Start with the button and the remote model. On the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, holding the YouTube button lets you choose which installed YouTube app it opens, while the star button has its own shortcut editor. A different branded key, or a remote that cannot control power or volume, needs a different diagnosis.
First identify the remote, button and failure
“The wrong app opens” can describe three different situations: a supported shortcut that is set to an unintended app, a dedicated key whose behavior is fixed on that remote, or a remote-control problem that only appears to be an app problem. The official remapping instructions below apply to the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. Google says that remote can control a Google TV Streamer (4K) or a Chromecast with Google TV; they are not universal instructions for every television sold with Google TV.

Before changing anything, write down the Google TV device or television model, the exact key, and the app that opens. If the key is labeled YouTube or shows a star, use the matching procedure below. Do not apply the YouTube procedure to a Netflix-style branded key, and do not assume that every remote has a star button.

This is the directly documented “wrong app” fix. The button is intended to launch installed YouTube applications, and the selector determines which one you prefer. Google’s examples include YouTube, YouTube TV, YouTube Kids and YouTube Music. The procedure changes the selection among those YouTube apps; it is not a way to turn the key into an arbitrary app launcher.

- Confirm that the remote is the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote and that the desired YouTube-family app is installed on the connected Google TV device.
- Press and hold the YouTube button. A list of the installed YouTube apps should appear on the television.
- Highlight the app you want the button to launch and select it.
- Release the button and press it once to test the new selection.
If the preferred app is missing from the list, install it on Google TV first and repeat the long press. The selector only has installed YouTube apps to offer, so an app that is unavailable in your region or not installed cannot be selected through this control.
If a short press still opens the old choice
- Repeat the long press until the on-screen app selector appears; a quick tap normally launches the current choice immediately.
- Check that you changed the selection on the same Google TV device the remote is controlling. A remote paired with another streamer will not change that other device’s setting.
- Restart Google TV after selecting the app, then test again. This is a diagnostic restart, not a separate remapping method.
- If no YouTube-app list appears, verify the key label and remote model. A similar-looking key on another remote may not expose Google’s selector.
Google’s documentation does not describe this key as a general app remapper. In particular, do not expect the YouTube hold-and-select screen to change a Netflix key, a manufacturer-specific key, or a random button to an unrelated application.
Set or change the star button shortcut
The star button on the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote is a separate customizable control. It can open a favorite TV app, open the Google Home panel, or show and cycle device inputs. If the star currently opens an app you do not want, replace its shortcut rather than changing the YouTube setting.

- Press the star button once.
- Choose the TV app you want to associate with the button.
- Select Create shortcut.
- Press the star button again to confirm that the selected app opens.
The app must be available on the Google TV device for it to appear as a choice. The star control is not limited to apps: Google also provides choices for the Google Home panel and device inputs. Selecting one of those options intentionally makes the button perform that other action instead of launching an app.

Edit an existing shortcut
Press and hold the star button for one to two seconds. The shortcut editor should open, allowing you to replace the current action. Use this hold gesture when the button already has a shortcut; a quick press is reserved for running it.
Configure an input shortcut through Settings
When the action you need is an input rather than an app, Google documents a settings route:
- Open All Settings on Google TV.
- Go to Remotes & Accessories.
- Select Set up remote buttons.
- Choose Customizable button.
- Select the desired device input or other available action and save it.
Menu wording can vary slightly by software version or language, but the important path is the Remotes & Accessories section and the Set up remote buttons entry. If Customizable button is absent, check that the connected remote is the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote rather than assuming the television has a hidden universal remapper.
What to do with another dedicated app key or remote model
The reviewed Google support pages document the YouTube selector and the star-button shortcut for the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. They do not establish a built-in, general-purpose remapper for every branded app key or every Google TV remote. A key that always opens one service may therefore be fixed by the remote’s firmware, by the television manufacturer, or by a limited setting that is not exposed on your model.

