How to fix a music system with no sound or intermittent audio

Work from the outside in: confirm power, the selected input, mute, volume, headphone status, and every cable before assuming the receiver or amplifier has failed. Then try another source or input, isolate the speaker and wire path, and respond to any PROTECT warning before reconnecting anything. Change one thing at a time and check for sound after each change; labels and reset procedures differ by model.

Start with the symptom, not a diagnosis

“No sound” and “intermittent audio” describe an outcome, not a failed part. The fastest way to narrow the fault is to record what changes and what does not. Use the observations below to choose the next check, but do not treat them as proof that a particular internal component is bad.

What you observe What it suggests Next check
No sound from every source and both speakers A control, connection, protection state, or common signal-path issue Run the basic-control checks, then try a different source and the receiver’s test tone if available.
Only one input or source is silent The fault may follow that source, its output setting, or its cable Use the same receiver input with another source, or move the source to another input.
Only one speaker or channel is silent A speaker selector, channel connection, speaker wire, or speaker may be involved Check the selected speaker configuration and substitute known-good wire or a speaker if the model permits.
Sound returns when a cable is moved An unstable plug, damaged cable, or loose terminal is possible Power down, reseat both ends, inspect the cable, and substitute a known-good cable.
Sound stops at higher volume or the display shows PROTECT/PROTECTOR The receiver may be reacting to a short, unsupported impedance, heat, poor ventilation, or a recent power event Power off before touching wires, inspect for shorts and ventilation problems, and verify impedance in the manual.

This pattern-based approach is consistent with the troubleshooting procedures published by Sony Canada (last modified August 21, 2019), Sony USA (last modified May 15, 2024), Sony UK (last modified August 4, 2026), and Denon’s PMA-50 manual page checked October 13, 2026.

Before touching a cable: perform the basic-control checks

  1. Confirm power. Make sure the music system, receiver or amplifier, and the source device are switched on. A source can appear active while its output is paused, asleep, or disconnected.
  2. Select the input that is actually connected. Use the receiver’s Input, Source, or Function control and select the jack or wireless source carrying your music. Selecting an unused input produces silence even when the receiver is working normally.
  3. Cancel mute. Press Mute once and verify that the display no longer indicates muting. Check both the receiver and the source device; a muted television or phone can be silent while the receiver shows an active input.
  4. Raise volume cautiously. Start at a low level and increase it gradually. Confirm that the receiver’s volume is changing rather than a separate zone, balance control, or source-level control.
  5. Remove headphones. Many systems route audio away from the speakers when a headphone plug is inserted. Unplug headphones from the receiver and any connected device, then test the speakers again.

These checks are deliberately simple because wrong input, mute, low volume, headphones, and an unseated connection are common external causes. If the system has several zones or speaker selectors, confirm that the active zone and speaker set match the terminals where the speakers are connected; the exact control name is model-specific.

Reseat and inspect every connection

Turn the volume down before handling plugs. For speaker-wire work, switch the receiver off first. A connection can look inserted while its plug is loose enough to produce silence or sound that cuts out when the cable moves.

  1. Trace the signal path from the source to the receiver. Reseat the source cable at both ends and confirm that it is connected to the intended receiver input.
  2. Trace the speaker path from each receiver output to the matching speaker terminal. Make sure the left and right channels have not been swapped accidentally and that positive and negative terminals are connected as the manual shows.
  3. Inspect plugs, terminals, and cable jackets for looseness, bent parts, corrosion, crushed sections, or visible cuts. Do not continue using a cable with exposed conductors that can touch another terminal.
  4. Check that you are using receiver outputs for speakers and receiver inputs for sources. Connecting to a similarly shaped but incorrect terminal can give you silence without any obvious error message.
  5. Reconnect firmly, restore power, and test at low volume. If the symptom changes when a particular cable is moved, stop flexing it and substitute a known-good cable.

Sony’s general guidance and Denon’s PMA-50 troubleshooting instructions both place cable and connection checks ahead of an internal-failure conclusion. Follow the exact wiring diagram for your model; terminal layouts and supported connections vary.

