How to Fix a Gaming Mouse That Isn’t Detected or Keeps Disconnecting on Windows 10 and 11

If Windows does not detect your gaming mouse, or the pointer repeatedly drops out, start with power and connection checks before replacing anything. The correct fix depends on whether the mouse is wired USB, uses a USB wireless receiver, or pairs through Bluetooth. Work through the matching branch below, then test the mouse on another PC. That cross-test separates a failed mouse or receiver from a problem with your computer, port, adapter, or drivers.

This guide covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 10 systems may have a different update and support situation from current Windows 11 systems.

First identify how the mouse connects

Look at the mouse and the accessories that came with it. A cable plugged directly into the computer means it is a wired USB mouse. A cable-free mouse that came with a small USB dongle uses a USB wireless receiver. A mouse that appears in Windows Bluetooth settings without a dedicated dongle uses Bluetooth. Some models support more than one method; troubleshoot the method you are using now.

Connection type What to inspect first Most useful isolation test
Wired USB Cable, USB plug, computer port, and any hub Connect directly to a different USB port, bypassing the hub
USB wireless receiver Mouse power, receiver, receiver port, and pairing state Reset or reconnect the receiver, then try another port
Bluetooth Charge, pairing mode, range, Bluetooth adapter, and power settings Remove and re-add the mouse, then test the adapter and driver

Do not use a receiver reset sequence, firmware utility, or replacement dongle from another model. Those procedures and parts are model-specific. If you need one, find the exact make and model printed on the mouse or its original packaging and follow that manufacturer’s instructions.

Do these reversible checks before changing drivers

  1. Check that the mouse has power. Turn it on if it has a switch. Look for an indicator light, then charge a rechargeable model or fit fresh batteries in a battery-powered model. Confirm that the battery is seated correctly.
  2. Inspect the cable and plug. Look for cuts, kinks, crushed sections, or a connector that feels loose. A damaged cable can cause both total failure and brief disconnects.
  3. Clear the sensor. Dirt blocking the optical sensor can make the pointer appear dead even when the connection is working. Wipe the sensor area and use a clean, suitable surface.
  4. Reconnect once. Unplug the mouse or receiver, wait briefly so Windows can unload the device, and reconnect it firmly. Watch for a light, a Windows connection sound, or pointer movement.

If there are no lights and no cursor movement, Microsoft’s general Windows guidance is to connect the device to another PC and verify whether it works there. That test is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling software on the original computer.

Fix a wired USB gaming mouse

Try a different USB port

Disconnect the mouse and plug it into another USB port on the computer. Prefer a port directly on the PC rather than one on a keyboard, monitor, or other accessory. A single port can be damaged, disabled, or unable to provide a stable connection even when the mouse itself is fine.

Bypass every USB hub

If the cable runs through a hub, dock, or monitor, remove that device from the path and connect the mouse straight to the computer. A hub can be underpowered or malfunctioning. If the mouse works directly but not through the hub, the mouse is not the first part to replace; investigate the hub’s power and connections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reconnect after Windows unloads the device

Unplug the mouse, wait several seconds, and reconnect it. This gives Windows time to release the previous USB device instance. If the mouse returns only after this step but later disappears again, continue with the port, cable, and another-PC tests rather than treating the temporary recovery as a permanent fix.

Separate a cable fault from a computer fault

Connect the mouse to another computer. Install the mouse maker’s required driver there if the model needs one. A mouse that works on the second PC points toward the original computer’s USB ports, hub path, or drivers. A mouse that fails on both computers is more likely to have a damaged cable, electronics, or other device fault; replacement may be necessary.

Fix a USB wireless mouse that is not detected

Reconnect the receiver

Remove the USB wireless receiver, wait about 10 seconds, and plug it back in. Microsoft specifically gives this interval for USB wireless devices. Try a different USB port if Windows still does not detect it, and avoid routing the receiver through an unpowered hub.

Check for a reset or pairing control

Some mice or receivers have a reset or pairing button. Use it only according to the instructions for the exact model. Button locations, timing, indicator-light patterns, and compatible replacement receivers differ between models. Do not assume that a receiver from a similar-looking mouse will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the mouse’s own power

A receiver can be present and visible to Windows while the mouse remains unresponsive because its battery is empty or incorrectly fitted. Charge the mouse or install fresh batteries, turn it on, and keep it close to the receiver while checking the connection.

Use another PC to identify the failed side

Test the mouse and receiver together on another PC. If the set works there, examine the original PC’s USB ports, hub, and drivers. If it fails on the second PC as well, consult the mouse maker about model-specific pairing, firmware, warranty, or a compatible receiver. A generic receiver is not a safe substitute when compatibility has not been established.

