The reliable fix is model-specific: identify whether the decoration is an inflatable or a rigid prop, read its setup and weather instructions, then use only the supplied stakes, tethers, clips, loops, or base on level ground. Start by identifying the decoration

The manufacturer’s attachment points are part of the structural design. Begin with the model’s assembly sheet, not with a generic stake or weight that happens to be available.

Rigid and lightweight props
Foam tombstones, plastic figures, fabric scenes with frames, and homemade props may have very different balance points and anchoring provisions. Look for a supplied stake, mounting hole, loop, base plate, or other feature described by the maker. If none is provided, the available guidance does not establish a universal retrofit method for drilling, gluing, or adding ballast. A modification that holds one prop could crack another, pull a sharp edge into a walkway, or void the product’s safety instructions.

Secure a Halloween inflatable step by step
The following sequence combines the model-specific priority in Disguise’s inflatable assembly instructions with the general placement advice in Lowe’s guide to setting up holiday inflatables. The product manual controls whenever the two sources do not address the same detail.
- Find the exact instructions. Use the model number, packaging, sewn-in label, or the manufacturer’s support page. Confirm which loops or clips are intended for tethers and which pieces are only for packaging or decoration. If the instructions are missing, contact the maker or retailer rather than guessing where to attach a line.
- Choose level ground. Move the inflatable to a flat section of lawn or another surface expressly allowed by its instructions. A slope lets the base slide and changes the angle at which each tether pulls. Remove stones, branches, and other objects that could lift the fabric or prevent stakes from seating fully.
- Keep the blower intake clear. Before inflation, check that grass, leaves, and fabric are not blocking the intake. A restricted intake can leave the figure soft, allowing it to lean even when the anchors are correctly installed. Recheck the intake after mowing or when wind has blown debris across the base.
- Lay out the supplied tethers. Identify every intended tether point and route each line so it pulls outward from the figure instead of crossing a path. Do not substitute a decorative cord for a structural tether unless the instructions identify it as suitable.
- Install the supplied lawn stakes. Push or drive each stake into the ground exactly as the instructions show, leaving the designed connection point accessible. The ground must be firm enough to hold the stake; a stake in loose fill, saturated soil, or a shallow hole can pull out even when it appears tight.
- Attach clips and lines to their intended points. Connect each tether clip to the matching loop or ring. Use all of the supplied attachment points unless the manual says otherwise. A single taut line can twist the inflatable and put more load on one side.
- Use ballast only with permission. General retail guidance says small weights or sandbags may provide extra help, but that is not blanket authorization to add weight to every model. If the manual supplies sandbags or specifies where they go, use only those provisions. Do not put loose objects inside the fabric unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
- Inflate and inspect before leaving it unattended. With the blower running, walk around the decoration. It should stand upright, the tethers should pull evenly, and no line should touch a sharp edge or create a trip route. If one corner lifts, shut the blower off and correct the anchor or ground problem before continuing.
What the included hardware can—and cannot—tell you
Some products include ballast, but the contents of one package are not a universal specification. For example, the assembly page for an 8.5-foot Minecraft Enderman lists six lawn stakes, four sandbags, and six tether clips. The same page lists four stakes, two sandbags, and four tether clips for a 4-foot Minecraft Creeper. Those quantities describe those listed models only; they do not establish how many anchors another inflatable needs or how much wind it can withstand. Check the hardware supplied with your own model and follow its diagram.

Keep foreign objects out of the inflatable
The manufacturer’s listed-model instructions say, “Do not place any foreign objects inside your inflatable.” A sandbag shown in an external pocket or at a designated base position is different from putting a random brick, bottle, or other object inside the fabric. If the instructions do not identify a ballast location, leave the interior empty and seek a model-specific answer.

Anchoring is not a substitute for the product’s weather rule. For the listed inflatables, the manufacturer states: “During inclement weather conditions such as heavy rain, snow and windstorms, store the product indoors.” When that instruction applies, deflate the item and move it indoors rather than trying to compensate with extra stakes or improvised weights.

The available instructions do not provide a universal household-decoration wind-speed cutoff. Do not convert a forecast number into a made-up safe limit. Check the exact manual, watch the actual conditions at your property, and remove the decoration when the maker requires indoor storage or when the site can no longer hold the anchors securely.
Before removing an inflatable
- Clear people and pets from the area so lines and fabric do not snag them during deflation.
- Follow the model’s shutdown and storage sequence; do not drag an inflated figure by its fabric or tether.
- Dry the item as directed before packing it so moisture is not trapped in storage.
- Store stakes, clips, sandbags, and instructions with the decoration so the intended hardware is available next time.
Stabilizing non-inflatable yard props
Use the provided mounting feature
For a rigid prop, start with the base, stake hole, loop, or mounting point identified by its instructions. Place the prop on the firmest level surface the product allows, then use an anchor that matches both the attachment point and the ground. A narrow stake designed for soft lawn may not hold in loose mulch; a heavy anchor placed where people walk can create a trip hazard.

