How to Fix a Home Office Monitor That Won’t Wake From Sleep

If your monitor stays black after your computer wakes, first check whether the computer actually resumed. Then confirm the monitor has power and is set to the right input, reseat the video cable at both ends, and test without any dock or adapter if possible. These steps help identify whether the problem is the computer, monitor, cable, connection path, operating system, or a model-specific issue.

Start by finding out whether the computer woke

An external monitor generally needs a video signal from the computer to leave standby. If the computer is still asleep or hibernating, the monitor may remain dark or show “no signal” even when the monitor itself is working. Dell’s general wake guidance explains this relationship; the specific controls for waking a computer vary by model.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Move the mouse or press a key on the computer’s keyboard, then give it a moment to resume.
  2. Look for signs the computer is active, such as a changed power indicator, keyboard response, or sound. If you use a laptop, open its lid if it is closed.
  3. If the computer appears unresponsive, try waking or restarting it using its normal controls. Avoid repeatedly disconnecting power while it may be updating or shutting down.

If the computer is active but the external monitor remains blank, continue with the monitor and signal checks below.

Separate a sleeping computer from a failed display signal

A dark screen alone does not tell you which device has the problem. The computer may not have resumed, the monitor may be off or set to another input, or the video signal may be interrupted somewhere between the computer and display. Start with the computer because the monitor cannot show the desktop until it receives a signal.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check for signs of activity without changing several connections at once. If the computer responds to a key or mouse movement, proceed to the monitor. If it does not appear to respond, use its normal wake controls and allow it time to resume. On a laptop, opening the lid is another reasonable first check. If you restart, understand that it is a recovery step, not a diagnosis: a restart may restore the picture, but you will still need to determine whether the cable, accessory, display setting, or driver contributed to the failure.

Check the monitor’s power and selected input

A monitor can be powered on but listening to the wrong input. Check its power indicator and confirm that the input selected in the monitor’s on-screen controls matches the cable connection—for example, HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C.

  1. Make sure the monitor’s power cable is firmly connected at the monitor and power outlet. If the indicator is off, reseat the power cable and check the outlet or power strip.
  2. Use the monitor’s physical controls to open its input or source menu.
  3. Select the input that corresponds to the cable actually connected to the computer or dock.
  4. If the monitor still does not respond, disconnect its power, reconnect it, and check again. Microsoft’s Surface display guidance recommends checking monitor power and matching the selected input to the connected port. Microsoft’s Surface external-display troubleshooting describes those checks.

Use the indicator and any on-screen message to decide what to test next. If the indicator is off, address power before investigating Windows or macOS: a display without power cannot show whether it is receiving a video signal. If the monitor is on but reports “no signal,” it has power but is not displaying a usable signal from the selected input. Verify the input and follow the cable checks below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Input names can differ from the connector names you expect, so match the selected source to the port actually in use. For example, if the cable is connected to the monitor’s HDMI input, selecting DisplayPort will not test the HDMI connection. If the monitor has more than one input of the same type, use its controls to choose the specific connection in use.

Reseat the video cable and remove extra connection points

A loose or faulty connection can interrupt the signal even when both devices have power. Reseat the video cable at the computer or dock and at the monitor. If your setup includes a dock, hub, or dongle, connect the monitor directly to the computer for a test, when the ports allow it. Each extra connection is another possible point of failure.

  1. Check that the video cable is fully inserted at both ends. Disconnect and reconnect it firmly.
  2. If the monitor connects through a dock, hub, or dongle, temporarily bypass that accessory and connect directly to the computer.
  3. Try a different compatible video cable. Microsoft recommends testing another cable to help determine whether the original is faulty.
  4. If available, connect the monitor to another computer, or connect the computer to another display. These tests help separate a monitor problem from a computer, cable, or accessory problem.

Change one thing at a time and check whether the monitor wakes after each change. If a direct connection works but the docked setup does not, focus on the dock, hub, adapter, or its connections rather than replacing the monitor.

Read the results of each connection test

Testing one change at a time makes the result useful. If reseating the existing cable restores the picture, a loose connection was a likely part of the problem. If a different compatible cable works with the same computer, monitor, and input, the original cable becomes the leading suspect. Microsoft recommends the cable swap as a way to check for a faulty cable, rather than treating it as a guaranteed fix.

If the monitor works when connected directly to the computer but not through the dock, hub, or dongle, the accessory or one of its connections is implicated. That test does not by itself identify whether the accessory, an adapter, or a cable in the accessory path is at fault. Check those parts individually if possible. Conversely, if direct connection also fails, continue with the computer’s display settings and the compatibility checks rather than assuming that the dock is the cause.