Fix a Bluetooth gaming mouse that keeps disconnecting

Confirm charge, range, and pairing mode

  1. Charge the mouse or fit fresh batteries.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on in Windows and place the mouse in its documented pairing mode.
  3. Keep the mouse within normal working range of the computer while pairing.
  4. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices in Windows 10, and check whether the mouse is listed.

If the mouse appears but will not connect, remove it from the Bluetooth device list and add it again. In Windows 11, select the device’s menu and choose Remove device, then select Add device > Bluetooth. In Windows 10, select the mouse and choose Remove device, then use Add Bluetooth or other device. Put the mouse back into pairing mode when Windows searches.

Check the Bluetooth adapter

A missing or greyed-out Bluetooth control can indicate a hardware, driver, or firmware problem. Check the computer manufacturer’s support information for the Bluetooth adapter and install the applicable driver or firmware update. If the computer uses a separate adapter, make sure it is fully inserted and recognized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review Bluetooth power saving

Repeated drops can occur when Windows powers down the Bluetooth adapter. Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, open the adapter’s Properties, and inspect the Power Management tab for an option that allows Windows to turn off the device to save power. If that option is present, clear it, apply the change, and restart Windows. The wording and available tabs can vary by adapter and driver.

Restart Bluetooth Support Service

Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. Find Bluetooth Support Service, right-click it, and choose Restart. If the service is stopped, choose Start. Then try the mouse again. If the service cannot start, the adapter driver or computer manufacturer’s Bluetooth package may need attention.

Update or reinstall the adapter driver

In Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the adapter, and choose Update driver. Use the computer manufacturer’s current package when Windows does not find a suitable update. If the adapter is listed with an error, record that status before removing anything; an incorrect driver removal can leave you without Bluetooth until another input device or installer is available.

Rule out USB 3.0 interference

Microsoft notes that an unshielded USB device connected to a USB 3.0 port can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth. This is worth checking when the mouse pairs but drops whenever a nearby USB device is active. Move the Bluetooth mouse, its adapter, or the nearby USB device farther from the USB 3.0 port and test again. For a Bluetooth mouse, this is a radio-environment check, not a reason to replace the mouse immediately.

Use the symptoms to choose the next branch

What you observe Most likely area to investigate next Next action
No light, no pointer, and no response on two PCs Mouse power, cable, battery compartment, or internal hardware Check power once more, then contact the maker or consider replacement
Works on another PC but not the original Original PC port, hub, Bluetooth adapter, or driver Use a direct port, update the relevant driver, and inspect adapter settings
Wired mouse works in one port only Computer USB port or hub path Use the working direct port and have the faulty port assessed
Receiver mouse returns after a 10-second unplug Receiver state, port, or pairing Reconnect it fully, try another port, and follow model-specific pairing instructions
Bluetooth mouse is listed but will not connect Pairing record, charge, range, or adapter Remove and re-add the device, then check the adapter and driver
Bluetooth drops near a USB 3.0 device Local USB radio interference Separate the devices and retest

Read the result of each test carefully

Intermittent behavior is useful evidence. If moving from a hub to a direct port cures the problem, leave the mouse on the direct port while you investigate the hub’s power and cable. If only one computer’s Bluetooth fails, the mouse is less likely to be the failed component; concentrate on that computer’s adapter, service, power setting, and driver. If the mouse and receiver fail together on two computers, software on the first PC is unlikely to explain the result.

Keep the same mouse, receiver or cable, and batteries during a comparison whenever possible. Changing several parts at once can hide the cause. For Bluetooth, complete an actual pairing on the second PC; a light on the mouse alone does not prove that its radio connection is working.

Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Replacing the mouse before cross-testing: a bad USB port, hub, or host Bluetooth adapter can make a good mouse look defective.
  • Using a generic wireless dongle: receiver compatibility is model-specific, so a physically similar part may not pair.
  • Skipping power checks: a discharged battery or incorrectly seated cell can mimic a receiver or Bluetooth failure.
  • Removing a driver without recording its status: note any Device Manager error first, because removing the wrong package can leave you without Bluetooth.
  • Assuming every Bluetooth menu is identical: Windows 10 and Windows 11 use different Settings paths, and adapter drivers can expose different tabs.
  • Ignoring nearby USB 3.0 hardware: an unshielded device can contribute to Bluetooth drops, so move it before buying new hardware.

Cross-test before buying a replacement

Testing on another PC is the most informative replacement check in Microsoft’s general Windows guidance. Use the same mouse, cable or receiver, and power source where possible. For Bluetooth, pair it with the second PC rather than testing only whether the light turns on.

