How to Fix a Gaming Soundbar With No Sound, Crackling, or Mic Problems

A silent or crackling gaming soundbar is usually suffering from a wrong input, an incomplete TV-to-soundbar audio path, a damaged or poorly seated cable, incompatible audio-format settings, wireless interference, or a microphone mode that the soundbar does not support. Start with power, mute, volume, and input selection; then trace the exact cable path, test a simpler format such as PCM when the manufacturer recommends it, and isolate the soundbar with another source. Microphone behavior is model-specific, so verify the supported connection mode before changing drivers or buying hardware.

Use this quick diagnosis first

Symptom Most likely areas First action
No sound at all Mute, wrong input, TV output set to internal speakers, incorrect HDMI port, disabled ARC/CEC, or a cable-path problem Turn up both source and soundbar, select the input matching the physical connection, and confirm that the TV is sending audio to the external soundbar
Sound cuts in and out or crackles Loose or damaged cable, Bluetooth interference, extreme source/bar volume levels, or a temporary handshake fault Reseat both cable ends, inspect the cable, try another suitable cable, move a Bluetooth source closer, and power-cycle the equipment
Game audio works but the microphone does not The selected connection mode may not expose the built-in mic, or overlapping noise suppression may be filtering the voice Check the model’s microphone-supported modes, unmute it, and temporarily disable duplicate communication-app or driver enhancements
The soundbar works with one device but not another The original source, TV setting, cable path, or format is the failing part Keep the known-good source and change only one component at a time to identify the fault

1. Check the controls before changing settings

Confirm power, mute, and two volume controls

Verify that the soundbar and the TV, console, or PC are powered on. Check the soundbar’s display or status light for a mute indicator. Raise the soundbar volume and the source volume separately; either one being muted or set extremely low can appear to be a dead audio system. If the TV has a separate volume control for external audio, check that as well.

Select the input that matches the physical connection

Use the soundbar remote or control panel to choose the input actually in use: HDMI ARC/eARC, a numbered HDMI input, optical, USB, Bluetooth, or AUX, if that model supports it. Optical and AUX connections commonly require manual input selection. Input names and menu labels differ by manufacturer, so use the label shown by your particular soundbar rather than assuming that “HDMI” means every HDMI socket.

Check the source’s output device

On a PC, select the soundbar, TV, or the relevant HDMI audio device as the operating system’s output. On a console, select HDMI or the TV/audio device that matches your wiring. A TV can continue using its own speakers even when a soundbar is connected unless its audio-output setting is changed to an external audio system.

  • What You Get: HDMI Cable (6 ft, 8K), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

2. Trace the console or PC audio path

Draw the signal path before changing more settings. There are three common layouts:

  • Source to TV, TV to soundbar: the TV receives game video and must return audio to the bar.
  • Source directly to soundbar, soundbar to TV: the bar receives audio on an HDMI input and may pass video onward.
  • Source directly to soundbar by optical, USB, Bluetooth, or AUX: the soundbar receives audio without relying on the TV’s audio-return function.

These layouts are not interchangeable. An HDMI socket can carry video while lacking the ability to return TV audio, and a bar’s HDMI input may not be the same as its ARC/eARC output.

When the TV returns audio over HDMI ARC or eARC

  1. Plug the cable into the TV socket explicitly labeled ARC or eARC.
  2. Connect the other end to the soundbar socket labeled ARC/eARC, HDMI OUT (ARC), or the model’s equivalent. Do not use an ordinary TV HDMI input for the return connection.
  3. Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC in the TV and soundbar menus when those options are available. Manufacturers use different names for CEC, so the setting may appear under device control, HDMI control, or a similar heading.
  4. Set the TV’s sound output to external speakers, audio system, or soundbar rather than TV speakers.
  5. Select the soundbar’s ARC/eARC input and test a built-in TV app or broadcast before testing the console. This separates a TV-return problem from a console problem.

Roku’s support guidance notes that ARC-related settings may be disabled and that a standard HDMI port can send video without sending audio back to a soundbar. If the TV has no ARC/eARC socket, use an optical connection supported by both devices or another layout permitted by the soundbar manual.

When the source connects directly to the soundbar

Connect the console or PC to the soundbar’s intended HDMI input, then connect the soundbar’s video output to the TV. Select the numbered HDMI input that contains the source. Some bars route video to the TV while decoding audio locally; others have limited pass-through capabilities. Check the model-specific signal-routing instructions, especially for high-refresh gaming, HDR, or surround formats. Do not assume that every HDMI port performs both input and ARC output duties.

