Enter ;log in the Kindle search bar: if it responds, reinstall the hotfix and then KUAL or the affected extensions. If it does not respond, stop using generic fixes and select a re-jailbreak method that explicitly supports your exact Kindle model and firmware.
Start with the right diagnosis
A missing launcher or extension is not proof that the jailbreak disappeared. Kindle updates commonly change the components that let a jailbroken system load its tools. The KindleModding FAQ separates these situations: a working ;log check indicates that the jailbreak is still present, while a nonresponsive check means you need to investigate a model- and firmware-specific recovery route.

Do not factory-reset, downgrade, or copy a random jailbreak package before checking status. Those actions can create a second problem and may be impossible to reverse on your firmware.
Record your Kindle’s details before changing anything
Recovery instructions depend on information that is not interchangeable between Kindle generations. Write down the following before installing files or resetting the device:

- Model: Open Settings, choose Device Options, then Device Info. Record the model name, generation if shown, and serial prefix.
- Firmware version: Record the complete version number, including every digit after the decimal. Firmware branches that look similar can support different methods.
- Original jailbreak method: Note whether you used WinterBreak, WinterBreak2, or another community method. The original method can determine which recovery options remain available.
- Update path: Record whether the Kindle updated normally, updated after you manually transferred an official file, or was reset while update blocking was enabled.
- Reset history: Note whether a factory reset occurred. A normal post-update failure and a reset-related “Update Failed” screen require different procedures.
- Computer and cable: Confirm that you have a computer and a USB cable that supports data transfer, not merely charging, if a file-transfer recovery becomes necessary.
The MobileRead firmware overview lists jailbreak methods beside the model and firmware combinations they support or have been tested with. Use those compatibility details rather than assuming that a method working on a nearby model will work on yours.
Check whether the jailbreak is still active
- Wake the Kindle and open the search field.
- Enter
;logexactly, including the semicolon, and submit it. - Observe whether the Kindle responds. A response means the underlying jailbreak is still detected; no response means you must treat the jailbreak as absent until a device-specific guide says otherwise.
The check is a diagnostic, not a command to repeat continuously. If it responds, do not start a full re-jailbreak. If it does not, do not infer that a downgrade or a package for another model will work.
If ;log responds: restore the post-jailbreak tools
Reinstall the hotfix first
The KindleModding FAQ recommends reinstalling the hotfix after an update. The hotfix is the component that allows the jailbreak to survive or function correctly on the updated system. Obtain the hotfix package from the current instructions for your exact model and firmware, transfer it using the documented method, and complete any restart the guide requires.

Firmware changes can require a different package, and the wrong package can leave the Kindle in the same state or introduce additional failures.
Restore KUAL only after the hotfix is working
Once the hotfix is installed, test the KUAL launcher. If KUAL no longer opens, reinstall the KUAL package specified by the current device instructions. Keep the launcher package matched to the Kindle’s firmware architecture; copying an arbitrary older launcher can produce a misleading “nothing happened” result even though the jailbreak remains active.
Reinstall only the extensions that fail
An update can break individual extensions without affecting KUAL or the jailbreak. Open KUAL and test extensions one at a time. Reinstall the extensions that fail, using versions that explicitly support the updated firmware. Preserve configuration or content files only when the extension’s documentation says they are compatible; otherwise, back them up before replacing the extension.
If KUAL opens but one extension immediately closes, shows no screen, or disappears from the menu, treat that as an extension compatibility issue rather than evidence that the jailbreak vanished.

A nonresponsive status check means the previous jailbreak is not currently available, but it does not identify the cause. The correct recovery method depends on the exact model, firmware, original jailbreak, and whether a reset occurred. Use the current KindleModding instructions and the MobileRead firmware overview to find a method whose compatibility statement includes all of those details.