  • Works on the second PC: concentrate on the original computer. For a wired or receiver model, compare direct USB ports with the previous hub or port. For Bluetooth, check adapter availability, power management, service state, drivers, and nearby USB 3.0 devices.
  • Fails on the second PC: the mouse, cable, battery compartment, or receiver is more likely to be at fault. Contact the mouse maker for model-specific reset, firmware, compatible receiver, and warranty information.
  • Receiver fails but the mouse appears healthy: do not order a generic dongle. Compatibility depends on the exact model, and availability is not established without that model information.

When replacement makes sense

Replace the gaming mouse only after power checks, a direct connection, receiver or Bluetooth troubleshooting, and the second-PC test indicate that the device itself has failed. A new mouse will not repair a defective computer USB port, a failing host Bluetooth adapter, a broken hub, a missing driver, or an incorrectly paired receiver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing a replacement, compare the connection type you actually need, Windows compatibility, whether a wireless receiver is included, and whether that receiver is compatible with the specific mouse. Also compare the cost of a replacement with any repair or warranty option for the existing model. Warranty terms, repair prices, and model inventories vary and are not established by the general Windows guidance.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 support context

The Microsoft mouse troubleshooting guidance used here applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a computer that remains on Windows 10 may not receive the same ongoing updates or manufacturer support as a current Windows 11 installation. If Bluetooth controls, services, or drivers are missing, check the PC manufacturer’s documentation for the exact Windows version and adapter model rather than assuming the mouse is defective.

A concise recovery checklist

  1. Identify wired USB, USB receiver, or Bluetooth.
  2. Confirm power, charge or batteries, cable condition, and a clean sensor.
  3. Reconnect the device; for a receiver, wait about 10 seconds before plugging it back in.
  4. Try another direct USB port and remove any hub from the path.
  5. For Bluetooth, verify range and pairing mode, remove and re-add the mouse, then check adapter power settings, Bluetooth Support Service, and drivers.
  6. Move nearby unshielded USB 3.0 devices if Bluetooth drops continue.
  7. Test the complete mouse setup on another PC.
  8. Use the exact model’s manufacturer instructions for firmware, reset, pairing, or replacement-receiver decisions.

“For USB wireless devices, this might be as simple as unplugging the USB wireless receiver, waiting for about 10 seconds, and then plugging the USB wireless receiver back into the USB port.” — Microsoft Support, Mouse and keyboard problems in Windows

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my gaming mouse not detected even though it has power?

Power only proves that the mouse is receiving electricity. Try another direct USB port, bypass any hub, reconnect the device, and test the complete setup on another PC. A working result on the second PC points to the original computer, port, hub, adapter, or driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should I unplug a USB wireless mouse receiver?

Microsoft recommends unplugging the receiver, waiting about 10 seconds, and plugging it back in. If that does not help, try another direct USB port and follow the exact mouse model’s pairing instructions.

Can I use any replacement wireless receiver?

No. Receiver compatibility is model-specific. Check the mouse maker’s documentation for a compatible part instead of buying a generic dongle or one from a similar-looking mouse.

What should I do when a Bluetooth mouse keeps disconnecting?

Check charge, range, and pairing mode; remove and re-add the mouse in Windows; inspect the Bluetooth adapter’s power-saving setting; restart Bluetooth Support Service; and update the adapter driver. Also move nearby unshielded USB 3.0 devices that could cause interference.

How do I know whether the mouse or my PC is faulty?

Connect the mouse, its receiver or cable, and its power source to another PC. If it works there, investigate the original PC. If it fails there too, contact the mouse maker about hardware, firmware, warranty, or a compatible replacement receiver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I replace the mouse after one disconnect?

Not usually. Start with reversible power, cable, port, hub, receiver, Bluetooth, and interference checks. Replace it only after cross-testing indicates that the mouse, cable, battery compartment, or receiver itself has failed.

Why is the Bluetooth switch missing or greyed out in Windows?

Microsoft indicates that a missing or greyed-out Bluetooth control can point to a hardware, driver, or firmware issue. Check the PC manufacturer’s support page for the adapter and the Windows version, then install the applicable driver or firmware package.

Do Windows 10 and Windows 11 use the same Bluetooth steps?

The troubleshooting principles are the same, but the Settings paths differ. Windows 11 uses Settings > Bluetooth & devices; Windows 10 uses Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices. Adapter tabs and wording can also vary by driver.

The Bottom Line

Identify the connection type, verify power, bypass hubs, reconnect or re-pair the device, and test it on another PC before spending money. That cross-test tells you whether to pursue the mouse maker or the original computer’s USB, Bluetooth, or driver problem.
