GitHub’s current command-line and web workflows also provide bypass paths for genuine false positives, test-only values, and some secrets that are scheduled for remediation. Bypass is a policy exception, not a substitute for credential rotation and history cleanup.

Use this decision path first
- Read the push-block message and record the detected value, file, and commit or commits. Command-line output shows up to five findings at a time.
- Classify the value as a real credential, a false positive, or a test-only value.
- If it is real, rotate or revoke the credential promptly and remove it from every affected commit.
- Amend the latest commit, or use interactive rebase for an earlier commit.
- Push again. If the scan timed out, do not assume the push escaped scanning; GitHub may scan the commits after they are pushed.
- Use a bypass only when the value is genuinely safe to push or an approved exception is required by your workflow.
What the block means
Push protection compares the commits being uploaded with patterns for credentials and other sensitive values. The block identifies where a matching value occurs, but it does not tell you that the value is harmless. Treat an unfamiliar token, password, private key, or API credential as exposed until its owner confirms otherwise.
Review every finding shown in the command-line message. Only five are displayed at once, so a repository with more matches can require several cleanup cycles. Check both the path and the commit identifier: the same value may occur in more than one commit.

Choose the correct fix
| Finding | Where it appears | Correct route | Security consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real credential | Latest commit | Rotate or revoke it, remove it, then amend the latest commit | Credential remediation and history cleanup are both required |
| Real credential | Earlier commit | Rotate or revoke it, remove it from the introducing commit, and rewrite the affected history with interactive rebase | Any commit still containing the value can trigger the block |
| False positive | Any commit | Confirm that the value is not usable, then use the available bypass workflow or request reviewer approval | Bypass behavior depends on repository and organization policy |
| Test-only value | Any commit | Verify that it cannot authenticate to a real service, then use the test-only bypass reason if offered | Do not classify a production credential as test data merely to unblock a push |
| Real secret that will be fixed later | Any commit | Use the “I’ll fix it later” bypass only when policy permits, then remediate it immediately | GitHub says the security alert remains open and notifications are sent |
Inspect the finding before changing history
Start with the exact commit and path named in the block. Open the file at that commit and determine whether the value is active, expired, synthetic, or merely similar to a credential pattern. Check surrounding configuration and deployment files; a token copied into a sample file may still be valid if it was reused elsewhere.
If the message lists a bypass URL for a command-line push, do not open it under a different account. The bypass must be completed by the user who performed the push. If no bypass option appears, repository or organization policy may require removal or a reviewer-approved request.
If the value is a real credential
Rotate or revoke it first
Contact the credential owner or security team and invalidate the credential through the service that issued it. Rotation creates a replacement credential; revocation disables the exposed one. Follow the issuer’s emergency procedure and update legitimate applications to use the replacement before deleting old configuration.
Removing the string from Git history does not make an already exposed credential trustworthy. Anyone who obtained the earlier commit could have copied it, so history rewriting and credential remediation are separate actions.
Record the affected commits
Make a list of every commit named by the block and any additional commit where the same value appears. You need to remove the value from all commits that are part of the push, not just the newest snapshot. Keep the replacement credential out of the repository while you perform the cleanup.
Prepare a safe history rewrite
Before amending or rebasing, make sure you are working on the intended branch and understand whether anyone else has based work on it. Rewriting changes commit identities, including commits that follow the edited one. Tell collaborators and the credential owner what is being changed, and preserve any unrelated local work so it is not accidentally included in the amended commit.
Separate the security fix from ordinary feature edits. The replacement configuration should come from the deployment system or another protected mechanism, not from a new hard-coded value. After editing, inspect the staged diff and the commit that will be pushed. If the same credential was copied into documentation, generated output, lockfiles, or a deleted file in another commit, each occurrence must be corrected before retrying.