Do not assume a downgrade is available
The KindleModding FAQ states that a stock Kindle cannot be downgraded before it has been jailbroken. A firmware file that works for one generation may be rejected by another, and forcing a downgrade can leave the device unable to boot normally. Treat downgrade instructions as conditional, model-specific procedures, never as a universal first step.
Prepare for a re-jailbreak
- Charge the Kindle sufficiently to complete several restarts.
- Back up books, documents, and any configuration files you can access normally.
- Disconnect unrelated USB devices from the computer.
- Download only files named by the current guide for the recorded model and firmware.
- Keep the Kindle connected with a known-good data cable and eject it cleanly after every transfer.
Follow the selected guide in order. Do not combine files from different jailbreak methods or skip a cleanup step because the filenames look familiar.
Choose between repair, re-jailbreak, and reset recovery
These routes solve different failures. A component repair is the least disruptive option because it keeps the detected jailbreak and replaces only the hotfix, launcher, or extension. A full re-jailbreak is appropriate only when ;log does not respond and the selected method explicitly supports the device. Reset recovery is a separate path for a Kindle that was factory-reset while update blocking was active and now shows an update error.

The special case: “Update Failed” after a reset
A factory reset is not a normal troubleshooting step for a post-update launcher failure. Amazon says that completing a factory reset deregisters the Kindle from your Amazon account, so you must register it again before ordinary use. Amazon’s reset instructions do not explain how to preserve or restore a jailbreak.
The KindleModding reset-recovery guide describes an additional risk: resetting a jailbroken Kindle while updates are blocked can prevent an official update file from installing normally. If the Kindle is stuck on an Update Failed screen after that combination of events, use the guide’s separate recovery path rather than the ordinary hotfix procedure.
Community recovery sequence for the reset-related failure
- Identify the exact Kindle model and firmware shown by the device or by the records you made before the reset.
- Obtain the official firmware file corresponding to that model and firmware branch, following the recovery guide’s compatibility instructions.
- Connect the Kindle to a computer with a USB data cable.
- Transfer the required firmware file to the Kindle’s visible USB storage, placing it where the guide specifies.
- Eject the Kindle from the computer’s operating system.
- Unplug the cable and reboot the Kindle.
- Wait for the installation or recovery process to finish before reconnecting or interrupting power.
This is community guidance, not an Amazon recovery procedure. If the file is rejected, the screen remains unchanged, or the model and firmware cannot be confirmed, stop and verify compatibility rather than trying another firmware file at random.
What you need for USB file transfer
A computer and a cable that carries data are the only physical requirements identified for the USB portions of these procedures. A charging-only cable will not expose the Kindle’s storage, so check that the device appears as a drive before transferring anything. Many Kindle owners already have a suitable cable; buying one is optional, not a routine part of jailbreak recovery. If you do need one, match the connector to the Kindle and confirm that the product supports data transfer.

Transfer one documented file at a time, eject the Kindle through the computer’s operating system, and then unplug it when the guide says to do so. Do not leave several firmware files or packages on the device “just in case.” A leftover file can be mistaken for the intended update, and the correct cleanup rule differs by jailbreak method.

WinterBreak2: follow its own post-process rules
WinterBreak2 is a browser-based jailbreak with instructions that differ from other methods. Its guide says to copy the required files to Kindle storage from a computer, open the experimental browser, and run the jailbreak from there. The same guide says that updates are blocked automatically after the process and instructs users to remove leftover update .bin files.
Those update-blocking and cleanup behaviors belong to WinterBreak2. Do not apply them to a Kindle jailbroken with another method. The guide also points some devices below firmware 5.16.4 toward the original WinterBreak method. Confirm both the device and firmware before choosing between them; “below 5.16.4” is not a promise that every model on that firmware can use the same package.
Firmware architecture can break extensions even when the jailbreak survives
The KindleModding FAQ notes that firmware beginning with 5.16.3 uses hard-float architecture for most processing tasks. Many extensions are not interchangeable between hard-float and soft-float firmware. An extension that worked before the update may therefore fail after the update even though ;log responds and KUAL opens normally.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Re-jailbreaking before checking status
Repeating a jailbreak can overwrite working components or create conflicting files. Always run the ;log check first and use the result to choose between component repair and a full re-jailbreak.
Installing a package from a different firmware branch
Model names alone are not sufficient. A package can be correct for the same generation but wrong for the installed firmware or processor architecture. Match every package to the current guide’s model and firmware requirements.
Factory-resetting to fix a launcher
A reset deregisters the Kindle and can complicate official update installation when update blocking is active. It does not restore a jailbreak and should not be the first response to a missing KUAL menu.
Leaving update files on the device
WinterBreak2 specifically tells users to remove leftover update .bin files after its process. Follow that instruction when using WinterBreak2, but do not assume that another jailbreak has the same file layout or cleanup requirement.

