When a Mac utility stops launching, freezes, quits, or loses a feature after macOS updates, work from least destructive to most invasive: record the exact symptom, quit and reopen the utility, restart the Mac, install updates for both the utility and macOS, check the app’s architecture and add-ons, treat any security warning separately, and reinstall only after confirming what data the app stores. If those steps fail, give the developer your macOS and app versions, Mac processor, exact message, and the steps already tried.
A major macOS upgrade can expose several different problems that look identical to a user: an old app build, an Intel-only utility on Apple silicon, an incompatible plug-in, a damaged installation, a permissions problem, or a security-registration block. There is no single universal fix, so diagnose the failure before deleting files or bypassing a warning.

Record what failed before changing anything
Write down the details while the behavior is easy to reproduce. “Stopped working” is not specific enough for a reliable diagnosis or a useful support request.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- What happens: the utility does not launch, opens and immediately quits, becomes unresponsive, or opens while one particular feature fails.
- When it began: note whether the first failure appeared immediately after the macOS upgrade or after a later app, plug-in, or configuration change.
- Versions: record the utility’s version and the macOS version. Include the full version number shown in the app or Finder rather than only “latest.”
- Mac hardware: record the model and whether it uses an Intel processor or Apple silicon.
- Exact wording: copy any alert, crash message, or security prompt. “App is damaged,” “developer cannot be verified,” and “not compatible” point to different branches.
Do not discard this information after a restart. A developer can use the timing, processor type, and exact message to distinguish a general crash from an architecture, component, permission, or security issue.

Use the low-risk fixes first
Apple’s general guidance for an app that stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or will not open starts with quitting, reopening, restarting, and updating. Follow these in order so you can tell which change solved the problem. Apple’s app troubleshooting steps describe this sequence.
1. Quit the utility and open it again
If a window is frozen, give the utility a moment to finish any visible operation, then quit it normally. Reopen it from its usual location. If it will not quit, use macOS’s standard force-quit command, then launch it again. A one-time hang after an operating-system change can clear without altering the app’s files.
Notice whether it fails at the same point every time. A crash before a window appears suggests launch, compatibility, or security trouble; a failure only when a feature is selected points more toward a plug-in, extension, permission, or feature-specific dependency.
2. Restart the Mac
Restart macOS after the utility has been closed. This reloads system services and helper processes that may not have been in a clean state after the upgrade. Test the utility before opening a large number of other apps, so the result is clear.

3. Update the utility from its legitimate source
Use the source that supplied the installation:
- App Store installation: open the App Store and check the Updates area for a newer release.
- Software obtained elsewhere: use the utility’s built-in updater, if it has one, or the publisher’s official website. Download only the current release intended for your Mac and macOS version.
Update separately installed plug-ins, extensions, drivers, helpers, and updater components as well. A new main application can still fail if one of these components remains on an older release.
4. Check for a macOS update
Open macOS Software Update and install any update offered for your Mac, following Apple’s restart instructions. An app publisher may have released a compatibility fix that assumes a later point release, while an operating-system update may correct a system-level issue. Do not assume that “I just upgraded” means the Mac is on the newest maintenance release.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
Use the behavior you recorded to choose the next branch rather than repeating random reinstalls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Observed behavior | What it can indicate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing appears when you launch it | Outdated build, incompatible architecture, damaged installation, missing privilege, or a security-registration block | Install the app update, inspect its Finder “Kind,” and read any alert carefully |
| The app opens and immediately quits | Crash during startup, incompatible plug-in or helper, or an app defect exposed by the new macOS | Update the utility and every separately installed component; capture the crash wording for the developer |
| The window freezes or shows “not responding” | A hung process or a feature waiting on an incompatible service | Quit, restart the Mac, then test the same action before changing app data |
| Only one feature fails | A plug-in, extension, permission, or feature-specific dependency | Check that component with its publisher and report the exact feature and error |
| A warning says the developer cannot be verified or the app is blocked | macOS security registration or an untrusted, damaged, or improperly signed app | Verify the source and authenticity; do not treat the warning as an ordinary crash |
These categories overlap. For example, an Intel-only utility may launch through Rosetta but fail when an old Intel plug-in is called, so architecture and component checks belong together on Apple silicon.

Check compatibility on Apple silicon Macs
This branch applies only if the Mac has an Apple silicon processor and the utility is Intel-based. Apple documents Rosetta as the translation technology that lets Intel apps run on Apple silicon. It is compatibility support, not proof that every plug-in or helper will work.
Find the application type in Finder
- Open Finder and locate the utility in the Applications folder or wherever it was installed.
- Select the app, then choose File > Get Info.
- Read the Kind field.
| Finder “Kind” | Meaning | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Application (Intel) | The app contains an Intel-only build and relies on translation on Apple silicon. | Ask the publisher for a Universal or Apple silicon release; update any Intel-only add-ons too. |
| Application (Universal) | The app includes Intel and Apple silicon code. | Install the newest release anyway, because an old Universal build or an outdated component can still fail. |
| Application (Apple silicon) | The app includes a native Apple silicon build. | Look next at updates, components, permissions, damaged files, or security registration rather than assuming Rosetta is involved. |
Apple recommends replacing an Intel app with a Universal or Apple silicon version for better performance and future compatibility. Check the publisher’s compatibility notes before upgrading further, especially when the utility is essential to your workflow. Apple’s Intel-app guidance explains these labels and the role of Rosetta.
Inspect plug-ins, extensions, and helpers separately
A utility can be Universal while one of its separately installed plug-ins, extensions, add-ons, drivers, or updater tools is Intel-only or obsolete. List the components the utility uses, then check each one with its publisher. Updating just the main application will not replace a component installed in another location. If the publisher has no compatible component, ask whether the feature is supported on your macOS release before removing anything.
Do not plan around Rosetta indefinitely
Apple’s current support guidance says Rosetta is available on Apple silicon through macOS 27. Starting with macOS 28, Apple says Rosetta functionality will be limited to certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. That future, version-sensitive policy means Rosetta should not be treated as a durable fix for a productivity or system utility. Confirm a native or Universal update with the developer before moving to an affected release. Recheck Apple’s guidance immediately before an upgrade because release policy can change. Apple’s Rosetta documentation contains the current macOS 27/macOS 28 qualification.