Foam tombstones and plastic figures
These items often have little mass and a broad face that catches gusts. That explains why they can fall even when they look stable in calm weather, but it does not establish one approved repair. If the maker supplied a slot or loop, use it. If no mounting method is documented, contact the maker or choose a protected display location rather than drilling through the prop or gluing on hardware without guidance.

Inspect joints, feet, and frame connections before adding an anchor. A loose joint can make the entire assembly fold, while a taut line attached to a weak panel can tear it. Keep any line within the footprint or along an edge where it cannot catch a passerby. Because construction varies widely, there is no source-backed universal instruction for choosing screws, adhesives, guy lines, or ballast for these projects.

Match the anchor to the site and the decoration
When instructions permit an anchor, evaluate four things together: the decoration’s intended attachment point, the surface, permission for ballast, and the safety of the placement. The following framework prevents a common mistake—choosing a strong-looking anchor that the decoration was never designed to carry.

There is no evidence here for a universally “best” stake, a standard stake length, or a minimum weight. Those choices depend on the product and ground conditions. Treat a larger stake or heavier bag as a design change, not an automatic upgrade.
Troubleshoot the specific failure
The inflatable leans as soon as it fills
- Confirm that the base is on level ground rather than a slope.
- Check that the blower intake is open and the fabric is fully inflated.
- Look for a missing tether, a clip attached to the wrong loop, or a line pulling from only one side.
- Re-seat each supplied stake in firm ground. If the soil cannot hold it, use the weather instruction and take the decoration down instead of improvising.
One corner lifts or the figure rotates
- Stop operation and inspect the lifted side for a loose clip or stake.
- Make sure lines are routed outward and are not crossed underneath the base.
- Verify that every intended tether point is used. Uneven tension can twist a tall inflatable.
Stakes keep pulling out
- Check for saturated, loose, or shallow soil and move to an approved firmer location if possible.
- Do not assume that adding random objects inside the inflatable will solve a ground-holding problem.
- If the ground remains unsuitable or wind is increasing, follow the manufacturer’s storage instruction.
The decoration was stable earlier but now falls
- Inspect for a shifted stake, a loosened tether, debris at the blower intake, or a change from dry to wet ground.
- Recheck the entire setup after mowing, watering, or moving the decoration.
- Use the model’s weather guidance; a calm-weather setup may not be intended to remain outside during a windstorm.
A rigid prop has no documented anchor point
Do not drill, glue, or add a heavy weight as a default repair. Move it to a sheltered, level location and ask the manufacturer for an approved method. The reviewed guidance supports supplied mounting features for non-inflatables but does not provide a universal retrofit procedure.

- Using a generic “wind-proof” recipe. No universal stake size, ballast amount, or wind limit is established for household Halloween decorations.
- Putting objects inside an inflatable. The listed manufacturer instructions specifically prohibit foreign objects inside the inflatable.
- Ignoring the weather instruction. Extra anchoring does not override an instruction to store the product indoors during windstorms.
- Anchoring to a decorative component. Attach only to the supplied loops, clips, holes, or base intended to carry load.
- Placing lines across access routes. A tether that prevents tipping but creates a trip hazard is not a safe fix.
- Borrowing requirements from amusement inflatables. A safety bulletin for large amusement devices is not a specification for a residential yard decoration.
Why ground conditions matter—and what the CPSC bulletin does not say
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2015 Amusement Ride Safety Bulletin—Inflatables discusses inflatable amusement devices. It notes that ground conditions affect stake holding power and cautions about sandbags or other ballast when instructions do not permit them or are unavailable. That is useful context for checking soil and following instructions, but the bulletin is not a household-Halloween-decoration standard. Do not copy its device-specific stake requirements, figures, or operating limits to a small yard inflatable.
A practical setup checklist
- Identify the exact decoration and locate its instructions.
- Confirm whether it is an inflatable or a rigid prop.
- Place it on level, approved ground and clear debris.
- For an inflatable, keep the blower intake unobstructed.
- Use every supplied stake, tether, clip, loop, or base feature shown in the setup diagram.
- Use sandbags or other weights only where the exact instructions permit them.
- Keep stakes and lines away from paths, gates, driveways, and emergency access.
- Inspect the display after setup and after changes in weather or ground conditions.
- When the manufacturer says to store the product indoors during inclement weather, take it down.
- If no approved anchor method exists, do not invent one; move the prop or obtain model-specific guidance.
The safest solution is therefore not the heaviest weight or the largest stake. It is the manufacturer-approved attachment system on suitable ground, followed by prompt indoor storage when the product’s weather instructions require it.
