Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFix a Magic Mouse by separating the symptom first: a mouse that will not connect needs power and Bluetooth checks; scrolling problems usually involve the touch gesture or Mouse settings; and a jittery pointer points to the underside sensor or wireless interference. Confirm your mouse’s charging port or battery type before choosing a cable.
Work through the model, power, pairing, gesture, tracking, and click checks below. If a primary click still does not register after the mouse is powered and connected, the documented guidance supports service rather than a user repair.

Start with a two-minute triage
Before changing settings, establish which failure you actually have. A lost Bluetooth connection, a pointer that moves erratically, a scroll gesture that does nothing, and a failed physical click have different remedies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- No pointer movement or no connection: check the switch, battery or charge, Bluetooth, pairing, and interference.
- Pointer moves but will not scroll: test the one-finger brush gesture and Mouse settings.
- Pointer is slow, jittery, or lagging: clean the underside sensor and investigate wireless interference.
- Pointer moves but a click does nothing: determine whether primary clicking or secondary clicking is the problem.
Keep the Mac close to the mouse while troubleshooting. If the mouse has a cable, use it only after identifying whether the mouse has a USB-C port or a Lightning port; an earlier battery model has no charging port.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not treat every symptom as a Bluetooth failure. If the pointer moves smoothly but scrolling stopped, the connection is already working and the relevant checks are the touch gesture and Mouse settings. If movement is jerky while clicks still work, clean the sensor before repeatedly pairing the mouse. If only a right-click is missing, check Secondary click rather than buying a new cable.
1. Identify the Magic Mouse model before you plug anything in
Turn the mouse over and inspect the port and switch. The current USB-C Magic Mouse was introduced in 2024, has a USB-C port, and is specified for macOS 15.1 or later. Its box includes a USB-C charge cable. See Apple’s USB-C Magic Mouse technical specifications for those model details.
Older rechargeable Magic Mouse models use a Lightning connector. Earlier wireless models that predate the rechargeable design use replaceable batteries and follow different pairing steps. Do not force a USB-C or Lightning plug into a different model, and do not buy a cable until you have checked the mouse end.

| What you see on the mouse | Power method | Correct next step |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C port | Built-in rechargeable battery | Use a compatible USB-C cable to pair or charge. |
| Lightning port | Built-in rechargeable battery | Use a compatible Lightning cable to pair or charge. |
| No charging port | Replaceable batteries | Check or replace the batteries, then use the earlier-device pairing procedure. |
Also check the connector at the Mac or power-adapter end of the cable. A cable can fit the mouse but still be unusable with the available Mac port, or fit the Mac while having the wrong connector for the mouse. The mouse-end connector determines compatibility first; the Mac-end connector determines where you can plug it in.
On any model, slide the bottom switch off and back on. A green area visible beneath the switch means the mouse is on. This simple reset is the first check in Apple’s setup and connection guidance: set up a Magic Mouse with a Mac and troubleshoot a Magic Mouse that will not connect.
2. Check charge, batteries, and the cable
Rechargeable USB-C and Lightning models
Check the charge level from the Mac rather than looking for a light on the mouse. Open Control Centre > Bluetooth on macOS versions that show accessory battery levels, or open the Bluetooth menu and select the mouse. The mouse itself has no charge indicator.
- Connect the cable that matches the port on the mouse.
- Plug the other end into the Mac or a power adapter.
- Leave it connected to the Mac for about one minute. Apple’s connection flow uses that wired connection to pair and begin charging the accessory.
- Disconnect the cable and try the mouse wirelessly.
A Magic Mouse cannot be used while it is charging. Apple states: “Magic Mouse is unavailable for use while charging.” The same page explains the charge-and-disconnect workflow: Recharge the built-in battery in your Apple keyboard, mouse or trackpad.