Use another source or input to isolate the receiver

Substitution is more informative than repeatedly restarting the same setup. Keep the speakers and receiver unchanged while changing only the source or input, then observe whether the problem follows the source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect a source that normally works to a different receiver input, if the receiver provides one of the appropriate type.
  2. Select that new input and play a known-good track or broadcast at a low volume.
  3. If the second source plays normally, inspect the original source’s output setting, cable, pairing, or application. The receiver is less likely to be the sole cause of a fault limited to one source.
  4. If every source remains silent, continue with the speaker-path and protection checks rather than repeatedly changing source settings.

For television audio, check the TV’s audio-output mode and whether its output is fixed or variable. With a variable output, the TV’s own volume control may need to be raised; with a fixed output, volume is normally controlled by the receiver. The available labels differ by television and receiver, so use the model manuals rather than assuming a universal menu path.

Check speaker selection, channels, and the wire path

Once a source is known to be producing audio, determine whether the receiver is sending it to the intended speakers.

Verify speaker configuration

Confirm that the speaker selector or speaker configuration includes the terminals you used. A receiver set to Speaker B, a second zone, or a headphone-only mode can leave the connected pair silent. The Sony USA procedure specifically recommends checking the speaker selector and configuration against the actual connections.

Use the built-in test tone when available

If your receiver offers a test tone, run it with the volume low and listen to each channel. A tone in both channels points toward the source or its settings; a missing tone in one channel keeps attention on that channel’s wire, terminal, speaker, or configuration. Not every model has a test tone, and the menu name and safe level vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Substitute one external part at a time

If you have known-good speaker wire, replace one run and test again. If you have a known-good speaker, connect it to the affected channel only when the receiver manual permits that test. A change after substitution identifies the external part as a leading suspect; it does not establish the condition of the receiver’s internal circuitry.

Replace wire only for a reason

Speaker wire is a sensible replacement when the existing jacket or conductor is damaged, a terminal is unreliable, or a known-good run makes intermittent audio stop. Match the wire and connection requirements in the receiver and speaker manuals. Do not use a replacement as a reason to exceed the receiver’s supported speaker load or to run damaged conductors behind equipment.

Troubleshoot intermittent audio without making it worse

Intermittent sound can be caused by a marginal plug, cable, source connection, wireless link, or protection event. The goal is to find what the symptom follows while avoiding repeated movement of a live connection.

  • Note whether both channels cut out together or only one channel does.
  • Note whether the interruption occurs with one source, every source, or only when the volume is increased.
  • Observe whether touching a plug, changing an input, or moving a cable coincides with recovery.
  • For a wireless source, keep the device close enough for a stable connection and confirm that it remains paired; Denon’s PMA-50 guidance includes checking Bluetooth pairing and distance.
  • After each single change, play the same material long enough to see whether the symptom returns.

If a cable substitution makes the interruption disappear, retire the suspect cable rather than continuing to bend it. If the interruption affects all sources and both speakers, or coincides with heat or a protection indication, stop treating it as a source problem and follow the protection procedure below.

What to do when the receiver shows PROTECT or PROTECTOR

A protection message is a warning that the receiver has detected a condition outside its safe operating range. Sony UK lists speaker-wire shorts, unsupported speaker impedance, overheating or poor ventilation, and a recent power event among possible causes for applicable receiver categories. The exact trigger depends on the model.

  1. Power the receiver off. Do not pull or reconnect speaker wires while it is operating.
  2. Inspect for stray strands. Look at each speaker terminal for loose copper strands touching the adjacent terminal or the chassis. Check for a wire pinched under a terminal or damaged insulation exposing conductors.
  3. Check ventilation. Remove objects blocking the receiver’s vents and allow the unit to cool. Do not operate it inside a cramped space that prevents the airflow specified by the manual.
  4. Verify speaker impedance. Read the impedance requirement on the receiver’s rear panel or in its model manual and compare it with the connected speakers and any combined speaker arrangement. Do not infer compatibility from the speaker’s size or wattage alone.
  5. Reconnect and test cautiously. After the external checks, reconnect only as the manual directs and use a low volume. If the warning returns, switch off again and stop testing.