Optical, USB, Bluetooth, and AUX paths

Connection What to verify Typical limitation
Optical Both ends are fully inserted, the TV’s optical output is enabled, and the bar is set to Optical Supported formats and channel handling vary by model; an optical cable does not provide HDMI-CEC control
USB The soundbar supports USB audio, the correct USB port is used, and the computer has selected it as output A USB socket intended for service, storage, or charging may not accept audio
Bluetooth The bar is in pairing or Bluetooth mode, the correct device is connected, and the source has selected the bar for playback Distance and nearby wireless devices can cause dropouts; TV/console Bluetooth support is not universal
AUX The analog cable is in the soundbar’s audio input, the source is outputting analog audio, and AUX is selected AUX carries stereo analog audio and may not support the bar’s other features

3. Try an audio format the specific path supports

If the wiring and output selection are correct but the bar remains silent or sounds distorted, inspect the source and TV audio-format setting. TCL’s troubleshooting for its ARC and optical scenarios advises trying PCM and notes that optical capabilities vary by model. Treat that as a model-specific diagnostic, not a universal instruction to disable surround sound. If PCM restores audio, consult the TV and soundbar manuals for the formats that the complete path supports before selecting a higher-bandwidth or multichannel mode again.

Change one setting at a time and test the same game or TV program after each change. A format that works through the TV’s built-in app may still fail when a console is connected directly, because the two paths can have different capabilities.

4. Fix crackling, hissing, and intermittent audio

Inspect and reseat every cable

  1. Turn down the volume before disconnecting anything.
  2. Remove and firmly reconnect HDMI, optical, or AUX plugs at both the source and soundbar/TV ends.
  3. Look for bent HDMI shells, damaged optical tips, frayed insulation, crushed sections, or connectors that fit loosely.
  4. Try another appropriate cable if one is available. A replacement HDMI cable is useful as a diagnostic when the existing cable is visibly damaged or ARC repeatedly fails to establish, but changing the cable cannot correct an incorrect port, disabled ARC, or an incompatible format.

Change only the cable first, then retest. If the symptom remains identical, return the original cable and investigate settings or another component instead of repeatedly replacing cables.

Reduce Bluetooth interference

For a Bluetooth connection, move the source closer to the soundbar with a clear path, keep it away from dense clusters of wireless equipment, and reconnect (pair) the devices. If a wired connection plays cleanly while Bluetooth crackles, the wireless link or its environment is more likely than the soundbar amplifier itself. Bluetooth behavior can also vary with the source device, so test a second phone or computer when available.

Balance source and soundbar levels

Do not leave one device at its minimum and the other at an extreme maximum. Set the source to a moderate level, then adjust listening volume on the soundbar. Excessive gain at either end can expose hiss or distortion, while an extremely low source level can make normal background noise more noticeable.

Power-cycle instead of factory-resetting

  1. Turn off the soundbar and the connected TV or source.
  2. Unplug both from power for 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect them, power on the TV/source first if the manual specifies an order, then power on the soundbar.
  4. Select the correct input and test again.

TCL recommends this 30-second power cycle for temporary connection glitches. Follow your model’s manual if it specifies a different sequence. A power cycle clears a transient handshake; it is not the same as erasing settings with a factory reset, so do not factory-reset the bar merely because audio dropped out once.

5. Diagnose a gaming soundbar microphone

Confirm that the connection mode exposes the microphone

Built-in microphone support is not a universal soundbar feature and can change by input mode. ASUS Republic of Gamers states in its ROG Gjallar support FAQ: “The built-in microphones are available only when the soundbar is operating in USB or Bluetooth mode and are not supported in HDMI, Optical (SPDIF), or AUX mode.” That statement applies to the ROG Gjallar; it is not a rule for every gaming soundbar. If your model uses a different design, consult its manual for supported modes before troubleshooting the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check mute and operating-system selection

  • Use the soundbar’s physical or on-screen microphone-mute control and confirm that no mute indicator is active.
  • In the PC’s sound settings, choose the soundbar’s microphone as the input device, not only as the speaker output.
  • In the game or chat application, select the same microphone and verify its input meter responds when you speak.
  • Check application permissions and push-to-talk controls if the meter remains inactive.

