A Nintendo Switch game that will not download or start can be failing for very different reasons: another game may be pausing the download, the title may have corrupted data, the microSD card may be unreliable, the wrong user may be opening a save, or a physical game card may not be readable. Start with the least destructive checks, then isolate storage and software before deleting anything.
This guide covers stalled downloads, the “Could not start the software. Please try again from the HOME Menu.” message, a flashing white X, a request to insert a game card, and missing or unreadable save data. The procedures are for Nintendo Switch; storage details for other console models can differ.

Identify the symptom before changing anything
Use the symptom to choose the right path. A download problem is not diagnosed the same way as a game-card read error or a missing save.

If several unrelated games fail in the same way, treat the pattern as a console, storage, or account issue rather than repeatedly reinstalling one title.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
- Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
- Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
Do these safe checks first
The following sequence follows Nintendo’s published troubleshooting order and avoids touching save data at the outset.
- Save and close any running game. Nintendo states: “Some games and software will pause downloads when they are being played.” Press the HOME button, highlight the running software, and close it after saving progress. Return to the HOME screen and inspect the download indicator.
- Confirm that the Switch is online. Check the console’s internet connection in System Settings and make sure it reports a successful connection. A connected Wi-Fi icon alone does not prove that the eShop or download service is reachable, so retry the affected download after the connection test.
- Refresh download progress from the user page. Open the user page associated with the download and check its download or redownload activity. If progress resumes, leave the console on the HOME screen until the title finishes.
- Restart the console. A normal restart clears a stalled process without deleting installed software or saves. After the console returns to HOME, check the same title again.
- Install available updates. Update the Switch system and the affected game before attempting more invasive repairs. A launch failure can persist when the console or title is behind the version expected by the software.
- Run the built-in corruption check. The exact path is HOME > System Settings > Data Management > Software > select the affected title > Check for Corrupted Data. Let the scan complete before launching the game.
- Separate storage from software. If a microSD card is installed, power down as directed by the console, reseat the card, and test the title again. For a stronger isolation test, remove the card and download the game to system memory.
- Delete and redownload only after the checks above. Use this when the title remains damaged or will not start. Confirm which data will be removed on the confirmation screen, and do not treat deleting software as deleting save data.
Before deleting anything, confirm which Nintendo Account purchased the digital title and which user profile contains the affected save. Keep the console connected to power during a large redownload, and do not remove a card or interrupt the process while data is being written. If the same error appears after a clean redownload to system memory, the evidence no longer points only to the original download.
When a download is stuck or will not begin
Close the software that is holding the download
Some games pause background downloads while they are being played. Save, close the running title from the HOME Menu, and check the download again. This is especially important when the download appears frozen but the console otherwise has internet access.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Refresh, reconnect, and restart
From the user page, refresh the download activity. If it still shows no movement, verify the connection in System Settings, then restart the Switch. Retry with the console idle on the HOME screen. A download that resumes after closing a game or restarting was being held by software state rather than proven storage failure.
Check storage capacity and location
Look at Data Management to confirm that the destination has enough free space. If the title is directed to a microSD card, remove the card and try system memory instead. This test is more informative than immediately buying another card: success in system memory implicates the card or the way it is being used, while failure in both locations keeps the network, account, or title in play.
Check the purchase and user context
For a digital game, make sure the console is using the Nintendo Account that obtained the purchase and that you are selecting the downloaded title rather than an icon representing a physical copy. A title-specific download or launch failure can involve account entitlement even when another game downloads normally. Do not assume that reinstalling changes which account owns the software.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
What a stalled download does not prove
A progress bar that stops does not by itself prove that the game is defective. It may reflect a paused download, a temporary connection problem, insufficient destination space, or a card that cannot reliably write data. Complete the isolation steps before deciding that the console needs service.
When a downloaded game will not launch
Restart and update before reinstalling
Restart the console, then install every available system and game update. Try the title from the HOME Menu after each update completes. If the message says, “Could not start the software. Please try again from the HOME Menu,” use the corruption check rather than repeatedly tapping the icon.
Check for corrupted data
Open HOME > System Settings > Data Management > Software, select the game, and choose Check for Corrupted Data. If the scan identifies a problem, follow the console’s repair or redownload prompt. If it finds nothing but the title still fails, continue with the storage test and a fresh download.
Redownload without assuming that saves are gone
Delete the problematic software and redownload it when the previous checks do not resolve the launch failure. Installed game software and save data are separate categories on Nintendo Switch, but read every confirmation screen carefully and avoid any option that explicitly deletes save data. The redownload should use the same Nintendo Account that owns the digital purchase.
Interpret the result of a clean reinstall
If the game launches after redownloading to the same destination, the original software data was likely incomplete or corrupted. If it launches only after moving from microSD to system memory, storage is the leading suspect. If it fails in both locations while other titles work, the problem is more specific to that title, its account entitlement, or its current update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFlashing white X or repeated corruption warnings
A flashing white X indicates that the console cannot use the installed software normally. Do not jump straight to formatting the card. First update the system, run Check for Corrupted Data, and retry the title.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Reseat and isolate the microSD card
Power the console down as instructed, remove and reseat the microSD card, and start the Switch again. If the error returns, test another compatible card if one is available, or remove the card and download the title to system memory. A title that works from system memory provides evidence against the game itself and toward the card or its interaction with the console.
Formatting is a last storage step
Nintendo’s troubleshooting includes formatting the microSD card when card-related problems persist. Formatting erases data on that card, so copy or redownload anything you need before confirming the operation and verify that the card is compatible with your specific Switch model. If formatting does not stop corruption, discontinue using that card and seek Nintendo service guidance rather than repeatedly reinstalling games onto it.
When replacement storage makes sense
A compatible Nintendo Switch microSD card is a reasonable replacement only after the system-memory test, reseating, and any available-card comparison point toward the card. A new card cannot fix an account entitlement problem, a title update failure, a network interruption, a corrupted save, or a console fault. Verify compatibility for the exact Switch model before purchasing, because storage requirements can differ between models.