Check for a manufacturer setting first
- Open the television or streamer’s remote settings and search for terms such as customizable button, shortcut, app key or remote buttons.
- Use the exact model number when consulting the device maker’s manual. Two remotes that look alike can expose different buttons and menus.
- Confirm that the button is physically labeled for the action you are trying to change. A key with a service logo is often not treated like the star button.
- Update the Google TV device and its remote firmware if an update is offered, then check the same menu again. An update may improve reliability, but it does not guarantee that a previously fixed key becomes programmable.
Use a button-mapping app only when its requirements fit
Android TV and Google TV mapping apps advertise broader reassignment, but their store descriptions are developer claims rather than a guarantee for every television, remote or button. Button Mapper TV Quick Actions, listed as updated September 2, 2026, says it can map remote buttons to apps, system settings and navigation shortcuts. Its listing says it detects physical presses through Android Accessibility Service.
FOBB: TV Remote Button Mapper, listed as updated June 30, 2026, describes disabling unwanted shortcuts and an optional Pro feature for mapping buttons to custom apps. The same listing warns that some televisions turn off its accessibility service after a restart or standby. Treat that warning as a compatibility risk, not as proof that the app will fail on your set.
Typical setup and verification for a mapper
- Read the app’s current Google Play requirements and confirm that your device runs Android TV or Google TV and exposes an Accessibility setting for downloaded services.
- Install the mapper from Google Play, open it, and enable its requested Accessibility Service. The service is what allows the app to observe physical remote presses; granting it is a system-level permission.
- Use the app’s detection or add-button function and press the problem key once. If no event is detected, the mapper cannot reliably remap that key on your hardware.
- Assign the target app or action, save it, and test from the Google TV home screen as well as from inside another app.
- Restart the television and wake it from standby. If the mapping disappears, revisit Accessibility settings and the mapper’s startup or service-persistence options.
- Remove the mapping if it intercepts navigation, creates repeated launches, or prevents the original key from working. Revoke the Accessibility permission when uninstalling if Android leaves the service listed.
A mapper may not see keys handled at a lower firmware level, and some services cannot survive standby or a television restart. If the target button is not detected or the service repeatedly disables itself, the practical choices are the remote’s native behavior, a supported Google shortcut, or a different compatible remote—not repeated resets of the same mapper.

Separate app mapping from power, volume and input failures
A remote can navigate Google TV over its wireless connection while failing to control the television’s power or volume over infrared (IR). That symptom does not mean an app button is mapped incorrectly. Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically treats navigation that works while TV controls fail as a possible IR configuration or sensor problem.

- Open Settings on Google TV.
- Select Remotes and accessories (the exact capitalization can vary).
- Choose Set up remote buttons.
- Inspect the configured television or audio device for power and volume control.
- Run the on-screen setup again if the wrong device, brand or control method is selected, and point the remote toward the TV’s IR sensor during the test.
Keep the remote’s line of sight clear of cabinets, soundbars and decorations that can cover the sensor. Replace or recharge the remote batteries if presses are intermittent. These checks restore TV-control signals; they do not change which streaming app a dedicated app key launches. If only the app choice is wrong and volume, power and navigation work normally, return to the YouTube or star-button procedures instead of repeating IR setup.

The YouTube selector never appears
- Verify that you are holding the button, not tapping it. The selector is invoked by a press-and-hold gesture.
- Check that the remote is the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote and that it is paired with a Google TV Streamer (4K) or Chromecast with Google TV.
- Look at the key itself. If it is not labeled YouTube, the documented selector does not apply.
- Install at least two supported YouTube apps if you are testing whether the list is populated; a single installed choice may provide nothing useful to switch between.
- Restart the streamer, reconnect the remote if necessary, and test the hold gesture from the home screen.
The star shortcut opens the wrong action
- Hold the star for one to two seconds to edit it; do not use only a quick press.
- Choose the app again and select Create shortcut, or use the Customizable button entry under Remotes & Accessories.
- Check whether the current assignment is actually an input or Google Home panel action. Those are valid star-button choices and can look like an unexpected app launch if you are testing from a different screen.
- If the Customizable button menu is absent, confirm the remote model before troubleshooting software.
A mapper works until standby or reboot
Re-enable its Accessibility Service and check whether the television has a setting that disables accessibility services after standby. FOBB’s listing explicitly describes this behavior on some TVs, so a lost mapping may be a service-persistence limitation rather than a bad target app. If the service cannot remain enabled, use a native Google shortcut or a remote whose controls are supported without interception.
The wrong app opens only sometimes
- Test the physical key for sticking or double registration. A worn button can send more than one event, making a correct mapping appear random.
- Move the remote closer to the streamer and replace weak batteries to rule out missed or delayed presses.
- Disable one mapper at a time if more than one accessibility app is installed; competing services can intercept the same event.
- Check whether the app opens after a long press, a short press or a repeated press. Assign only one gesture in the mapper and leave the native shortcut enabled until the new behavior is confirmed.
Choose the least fragile solution

Use the built-in Google setting whenever it matches the key and action. It survives ordinary app changes without an additional accessibility service and gives you a clear recovery path. Use third-party mapping only when the native choices cannot express the action and you have confirmed that the button is detectable and the service remains enabled on your television.

- The star button can be assigned to a favorite TV app, the Google Home panel or a device input on the supported remote.
- A branded key on an unrelated remote may be firmware-controlled and therefore unavailable to Google’s built-in settings.
- Accessibility-based mappers can add broader actions, but they depend on permission, physical-button detection and service persistence.
- IR setup affects television power, volume and input commands, not the streaming app selected by a shortcut.
Once you identify the exact key and remote, the remedy is narrow: use the long-press selector for YouTube, edit the star shortcut, or investigate compatibility before installing a mapper. If the button is not one of those supported controls, the evidence does not justify promising a universal fix; verify the model’s capabilities and treat any third-party remapping as conditional.
