Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11A Nintendo Switch download that appears frozen usually has one of four causes: the console is waiting on an internet connection, the download is paused because another game is using online communication, storage is full, or the purchase belongs to a different Nintendo Account. Identify which stage has failed, then follow the matching fix below. Do not buy the game again while troubleshooting; digital purchases are tied to the purchasing account and generally cannot be returned, refunded, or transferred.
The safest approach is non-destructive: verify the connection and account, check storage, let the system download in a supported state, and only then investigate ownership or escalation. Keep the exact title and any error code in front of you as you work.

First, identify exactly what is stuck
“The download failed” can describe several different problems. The eShop might not open, a purchase might not start, a progress bar might stop, or an add-on might finish downloading but wait to install. The remedy depends on the stage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| The eShop will not open | Confirm the console is online and that the active Switch user is linked to a Nintendo Account. |
| The purchase does not appear on the HOME Menu | Check that you are using the Nintendo Account that bought the software and look for its Virtual Game Card. |
| The progress bar is moving very slowly | Allow more time, check free storage, and stop software that uses online communication. |
| The progress bar has stopped | Close software with online communication features or place the console in sleep mode, then check the HOME Menu. |
| An add-on downloaded but is not available in the game | Close the base game; installation occurs automatically only while that game is closed. |
| An error code appears | Write the code down exactly and use Nintendo support for your region before assigning it a meaning. |
Keep the title, region, Nintendo Account used for the purchase, current free space, and the exact on-screen wording available. Those details prevent support from having to repeat the same diagnostic questions.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
- Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
- Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
Also note whether the item is a full game, an update, downloadable content, a demo, or Nintendo Switch Online subscription-only software. These categories can follow different download or redownload paths, so identifying the product first avoids applying the wrong menu instructions.
Check the eShop prerequisites
Nintendo lists three basic requirements for eShop use: an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, and a Switch user linked to that account. Check all three before treating a download as a console fault.
Verify the network connection
- Open the HOME Menu and use the console’s internet settings to confirm that it is connected to your usual network.
- If the connection test reports a failure, resolve that connection problem before retrying the purchase. A download cannot begin reliably while the console is offline.
- If the connection works but the download is merely slow, leave the console connected and allow additional time. Nintendo notes that software files can be large and that download time depends on the internet environment; a slow transfer alone does not prove that the Switch is defective.
A wired connection is an optional comparison for a home setup when your model and network equipment support it. It is not a guaranteed cure for an eShop problem: the available Nintendo guidance describes the equipment needed for wired and wireless connections, but does not establish that wired networking fixes a particular failed download.
Use the network test as a checkpoint, not as proof that every eShop service is available. A successful local connection does not confirm ownership of a title, available storage, or the status of Nintendo’s services. If the eShop itself will not load, record that separately from a download that starts and then pauses.
Confirm the linked account
- Identify the Switch user who opened the eShop.
- Confirm that this user is linked to a Nintendo Account.
- For an item you already own, make sure that account is the one that completed the purchase. A different family member’s profile can use the console without owning the other account’s digital entitlement.
Do not remove the user or unlink accounts as a first troubleshooting step. Account changes can create a separate access problem without repairing the original download. If several people use the console, write down which user started the transaction before switching profiles.
Check free storage before retrying
Open HOME Menu > System Settings > Data Management and inspect the available capacity. Nintendo treats downloaded software data—including downloads, add-ons, and update data—separately from save data. That software data may be stored in the console’s system memory or on a microSD card.
If the console is short on space
- Use Data Management to organize software data you no longer need immediately.
- Where the console offers the option, move software data between system memory and the installed microSD card.
- Recheck the free-capacity figure before starting the eShop download again.
Check storage before repeatedly retrying. A transfer can appear stalled when the console cannot allocate enough room for the download, an update, or an add-on. Save data is distinct from downloaded software data, so do not assume that deleting a game’s software data automatically deletes its save data; use the options and warnings shown in Data Management.
Do not format a card as a routine fix. Formatting can erase data and is not a first-line response to a stuck download. If the card itself is suspected, preserve important data and ask Nintendo support for model- and region-specific instructions before taking a destructive step.
Choosing additional storage for an original Switch
For the original Nintendo Switch family, Nintendo lists microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards and recommends the UHS-I standard. A microSDXC card requires a system update before it can be used. A card is useful when the actual bottleneck is storage; it cannot repair an account entitlement, an eShop service issue, or a wireless connection.

