First identify the exact GIGABYTE motherboard model and hardware revision. The BIOS file, USB port, filename, power connections and recovery behavior are model-specific; using a file for a similar board can leave the system unusable.
Next classify the symptom: an update that failed but still reaches POST, a machine that opens BIOS setup but not the operating system, or a system with no usable display or boot. Use ordinary Q-Flash when the firmware interface is available, Q-Flash Plus only when your exact board supports it, and DualBIOS recovery only on models that include that feature. Do not remove power merely because an update seems slow while progress indicators are active.

1. Identify the board before touching the BIOS
Write down the complete motherboard model and revision before downloading anything. GIGABYTE’s instructions require the file that matches the product model, and different revisions can have different firmware packages or recovery procedures.
Where to find the model and revision
- Look for the model name printed directly on the motherboard, usually near the expansion slots, memory sockets or chipset heatsink.
- Look for a revision marking such as “rev. 1.0” or a similar notation printed on the circuit board.
- If the computer still starts, read the model in BIOS setup or in the purchase and support records. Treat the board marking as the final check before flashing.
Record the symptom at the same time. Note whether the update stopped with an error, whether the machine still reaches the GIGABYTE logo or POST screen, whether BIOS setup opens, and whether any Q-Flash or Q-Flash Plus LED is still flashing. These details determine which procedure is safe to attempt.