Remove overlapping voice processing

Communication applications, operating-system drivers, and the soundbar may each apply noise suppression, echo cancellation, automatic gain, or voice enhancement. Temporarily disable duplicate processing and test a short recording. ASUS specifically points to overlapping noise suppression or enhancement as a possible cause on the ROG Gjallar; lowering its AI Noise Reduction can produce more natural voice capture. Re-enable features one at a time after the microphone works so you can identify which processing stage causes the problem.

When a different model’s mic still fails

The available evidence does not establish one cross-brand microphone fix. Look in that model’s documentation for its mute control, supported USB or Bluetooth profiles, companion software, firmware requirements, and microphone placement guidance. Do not assume a firmware update will resolve the problem unless the manufacturer documents that fix.

6. Isolate the failing component

Isolation is more reliable than changing several settings at once. Keep a short record of which device, input, cable, and format were used for each test.

  1. Test another source through the same soundbar input. For example, use a phone over Bluetooth or a second HDMI device. If it plays normally, the bar and that input are less likely to be the cause.
  2. Test the original console or PC on another audio device. This can reveal a muted output, incorrect format, or source-side fault.
  3. Bypass the TV when practical. A direct soundbar connection can show whether the TV’s ARC/CEC configuration is responsible.
  4. Swap one cable, not the whole setup. Retest after each change so the result identifies a component rather than creating a new combination.
  5. Compare wired and wireless operation. Clean wired audio with crackling Bluetooth points toward pairing, distance, or interference rather than the speaker drivers.

A working alternate source narrows the fault; it does not prove that every other component is defect-free. If the bar stays silent with known-good sources after the basic checks, contact the manufacturer’s support or service channel with the model number, firmware version if shown, connection type, and the tests that already passed.

Connection choices for gaming setups

Setup path Audio-return behavior Format and control considerations Microphone consideration
Console/PC → TV → ARC/eARC soundbar TV audio returns only through compatible ARC/eARC ports and enabled ARC/CEC settings TV, source, and bar must agree on the selected format; ordinary HDMI ports may not return audio Depends entirely on the soundbar model and its active mode
Console/PC → soundbar HDMI input → TV The bar receives source audio directly and may pass video to the TV Check the bar’s pass-through and gaming-format limits; select the correct numbered HDMI input Mode support is model-specific
TV/source → optical soundbar input No HDMI audio return or CEC control Optical format support varies; PCM may be a useful diagnostic on models whose manufacturer recommends it Some products disable the built-in mic in optical mode
Source → USB or Bluetooth soundbar Audio comes directly from the paired or USB host rather than the TV USB audio support and Bluetooth profiles vary by device Some gaming bars, including ROG Gjallar, support the built-in mic in USB or Bluetooth mode

When to stop troubleshooting and seek service

  • The soundbar produces no audio from multiple known-good sources and inputs after power, mute, volume, cable, and format checks.
  • Crackling persists with different suitable cables, a short wired test, and moderate source and bar levels.
  • A connector is physically loose, burnt, bent, or damaged, or the unit has suffered liquid or impact damage.
  • The microphone fails in a mode the manual explicitly supports, remains unmuted, and is absent from more than one compatible host.
  • The fault appears only with a particular TV, console, or PC even after confirming the correct output device and supported format.

Provide support with the exact model and region, connection diagram, input selected, whether the problem affects built-in TV apps and external sources, and the results of your alternate-source and cable tests. That information helps distinguish a configuration issue from a hardware repair case.

Preventing repeat failures

  • Label the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s matching port so routine cable moves do not break the return path.
  • Keep HDMI, optical, and AUX plugs free from side pressure and avoid tight bends near the connector.
  • Keep Bluetooth sources within a reasonable range and avoid placing them behind metal or inside crowded wireless cabinets.
  • Use a moderate source level and adjust listening volume on the soundbar.
  • Record which input and audio format worked after a successful setup; this makes future troubleshooting faster.
  • Keep voice-processing features simple while diagnosing a microphone, then add suppression or enhancement one feature at a time.

Bottom line

Most gaming-soundbar failures can be narrowed down by following the signal path in order: controls, input, physical port, ARC/CEC or alternate connection, audio format, cable and wireless integrity, then source isolation. Crackling calls for cable and interference checks before replacement. Microphone faults require a model-specific mode check—the ROG Gjallar, for example, supports its built-in microphones over USB and Bluetooth but not HDMI, optical, or AUX. If known-good sources remain silent or a supported microphone never appears, the manufacturer’s service channel is the appropriate next step.