Do not bypass, repeatedly reset, or disable a protection circuit. A persistent warning after external wiring, impedance, and ventilation checks requires the manufacturer’s service route or a qualified audio technician.

Follow the right branch for common situations

There is no sound from any source

Complete the power, input, mute, volume, and headphone checks first. Then reseat source and speaker connections, try a different source or input, and run a test tone if available. If all sources and the test tone are silent, inspect speaker selection and look for a protection indication before considering service.

Only one source is silent

Leave the receiver and speakers unchanged and move the source to another suitable input or substitute another source on the original input. If the fault follows the source, check that device’s output, cable, pairing, or TV output mode. If the other source is also silent on that input, inspect the input connection and receiver configuration.

Only one speaker or channel is silent

Check channel assignment and speaker selection, then use the receiver’s test tone if present. Inspect that channel’s terminals and wire, and substitute a known-good wire or speaker one at a time where supported. A fault that remains on one receiver channel after external substitutions should be assessed by service rather than diagnosed from symptoms alone.

Sound cuts out during loud passages

Lower the volume and check for a PROTECT/PROTECTOR indication, heat, blocked vents, shorts, or an impedance mismatch. Continue only within the speaker load and ventilation limits in the model manual. If protection returns, power off and seek service.

A television works intermittently or is silent

Verify the TV’s selected audio output and whether that output is fixed or variable. A variable output may be turned down at the TV even when the receiver’s volume is raised. Reseat the TV-to-receiver cable and test another source to determine whether the receiver or television path is responsible.

A Bluetooth source drops in and out

Confirm that the intended device is still paired, keep it within the distance recommended for the system, and prevent it from switching its audio output to another device. Denon’s PMA-50 troubleshooting page includes pairing and distance among its checks. If a wired source is stable while Bluetooth is not, focus on the wireless connection rather than replacing speaker wire.

When to stop troubleshooting and arrange service

External checks have a useful limit. Arrange manufacturer service or consult a qualified audio technician when the receiver repeatedly enters protection after you have checked for shorts, impedance mismatch, and ventilation problems; when a channel remains dead with known-good external connections; when there is a burning smell, visible damage, liquid exposure, or abnormal heat; or when the manual requires an internal reset or repair procedure you cannot safely perform.

Do not infer a failed amplifier component solely because the speakers are silent. Sony’s troubleshooting pages direct users to model-specific support or service when the listed external checks do not resolve the fault. Internal measurements, repairs, and reset limits are model dependent and can create additional risk if performed without the correct procedure.

A compact checklist to keep beside the system

  • System and source powered on.
  • Correct input selected.
  • Mute cancelled on both receiver and source.
  • Volume raised cautiously on the control that actually governs the output.
  • Headphones removed.
  • Source and speaker plugs reseated and inspected.
  • Another source or input tested.
  • Speaker selector and configuration matched to the connected terminals.
  • Test tone run, if the model provides one.
  • Known-good cable or speaker substituted only when available and supported.
  • PROTECT/PROTECTOR response handled with power off, wire, impedance, and ventilation checks.
  • Service arranged when the fault persists after external checks.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Manufacturer guidance supports a disciplined isolation process, not a guaranteed component diagnosis or repair-cost estimate. Sony Canada, Sony USA, Sony UK, and Denon describe the controls, connections, source substitutions, test tones, wireless checks, protection causes, and service escalation summarized here. They do not establish a universal failure rate, success percentage, or single procedure that applies to every music system. Treat model-specific manuals as the authority for terminal assignments, impedance limits, ventilation, reset steps, and supported features.

The practical verdict is straightforward: correct the external signal path first, isolate the symptom with one controlled substitution at a time, and treat a recurring protection warning or unresolved channel fault as a service issue rather than something to force past.
