a particular game. Then try a second game. If it remains stable in the HOME Menu and one game but not another, the game’s controller requirements may be relevant; if it drops everywhere, continue with the minimal-device and USB tests.

Reduce active wireless devices while testing

Nintendo states that up to eight wireless controllers can connect to Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch. That is a supported ceiling, not a guarantee that every combination will be usable. The practical maximum can be lower depending on controller type, special features and the game or software in use.

Bluetooth audio creates a specific limit: no more than two wireless controllers can connect while Bluetooth audio is connected. If you are trying to add a third wireless controller, disconnect Bluetooth audio first and then pair the Pro Controller again. This is a system capacity rule, not proof that Bluetooth audio caused every earlier dropout.

Some games also require Joy-Con controllers to be detached when the console is in handheld or tabletop mode. That is a software control requirement, not evidence that the Pro Controller is defective. Follow the game’s required controller arrangement before treating a refusal to join as a hardware fault.

Test with a simple configuration

  • Temporarily disconnect extra controllers and Bluetooth audio.
  • Return to Change Grip and Order and pair only the Pro Controller.
  • Try the controller in the same room as the console while troubleshooting.
  • Check whether the connection remains stable in a second game or in the HOME Menu.
  • Once the single-controller test is stable, add other controllers one at a time instead of reconnecting everything simultaneously.

The controller-count limits describe what the system supports; they do not prove that interference is the cause of an individual disconnection. Simplifying the setup is a diagnostic step that removes capacity and software variables.

Use USB pairing to separate wireless and hardware faults

Docked Switch, Switch OLED and Switch 2

Power the console on, place it in the dock and connect the Pro Controller to a dock USB port with a compatible charging cable. Press a controller button. If it does not pair, work through these checks in order:

  1. Press SYNC once, then press another controller button.
  2. Move the cable to another USB port on the same dock.
  3. Try a different known-good USB charging cable.
  4. If available, test with another compatible dock.

Change one item at a time. If another cable works in the same port, the original cable is suspect. If every cable fails in one port but works in another, the port is the useful clue. If the controller fails with multiple cables and docks as well as wirelessly, the problem is no longer just a single USB connection.

If USB pairing succeeds while wireless pairing fails, the controller is receiving power and communicating over USB. Continue with the wireless reset, the Change Grip and Order pairing screen, and the reduced-device test. USB success does not by itself repair Bluetooth pairing, and buying another cable is not a general fix for wireless dropouts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If neither USB nor wireless pairing works after the checks, Nintendo’s support path is service. Record which port, cable and dock you tried so support can distinguish a controller fault from an accessory-path fault.

Enable ongoing wired communication

Pairing over a cable and using the controller permanently as a wired controller are related but separate settings. On Switch 2, open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories. On Switch and Switch OLED, open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors. Enable Pro Controller Wired Communication.

Once enabled, keep the controller connected by USB when you want wired operation. Nintendo notes that enabling wired communication disables the controller’s NFC touchpoint. Turn the setting off if you need NFC functionality again. This setting is therefore a choice between the wired communication mode and NFC use, not a hidden performance upgrade for wireless pairing.

Switch Lite wired limitations

Switch Lite does not provide the same dock USB pairing route. Nintendo identifies a licensed accessory such as the HORI Dual USB PlayStand as a way to connect the Pro Controller by USB. Confirm that any accessory is currently licensed and compatible with your console before buying it; a replacement cable alone cannot create a USB port that the Lite does not have.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Lite, first complete the charge, Disconnect Controllers, hold-X, brief-SYNC reset and Change Grip and Order sequence. Use a licensed stand only when you specifically need the wired connection option. If the controller still will not pair after that sequence, Nintendo directs you to service rather than an unverified adapter or internal modification.

Check the cable, charger and charging state

Use the correct cable and power specification

The Pro Controller manual identifies the included cable as model HAC-010. It also allows charging with a compatible approved adapter supplying 5 V and 1.5 A (7.5 W). These figures describe the manual’s charging requirement; they do not mean every USB cable is guaranteed to carry data correctly.

