If a Google Maps Plus Code will not open or points somewhere unexpected, keep the + sign, check every character, and add the town or city when the code is a short local code. Then search it in Google Maps, compare the returned pin with a known location, and create a fresh code from a verified dropped pin if necessary. A nearby result is not always an error: Plus Codes identify areas, not necessarily a building’s exact doorway.
First, identify what kind of Plus Code you have
A Plus Code is an address-like location code that Google Maps can search without a conventional street address. The format determines how much context the code carries and whether Google can resolve it from your current location. Google’s support documentation explains that a full global code contains eight characters before the plus sign, while a short local code contains four characters before it. The + is part of the syntax, not decorative punctuation. See Google’s Plus Codes support documentation for the format rules.

A short code is intentionally relative. Google resolves its omitted leading characters from your location or from the locality you provide. Using a code copied in one city while you are searching in another can therefore produce a valid-looking result in the wrong place. Google gives the example H93V+7F, Kolkata; the city supplies the context that the shortened code lacks. A short code by itself is comparable to giving someone “100 Main Street” without naming the city. The explanation and examples are documented in Google Maps Help.

Use this repair sequence before trying anything more complicated
- Preserve the exact code. Re-enter or paste it with the
+character. Confirm that the eight-character or four-character prefix has not been shortened, reordered or replaced with a look-alike character. - Supply locality context for a short code. Search it in the form
SHORTCODE, Town/Citywhen the code came from another area. If possible, obtain the full global code instead. - Use Google’s documented search flow. On a computer, open Google Maps and type the code in the search box. On a phone, enter it in the Google Maps app or in Google Search; no additional app is required.
- Check the returned pin. Compare it with a street address, landmark, coordinates or another trusted description of the intended place.
- Regenerate the code if the source is uncertain. Search for the intended place, click or long-press the exact point to drop a pin, inspect the location details and copy the Plus Code shown for that point.
- Account for area precision. If the pin is close but not at the entrance, check how many characters follow the plus sign. A Plus Code can accurately identify its represented area without identifying a particular doorway.
Fix a code that does not open at all
Keep the plus sign and character sequence intact
The plus sign separates the code’s grid components and helps expose missing leading characters. Removing it, replacing it with a different symbol or entering only the characters after it can make a valid code impossible to recognize. Recopy the source rather than relying on memory, and compare the pasted text character by character with the original.

Also check for transcription errors. The Open Location Code system uses a restricted alphabet, so a character outside that alphabet is not a valid code character. The complete character and decoding rules are in the Open Location Code specification. If a scan, screenshot or handwritten note is unclear, do not guess which character was intended; regenerate the code from the location instead.
Distinguish a missing prefix from a malformed code
A four-character prefix before + is normally a short local code, not an incomplete full code. Treat it as local and append the city or town where it was created. A code with an unexpected number of characters, a missing + or an unfamiliar symbol should be treated as malformed until you verify it against the source location.
Search with locality when the code came from elsewhere
Enter the short code and locality together, separated by a comma, for example H93V+7F, Kolkata. Use the locality associated with the original location, not necessarily your current city. If the town name is shared by multiple places, include a larger regional context in the search text so Google can distinguish them.
The most reliable alternative is a full global code. Ask the sender to open the intended point, copy the complete code shown in the location details and resend it without editing. This removes the dependence on the searcher’s current location.

Search the code correctly on desktop and mobile
Desktop Google Maps
- Open Google Maps in a browser.
- Click the search box.
- Paste or type the complete code, including
+. - For a short code from another city, add a comma and the town or city.
- Submit the search and wait for the map pin and location details to load.
If the result is a broad area or a different region, do not assume the map is correcting the code. First check whether the code was short and whether the locality was omitted.
Google Maps on a phone
- Open Google Maps or Google Search.
- Enter the code exactly, including the plus sign.
- Add the town or city after a comma when using a short code outside its original area.
- Open the result and inspect the pin, place label and surrounding map.
Google’s help page confirms that no separate Plus Code application is required; the code can be entered through Google Maps or Google Search. If one entry point behaves differently from the other, compare the exact text being submitted before changing devices or accounts.
When the code opens but shows the wrong place
Short-code locality is the most common explanation
A short code omits its first four characters. Google fills those characters using your current area or the locality in the query. The same visible short code can therefore be meaningful in more than one place. Search the code with its original town or city, or replace it with the full global code generated at the intended point.