Do not identify a board only by its chipset, socket or a shortened product name. Several GIGABYTE products can share a platform while requiring different firmware. A label such as “Z790,” “B360” or “X570” is not enough to select a file. The full product name and revision are the controlling information.
2. Choose the recovery path from the symptom
| Condition | Appropriate first route | What must be true |
|---|---|---|
| POST or BIOS setup still works | Embedded Q-Flash | The board manual provides the Q-Flash steps and the BIOS file matches the exact model and revision. |
| No operating system, but BIOS setup opens | Q-Flash, then check boot settings | The firmware update itself must complete successfully before troubleshooting the operating-system drive. |
| No usable boot or display | Q-Flash Plus, if supported | The precise board must list Q-Flash Plus and its manual must specify the required USB port, file name, power leads and media format. |
| Main BIOS may be corrupted | DualBIOS recovery, if fitted | The board must include the DualBIOS design described in its own documentation. |
| Supported recovery fails | GIGABYTE support or a qualified motherboard repair provider | There is no universal recovery procedure or guaranteed result for every model. |
These routes are not interchangeable. A Q-Flash Plus sequence from one family cannot be assumed to work on another, and DualBIOS is not present on every GIGABYTE motherboard.
Make the decision in order
- First ask whether a progress LED is still flashing. If it is, follow the timing and completion indication in the manual instead of interrupting the process.
- Next ask whether you can enter BIOS setup. If you can, ordinary Q-Flash is the documented starting point.
- If there is no usable display or boot, check the exact manual for Q-Flash Plus support and its dedicated port and button.
- Finally, look for DualBIOS documentation. Do not infer that a board has a backup chip because another GIGABYTE model does.
3. If the computer still reaches BIOS: use Q-Flash
Q-Flash is an update utility embedded in the motherboard firmware. The GIGABYTE B360 features manual describes using it without first entering an operating system. This is preferable to a Windows-based flash when the BIOS interface remains usable.
Prepare the correct file
- Open the support page for the exact motherboard model and revision recorded in the first step.
- Read the model’s BIOS notes and download the release intended for that board. Do not substitute a file for a board with a similar name, chipset or socket.
- Extract the downloaded archive exactly as instructed by GIGABYTE. Keep the BIOS file accessible on the USB drive in the location required by the manual.
- Use the file-selection screen in Q-Flash to verify the displayed model and file name before confirming.
Keep the downloaded archive until the update is complete so you can re-extract it if the first copy is damaged or incomplete. If the support page lists more than one revision, match the revision printed on the board rather than choosing the newest-looking package. A newer version for the wrong revision is still the wrong file.
Run the update
- Enter BIOS setup using the key shown during startup, then open the board’s Q-Flash utility. The label and menu location can vary by firmware generation.
- Select the matching BIOS file on the prepared USB drive.
- Read the warning and confirm only after checking the model, revision and file again.
- Leave the system connected to stable power while the utility erases, writes and verifies the firmware. Do not press the reset button, remove the USB drive or shut down the computer while the process is active.
- Allow the board to restart as instructed. A first restart can take longer than a normal boot because firmware settings may be reinitialized.
After the restart, give the board time to complete its own initialization. A blank screen during a normal restart is not automatically proof that the flash failed. Use the board’s documented indicators and on-screen messages, and avoid repeatedly pressing the power or reset controls while the firmware is working.
GIGABYTE’s B360 manual warns: “Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, please do it with caution. Inadequate BIOS flashing may result in system malfunction.” That warning applies to the decision to flash as well as to the file selection.
If Q-Flash reports an error
- Stop and reread the model and revision printed on the board.
- Re-download the BIOS package from the exact model’s support page and extract it again.
- Try a different USB drive if the utility cannot read the file, while following the media requirements in the board manual.
- Do not force the utility to accept a file for another model or revision.
If the machine still reaches BIOS after a failed attempt, do not jump immediately to Q-Flash Plus. First determine whether the original firmware is still running, then repeat the documented Q-Flash procedure with a verified file.
4. If there is no usable boot: check for Q-Flash Plus
Q-Flash Plus is a separate recovery feature available only on supported boards. It is designed to update firmware with little or no normal boot hardware installed, but its exact sequence differs by model.
Confirm support before preparing media
Search the manual and the support page for the precise model and revision for the words “Q-Flash Plus.” A board that has ordinary Q-Flash does not automatically have Q-Flash Plus. Locate the labeled Q-Flash Plus USB port and button in the manual rather than guessing from the rear-panel layout.
Read the whole procedure before connecting power. The requirements can include a particular filesystem, a renamed file, specific power connectors and a defined LED behavior. Missing one of those details can make a healthy recovery attempt appear to do nothing.
Example: the Z790 UD procedure
GIGABYTE’s Z790 UD support instructions describe connecting the 24-pin motherboard power lead and the 8-pin CPU power lead, placing the matching motherboard BIOS file on a USB drive, renaming that file gigabyte.bin, inserting the drive into the designated Q-Flash Plus port and pressing the Q-Flash Plus button. The instructions say the update can be performed without installing the CPU, memory or graphics card.

Those details are an example, not a universal recipe. Your board may require a different filename, port, filesystem, hardware configuration or wait period. Follow the manual for your exact revision.
Prepare the recovery drive
- Use a USB flash drive intended for BIOS recovery. No particular capacity, speed or manufacturer is established as universally necessary.
- Format it with the filesystem specified by the motherboard manual. Do not assume that FAT32 is required for every model.
- Copy only the matching BIOS file, and rename it only when the manual says to do so. The Z790 UD example uses
gigabyte.bin; another board can use a different name. - Eject the drive cleanly from another computer and insert it into the specifically labeled Q-Flash Plus port.
A USB flash drive for BIOS recovery is the only physical item normally needed for this preparation step beyond the board’s existing power connections. No particular brand, capacity or transfer speed has been established as mandatory, so the manual’s filesystem and port instructions matter more than shopping for a special model.
Connect power and start the flash
- Turn the computer off and connect the power leads required by the manual. The Z790 UD instructions call for the 24-pin and 8-pin connections.
- Leave other components installed or removed exactly as the board instructions require. Do not infer that a CPU or memory can be omitted on a board whose manual does not say so.
- Insert the prepared drive into the designated port.
- Press the Q-Flash Plus button once and watch the labeled indicator. Do not use a neighboring USB port or a generic case button.
- Wait for the board-specific completion indication before removing power or the drive.
If there is no LED activity, stop and check the three most common model-dependent points: the file name, the dedicated port and the required power leads. Do not respond by trying a different model’s file or by moving the drive through random ports. The absence of activity does not establish that the board needs a different firmware version; it may simply indicate that one documented prerequisite is missing.
Why timing cannot be generalized
GIGABYTE manuals give different LED intervals. The TRX50 manual says to wait 6–8 minutes until the LEDs stop flashing. A cited desktop manual also specifies a 6–8 minute wait and calls for FAT32/16 media and a USB 2.0 drive. The X570 AORUS MASTER manual instead describes a 2–3 minute LED interval with FAT32/16 media. These are instructions for those manuals, not a universal countdown.

