How to fix a laptop that runs slowly after a few years (Windows and Mac)

A laptop that has become slow is not automatically worn out. First find out whether the bottleneck is the processor, memory, storage, a startup app, malware, an incompatible application, or a failing disk. Use Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on a Mac while the slowdown is happening, apply the low-risk software fixes, and only then consider an SSD, more RAM, or a replacement computer. Back up important files before deleting data, resetting the operating system, or changing a drive.

Why is my laptop so slow after a few years?

Slowness can develop gradually as storage fills, more programs launch with the operating system, applications become more demanding, and the hardware falls behind current software. It can also begin suddenly because of a runaway process, malware, an incompatible application, or a disk problem. Microsoft identifies low storage, startup and background activity, outdated software, and aging hardware as common causes on Windows. Apple points to low startup-disk space, heavy memory demands, unused or incompatible applications, and possible disk problems on Mac.

  • Operating system: Windows or macOS, including the version if you know it.
  • Timing: slow startup, slow app launches, sluggish web browsing, or slow performance during sustained work such as video editing.
  • Onset: a sudden change suggests a process, application, malware, update, or disk problem; a gradual decline more often points to storage pressure, heavier software, memory limits, or aging hardware.

The observation that matters is which resource is saturated while the laptop is slow. A high CPU reading implicates active computation; heavy memory use or swapping points to insufficient working memory; sustained disk activity points to storage work or a disk bottleneck. A brief spike during an update is different from a resource remaining heavily loaded during ordinary use.

How do I check what is causing the slowdown?

Windows: use Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On Processes, watch the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns while reproducing the problem. Sort by each column to identify the process using the most resources.
  3. Open Performance and observe CPU, memory, and disk activity for several minutes rather than relying on a single instant.
  4. Open Startup apps and note programs that launch automatically but are not needed immediately after sign-in.

Write down the application name and resource that stays high. Do not end a process merely because its name is unfamiliar; system processes and security tools can be legitimate. Close a program normally first, and investigate a process before disabling or uninstalling it.

Mac: use Activity Monitor

  1. Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities.
  2. Use the CPU view while the Mac is slow to identify applications or processes doing sustained work.
  3. Open the Memory view and examine the Memory Pressure graph. Apple says memory pressure is more useful than unused-memory alone for judging whether the Mac needs more RAM.
  4. Check swap activity and disk activity when the computer is repeatedly reading or writing storage during ordinary tasks.

Apple notes, “When you have free or unused memory, your computer performance does not necessarily improve.” A Mac can therefore have apparently free memory and still be functioning normally; persistent high memory pressure and swapping are stronger evidence of a memory bottleneck.

Use the symptom and measurement together

What you notice Windows check Mac check Likely direction
One program makes the whole laptop sluggish Task Manager > Processes, sorted by CPU or Memory Activity Monitor CPU or Memory view Quit, update, repair, or remove the offending application after confirming what it is
Apps slow down when many tabs or programs are open Task Manager > Performance > Memory Activity Monitor > Memory Pressure and swap activity Reduce simultaneous workloads; investigate a RAM upgrade only if the model supports it
Opening files and starting programs involve constant disk activity Task Manager > Performance > Disk Activity Monitor disk activity Free space, check for a disk problem, and investigate an SSD only when the existing drive is replaceable and is the bottleneck
Startup is slow but later use is acceptable Task Manager > Startup apps Login items and applications that open at login Remove only unnecessary automatic launches and check for updates or malware

What should I do first on a slow Windows laptop?

These steps are reversible and should precede hardware changes. Labels can differ slightly between Windows releases.