| Console generation | Card guidance in the cited Nintendo material | What that solves |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo Switch | microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC; UHS-I recommended. microSDXC requires a system update. | Insufficient space for software, add-ons, or updates. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo’s guidance refers to microSD Express for this generation. | Storage expansion for a Switch 2; it does not make an original Switch compatible with that card standard. |
Do not buy a Switch 2 microSD Express card for an original Switch on the assumption that it is a faster replacement. Match the card standard to the console generation first. Speedier storage also cannot fix a failed account check or a connection that drops during the transfer.
Let the download run in a supported state
Downloads do not always continue while another game is active. Nintendo says a download can proceed in sleep mode or while you play software that does not use online communication features. Downloads pause while software with online communication features is being played, even if you are not actively using its online modes.
Recommended Free Tools
Resume a paused download
- Save your progress in the game currently open.
- Close that software completely from the HOME Menu if it uses online communication features.
- Alternatively, place the console in sleep mode while it remains connected to power and the network.
- Wake the console and look at the HOME Menu to see whether the progress indicator has advanced.
Do not judge the result from a brief pause. Large files can take time, particularly on a slow or busy internet connection. Check whether the progress has changed after a reasonable interval rather than repeatedly cancelling and restarting the transfer.
If you are testing several fixes, change one condition at a time. For example, first close the online-enabled game and observe the download, then try sleep mode if necessary. This makes it easier to tell whether the pause was caused by active software or by a separate connection, storage, or account issue.
Distinguish an add-on download from its installation
Download completion and in-game availability are not always simultaneous for downloadable content. Nintendo says add-on installation occurs automatically only when the base game is closed.
- Exit the base game to the HOME Menu; suspending it is not the same as closing it.
- Wait briefly for the system to process the add-on.
- Open the game again and check its downloadable-content or in-game content screen.
If the add-on still does not appear after the base game has been closed, record the title, the purchasing account, and any displayed message. Treat this as an entitlement or installation issue rather than repeatedly redownloading the same content. Verify that the add-on belongs to the same account and base-game region shown on the console.

Redownload a purchased game through the correct account
Purchased software belongs to the Nintendo Account that bought it. Nintendo’s current guidance uses Virtual Game Cards for redownloading purchased software and add-ons. From April 30, 2025, purchased software and add-ons are redownloaded through Virtual Game Cards rather than the eShop. Nintendo Switch Online subscription-only software and demos are exceptions handled from their product descriptions.
Use the purchasing account
- Switch to the console user linked to the Nintendo Account that made the purchase.
- Open the system’s Virtual Game Card area from the HOME Menu.
- Locate the purchased title or add-on and choose the available option to set its Virtual Game Card for redownload.
- Return to the HOME Menu and allow the download to start. Keep the purchasing account linked to a console user.
Menu labels and the exact placement of Virtual Game Cards can vary with region, account settings, and system software updates. Follow the wording shown on your console rather than an older guide that tells you to use an eShop redownload button that is no longer present.
If the title is missing
- Check every relevant Switch user and Nintendo Account on the console; the item may belong to another account in the household.
- Confirm that the purchase was completed rather than left in an unfinished checkout state.
- Consider whether distribution of the title has ended. Nintendo notes that a title may no longer be redownloadable after distribution ends.
Do not repurchase the software to test whether the first transaction worked. Nintendo’s eShop usage notice says purchased digital products generally cannot be returned, refunded, or transferred. A second purchase can leave you with two charges without fixing the original entitlement or download problem.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Handle error codes carefully
Write down the complete code, including every letter, number, hyphen, and punctuation mark, along with the screen on which it appeared. A code shown while opening the eShop is not necessarily the same problem as a code shown during a transfer or while loading an owned title.

The available Nintendo guidance for this topic does not provide a complete English, Switch-specific error-code reference or establish a current service outage. Do not infer that Nintendo’s servers are down from one failed attempt. Check Nintendo’s current official network-status information for your region when available, and use a support page for your console generation and country before applying code-specific instructions.
A photo of the message can be useful, but do not share account passwords or payment details. Note the time, whether other online features worked, and whether the same code returned after the console had free space and no other software open.
Use this decision path before escalating
| Result after the check | Next action |
|---|---|
| Console is offline | Restore internet access, then retry the eShop operation. |
| Console is online but storage is insufficient | Organize or move software data, or install compatible storage, then retry. |
| Download pauses only while a network-enabled game is open | Close that game or use sleep mode. |
| Add-on is downloaded but absent in-game | Close the base game and allow automatic installation. |
| Purchased title is absent from the eShop | Use the purchasing account’s Virtual Game Card and check whether distribution has ended. |
| All checks pass but the same code or failure returns | Contact Nintendo Technical Support with a complete diagnostic record. |
This order avoids destructive actions and separates problems that look alike. A slow transfer should be given time; a missing entitlement should be checked against the purchasing account; and a card purchase should be considered only when Data Management shows storage is the actual limitation.
What to tell Nintendo support
Nintendo lists technical support for console settings, network connections, accounts, and digital-download purchases. Prepare the following information before contacting them:
- Console model and region.
- The title, update, or add-on that will not download.
- The Nintendo Account and Switch user involved, without sharing your password.
- The exact error code and the screen where it appeared.
- Whether the eShop opens and whether other internet features work on the console.
- The free-space figure shown under System Settings > Data Management.
- Whether the download was attempted in sleep mode and with other software closed.
- Whether the item was purchased before April 30, 2025 and whether it appears among the account’s Virtual Game Cards.
Use Nintendo’s separate repair or service-center route when the evidence points to a hardware fault, such as a console that cannot maintain any network connection or cannot read an otherwise compatible storage card. Technical support can distinguish an account, network, entitlement, or software-data issue from a repair case.
Tell support what you already tried and what changed, if anything. “The download stopped” is less useful than “the eShop opened, the account is linked, 40 GB was free, the title paused only while an online-enabled game was open, and the same code returned in sleep mode.”
Prevent the next failed download
- Keep enough free space for the software, its updates, and any planned add-ons instead of waiting for the storage warning.
- Leave long downloads in sleep mode when the console is connected and you are not playing.
- Close network-enabled software before starting a large transfer.
- Keep the purchasing Nintendo Account linked to a Switch user so Virtual Game Card redownloads remain available.
- Record error codes immediately; a later photo or exact transcription is more useful than a description such as “it just stopped.”
- Check the card standard before buying storage: original Switch models use the microSD family described by Nintendo, while Switch 2 guidance refers to microSD Express.
These habits do not guarantee a faster download, but they remove the most common avoidable blockers: insufficient capacity, an active online-enabled game, and uncertainty over which account owns the software.
Important regional and version limits
The clearest official instructions available for these steps come from Nintendo Support Japan. Menu names, Virtual Game Card behavior, account rules, and support routes can differ by region, console generation, or later system-software updates. Use the instructions displayed on your own console and the Nintendo support site serving your country when they differ from this guide.

