If your gaming headset has no sound or other players cannot hear your microphone, start with the controls and signal path before replacing anything. A headset can be connected yet silent because it is muted, turned down, assigned to the wrong output, set to the wrong game/chat balance, denied microphone access, or connected in a mode that does not carry every function. Work through power and mute, connection, output selection, game/chat routing, microphone settings, wireless interference, and cross-testing in that order.
Use this order to find the fault quickly
The same symptom can have several causes, and wired, USB-wireless, Bluetooth, PC, and console headsets do not expose identical controls. Follow the sequence below, stopping when the problem is fixed.

- Confirm power, charge, mute, and volume. Turn the headset off and on. For a wireless model, check its battery or charging indicator. Inspect the physical mute button, inline switch, and any flip-up boom-microphone mute. Raise the headset volume and the platform volume.
- Verify the connection. Reseat a wired plug at both ends. For a USB-wireless model, reseat the transmitter and power-cycle the headset. For Bluetooth, confirm that the headset is connected for audio rather than merely listed as a previously paired device.
- Select the correct output. In the computer, console, game, and voice-chat application, choose the headset as the playback device. Do not assume that connecting a headset automatically changes every output.
- Separate game and chat checks. Game audio and voice chat may use different devices or independent balance controls. Test each one and adjust the headset’s GAME/CHAT mix if it has one.
- Test the microphone independently. Choose the headset microphone as the input, allow microphone access, check the input meter or level, and make sure the physical mute is off.
- Cross-test before replacing hardware. Try the headset on another compatible source and a known-good headset on the original source. The result tells you whether to investigate the headset or the computer, console, port, or application.
Identify your connection path first
Write down the actual path carrying sound before changing settings. A headset may have more than one radio or cable active, and the path that carries playback may not be the path selected for the microphone.
| Connection | Checks that matter most | Common limitation |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm wired | Plug fully inserted at the headset and controller or computer; correct jack; system output and input selection | A four-pole headset plug, splitter, controller jack, and computer jack may not support the same microphone wiring |
| USB wired | USB cable and port; operating-system playback and recording device; headset mute and volume | The computer may keep another USB or monitor device as the default output |
| USB wireless adapter | Transmitter seated and paired; headset charged; correct adapter mode; nearby wireless and USB 3.0 interference | Some models use separate game and chat routes or a switch that must be set for PC or console |
| Bluetooth | Active Bluetooth connection; selected playback and microphone profiles; application permissions | Call or hands-free mode can change quality and microphone behavior; some gaming devices do not support every function over Bluetooth |
| Dual connection | Which device owns playback and which owns the microphone; temporary disconnection of the second device | Some models route calls or chat to Bluetooth while game audio remains on a 2.4 GHz adapter |
1. Check power, mute, and volume at every level
Restart and charge
Power the headset off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. A wireless headset can show as connected while its battery is too low for normal operation. Charge it with the specified cable or dock, then test again. If it shuts down immediately after removing the charger, leave it charging long enough to establish whether the battery is the cause.

Inspect every mute control
Check the headset’s mute button, inline control, detachable boom switch, and flip-up boom position. A flip-up microphone often mutes automatically when raised. Also check the controller, keyboard, console, or chat application for a separate mute state. A muted microphone does not explain missing game audio, but it commonly explains “they cannot hear mine.”
Raise volume without masking a routing problem
Turn up the headset’s own wheel or buttons and the system volume. If only one side of a game/chat mix is missing, do not keep raising the master volume; inspect the balance control instead. A very low chat channel can sound like a failed microphone or a silent game.
2. Reseat the physical connection and confirm the route
Wired headsets
Remove and reinsert the plug firmly at the headset, controller, or computer. Examine the connector for debris or visible damage. If the headset uses a detachable cable, reseat that end too. Confirm that you are using the intended audio jack rather than a line-in, microphone-only, or charging port. On a desktop, a headset may require the correct combined jack or an appropriate splitter for separate headphone and microphone sockets.

USB wireless headsets
Unplug and reconnect the transmitter, then power-cycle the headset. Confirm that the transmitter and headset are paired and that any PC/console or GAME/CHAT switch is in the position required by the current device. Remove unused wireless adapters temporarily so you can identify the active one. If the transmitter is connected through a hub, test a direct port because hubs can introduce power or connection problems.
Bluetooth headsets
Open the device’s Bluetooth list and verify that the headset is connected now, not just remembered. Disconnect it from unused phones, tablets, or computers while testing. A Bluetooth headset may expose separate playback and call profiles; the application can continue using the old profile unless you select the current one.
3. Select the playback device explicitly
Windows PC
Open Settings > System > Sound and inspect the Output section. Choose the headset rather than the monitor, speakers, controller, or another Bluetooth device. Use the output-device troubleshooting option if Windows offers it. Then check the individual game and voice application: many programs keep their own output selection even after the system default changes.
Play a known system sound before launching the game. If Windows produces sound through the headset but the game does not, the remaining fault is usually the game’s output choice, its voice-chat configuration, or its volume mixer. If no application produces sound, return to the physical connection, device selection, driver or firmware guidance supplied for that model, and cross-testing.