If the mouse works over the cable but disappears as soon as you unplug it, leave it connected longer, verify the charge level in Bluetooth, and repeat the pairing step. A cable that fits the Mac but not the mouse is not a substitute for the correct connector at the mouse end.
If no battery level appears after the cable has been connected, first confirm that the mouse is switched on and that the plug is fully seated. Try the same matching cable at the Mac or a power adapter, then allow the one-minute wired pairing step to complete before testing wirelessly. Do not judge charging by an indicator on the mouse: Apple’s guidance places the battery information in macOS instead.
Earlier battery-powered models
Open the battery compartment according to the model’s design and check that the cells are seated correctly. Replace depleted batteries with a matched set. If the LED never illuminates after fresh batteries and the switch is on, follow Apple’s separate earlier-device pairing instructions in its connection troubleshooting article; a dark LED indicates that power still needs to be resolved before Bluetooth pairing can succeed.
3. Restore Bluetooth pairing
Bluetooth must be enabled on the Mac. In current macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth. On older releases, the same controls are in System Preferences; Apple uses both labels because the menu name changed between macOS versions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Turn Bluetooth on and look for the Magic Mouse in the device list.
- If it appears, select it and choose the available connect or pair control.
- If it does not appear, switch the mouse off, wait a few seconds, switch it on, and keep it near the Mac.
- For a rechargeable model, connect the matching cable to the Mac for about one minute, then disconnect and test again.
- If Bluetooth cannot be enabled or the device list is frozen, restart the Mac and repeat the search.
When the connection drops repeatedly rather than failing at startup, move the mouse and Mac away from likely wireless sources and test again. Bluetooth interference can cause intermittent behavior even when the mouse is powered. Apple’s connection checks and pairing sequence are documented at If you can’t connect your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad to your Mac.
A mouse that is absent from the list after the switch, battery, and cable checks is not fixed by changing scroll speed. Conversely, if it appears as connected and the pointer moves, pairing has succeeded; move to the gesture, tracking, or click branch that matches the remaining symptom. This separation prevents repeatedly restarting Bluetooth when the actual problem is a setting or sensor.
4. Fix scrolling that stopped working
Magic Mouse scrolling is a touch gesture, not a wheel click. Place one finger on the touch surface and brush it in the direction you want to scroll. Apple describes this one-finger motion in its Mac user guide: Use a Magic Mouse with Mac mini.

Check the scroll setting
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Mouse. On older macOS, open System Preferences > Mouse.
- Adjust the scrolling speed and test a page or document.
- Keep one finger on the surface while brushing; lifting or placing a second finger changes the gesture.
Do not confuse ordinary scrolling with the separate horizontal two-finger swipe gesture. A horizontal swipe can move between pages or full-screen spaces, while the one-finger brush is the normal vertical scrolling action. If the pointer moves and clicks normally but neither gesture responds, revisit the Bluetooth and power checks; changing scroll speed cannot repair a disconnected mouse.
Test in more than one scrollable window so a page-specific behavior is not mistaken for a mouse fault. Use a light, continuous brush rather than pressing down as if the mouse had a wheel. If vertical scrolling works but a two-finger horizontal action does not, that is a separate gesture behavior, not proof that the mouse has lost its connection.
5. Fix a jittery, slow, or lagging pointer
Tracking trouble is different from a connection failure. If the pointer moves but jumps, pauses, or responds slowly, inspect the sensor on the underside.
Clean the sensor safely
- Turn the mouse off.
- Use a clean, dry cloth on the underside sensor area.
- If you use compressed air, keep the can upright while spraying; do not invert it.
- Turn the mouse on and test tracking on a plain desktop.
Apple’s sensor-cleaning and tracking advice is available in How to keep your Magic Mouse tracking smoothly. Cleaning addresses dirt that disrupts optical tracking; it does not repair a Bluetooth radio, restore pairing, or make a failed click register.
Check interference and tracking speed
Keep the Mac and mouse away from sources of wireless interference and test in a different position. Then open System Settings (or System Preferences) > Mouse and adjust tracking speed. Use a moderate setting while diagnosing the problem so that a very slow setting is not mistaken for lag.
If the pointer remains unreliable after cleaning, changing tracking speed, and checking interference, Apple indicates that service may be required. There is no documented user teardown procedure in the cited support guidance, so avoid opening the mouse or spraying liquid into it.
6. Determine which kind of click has failed
Primary click
A normal click is made by pressing the upper surface of the mouse. First confirm that the mouse is powered, connected, and moving the pointer. Test a simple desktop selection or menu item. If the pointer moves but no primary click registers anywhere, the symptom is physical or hardware-related rather than a secondary-click setting.

Secondary (right) click
Secondary clicking is configurable. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Mouse (or System Preferences > Mouse on older macOS), find Secondary click, and choose the desired right- or left-side option. Apple documents this control and the other Magic Mouse behaviors in its Magic Mouse user guide.
As an immediate alternative, hold the Control key while clicking. A Control-click opens the contextual menu even when the configured secondary-click side is not producing the expected result.