That qualification is the reason to separate a genuinely failed transfer from a download that is progressing slowly. If the account, connection, storage, and supported download state all check out and the problem persists, escalation with the complete details above is safer than deleting data, formatting a card, or purchasing the title a second time.

Why is my Switch download stuck at the same percentage?
First check whether another game with online communication features is open. Nintendo says downloads pause while that software is being played, even if you are not actively using its online modes. Close it or put the console into sleep mode, then allow more time. Large files can take a while depending on the internet environment.
Can a download continue while the Switch is in sleep mode?
Yes. Nintendo documents sleep mode as a supported state for downloaded purchases. Leave the console connected to the network, then check the HOME Menu after waking it.
Why did my DLC download but not appear in the game?
Close the base game completely. Nintendo says add-on installation occurs automatically only while the base game is closed. After the system has a moment to process it, reopen the game and check its downloadable-content screen.
Do I need a microSD card to download a game?
Only if the console does not have enough available storage. Check HOME Menu > System Settings > Data Management first. Original Switch models support microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards, with UHS-I recommended; microSDXC requires a system update. A card does not fix network or account problems.
Can I use a Switch 2 microSD Express card in an original Switch?
Do not assume compatibility. Nintendo’s guidance refers to microSD Express for Switch 2, while original Switch guidance covers the microSD family and recommends UHS-I. Match the card standard to the console generation.

Should I buy the game again if the first download failed?
No. Nintendo says purchased digital products generally cannot be returned, refunded, or transferred. Verify the purchasing account and Virtual Game Card, then contact support if the entitlement or download remains unavailable.
Should I format my microSD card?
Not as a first-line download fix. Formatting can erase data and does not address a paused transfer, account mismatch, or eShop connection problem. Ask Nintendo for model- and region-specific advice before taking a destructive step.
When should I contact Nintendo?
Escalate when the console is online, has adequate storage, uses the correct account, and still returns the same failure or code. Provide the console model and region, title, exact code, free-space figure, download stage, and results of trying closed software or sleep mode. Use the repair route when the evidence points to hardware rather than an account, network, or software-data issue.

Check whether a game with online communication features is open, whether the console has enough free storage, and whether the active user is linked to the purchasing Nintendo Account. Close the game or use sleep mode, then allow the large download more time.
Can Switch games download in sleep mode?
Yes. Nintendo documents sleep mode as a supported download state. Keep the console connected to the network and check the HOME Menu after waking it.
Why is my DLC downloaded but not installed?
Close the base game completely. Nintendo says add-on installation occurs automatically only while the base game is closed.
Do I need a microSD card?

Can I repurchase a failed digital game?
Do not repurchase it as a test. Purchased digital products generally cannot be returned, refunded, or transferred. Check the purchasing account’s Virtual Game Card and contact Nintendo if needed.
When should I contact Nintendo support?
Contact support when connection, storage, account, and supported download-state checks all pass but the same failure or error code returns. Include the title, console model and region, exact code, free space, and steps already tried.
The Bottom Line
Start with the least destructive checks: confirm internet access and the linked purchasing account, inspect Data Management for free space, close online-enabled software or use sleep mode, and close the base game so add-ons can install. Use the correct Virtual Game Card for owned software, do not format storage or repurchase a title as a test, and give Nintendo support the exact code and diagnostic details when the problem persists.