PlayStation consoles
Open the console’s sound settings and choose the connected headset for output and chat. Labels differ between console generations and headset models, so use the wording shown on your screen. For a wireless adapter, verify that the adapter is connected to the console and that the headset is paired to it. If the console sees the adapter but audio is absent, reseat the adapter and restart both devices.
In-game and voice-chat settings
Games and chat apps can override the operating-system or console default. In each one, select the headset for output and the headset microphone for input, then check its master, effects, voice, and chat volumes. Make a short local recording or use the application’s microphone test where available.
4. Fix game-versus-chat imbalance
Many gaming headsets expose separate GAME and CHAT controls. If game music is audible but people in chat are silent, increase the chat side or verify that chat is not assigned to another output. If chat works but the game is missing, reverse that check. A balance wheel can be rotated accidentally during play, and some consoles provide a software balance control as well.
PlayStation documents model-specific CHAT/GAME controls. On supported headsets, a simultaneous button press can reset the balance to its default position; use the exact combination in your model’s guide rather than guessing, because controls differ. Sony’s INZONE guidance likewise treats game and chat as separate outputs on supported configurations. Those instructions are examples for the named models, not a universal recipe for every headset.

5. Troubleshoot a microphone that is silent, faint, or intermittent
Start with the hardware mute and boom position
Toggle the physical mute once, lower and raise a flip-up boom, and check for a mute indicator. If the microphone is detachable, remove and firmly reconnect it. Keep the boom near your mouth but not touching it; a distant microphone can appear dead when its level is simply too low.
Select the input and permit access
In the platform’s sound controls, select the headset microphone as the input. In Windows, check Settings > System > Sound for the Input device and input level. Also review the operating system’s microphone privacy permissions and the game or chat application’s own microphone permission. On a console, inspect the accessory and microphone settings and confirm that the account is not muted in the party or game.

Watch the input meter
Speak while observing the platform or application input meter. If the meter moves but other players hear nothing, the problem is likely the application’s chat device, party mute, or game voice settings. If the meter never moves, return to the mute, selected input, connection mode, and compatibility checks.
Account for separate chat hardware
On supported Sony INZONE configurations, a headset can be connected to a PC or PlayStation through 2.4 GHz while Bluetooth is also connected to a phone. During a phone call or voice chat, the microphone may be assigned to the Bluetooth call device, so PC or PlayStation chat cannot receive it. Disconnect Bluetooth temporarily and test the PC or console path. This is a documented behavior for those INZONE models, not a rule that applies to every dual-connected headset.
6. Reduce wireless interference before blaming the headset
Wireless problems often appear as missing audio, dropouts, robotic voice, or a microphone that works only intermittently. Firmly seat the USB adapter, remove unused adapters, and move nearby wireless devices away for a test. Keep the headset within the range recommended by its manufacturer and avoid hiding the adapter behind a metal computer case or dense cable bundle.
PlayStation specifically suggests using a USB extension cable to create distance between a wireless adapter and USB 3.0 devices when interference is suspected. This is an optional accessory for that situation only. It cannot correct a mute state, wrong output selection, missing microphone permission, unsupported compatibility, or broken hardware. Confirm the connector, port, and power requirements before using one.
7. Cross-test the headset and the source
Once basic settings are correct, isolate the failing component instead of repeatedly changing menus.

|---|---|---|
| Headset on another compatible computer or console | The same sound or microphone fault follows the headset | Headset mute, cable, boom, transmitter, pairing, firmware guidance, or internal hardware |
| Known-good headset on the original source | The replacement also fails | Source output/input settings, port, application, account mute, or console/computer hardware |
| Headset works through one connection but not another | For example, wired playback works but Bluetooth does not | The failing connection mode, profile, adapter, compatibility, or routing |
| Playback works but microphone fails everywhere | Other devices also cannot receive your voice | Physical mute, boom or cable, microphone input hardware, or a model-specific connection requirement |
| Microphone works in a recorder but not in a game | The platform sees input, but chat does not | Game or party input selection, permissions, account mute, and voice-chat channel settings |
Use compatible devices for the comparison. A headset that needs a USB transmitter cannot be judged by plugging only its microphone into an unsupported analog jack, and a console may not support every Bluetooth audio profile.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Reset or update only with model-specific instructions
Do not guess a factory-reset button combination. Reset behavior, firmware tools, pairing procedures, and indicator meanings vary by model. First record which connection worked, which device was selected, and whether the problem followed the headset. Then follow the maker’s instructions for that exact model. A reset can erase pairing information without fixing a damaged cable, failed microphone, incompatible port, or incorrect application setting.

Support can distinguish a known compatibility issue from a hardware failure and advise whether a replacement cable, microphone, transmitter, or headset is appropriate.
Common symptoms and the shortest useful branch
“My headset has no sound”
Check power, charge, mute, headset volume, physical seating, and the selected output. If another device plays sound, inspect the game’s output and volume mixer. If nothing plays anywhere, cross-test before replacing the headset.
“There is no sound, but chat works”
Set the game output to the headset, center the GAME/CHAT balance, and check the game’s master and effects volume. A separate chat path proves only that part of the connection is working.
“The sound is too low”
Raise the headset and system volumes independently, then inspect game/chat balance. Check for a low application volume or a Bluetooth call profile that changes playback behavior. Distortion after increasing volume can indicate an overloaded or damaged source rather than a setting that needs to go higher.
“They cannot hear mine”
Toggle the physical mute, select the headset microphone, allow access, watch the input meter, and check party or game mute status. If the meter never moves, test another connection or compatible device. If it moves but chat remains silent, select the microphone again inside the game or chat application.
Only one side of the headset works
Reseat the plug or detachable cable, center the game/chat balance, and test another source. A one-sided result that follows the headset points toward the cable, connector, or earcup hardware; a result that stays with one source points toward its jack or settings.

What not to replace prematurely
A new headset, boom microphone, wireless transmitter, or audio adapter cannot be chosen responsibly without knowing the model and platform. First determine whether the fault is routing, mute, permissions, interference, connection compatibility, or hardware. The one narrowly useful accessory in this workflow is a USB extension cable when a wireless adapter is being affected by nearby USB 3.0 equipment; it is not a general cure.
Quick Recap