A cable can fail even when the controller itself is healthy, so Nintendo specifically recommends trying another USB charging cable when dock USB pairing fails. Use a cable known to work for the test, connect it directly to a dock USB port on a powered console, and press a controller button after connecting.

Understand what a cable can and cannot fix

  • A different cable can resolve charging or USB data problems.
  • A different dock USB port can identify a port-specific fault.
  • A different dock can identify a dock-specific fault.
  • A cable replacement is not a general remedy for Bluetooth pairing or wireless dropouts.
  • For Switch Lite, a cable requires a suitable licensed accessory to connect to the console.

The manual says that connecting the cable to the console and turning the console on can pair the controller automatically. If that automatic pairing does not occur, use the USB checks above rather than assuming the battery is the only cause. A controller that charges but cannot communicate can still have a cable, port or controller-side data problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update the controller itself

Nintendo’s companion troubleshooting guidance lists the controller firmware path as System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers. Run the update when the console offers it. If the update stops before completion, retry it. Afterward, perform the brief SYNC reset and wake step and pair again from Change Grip and Order.

Menu wording can vary between console generations and system software. If your Switch 2 shows a Controllers & Accessories heading instead, use the corresponding controller-management area and follow the on-screen update option. Keep the console’s system software current first, because Nintendo’s support flow starts with the console update and restart.

Read the symptoms before deciding that the controller is broken

Symptom Most useful next check What the result means
The controller is not listed at all Update and restart the console, then reset and pair from Change Grip and Order. Failure after a clean pairing attempt may be a pairing-state or hardware issue.
The controller appears briefly, then disappears Press SYNC once, press another button, simplify the wireless setup and pair again. The old pairing state or a system-capacity condition may be involved.
Wireless pairing fails but USB pairing works Reset the controller and reduce other wireless devices, especially Bluetooth audio. The USB path is available; continue troubleshooting wireless pairing.
USB pairing fails Try SYNC once, another dock port, another cable and another dock. A cable, port or dock may be involved. Failure on both USB and wireless warrants service.
Connection drops only when several devices are connected Disconnect extras and Bluetooth audio, then test one controller. The system’s controller-capacity or software limits may be involved.
Switch Lite will not pair Use Disconnect Controllers, hold X, reset with SYNC once, then pair from Change Grip and Order. If the Lite sequence fails persistently, Nintendo directs you to service.
A third wireless controller will not join while Bluetooth audio is active Disconnect Bluetooth audio and retry with only the needed controllers. Nintendo limits Bluetooth-audio sessions to two wireless controllers.

Common mistakes that waste time

  • Holding SYNC for the reset: the reset-and-wake step is one press, followed by another controller button. The longer hold belongs on the pairing screen.
  • Testing a Lite like a docked Switch: Lite needs the Disconnect Controllers and hold-X sequence, and it has no built-in dock USB pairing path.
  • Assuming every Pro Controller is HAC-013: check the model before using Nintendo’s procedure, especially if the controller is third-party or designed for Switch 2.
  • Buying a cable for a Bluetooth problem: a replacement cable addresses charging or USB data testing, not wireless pairing by itself.
  • Ignoring the wired setting: connecting a cable and enabling Pro Controller Wired Communication are separate actions when you want ongoing wired use.
  • Opening the controller after one failed attempt: Nintendo’s manual prohibits disassembly and self-repair; complete the official tests first.

When service is the right answer

Do not open the controller, replace its battery, or attempt an internal repair as a connection fix. Nintendo’s Pro Controller manual states: Do not disassemble or try to repair this product or the battery inside it. It instructs users to stop using a damaged product and contact Nintendo Customer Support.

Arrange service when an official HAC-013 controller still cannot pair wirelessly or through USB after the correct console-specific steps, or when it repeatedly loses connection with a minimal setup and a known-good cable. Include the console model, controller model, whether USB pairing worked, the cables and dock tested, and the system software status so support can reproduce the failure path.