A valid pin can still be several metres from the doorway
Plus Codes represent areas. According to Google’s current support documentation, two characters after the plus sign identify an area under about 14 × 14 metres, while three characters identify an area under about 3 × 3 metres. Those are area sizes, not guarantees that the marker will sit on a particular door, gate or room.

If you need a delivery entrance, trailhead or gate rather than the center of a property, drop a pin directly on that point and copy the newly generated code. Do not “correct” a valid code by moving the marker based only on a visual assumption; verify the intended point first.
Regenerate a trustworthy Plus Code
Regeneration is the safest fix when a code was copied from an old message, read from a blurry image or supplied without locality context.
- Search for the intended street address, business, landmark or coordinates in Google Maps.
- Zoom until the exact entrance, road junction or meeting point is visible.
- On desktop, click the exact point. On a phone, long-press the point to drop a pin.
- Open the location details associated with the pin.
- Copy the Plus Code displayed there, preserving the full string and plus sign.
- Search the copied code in a new query and compare the result with the original pin.
- Share the full global code when recipients may be in another city or country. If you share a short code, include its town or city in the same message.
For important deliveries, emergency coordination or remote locations, send the code together with a plain-language description and, when available, coordinates. The additional description gives the recipient a way to detect a context error rather than blindly trusting a single marker.

Use a Plus Code without an internet connection
Google says the Maps app can decode a Plus Code offline and drop a pin. That does not mean every map feature is available offline. To see map detail or navigate without a connection, download the relevant region in Google Maps’ Offline Maps feature before going offline.
- Code decoding: the app can interpret the code and place a pin while offline.
- Map detail: the region must already be downloaded if you need roads, labels or other map context.
- Navigation: offline routing depends on having the required region available; a decoded pin alone does not provide downloaded road data.
Download the region while connected, then test the code before travel. If the code is short, include its locality in your notes because the app may not have the same nearby-location context when you are offline.

Developer checks for Plus Code input
Validate before geocoding
The Open Location Code specification notes that not every possible character combination represents valid coordinates. An application should therefore validate the code before sending it to a geocoder or route service. Preserve the original input for diagnostics, report a clear validation error and avoid silently deleting the plus sign or changing characters.

For short codes, store the locality supplied by the user or the location context used to resolve it. A short code without that context is ambiguous by design. Once resolved, log the resulting coordinates and the locality used so a wrong-place report can be reproduced.
Google Maps Platform services that accept Plus Codes
Google documents Plus Code support in Places, Place Autocomplete and Geocoding APIs. The Maps Platform documentation also shows a complete 10-character Plus Code being used as a route location in the Routes API. Do not assume that accepting a Plus Code in one API means every endpoint will interpret every shortened form identically. Validate the input, attach locality when required, inspect the returned coordinates and compare them with the expected place before creating a route, autocomplete result or stored address.
Diagnose the result instead of guessing
The search returns no result
- Check that the
+is present in the correct position. - Compare each character with the original source and remove accidental substitutions.
- Confirm that the text uses characters allowed by the Open Location Code alphabet.
- If it is a four-character prefix before
+, add the original town or city. - Ask for a newly copied code from a dropped pin if the source remains unclear.
The result is in the wrong city
- Count the characters before
+. Four indicates a short local code. - Search the code with the source locality, not your current locality.
- Request a full global code if the recipient will search from far away.
- Compare the returned pin with a known address or landmark before using it.
The result is close but operationally wrong
- Check whether the code’s precision is sufficient for the entrance or access road.
- Inspect the represented area rather than only the marker’s visual center.
- Drop a new pin on the exact practical arrival point and copy its code.
- Send the code with an entrance description when a driver or visitor must approach from a specific side.
How to share a Plus Code so it keeps working
- Prefer the full global code for people outside the original locality.
- Keep the plus sign and every character exactly as generated.
- For a short code, write the town or city immediately after it, such as
H93V+7F, Kolkata. - Verify the code by searching it from a separate device or account and checking the returned pin.
- Include a street address, landmark, entrance note or coordinates when the location has multiple access points.
- For offline trips, download the map region in advance and test the code before losing connectivity.
Google describes Plus Codes as “free for anyone to use, forever” in its support material. Their usefulness still depends on preserving the syntax, supplying locality for shortened codes and matching the code’s area precision to the task.