Testing the monitor with another system or the computer with another display can further narrow the problem. If the monitor works with another computer, the original computer or its connection path needs attention. If the computer works with a different display, focus on the original monitor and its cable or input. These are isolation tests: their purpose is to identify which part of the setup to investigate next, not to prove a particular component is defective in every configuration.

A compatible HDMI or DisplayPort cable is a reasonable replacement to consider only after you have checked the existing cable and confirmed the connection type. If you need an adapter, choose one that matches the computer’s video-output capability and the display mode you intend to use. A new monitor or a generic PC optimization utility is not a standard first-line fix for a wake problem; check the signal path and settings first.

Check USB-C and adapter compatibility

A USB-C connector’s shape alone does not establish that it can send video. Confirm that the computer’s specific port supports video output, and that any cable or adapter supports the resolution and refresh rate you are using. Apple notes that USB-C adapters need to comply with the relevant DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt standard. Its guidance also recommends a direct connection when troubleshooting a display connected through a dock or hub: Apple’s external-display troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an adapter-based connection fails, test a compatible direct connection if possible. Otherwise, verify the computer’s port capabilities and the adapter’s supported display modes against the exact computer and adapter specifications. Do not assume that an adapter will carry every resolution or refresh rate just because its plugs fit.

When checking compatibility, compare the particular computer port, cable or adapter, and monitor mode rather than looking only at the connector shape. A port may have the right physical fit without supporting video output. Similarly, an adapter may work for one display mode but not the resolution or refresh rate you are asking it to carry. If you cannot connect directly, use the exact computer and adapter specifications to confirm those requirements before buying a replacement.

Windows: check projection mode and the graphics driver

Microsoft’s external-monitor guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Start with the display mode, then try the graphics reset shortcut and restart before changing drivers.

  1. Press Windows+P to open the projection options. Select the mode you intend to use, such as Extend for a separate desktop or Duplicate to show the same image on both screens.
  2. If the computer is active and the display had worked before the sleep cycle, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. Microsoft says this may reset the graphics driver in some cases. Check whether the monitor displays an image afterward.
  3. Restart the PC if the screen remains blank. A restart can restore a display connection that did not recover from sleep, but it will not identify which part of the signal path failed.
  4. If the problem began after a display-driver update, consider rolling back the driver. If rollback is unavailable or does not resolve the issue, Microsoft documents reinstalling the display driver through Device Manager. Follow the computer or graphics-adapter maker’s guidance for the specific device.

For additional Windows checks and driver steps, see Microsoft’s Windows external-monitor troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Windows checks in order

Start with Windows+P because the projection mode determines how Windows uses the external display. Choose Extend or Duplicate according to the setup you want. If you are using more than one screen, confirm you selected a mode that includes the external monitor rather than assuming that the black screen means the cable has failed.

The graphics reset shortcut is a next step when the PC is awake and a setup that previously worked stopped displaying after sleep. Microsoft says it may reset the graphics driver in some cases; it is not a universal remedy. Check the screen after using it. If that does not help, restart the PC and check again.

Driver changes make the most sense when the timing points to a driver problem—for example, if the fault began after a display-driver update. Consider rolling back in that situation. If rollback is not available or does not resolve the issue, Microsoft documents reinstalling the display driver through Device Manager. Follow the guidance for the particular computer or graphics adapter, since the correct driver and instructions depend on the device. Do not treat a driver reinstall as the first response to a monitor that has no power or is set to the wrong input.

Mac: reconnect the display and use Detect Displays

  1. Disconnect and reconnect the display cable and the display’s power source, then try waking the Mac.
  2. Open System Settings > Displays and use Detect Displays if that option is available.
  3. If the display is connected through a hub or dock, test a direct connection to the Mac where possible.
  4. Restart the Mac if it still does not detect the display.
  5. Check that the Mac supports the external display configuration you want and that the cable or adapter supports its resolution and refresh rate.

Apple’s instructions for a dark or low-resolution external display cover connection, detection, docks, and compatibility: If your external display is dark or low resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reconnect the display and its power before using Detect Displays, so you can check whether the Mac recognizes the connection after it has been re-established. If it is connected through a dock or hub, try connecting it directly to the Mac when possible. A successful direct test points attention toward the accessory path; it does not automatically establish which part of that path failed.

If the Mac still does not detect the display, restart it and check the supported external-display configuration for the exact Mac. Also confirm that the cable or adapter supports the resolution and refresh rate you want. A display can be connected physically yet still have a compatibility limitation, so check the relevant computer, cable, and adapter specifications rather than assuming all USB-C connections support all display modes.