|---|---|---|
| GIGABYTE TRX50 manual | FAT32, FAT16 or FAT12 USB filesystem | 6–8 minutes, until LEDs stop flashing |
| Cited desktop manual | FAT32 or FAT16; USB 2.0 drive | 6–8 minutes |
| GIGABYTE X570 AORUS MASTER manual | FAT32 or FAT16 | 2–3 minutes |
| GIGABYTE Z790 UD support instructions | Matching BIOS file, renamed gigabyte.bin, in the designated port |
Follow the board’s manual |
While the Q-Flash Plus indicator is actively flashing, do not cut power simply because the elapsed time differs from another model’s instructions. If the indicator stops according to your manual but the board still does not start, turn it off only as the manual directs and then test a normal boot.
5. Check DualBIOS only when your board has it
Some GIGABYTE boards use DualBIOS: separate main and backup BIOS chips. The GIGABYTE B360 features manual says that when the main BIOS is corrupted or damaged, the backup BIOS can take over on the next system boot.
The same B360 documentation says that, on the described design, Q-Flash Plus can automatically launch and recover BIOS data from a USB drive when both BIOSes fail. That behavior belongs to the models covered by that manual. It is not a promise that every GIGABYTE board will switch chips or launch an automatic recovery.
How to verify the feature
- Look up “DualBIOS” in the exact board manual or specifications.
- Check whether the board has the documented backup-BIOS indicators or recovery instructions.
- Allow the board’s documented recovery cycle to complete before attempting another flash.
If the manual does not mention DualBIOS, do not wait for a backup chip to recover the system and do not bridge, short or reprogram chips based on instructions for another model.

A successful firmware update does not repair a damaged operating-system installation, a disconnected boot drive or a changed boot mode. If BIOS setup opens after the flash, verify that the expected storage device is detected and that the intended boot entry remains selected. Use the board’s manual for the exact menu names.
- If the storage device is missing in BIOS, power off and check its cable or slot according to the hardware manual.
- If the drive is detected but the operating system does not start, check the boot order and any firmware settings that the update may have reset.
- If the system cannot reach BIOS setup at all, return to the Q-Flash Plus and DualBIOS decision points rather than changing operating-system files.
This distinction prevents a common mistake: treating every “won’t boot” report as a bad BIOS. A machine that reaches setup has already passed the firmware’s basic display and input stage. In that situation, first confirm firmware completion and storage detection before attempting another recovery flash.
7. What not to do during a failed update
- Do not flash a BIOS intended for a different model, revision or product family.
- Do not assume a filename such as
gigabyte.binworks on every board. - Do not use a random USB port when the manual identifies a dedicated Q-Flash Plus port.
- Do not remove power while an update indicator is still active unless the board’s instructions explicitly direct that action.
- Do not treat a process duration from the TRX50, a desktop manual or an X570 AORUS MASTER as a universal timeout.
- Do not install a Windows optimization or repair utility as a substitute for motherboard firmware recovery. The failure occurs below the operating-system layer.
- Do not assume that installing a CPU, memory or graphics card is harmless during Q-Flash Plus; follow the exact hardware configuration stated by the manual.
- Do not repeatedly restart the board while it is showing the documented recovery activity.
8. When to stop and seek qualified help
Escalate when the exact-model Q-Flash procedure fails repeatedly, Q-Flash Plus is unsupported or does not complete, the board has no documented recovery feature, or the machine remains without POST after the documented process. Contact GIGABYTE support with the model, revision, BIOS version attempted and observed LED or screen behavior. A qualified motherboard repair provider is another appropriate option after onboard recovery has been exhausted.