Assuming Amazon support policy guarantees jailbreak compatibility
Amazon publishes a policy of at least four years of software security updates from purchase new from Amazon as the seller, or until a later device-specific date listed by Amazon. Amazon may continue support afterward, subject to technical and other limits. That policy describes official update support; it does not promise that an update will preserve a community jailbreak, hotfix, launcher, or extension.

Can I update a jailbroken Kindle?
An update can be installed only through a method and firmware combination that remains supported. Before accepting it, record the current setup and check the current KindleModding and MobileRead compatibility information. Afterward, run ;log before assuming that every tool was removed.
Should I factory-reset first?
No. A reset deregisters the Kindle and does not restore its jailbreak. It can also create the separate blocked-update failure described above. Reserve it for a documented reason, and record the model and firmware first.

Can I downgrade a stock Kindle to get the jailbreak back?
The KindleModding FAQ says a stock Kindle cannot be downgraded before it has been jailbroken. Do not transfer an older firmware file unless a current, device-specific procedure explicitly authorizes it.
Why does KUAL open while an extension fails?
That pattern indicates that the jailbreak and launcher are functioning while the extension is incompatible or damaged. Reinstall only that extension and check its firmware and hard-float or soft-float requirements.
Is WinterBreak2’s update blocking universal?
No. Automatic blocking and removal of leftover update .bin files are instructions for WinterBreak2. A Kindle using another method may have different files and update behavior.
Does Amazon’s security-update period protect my jailbreak?
No. Amazon’s published policy concerns official security support, currently stated as at least four years from purchase new from Amazon as seller, subject to device-specific qualifications. It says nothing about compatibility with community jailbreak components.
Do I have to buy a special cable?

How to prevent the same problem after recovery
- Keep a note of the exact model, serial prefix, firmware version, jailbreak method, hotfix version, KUAL version, and extension versions that work together.
- Before accepting a future update, read the current jailbreak community guidance for that firmware rather than updating immediately.
- Back up documents and extension configuration files before making changes.
- After an update, test
;logbefore opening KUAL or troubleshooting extensions. - If the check responds, reinstall the hotfix before replacing every extension.
- Install extensions individually and test each one, especially when moving to firmware 5.16.3 or newer.
- Keep official firmware files and community packages separated on your computer so you do not transfer the wrong file to the Kindle.
- Use a reliable USB data cable and eject the Kindle cleanly after transfers.
When to stop and seek device-specific help
Stop experimenting when you cannot identify the model or firmware, when a guide does not explicitly support your combination, when the Kindle repeatedly rejects firmware files, or when it remains on an error screen after the documented recovery sequence. Provide the helper with the model, complete firmware version, original jailbreak method, reset history, exact on-screen message, and the steps already attempted. That information is more useful than saying only that the jailbreak “disappeared.”
The safest recovery is therefore conditional: use ;log to distinguish a surviving jailbreak from a lost one; repair the hotfix, KUAL, or extensions when status remains; and use a method-specific re-jailbreak or reset recovery only when the device and firmware match its documented requirements.
