A Kindle update that will not download is usually caused by a Wi-Fi connection problem, an unsupported network setting, or choosing software for the wrong Kindle generation. First restore a reliable connection, then match the exact model to Amazon’s current software listing. If wireless updating still fails, Amazon provides a computer-transfer method that installs the model-specific file without relying on the Kindle’s download process.
This guide applies to Kindle e-readers, not the Kindle phone, tablet, or desktop apps. Follow the checks in order so you do not install an incompatible file or erase your books unnecessarily.

Start with the shortest safe diagnosis
Kindle e-readers are designed to update over Wi-Fi. Amazon states: “Software updates automatically download and install on your Kindle when connected wirelessly.” If that process has stalled, do not immediately reset the device. Use this order:
- Confirm that the problem is on a Kindle e-reader and note its exact model and generation.
- Repair the Wi-Fi connection, including compatibility checks for the router’s band and security mode.
- Compare the installed software version with the version listed for that precise model on Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page.
- If the wireless download still does not work, transfer the matching update file from a computer and start Update Your Kindle from Settings.
- Keep the reader connected to power during a large download or update, then allow time for books to index after the restart.
A successful phone-hotspot test is especially useful: if the Kindle updates on the hotspot but not on your home network, the Kindle is probably working and the home router or its settings need attention.

1. Make sure you are troubleshooting an e-reader software update
The update catalog is organized by Kindle e-reader model and generation. A Kindle app can update through its host operating system, but it does not use the e-reader firmware files described here. Check the physical reader and write down the model name and generation before downloading anything. Selecting a file because the product name merely looks similar is unsafe; Amazon’s manual process depends on the file being intended for that exact device.
Do not treat a version number seen in a forum, an old support article, or on another Kindle as proof that your reader is current. Amazon’s live listing is the authority for the model you own, and the available version can change over time.
2. Repair Wi-Fi before trying the update again
A failed update download is often a failed network connection in disguise. Work through these checks while the Kindle is near the router.

- Confirm that Airplane Mode is off.
- Check that the Kindle is connected to the intended network name (SSID), not a similarly named guest network.
- Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully if the network credentials may have changed.
- Test the same network with another device. If several devices are offline, the problem is broader than the Kindle.
After correcting a setting, restart the Kindle and retry the update. A restart clears a stalled connection without deleting books or registrations.
Improve the radio connection
Move the Kindle close to the router and reduce nearby sources of wireless interference. A weak or intermittent signal can let ordinary browsing work while a large software file repeatedly fails. Restart the router, wait about two minutes for it to reconnect to the internet, then reconnect the Kindle and try again.

Check band and security compatibility
Amazon says Kindle devices do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi bands. It also says Kindle devices released before 2021 do not support 5 GHz or WPA3 encryption. Do not apply the pre-2021 limitation to newer Kindles automatically: use the release generation of your particular reader when deciding which network to use. If your router combines several bands under one network name, create or select a compatible 2.4 GHz network for an older Kindle, or temporarily use a network with security settings the device supports. Use a phone hotspot as a diagnostic, not a permanent fix
Enable a smartphone hotspot with a password, connect the Kindle to it, and retry the update. If the download starts or completes there, the result points to the home router, its band, its security mode, or its internet service rather than to the Kindle firmware. If the hotspot also fails, continue with the model and software checks below.

If the Kindle does not show that portal automatically, open a simple website in the Kindle browser so the network’s sign-in screen can appear, then complete the sign-in before retrying the update. Captive-portal networks can otherwise look connected while blocking downloads.
3. Match the installed version to the exact Kindle model
Open Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page and locate the exact model and generation. Compare the software version installed on your reader with the version shown in that model’s entry. Download only the file linked in that entry.
Amazon’s listing can include extra prerequisites or instructions for older devices. That is why a single “latest Kindle version” number is misleading: the current file for one generation may not be the correct file for another.

These figures are time-sensitive observations from Amazon’s listing accessed in 2026, not a universal current version. If your installed number already matches the live entry for your model, the update may not be pending at all; investigate the connection or registration symptom instead of forcing another installation.