The computer also appears asleep or unresponsive Wake the computer first. A monitor may stay in standby until it receives a video signal.
The monitor has no power indicator Check the monitor’s power connection and outlet before troubleshooting the video signal.
The monitor is on but says “no signal” Confirm the selected input, reseat the video cable, and test another cable or connection path.
The display works when connected directly but not through a dock or hub Investigate the accessory, its cable connections, and any adapter in the path.
The issue began after a Windows driver update Try the Windows display checks, then consider a driver rollback or reinstall.
The issue continues after basic checks Search the monitor maker’s support site using the exact model number and symptoms. Look for documented model-specific suspend or resume issues.

The table is a way to prioritize the next check, not a set of certain diagnoses. “No signal” directs attention to the input and video path; an unlit power indicator directs attention to power first. A direct connection that succeeds changes the likely focus to the dock, hub, dongle, or adapter path. A fault that started with a driver update makes Windows driver steps more relevant. Keep track of which test changes the result so you do not repeatedly troubleshoot parts that have already been ruled out.

When the problem may be specific to a monitor model

Some wake failures have a documented cause tied to one monitor model; that explanation should not be generalized to other displays. For example, Dell documents a suspend/resume wake issue on the U2422HE associated with DDCCI communication during power-on. If you own that exact model and the symptoms match, check Dell’s model-specific article: Dell U2422HE suspend/resume troubleshooting.

For other monitors, search the manufacturer’s support site with the full model number and terms such as “wake,” “sleep,” or “resume.” If the general connection and operating-system checks do not resolve the issue, contact support for the exact computer and monitor models. Include the connection type, whether a dock or adapter is involved, and which cable or direct-connection tests you have already tried.

What to have ready for support

Before contacting the computer or monitor maker, note the exact model numbers and whether you use Windows or macOS. Describe what happens after the computer resumes: for example, whether the monitor’s power indicator is on, whether it displays “no signal,” and which input is selected. Include the connection type and whether the signal passes through a dock, hub, or adapter.

Also report the checks that changed—or did not change—the result: reseating both ends, selecting the input, testing a different compatible cable, bypassing the dock, or trying the monitor with another system or the computer with another display. On Windows, note whether the problem began after a driver update and which display checks you tried. This information helps support distinguish a power, signal-path, software, or model-specific issue without guessing from the phrase “won’t wake.”

What not to assume

A monitor that stays black after sleep does not automatically need replacement. First determine whether the computer resumed, whether the display has power, and whether it is listening to the correct input. Then isolate the cable and any dock or adapter. If those checks do not resolve the issue, use the operating-system steps and look for documentation for the exact monitor model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, buying a new cable or adapter is not a universal fix. Try a known-good compatible cable when available, and confirm video-output and display-mode compatibility before choosing an adapter. The official troubleshooting steps focus on connections, display settings, and drivers; they do not establish a standard need for a new monitor, repair tool, or PC optimization utility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my monitor wake up when my computer does?

The monitor generally needs a video signal to leave standby. Confirm the computer resumed, then check monitor power and input, reseat both ends of the video cable, and test without a dock or hub if possible.

My monitor says “no signal” after sleep. What should I check first?

Check that the selected monitor input matches the connected cable, then reseat the cable at both ends. If you use a dock, hub, or adapter, test a direct connection where possible.

Can a USB-C cable or adapter fit but still fail to display video?

Yes. The computer’s particular USB-C port must support video output, and the cable or adapter must support the display’s resolution and refresh rate. Apple notes that USB-C adapters must comply with the relevant DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I try in Windows if the monitor stays black after sleep?

Press Windows+P and choose the intended mode, such as Extend or Duplicate. If the display previously worked, Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B may reset the graphics driver in some cases. Restart, and consider rollback or reinstall if the issue began after a driver update.

How do I make a Mac detect an external display again?

Reconnect the display cable and power, try waking the Mac, and use Detect Displays in System Settings > Displays if available. Test a direct connection instead of a dock or hub, restart if needed, and check display-mode compatibility.

Should I replace my monitor if it will not wake?

Not as a first step. Check computer wake, monitor power and input, the cable, and any dock or adapter; then try the relevant Windows or macOS steps. Contact support for the exact models if the problem persists.

The Bottom Line

First confirm the computer resumed; then check the monitor’s power and input, reseat the video cable, and test a direct connection without a dock or adapter. Use the Windows or Mac checks that apply, and consult the manufacturer for model-specific guidance if the display still will not wake.