Fix a secret in the latest commit
Use this route when the blocked value was added in your most recent local commit and has not already been pushed successfully.
- Edit the affected file and replace the credential with a safe configuration mechanism, or remove the value entirely. Do not leave the old value in comments or example text if the scanner still detects it.
- Stage the correction:
git add -A - Replace the previous commit with the corrected contents:
git commit --amend --all - Review the amended commit and confirm that the secret is absent from the files and diff you intend to push.
- Retry the push with your normal command, such as
git push origin <branch-name>.
The amend operation changes the commit that introduced the value rather than adding a second commit that leaves the original content in history. If the scanner reports another location, repeat the inspection and amendment until every listed occurrence has been handled.
Fix a secret in an earlier commit with interactive rebase
Use interactive rebase when the finding is not in the latest commit. This rewrites the commits after the one being edited, so coordinate with anyone who has based work on the branch.
- Identify the commit immediately before the commit that introduced the value.
- Start an interactive rebase from that point:
git rebase -i <commit-before-introduction> - In the editor, change
picktoediton the commit containing the secret, then save and close the file. - When Git stops at that commit, remove the value from the file and stage the correction with
git add -A. - Amend the stopped commit:
git commit --amend --all - Resume the rewritten sequence:
git rebase --continue - If Git stops at another affected commit, remove the value there, amend that commit, and continue again.
- After the rebase completes, inspect the resulting history and retry the push.
Resolve conflicts carefully. A conflict-resolution choice that reintroduces the old value will cause another block. If you need to abandon the rewrite before it completes, use git rebase --abort and restart after saving the correct changes elsewhere.
Verify that no affected commit still contains the value
Check the complete set of commits that will be sent, not only the current working-tree file. Search the branch history and inspect the paths named by GitHub. Review generated files, lockfiles, documentation, and deleted files: a secret can remain in an older version even when the current checkout looks clean.
Once the affected commits have been amended or rebased, push again. If the branch already has a remote history and the rewrite produces a non-fast-forward rejection, follow your team’s history-rewrite policy before using any force-push option. Do not overwrite collaborators’ work without coordination.
What not to do during cleanup
- Do not add only a later deletion commit. The original commit still contains the value and remains part of the push history.
- Do not assume a harmless-looking token is safe. Confirm with the issuing service or credential owner before choosing a bypass.
- Do not keep retrying an identical push. Correct the commit, remove the value from an API request, or complete an allowed bypass.
- Do not publish the replacement credential in the same branch. Use the protected configuration path intended for runtime secrets.
- Do not force-push a rewritten shared branch casually. Coordinate first and follow the repository’s history-rewrite policy.
When a bypass is appropriate
GitHub documents three bypass reasons: the value is used only in tests and poses no threat, the detection is a false positive, or the secret is real but will be fixed later. Select a reason only when it accurately describes the finding. A bypass allows the push; it does not remove the value or invalidate a credential.

False positive or test-only value
Use the corresponding bypass reason when you have verified that the matched text cannot authenticate to a real service. In the documented web workflow, false-positive and test-only bypasses close the alert without notification. Repository settings can change the exact labels and behavior, so read the confirmation screen before approving.

Real secret marked “I’ll fix it later”
This option is for a temporary policy exception, not a cleanup plan. GitHub says the security alert remains open and notifications are sent when a real secret is pushed under this reason. Rotate or revoke the credential and remove it from history as soon as the exception is approved.
Complete a command-line bypass correctly
For some command-line blocks, GitHub prints a URL that opens the bypass workflow. Visit that URL as the account that attempted the push, select the accurate reason, and approve the exception. Then retry the push within three hours. If more than three hours pass, the authorization expires and you must repeat the bypass process.
If the URL is missing, expired, or unavailable to your account, do not guess at a replacement address. Check the repository’s push-protection settings or use the reviewer-request process required by the organization.
Request reviewer approval when direct bypass is unavailable
Repository or organization policy can remove the direct bypass option. In that case, submit the finding through the designated reviewer workflow with a precise explanation of why the value is safe or why the exception is necessary.
GitHub documents a seven-day expiry for bypass requests. If the request is approved, push the relevant commit before the approval expires. If it is denied or expires, remove the value from every affected commit and retry. An approval does not rotate a credential or erase it from history.
Important edge cases
The push includes unintended refs
A block can appear unrelated to the branch you intended to publish when Git is configured to push multiple references. Inspect the refs in the push output and check the push.default configuration. Remove unintended refspecs or push only the intended branch, then reassess the findings.

