Use Apple’s troubleshooting order: verify that your exact iPad Air and Magic Keyboard are compatible, update the iPad to iPadOS 18.3 or later, disconnect and clean both Smart Connectors with a soft, lint-free cloth, remove any other case or cover, reconnect the keyboard, and restart the iPad if it still does not respond. These steps address both missing typing and missing trackpad input without assuming that the keyboard has failed.
Start with the two requirements that can prevent every other fix
A Magic Keyboard can appear correctly positioned yet remain unusable when the iPad model, keyboard model, or operating-system version is not supported. Check these items before treating the problem as a dirty connector or a hardware defect.

Confirm the exact iPad Air and keyboard models
Identify the precise generation of your iPad Air and the precise Magic Keyboard model. Apple’s compatibility guidance is based on the specific models, not simply on the fact that both products are called “iPad Air” or “Magic Keyboard.” The Apple troubleshooting page does not provide a complete generation-by-generation pairing table, so do not infer compatibility from similar dimensions, a magnetic attachment, or a keyboard that fits physically.
Use Apple’s compatibility information to verify the pairing before continuing. If the models do not belong together, cleaning or restarting cannot make that combination work. If you cannot identify one of the models, record the model name and generation shown on the device or its packaging and check that information against Apple’s compatibility details.

Check the iPadOS requirement
Apple states that Magic Keyboard for iPad Air requires iPadOS 18.3 or later. This is a minimum software requirement, not a recommendation to remain on 18.3; install the latest iPadOS version offered for your iPad.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Install the available update, then allow the iPad to complete its restart before testing the keyboard again.
If Software Update does not offer iPadOS 18.3 or later, the iPad may not support that release. Do not conclude that the keyboard is defective until you have checked whether your iPad can meet the stated requirement.
Apple’s connector, reconnection, and restart instructions are in Apple Support’s iPad keyboard troubleshooting guide.
Clean the Smart Connector and reconnect the keyboard
The Magic Keyboard for iPad Air communicates through the Smart Connector rather than a separate pairing process. Dust, lint, or an obstruction at either contact point can interrupt typing and trackpad input. Apple’s prescribed cleaning method is deliberately simple.
1. Disconnect the keyboard
Separate the iPad from the Magic Keyboard so that both connector areas are accessible. Do not clean while the two pieces are attached.

2. Clean both connector surfaces
With a soft, lint-free cloth, clean the Smart Connector on the keyboard and the Smart Connector on the back or edge of the iPad. Apple specifically names this cloth type in its instructions. Wipe gently; the published procedure does not call for liquid, abrasive material, scraping, or a chemical cleaner, so do not improvise a different cleaning method.
3. Remove another case or cover
Take off any separate iPad case, shell, folio, or cover before reconnecting. Apple specifically tells users to remove another case or cover when using Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard Folio. An additional layer can prevent the iPad and keyboard connectors from meeting correctly even when the keyboard itself is compatible.

Attach the iPad to the Magic Keyboard again after the connector surfaces are clean and the extra case or cover is removed. Give the iPad a moment to recognize the keyboard, then test a text field and the trackpad. If neither responds immediately, continue to the restart step rather than repeatedly forcing the connection.
5. Restart the iPad if there is still no response
Apple advises restarting the iPad when the keyboard does not immediately respond after reconnection. After the restart finishes, reconnect the keyboard once more and test typing and trackpad input.

- Disconnect. Separate the iPad and keyboard.
- Clean. Gently wipe the Smart Connector on the keyboard and the Smart Connector on the iPad with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Remove extra protection. Take off any other iPad case or cover.
- Reconnect. Attach the iPad to the keyboard and test both a typing action and a trackpad action.