4. Install the update manually from a computer
When the Kindle cannot download the file itself, Amazon’s supported alternative is to connect it to a computer. Amazon describes this process in Manually Update Your Kindle E-Reader Software. You need the exact model-specific update file and a USB cable that can transfer data. The cable included with the Kindle is the one Amazon’s instructions expect.
- Download the correct file. On the computer, open Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page. Find the precise model and generation, then download the file linked in that entry. Do not choose a file for a different Kindle, even if the models look alike.
- Connect the reader. Turn on the Kindle and connect it to the computer with the included charging cable. The reader should appear as a removable drive named Kindle.
- Copy the file to the drive. Drag the downloaded update file onto the Kindle drive. Let the transfer finish completely before disconnecting. A file that is still copying can leave the reader without a usable update.
- Eject safely. Use the computer’s safe-eject command. If you are updating a Kindle Scribe, use its on-screen Disconnect option as Amazon specifies.
- Disconnect the cable. Once the drive has been ejected, unplug the cable from the Kindle.
- Start the installation on the reader. From the Kindle home screen, tap Menu, tap Settings, tap Menu again, choose Update Your Kindle, and confirm with OK.
- Wait without interrupting it. The screen should show Your Kindle is Updating. Amazon says the Kindle restarts automatically when the update finishes. Do not remove power or repeatedly press buttons while that process is running.
Do not rename, unzip, modify, or install a file unless Amazon’s model-specific entry explicitly instructs you to do so. The cited manual procedure does not call for any of those actions. If the update command is unavailable after copying the file, return to the model entry and verify both the model and that the transfer completed before ejection.
Computer and cable issues
If the Kindle never appears as a drive, try another USB port and reconnect the cable after restarting both devices. A cable can provide charging but lack working data conductors, so use the included cable or a replacement explicitly verified for data transfer and the connector on your Kindle. Most owners do not need to buy a cable; consider one only when the included cable is missing or cannot transfer files.
For Kindle Scribe owners using a Mac with OS X 10.7 or later, Amazon notes that additional software may be required to transfer files. Follow the requirement in the Scribe instructions on the manual-update page rather than assuming that charging alone provides file access.

5. Keep the Kindle powered during and after the update
A large download and the installation process can use more battery than ordinary reading. Amazon’s battery guidance notes that software updates can affect battery use; keep the reader plugged in through the download or update period whenever practical. If the battery is critically low, charge it before starting the manual process so the device can restart safely.
After the update completes and the Kindle restarts, Amazon recommends plugging it in and letting it sit overnight so books can index. Indexing can continue after the software installation appears finished, particularly when the library is large. Leave the reader connected and idle during that period rather than interpreting temporary battery or search activity as a second failed update. The command can remain unavailable when the file is not on the Kindle drive, the transfer is incomplete, or the file does not match the device. Reconnect the reader and check the following, in this order:
- The downloaded file came from the exact model-and-generation entry on Amazon’s update page.
- The file is on the top level of the Kindle drive, not inside a folder created during the download.
- The computer finished copying before you ejected the drive.
- You safely ejected the reader, disconnected the cable, and reopened Menu > Settings before checking for Update Your Kindle.
- The installed version is older than the version listed for your model; if it is already the same, there may be no update to install.
Do not force the installation with a different model’s file. A model mismatch is a reason to stop and recheck the listing, not a reason to try several files.
Registration, login, and clock errors that accompany an update failure
Sometimes the update symptom appears alongside a message saying that the Kindle cannot register or sign in. Amazon’s registration guidance recommends checking four things: the device’s displayed time, its Wi-Fi connection, its software version, and the Amazon account credentials being entered. An incorrect clock can prevent account authentication even when web pages load, while an outdated version can cause a registration problem to persist. Handle those checks separately from the firmware transfer: first establish a stable connection and correct credentials, then use the model-specific update route.
When the home network is the real fault
If the Kindle works on a phone hotspot but fails on the home network, focus on the router configuration and internet service. Use a compatible band and security mode, move the reader closer to the router, and restart the router before trying again. If multiple devices also cannot connect, Amazon advises contacting your internet service provider. The Kindle itself is unlikely to be the only cause when every device on that network is offline.
Why a factory reset should not be your first move
A factory reset removes personal settings and requires the Kindle to be set up again, so it is a poor first response to a download failure. Amazon places reset-level action after the Wi-Fi troubleshooting sequence has failed. Complete the connection checks, model verification, and manual transfer attempt first. If those steps do not resolve the problem, use Amazon’s support instructions for the specific symptom rather than erasing the device speculatively.
A final, model-safe checklist
- Device confirmed as a Kindle e-reader, not an app.
- Airplane Mode off; network name and password verified.
- Kindle tested near the router and, if necessary, on a phone hotspot.
- 6 GHz avoided; pre-2021 Kindles not placed on 5 GHz or WPA3 networks.
- Exact model and generation matched to Amazon’s live update entry.
- Installed version compared with that entry; time-sensitive numbers not assumed to apply universally.
- Correct file copied to the Kindle drive with a data-capable cable.
- Drive safely ejected before using Menu > Settings > Menu > Update Your Kindle.
- Reader kept powered during the process and allowed to index books afterward.
- Registration errors checked for time, Wi-Fi, software, and credentials before restarting.
Following that sequence separates a network failure from a model-selection mistake and gives you Amazon’s supported offline installation path without resorting to an unnecessary reset.