Service is also the correct destination when the controller is physically damaged or when an attempted firmware update repeatedly stops before completion despite retrying. Avoid unverified battery swaps, internal repairs and tools that bypass Nintendo’s support process.

What to remember

  • HAC-013 identifies the official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller; the Switch 2 Pro Controller is a different, Switch 2-only product.
  • For docked systems, update and restart, press SYNC once to reset and wake, then hold SYNC for at least one second on Change Grip and Order.
  • When USB pairing fails, compare another dock port, a known-good cable and another dock.
  • Switch Lite requires the Disconnect Controllers and X-button sequence, and wired use needs a licensed accessory.
  • Bluetooth audio limits the system to two wireless controllers, while the general supported ceiling is up to eight on Switch 2 or Switch, subject to controller and software limits.
  • Enable Pro Controller Wired Communication separately when you want ongoing wired use; doing so disables the NFC touchpoint.
  • A replacement HAC-010-compatible cable can help with charging or USB data, but it cannot generally fix Bluetooth pairing.
  • Persistent failure over both wireless and USB is a service issue, not a reason to disassemble the controller.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller before pairing it?

Press the controller’s SYNC button once, then press another button such as A. That brief sequence resets and wakes the controller. Afterward, open Controllers > Change Grip and Order and hold SYNC for at least one second to pair. Do not hold SYNC during the reset step.

Why does my Pro Controller connect and then disconnect?

Reset it with one SYNC press and pair again from Change Grip and Order. Test with only that controller connected, disconnect Bluetooth audio, and check stability in the HOME Menu or another game. Nintendo supports up to eight wireless controllers generally, but Bluetooth audio limits the system to two wireless controllers and software can impose lower limits.

Can I connect a Pro Controller by USB?

On a powered Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED or Switch 2 in its dock, connect the controller to a dock USB port with a compatible cable and press a controller button. If needed, test another port, cable or dock. Switch Lite needs a licensed accessory such as the HORI Dual USB PlayStand for a wired connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between pairing by cable and wired communication?

A USB connection can help pair or diagnose the controller. Ongoing wired use requires enabling Pro Controller Wired Communication in the console settings. On Switch 2 the menu is under Controllers & Accessories; on Switch and Switch OLED it is under Controllers and Sensors. Wired communication disables the NFC touchpoint.

Which cable should I use with the Pro Controller?

The manual identifies the included cable as HAC-010 and permits charging with a compatible approved adapter supplying 5 V, 1.5 A (7.5 W). Nintendo recommends trying another USB charging cable when dock USB pairing fails. A cable replacement is not a general fix for Bluetooth dropouts.

Why will my Switch Lite not pair with the Pro Controller?

Charge the controller, open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Disconnect Controllers, hold X until wireless controllers disconnect, press SYNC once and another button, then pair from Controllers > Change Grip and Order by holding SYNC for at least one second. Persistent failure should go to Nintendo service.

How do I know whether I have the right Pro Controller?

Look beneath the Nintendo logo on the back. Official Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are marked HAC-013, including special editions. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is a separate product that Nintendo says is compatible only with Switch 2. Third-party controllers should use their manufacturer’s instructions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I stop troubleshooting and request service?

Request Nintendo service when an official HAC-013 controller still cannot pair wirelessly or through USB after the correct console-specific steps, or when persistent dropouts remain with a minimal setup and known-good cable. Do not disassemble the controller or attempt an internal battery repair.

The Bottom Line

Check for model HAC-013, update and restart the console, press SYNC once and wake the controller, then pair from Change Grip and Order. For docked Switch, Switch OLED and Switch 2, test another USB port, cable and dock; for Switch Lite, follow the Disconnect Controllers and X-button sequence and use only a licensed wired accessory. If both wireless and USB pairing still fail, contact Nintendo service rather than opening the controller.