Handle security prompts as a separate decision
macOS can refuse to open an app because it is not registered with an identified developer, appears damaged, is not installed correctly, or requires a newer release. Apple also notes that a user may lack the privileges required by an app. These causes are not interchangeable with an ordinary crash. Apple’s “If you can’t open an app on Mac” guidance describes these possibilities.
First confirm that you obtained the utility from the genuine publisher or the App Store and that the downloaded file is the publisher’s current release. Compare the publisher’s instructions and support channel rather than relying on a download mirror or a message that tells you to disable protections.
Do not blindly select an override such as Open Anyway. Apple warns: “Overriding security settings to open an app is the most common way that a Mac gets infected with malware.” — Apple Support, Open an app by overriding security settings. The warning concerns the risk of bypassing verification, not the frequency of post-update app failures. If the source cannot be authenticated, stop and ask the publisher for a verified release or explanation. If you do decide an override is appropriate for software you have independently verified, follow Apple’s documented procedure and understand that you are accepting the security risk. Apple’s security-override instructions explain the checks and their implications.

Reinstall only after checking app data
If quitting, restarting, and updating do not restore the utility, reinstalling can replace damaged or incompatible program files. It is not automatically harmless: Apple warns that deleting an app may remove data stored in that app. Before you delete anything, read the utility publisher’s backup, export, and migration instructions. Export settings, profiles, licenses, templates, databases, or other irreplaceable content if the utility stores them locally.
Best Value
- Confirm that you have an export or backup of any data the utility owns, and note where that backup is stored.
- Record the current app version, license information, and any plug-ins or extensions that must be reinstalled.
- Obtain the installer from the App Store or the utility publisher’s official website—the same trusted source used originally.
- Remove the existing app only when the publisher’s instructions and your backup make that safe.
- Install the current release, then reinstall only compatible components from their publishers.
- Launch the utility and test the previously failing action before restoring optional add-ons or old settings.
Never use a third-party download mirror to obtain a replacement installer. If the utility’s data location or removal procedure is unclear, pause and ask the publisher before deleting the app.
When permissions or installation state may be involved
An app can fail because it lacks a required privilege, is damaged, or was not installed correctly. An update or reinstall may address some of these conditions, but do not infer that a permission problem is fixed merely because the app launches once. If an alert names a folder, device, service, or permission, preserve the exact wording and ask the publisher which access is required and why.
Avoid deleting random preference files, system extensions, or support folders as a trial. Those files can contain configuration or data, and removing them without the publisher’s procedure can create a second problem. Use the utility’s documented reset or migration method when one exists.

Apple directs users to the app developer when its general steps do not resolve the problem. Send one concise report through the publisher’s official support channel. Include:
- the exact utility name and version;
- the macOS version and the date the problem began;
- the Mac model and processor type (Intel or Apple silicon);
- the exact alert text or a precise description of the crash, freeze, or failed feature;
- whether Finder lists the app as Intel, Universal, or Apple silicon;
- the versions of plug-ins, extensions, helpers, or drivers involved;
- whether the app came from the App Store or the publisher’s site;
- the steps already attempted: quit/reopen, restart, app update, macOS update, compatibility check, and reinstall if performed; and
- whether app data was backed up or exported before any removal.
This information prevents the developer from sending generic instructions that you have already tried and lets them match the failure to a known compatibility or component issue. Keep the original alert and any crash report available if support requests them.
Choose the next action by risk and likely cause
| Action | Risk to app data | Reversible? | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quit and reopen | Very low | Yes | A transient hang or one-time launch failure |
| Restart the Mac | Very low | Yes | Reloading services after the macOS upgrade |
| Update the utility, components, and macOS | Low, but review release notes for the utility | Usually, subject to the publisher’s rollback policy | Known compatibility fixes and obsolete code |
| Inspect architecture and add-ons | None | Yes | Apple silicon Macs or failures involving plug-ins and helpers |
| Verify a security prompt and source | None until you choose an override | Yes if you stop; an override increases security risk | Developer-verification or damaged-app warnings |
| Delete and reinstall | Potential loss of app-stored data | Only if backups and the publisher’s procedure allow recovery | Damaged installation or an update that did not replace old files |
| Contact the developer | None | Yes | Persistent, app-specific failures or unclear causes |
Prepare before the next macOS upgrade
For utilities you depend on, check the publisher’s supported macOS versions and Apple silicon status before installing a major upgrade. Export important app data, record licenses and versions, and inventory plug-ins, extensions, and helper tools. After upgrading, test the utility and its critical features before relying on it for time-sensitive work. This preparation does not guarantee compatibility, but it gives you a clean recovery path if the publisher needs to issue an update.
The practical rule is simple: restart and update first; investigate architecture and components when the Mac is Apple silicon; treat security blocks as trust decisions; protect app data before reinstalling; and escalate with precise technical details when the utility remains broken.