What to check when the symptoms differ
Neither typing nor trackpad input works
Run the full sequence, beginning with model compatibility and the iPadOS requirement. Then clean both Smart Connectors, remove the extra case or cover, reconnect, and restart if needed. These are the conditions Apple identifies for a keyboard or folio that does not respond to typing or trackpad input.
Typing and trackpad input are both intermittent
Intermittent behavior still warrants the same connector and case checks. Disconnect the keyboard, clean both contacts with the specified cloth, remove any other cover, reconnect, and restart the iPad if recognition is not immediate. The official guidance does not establish a separate intermittent-failure diagnosis or a different repair procedure.
The keyboard does not respond immediately after attachment
Wait only long enough to determine whether the iPad recognizes the newly attached keyboard. If there is still no typing or trackpad response, follow Apple’s instruction to restart the iPad, then reconnect and test again. Avoid assuming that the lack of an immediate response proves the accessory is permanently damaged.
How to interpret an unsuccessful result
If the keyboard remains unresponsive after the published steps, the result is unresolved, not a confirmed hardware diagnosis. Apple’s article does not say that continued failure proves a failed keyboard, does not define a repair threshold, and does not provide a user repair procedure.

Before escalating, make sure all four conditions below are true:
- The exact iPad Air and Magic Keyboard models have been checked for compatibility.
- The iPad is running iPadOS 18.3 or later, or you have confirmed that the iPad cannot install that release.
- Both Smart Connector surfaces have been cleaned with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Any additional case or cover has been removed, the keyboard has been reconnected, and the iPad has been restarted when necessary.
If those conditions are satisfied and typing or trackpad input still does not work, contact Apple Support for model-specific next steps. Describe the exact models, the installed iPadOS version, whether typing, trackpad input, or both are affected, and which steps produced no change. This information lets support evaluate the situation without you claiming a fault that has not been confirmed.

Assuming every iPad Air uses the same keyboard
“iPad Air” covers multiple generations, and Magic Keyboard models are not universally interchangeable. Always verify the exact pairing. The absence of a complete pairing matrix in Apple’s troubleshooting article is a reason to check Apple’s compatibility information, not a reason to guess.
Skipping the software update
For this accessory, iPadOS 18.3 is a stated minimum. Cleaning the connector cannot compensate for an iPad that does not meet the software requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCleaning only one side
There are two contact surfaces: the Smart Connector on the keyboard and the one on the iPad. Apple’s instruction names both. Cleaning one and leaving the other untouched leaves a possible contact problem untested.

Leaving another case attached
Apple specifically calls for removing another iPad case or cover when using Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard Folio. Test the keyboard with that extra layer removed before deciding that the accessory needs service.
Using an unsuitable cleaning method
The published instruction is a soft, lint-free cloth. It does not instruct users to apply liquid, scrape the contacts, or use an abrasive. Stay with the documented method instead of risking damage to the connector surfaces.
Ordering a replacement too early
The troubleshooting guidance does not establish that a replacement keyboard is needed after one failed attempt. Complete the compatibility, iPadOS, connector, case, reconnection, and restart checks first, then ask Apple Support to assess an unresolved failure.
Quick reference
| Check | Apple’s instruction or requirement | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | The exact iPad and keyboard models must work together. | Verify both model generations using Apple’s compatibility information; do not infer a match from physical fit. |
| Operating system | Magic Keyboard for iPad Air requires iPadOS 18.3 or later. | Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest available iPadOS. |
| Connector condition | Clean the Smart Connector on both devices. | Disconnect the keyboard and use a soft, lint-free cloth on the keyboard connector and the iPad connector. |
| Case or cover | Remove another iPad case or cover when using Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard Folio. | Test with the additional case or cover removed. |
| Reconnection | Reconnect after cleaning and removing the extra cover. | Attach the iPad, then test typing and trackpad input. |
| Restart | Restart if the keyboard does not immediately respond after reconnection. | Restart the iPad, reconnect the keyboard, and test again. |
When Apple Support is the right next step
Apple Support is the appropriate escalation when the exact models are compatible, the iPad meets the iPadOS requirement, the connectors have been cleaned as directed, the extra cover is removed, and a restart does not restore typing or trackpad input. The official guidance does not promise a particular repair, replacement, or service outcome, so ask support to diagnose the unresolved connection problem rather than assuming the keyboard has failed.
Keep the model information and iPadOS version available, and tell the adviser whether neither input method works or whether the behavior is intermittent. That concise history shows that you followed the documented checks and helps support choose the next diagnostic step.