  1. Install updates. Open Settings and use Windows Update to install available Windows updates. Check optional driver updates when they are offered and appropriate for the laptop. Restart when prompted.
  2. Run a malware scan. Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, and run a Quick scan. Follow the security app’s instructions if it finds a threat.
  3. Free temporary storage. Open Settings > System > Storage. Review temporary files and remove items you no longer need. Read each category before deleting it; do not remove personal files simply because they are large.
  4. Uninstall unused applications. In Settings, open the installed-apps or Apps section, sort through programs you no longer use, and uninstall them. Keep drivers, security software, and utilities whose purpose you have not verified.
  5. Disable unnecessary startup apps. Return to Task Manager > Startup apps. Disable only programs that do not need to launch at sign-in. Disabling a startup entry does not uninstall the application.
  6. Close unused programs and browser tabs. Large numbers of tabs, video calls, creative applications, and background sync tools can consume memory even when they are not visible.
  7. Restart. A restart clears transient application states and completes updates. It is a diagnostic step, not a cure for a persistent hardware bottleneck.

Microsoft cautions that “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” If resource use remains high after cleanup and updates, move to the diagnostic and upgrade decisions below rather than repeating the same cleanup.

What should I do first on a slow Mac?

  1. Check startup-disk space. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. Review the categories consuming space and remove or move data only after you have identified what it is.
  2. Move large files when appropriate. Transfer archives, videos, photos, or other infrequently used files to another disk or external storage if you have a reliable copy and can access it when needed.
  3. Quit unused applications. Close applications you are not using, especially those that are incompatible with your macOS version or that continue consuming CPU or memory in the background.
  4. Check memory pressure. Activity Monitor > Memory shows whether the workload is creating sustained pressure and swap activity. Reduce simultaneous apps and tabs before buying memory.
  5. Investigate suspected disk issues. Open Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities. Select the relevant disk or volume and use the available First Aid verification or repair procedure. If Disk Utility reports a problem it cannot repair, preserve your backup and seek model-specific service guidance.
  6. Restart after changes. A restart can complete updates and clear a temporary process, but recurring slowness still requires checking the resource that becomes saturated.

How can I clean up storage without losing files?

Storage cleanup is useful when the startup disk is nearly full, but deletion is irreversible in practice once trash or recycle-bin contents are removed. Before deleting personal files, resetting the operating system, or replacing a drive, make a current backup. Microsoft recommends backing up a Windows PC; Apple recommends moving files to another disk or external storage when freeing startup-disk space.

  • Use an existing cloud or local backup method if it is current and you can restore from it.
  • If you use an external drive, confirm that important folders have actually copied and can be opened before deleting the originals.
  • Do not treat a backup disk as a reason to erase the laptop; it is protection against an error during cleanup or repair.
  • Keep enough local space for the operating system, applications, updates, and working files. The support guidance does not establish a universal percentage or gigabyte threshold, so judge the result by available space and whether disk activity improves.

Will adding an SSD make an old laptop faster?

It can, but only when the laptop has a replaceable hard disk drive and storage is the limiting resource. HP identifies a slow HDD as one possible reason for high disk use and describes an SSD as a possible upgrade; that does not mean every laptop accepts an internal SSD or that every slowdown will improve by the same amount.

Check these points before buying

  • Confirm the exact model and whether its drive is serviceable. Some laptops have storage that is difficult or impossible to replace.
  • Match the drive interface and physical size specified by the manufacturer. An apparently similar connector or form factor may not be compatible.
  • Check firmware, operating-system, capacity, and cloning or reinstallation requirements for that model.
  • Plan how data will be copied and verify your backup before opening the computer or removing the old drive.
  • Compare the drive cost and installation effort with the laptop’s age, battery condition, physical condition, and software support.

If Task Manager or Activity Monitor shows a disk bottleneck but the drive is already an SSD, first investigate free space, background processes, application behavior, and possible disk errors. Replacing an SSD without evidence of a storage problem is unlikely to address a CPU or memory limitation.

Will adding RAM make an old laptop faster?

More RAM helps when the workload is creating sustained memory pressure and swapping. First close unused applications and tabs, then repeat the Activity Monitor or Task Manager observation. A memory upgrade is not justified by a low amount of “free” memory alone.

Verify upgradeability and compatibility

  • Identify the exact laptop model and check its manufacturer documentation for supported memory capacity and module type.
  • On a Mac, Apple says System Information can show whether memory is upgradeable. Some Mac models do not offer user-upgradeable memory.
  • Do not mix a speculative module purchase with a drive replacement. Change one limiting component at a time so you can tell whether the bottleneck changed.
  • Back up first and follow the model’s service instructions. A compatible module and correct installation matter more than a larger number on the package.