Digital download versus physical game card
Digital copy asks for a card
First determine whether the icon represents a downloaded copy or a game-card copy. Confirm the user account that purchased the digital title and launch the digital icon from HOME. A prompt to insert a card while selecting a physical-copy icon is expected behavior, not evidence that a digital download is broken.
Physical card is not read
The downloaded-software procedure does not diagnose a game card that the console cannot read. Remove and reinsert the card, inspect whether the console recognizes it, and follow Nintendo’s separate game-card read troubleshooting. Do not delete a digital installation to repair a physical card; they are different failure paths.
When the problem is save data rather than the game
Verify the user and updates
If the game starts but reports missing, unreadable, or corrupted save data, check for a title update and restart the console. Confirm that the correct user profile is selected; saves belong to the user who created them. Test another game or application to see whether the symptom is confined to one title.

Use cloud restoration only when eligible
Save Data Cloud restoration is available only for a supported game and an account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The absence of a cloud backup cannot be repaired by reinstalling the game. Do not erase local save data while investigating unless you have confirmed that a usable cloud copy exists and you understand the restoration prompt.

Read the scope correctly
If another game’s saves open normally, concentrate on the affected title and its update or save record. If multiple games show unreadable saves, the pattern warrants Nintendo support or service instead of deleting each game in turn.
Use the one-title versus many-titles test
| Observed pattern | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one digital game fails; other downloads and games work | Title data, its update, account entitlement, or one save | Run the corruption check, update, and redownload that title. |
| Several games stored on microSD fail | Card reliability or card use in the console | Test system memory without the card, then try another compatible card if necessary. |
| Games fail from both microSD and system memory | Console, network, account, or broader software issue | Record the exact message and contact Nintendo support. |
| Only a physical card fails | Game-card reading path or the card itself | Use Nintendo’s game-card troubleshooting rather than digital-download repair steps. |
This comparison prevents a storage purchase from masking a network or account problem, and it prevents repeated redownloads when the console itself is the common factor.
Common mistakes that make the diagnosis harder
- Playing while judging the download. A running game can pause another download, so test from the HOME screen.
- Formatting before testing system memory. Formatting destroys card contents; first determine whether the title works without that card.
- Deleting save data with software. Read the confirmation screen and keep save data intact while you test updates, corruption, and storage.
- Buying a card before isolating the fault. A replacement is justified only when card-related behavior is reproducible or the system-memory comparison succeeds.
- Using digital steps for a physical card. A game-card read failure has its own troubleshooting path.
- Repeating the same reinstall on a console-wide failure. If multiple titles fail from different storage locations, collect the error details and escalate.
When to contact Nintendo or the game publisher
Prepare useful details
Contact Nintendo support when the published restart, update, corruption-check, storage-isolation, and redownload steps do not resolve the fault. Include the exact on-screen wording, whether the copy is digital or physical, whether the failure affects one title or several, where the title is stored, and whether another game launches. Also note the console region and any displayed error code because support routing and service options vary by region.
Know when service is appropriate
Nintendo directs unresolved console or software faults to service in cases covered by its support material. A failure that persists with different compatible storage, system memory, current updates, and more than one title is stronger evidence of a console-level issue than a single failed download.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will closing another game really fix a stuck download?
It can. Nintendo says some games and software pause downloads while they are being played. Save your progress, close the running software, and check the download again from HOME.
Does deleting a Switch game delete its save?
Installed software and save data are separate categories, but read every confirmation screen carefully and do not choose an option that explicitly deletes save data.
Should I buy a new microSD card immediately?
No. First reseat the card and download the title to system memory. If the game works there, the card or its use in the console becomes the leading suspect; otherwise a new card may not help.
What does a flashing white X mean?
It means the console cannot use the installed software normally. Update the system, run Check for Corrupted Data, and isolate the microSD card before formatting or replacing it.
Why does my digital game ask me to insert a game card?
You may be selecting the icon for a physical copy rather than the downloaded copy. Confirm the Nintendo Account that owns the digital title and launch its digital icon from HOME.
Can Nintendo Switch Online restore any missing save?
Save Data Cloud restoration applies only to a supported game and an account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Reinstalling the game cannot create a cloud backup that does not exist.
What if several games fail, not just one?
Test titles from both microSD and system memory. Failures across multiple titles point more toward storage, the console, network, or account issues than one damaged game.
Who should I contact after Nintendo’s steps fail?
Contact Nintendo support or service with the exact error, title, copy type, storage location, and scope of the failure. For a licensee-published game that alone remains broken after console checks pass, the publisher may also be appropriate.
The Bottom Line
Close running software, verify the connection, refresh and restart, update the system and game, then run Check for Corrupted Data. Test system memory without the microSD card before formatting or buying replacement storage, and keep digital, physical-card, and save-data failures on their separate troubleshooting paths. If the fault survives those tests, give Nintendo or the game publisher the exact error and one-title-versus-many-titles results.