The scan timed out
A timeout is not proof that scanning was skipped. GitHub says it can scan commits after they are pushed. Treat the timeout as unresolved, monitor the repository for a later alert, and be prepared to remediate the same way if a secret is detected.
A REST API request returns HTTP 409
GitHub’s content API documentation uses HTTP 409 when supported secrets are detected. The documented choices are to remove the secret from the request or create a permitted push-protection bypass. Handle the response as a security block rather than retrying the identical payload.
User push protection and repository push protection differ
GitHub’s command-line guidance describes user push protection for public repositories as on by default. Its user-level bypass does not require a reason and does not create an alert. Repository-enabled secret scanning can have different bypass and alert behavior, so do not assume that a result from one scope applies to the other.
Delegated bypass eligibility
Delegated bypass gives an organization a review path and bypass list. GitHub currently documents this feature for organization-owned repositories on GitHub Team with GitHub Secret Protection enabled. Verify the repository’s current plan and settings before promising that delegated review is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a block that keeps returning
- The same commit is still named: confirm that you amended or edited the commit containing the value, rather than creating a new cleanup commit after it.
- Another file is reported: inspect all findings; command-line output is limited to five at a time.
- The value appears after rebase: check conflict resolutions and every later commit that copied the original configuration.
- No bypass control is shown: repository or organization policy may require removal or reviewer approval.
- The push targets the wrong branch: inspect refspecs and
push.defaultbefore changing history again. - The API still returns 409: remove the value from the submitted content or use an allowed bypass; repeated identical requests will not resolve the detection.
- The credential was already used: prioritize rotation or revocation even if the push never completed.
Prevent the next blocked push
Keep credentials outside tracked source files and use the deployment system’s protected configuration mechanism. Use clearly nonfunctional test fixtures for examples, and review generated artifacts before committing them. When a credential must be replaced, update the consuming service first, verify the replacement, and then revoke the old value.
For teams, document who owns each credential, who can approve bypasses, and how emergency rotation is handled. Make the distinction between “safe to push” and “temporarily allowed to push” explicit: the first can close a false-positive or test-only alert, while the second leaves a real-secret alert open.

What a successful resolution looks like
The corrected branch contains no detected secret in any commit being pushed, the exposed credential has been rotated or revoked when applicable, and the push completes without an unresolved alert. If you used a bypass, its reason, reviewer status, and expiration window are understood by the team, and any real-secret remediation remains tracked until finished.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is GitHub blocking my push if I already deleted the secret?
Deleting the value in a later commit does not remove it from the earlier commit that introduced it. Amend the latest commit or use interactive rebase to edit every affected commit still included in the push.
Should I rotate a token if the push was blocked?
Yes, if it is a real credential. Treat it as exposed, rotate or revoke it through the issuing service, and then remove it from Git history. A blocked push does not prove that nobody saw or copied the value.

How do I remove a secret from an older Git commit?
Start an interactive rebase from the commit immediately before the introduction, mark the introducing commit as edit, remove the value, run git commit –amend –all, and continue the rebase. Repeat for any later commit that contains the same value.
When can I bypass GitHub push protection?
Only after confirming that the match is a false positive, a nonfunctional test-only value, or a real secret covered by an approved temporary exception. Choose the accurate reason and remember that bypass does not rotate the credential or clean history.
How long do I have to retry after a command-line bypass?
GitHub documents a three-hour window after approving a command-line bypass. If it expires, repeat the bypass workflow before pushing.
What if my bypass request is not approved?
A documented bypass request expires after seven days. If it is denied or expires, remove the secret from every affected commit and retry the push. Check current repository and organization policy because labels and eligibility can change.