If memory pressure is normal but disk activity is sustained, RAM will not solve the storage bottleneck. If CPU use is persistently high from a workload you cannot reduce, neither RAM nor an SSD will turn an aging processor into a newer one.

When should I stop upgrading and replace the laptop?

Software cleanup has diminishing returns when the hardware cannot meet the workload or the operating system is no longer supported. Microsoft lists inability to receive current updates, frequent fan noise, repeated errors, long startup or shutdown, low storage, and consistently high resource use as signs to consider moving to a new PC.

  • Support: the laptop cannot run a currently supported operating system or cannot receive important updates.
  • Reliability: it shows repeated errors, disk warnings, crashes, or thermal problems after basic troubleshooting.
  • Workload: ordinary tasks keep the CPU, memory, or disk saturated even after unnecessary programs are removed.
  • Economics: an upgrade, battery, repair, and installation effort approach the cost of a newer computer with longer support.
  • Physical condition: the display, keyboard, hinges, battery, or ports are failing in addition to the performance issue.

Keep your files backed up before migration. A replacement decision is about support, reliability, workload, and total cost—not a single benchmark or an arbitrary age.

What does Windows 10 reaching end of support mean for performance?

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that release. End of support does not, by itself, explain why a laptop became slow, but it changes the security and maintenance decision. Check which currently supported operating-system options the exact machine can run before investing heavily in it.

Fixes for common slowdown patterns

The laptop became slow suddenly

Reopen Task Manager or Activity Monitor while the issue occurs. Look for a process that changed recently, an update still running, a security alert, or a newly installed application. Run the Windows Security scan on Windows; on Mac, quit or update an application that is incompatible with the current macOS. If disk errors are suspected on a Mac, use Disk Utility’s verification or repair procedure and protect the backup before further work.

Only startup is slow

Review Windows Task Manager > Startup apps and disable only entries that do not need to launch automatically. On Mac, review applications and login items that open at sign-in. A long startup followed by normal performance usually calls for reducing automatic launches rather than replacing hardware.

Browsers become sluggish with many tabs

Close tabs and applications you are not using, then watch memory use or memory pressure again. Remove extensions you no longer need and update the browser through its normal update mechanism. If the laptop is responsive with a lighter workload but not with the required number of tabs, investigate supported RAM capacity rather than assuming the disk is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Opening files and applications is slow

Check available startup-disk space and sustained disk activity. Free or move files safely, investigate a suspected disk problem, and consider an internal SSD only after confirming that the existing drive is a replaceable HDD and that the model supports the proposed replacement.

The fan runs constantly

Use the CPU view in Task Manager or Activity Monitor to find sustained computation. Close the responsible application if it is not needed, install relevant updates, and check for malware on Windows. Persistent high CPU use during the workload you actually need can indicate that the laptop is past its practical capacity.

A safe order of operations

  1. Identify the operating system, the exact slowdown pattern, and whether the change was sudden or gradual.
  2. Back up important files before destructive cleanup, a reset, or hardware work.
  3. Measure CPU, memory, and disk use while the laptop is slow.
  4. Install updates, scan Windows for malware, remove temporary files, uninstall unused apps, reduce startup items, close unused programs, and restart.
  5. On Mac, check Storage, memory pressure, incompatible apps, and Disk Utility when disk trouble is suspected.
  6. Recheck the same resource. If storage remains the bottleneck, verify whether a replaceable HDD can be upgraded to a compatible SSD. If memory pressure remains high, verify that the exact model accepts additional RAM.
  7. If support, reliability, workload, or total repair cost no longer make sense, preserve the backup and plan a move to a newer supported computer.

This sequence separates problems you can usually address yourself from limits that require a compatible part, professional service, or replacement. It also prevents an expensive upgrade from being chosen before the evidence shows which component is holding the laptop back.