When primary clicking still does not work
After confirming power, Bluetooth, and a working pointer, try the click on more than one item. If primary clicking remains absent, the reviewed Apple instructions do not establish a home repair. Contact Apple Support or a qualified service provider rather than promising that a cable, compressed air, or a settings change will fix a physical switch or surface fault. Apple’s connection guidance is at support.apple.com/en-au/102498.
7. Use the symptom to choose the right accessory
Accessories help only when they match the documented cause. For pairing or charging, choose the connector at the mouse end first:
- USB-C Magic Mouse: a compatible USB-C cable.
- Older rechargeable Magic Mouse: the corresponding Lightning cable.
- Earlier battery model: no charging cable; use replacement batteries and the earlier pairing steps.
- Dirty-sensor tracking problem: a clean cloth or upright compressed-air can may support the cleaning step.
A cable does not solve a depleted battery-powered model, a dirty sensor does not restore Bluetooth, and neither accessory is evidence of a fix for a failed primary click. Apple’s model and charging specifications are listed in the USB-C technical specifications and battery recharge guidance.
8. Complete troubleshooting checklist
Run this sequence in order so that a later setting does not mask an earlier power problem:

When service is the appropriate next step
Stop troubleshooting at home when the mouse will not power on after a correct battery or charge check, will not remain paired after the cable and Bluetooth steps, continues to track badly after sensor cleaning and interference checks, or cannot register a primary click while connected. The official guidance supports service for persistent tracking and connection faults but does not promise a particular hardware repair. Give the technician the exact symptom and model connector so they can distinguish a battery, Bluetooth, sensor, or click fault.

Before contacting Apple Support or a qualified service provider, note whether the mouse works while connected by cable, whether Bluetooth lists it, whether the pointer moves, and whether the failure affects primary click, secondary click, vertical scrolling, or horizontal swiping. Those details make it easier to identify the relevant fault without repeating unrelated steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my Magic Mouse connect to my Mac?
Check the switch and green indicator, confirm the battery or replaceable cells, turn on Bluetooth, and keep the mouse near the Mac. On a rechargeable model, connect the matching USB-C or Lightning cable to the Mac for about one minute to pair and charge, then disconnect it. Restart the Mac if Bluetooth cannot be enabled or pairing remains stuck.
How do I know which Magic Mouse cable I need?
Inspect the mouse. The 2024 USB-C model needs a compatible USB-C cable; older rechargeable models need a Lightning cable; earlier battery-powered models have no charging port and need replacement batteries instead. Also verify that the cable’s other end matches the Mac or power adapter.
Why did Magic Mouse scrolling stop working?
Scrolling uses a one-finger brush across the touch surface. In System Settings or System Preferences, open Mouse and adjust scrolling speed. Do not confuse vertical scrolling with the separate two-finger horizontal swipe. If the pointer does not move or gestures fail entirely, return to power and Bluetooth checks.
Why won’t my Magic Mouse click?
First determine whether primary or secondary clicking failed. A missing secondary click may only require enabling Secondary click in Mouse settings, and Control-click is an alternative. If the pointer moves but primary clicking fails on every item, Apple’s documented guidance supports professional service rather than a home repair.
Can I use a Magic Mouse while it is charging?
No. Apple states that “Magic Mouse is unavailable for use while charging.” Connect it to the Mac or a power adapter, allow it to charge and pair, then unplug it for wireless use.
What should I do if the Magic Mouse pointer is jittery or slow?
Turn the mouse off and clean the underside sensor with a clean, dry cloth. If using compressed air, keep the can upright. Check for wireless interference and adjust tracking speed in Mouse settings. Persistent tracking problems may require service.
Why is my Magic Mouse connected but not scrolling or clicking?
A connected pointer indicates that power and pairing are working, so check the one-finger scroll gesture, scrolling speed, and Secondary click configuration. A physical primary-click failure that persists across several items is a hardware symptom, not a scroll setting issue.
Do I need a software utility to fix Magic Mouse problems?
No special utility is established by Apple’s troubleshooting steps. Use macOS Bluetooth and Mouse settings, the correct cable or batteries, and safe sensor cleaning. Unresolved hardware, sensor, or Bluetooth faults should go to Apple Support or a qualified service provider.
The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the symptom: identify the port or battery design, restore power and Bluetooth, then check the one-finger scroll gesture, sensor, and click configuration. Use only a connector that matches your mouse, remember that the mouse cannot be used while charging, and seek service when a connected mouse still will not track or register a primary click.