There is no standard repair price established for this situation. A USB drive is a modest preparation expense, while support or board-level service costs depend on location, warranty status and the provider’s diagnosis. Ask for a quote before authorizing chip-level work. The official material does not establish a universal manual-reflash method, a guaranteed recovery outcome or a success-rate percentage. BIOS-chip programmers, replacement chips and motherboard replacement should therefore not be treated as default fixes without model-specific diagnosis.

9. A concise recovery checklist
- Record the exact motherboard model and revision.
- Describe the symptom: failed update with POST, BIOS-only boot, or no usable boot/display.
- Check whether any progress or recovery LED is still active; do not interrupt an active flash merely because it is slow.
- If BIOS setup opens, use the embedded Q-Flash utility and the matching file.
- If there is no usable boot, verify Q-Flash Plus support and follow the exact port, power, filename, filesystem and timing instructions.
- Check the manual for DualBIOS before expecting automatic backup recovery.
- After a successful flash, distinguish firmware completion from an operating-system or boot-drive problem.
- If documented recovery fails, stop experimenting with other models’ files and contact GIGABYTE or a qualified repair provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any GIGABYTE BIOS file with the same chipset?
No. Use the file for the exact motherboard model and revision. A shared chipset or socket does not make firmware interchangeable.
Is Q-Flash Plus available on every GIGABYTE motherboard?
No. Confirm Q-Flash Plus support in the manual and support page for the precise model and revision. Ordinary Q-Flash does not imply Q-Flash Plus.
Can I rename every file to gigabyte.bin?
No. The Z790 UD instructions use gigabyte.bin, but another board may require a different name or no rename at all. Follow that board’s manual.
How long should Q-Flash Plus take?
There is no universal duration. Examples specify 6–8 minutes on a TRX50 manual and a cited desktop manual, while an X570 AORUS MASTER manual specifies 2–3 minutes. Use your board’s LED completion indication.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the computer reaches BIOS but not Windows after the update?
Treat it as a possible boot-drive or firmware-settings issue. Confirm that the storage device is detected and the intended boot entry is selected before attempting another BIOS recovery.
Will DualBIOS recover any GIGABYTE board automatically?
No. DualBIOS is model-dependent. The B360 documentation describes backup-BIOS takeover and a specific automatic recovery behavior, but that cannot be promised on boards whose manuals do not document it.
What USB drive should I buy for recovery?
Use a USB flash drive that meets your board manual’s filesystem and port requirements. No universal brand, capacity or speed has been established; some manuals specify USB 2.0, while others state only filesystem requirements.
Should I unplug the PC if the flash seems stuck?
Do not interrupt an actively flashing indicator merely because the process is taking longer than another model’s example. Wait for the exact manual’s completion indication, because safe interruption behavior is not universal.
What should I do if onboard recovery fails?
Stop trying files or procedures from other models. Contact GIGABYTE support or a qualified motherboard repair provider and provide the model, revision, attempted BIOS version and observed symptoms.
The Bottom Line
Match every file and recovery instruction to the exact GIGABYTE motherboard model and revision. Use Q-Flash when BIOS setup works, Q-Flash Plus only when the board documents it, and DualBIOS only when the feature is confirmed. Respect the board’s USB, filename, power and timing requirements, never interrupt an active flash without model-specific direction, and escalate to GIGABYTE or qualified repair when documented recovery fails.
