How to Fix a Gaming Controller That Isn’t Recognized by Windows 10 or 11

Start by separating two problems: Windows may not detect the controller at all, or Windows may detect it while a particular game does not support or select it. For a wired controller, try another USB port, inspect Device Manager for an error code, and test a known-compatible data cable if the cable is detachable. For a Bluetooth controller, confirm that the PC has working Bluetooth, charge and power on the controller, put it in pairing mode, then remove and add it again in Settings.

These checks apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but Microsoft’s hardware and Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance still explains the relevant detection and driver checks. Menus can differ slightly by Windows release.

Identify exactly where recognition fails

Do not begin by reinstalling random drivers. First identify the connection method and the point at which the controller disappears. A controller can connect by USB, Bluetooth, or a dedicated wireless receiver, and each path has different failure points.

What you observe Most likely area to check first First action
Nothing changes when a wired controller is connected USB port, cable, controller electronics, or USB device driver Connect directly to a different USB port and inspect Device Manager
Windows reports that the last USB device malfunctioned USB connection or device status Note the Device Manager error code and try another port
A Bluetooth controller never appears in Add device Bluetooth capability, power, range, or pairing mode Turn on PC Bluetooth, charge the controller, and enter pairing mode
The controller appears in Windows but one game ignores it Game support or in-game configuration Verify that the game supports controllers and follow its current setup instructions
A dedicated wireless receiver is not detected Receiver USB connection or receiver-specific driver Treat the receiver as a USB device, try another port, and use the manufacturer’s model-specific support

Check whether the problem affects every game or only one. If Windows cannot list the device, game settings cannot fix the discovery problem. If Windows lists it and other software can use it, focus on the affected game instead.

Prepare a safe diagnostic test

  • Use the controller’s exact make and model when looking for documentation. Different revisions can use different pairing buttons, firmware, or wireless standards.
  • For the first USB test, connect directly to the computer rather than through a hub or dock. A direct connection removes an extra power and data path from the test.
  • Keep the controller close to the PC during Bluetooth pairing and temporarily disconnect other nearby Bluetooth devices if pairing becomes confusing.
  • Do not install a generic “driver updater” or unrelated utility. If the device remains faulty, use the controller maker’s support page for the exact model.
  • Record what Windows says before changing anything. The wording and error code in Device Manager can identify whether the failure is a driver problem or a device-specific fault.

Fix a wired USB controller

1. Try another direct USB port

Unplug the controller, wait a few seconds, and connect it directly to a different USB port. Microsoft’s USB troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends trying another port for a recognition error. Avoid a hub for this test, because a hub can introduce its own power, cable, or driver problem.

If the controller works in one port but not another, the controller may be fine and the original port, hub, or port hardware is the likely cause. Test another known-good USB device in the suspect port to distinguish a port problem from a controller problem.

2. Check Device Manager and the device status

Open Device Manager from the Start menu search. Expand the categories that contain human-interface or USB devices and look for the controller, an unknown device, or an entry with a yellow warning icon. The exact category and name depend on the controller and its driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the entry’s properties and read the Device status text and error code. Microsoft advises noting that code and following the corresponding Device Manager guidance. An error code is more useful than repeatedly unplugging the controller because it tells you whether Windows loaded a driver, rejected the device, or encountered a hardware fault.

If the entry appears only while the controller is connected, Windows is at least seeing an electrical USB connection. If no entry changes at all across multiple ports, suspect the cable, the controller’s USB socket, or the controller hardware rather than a game setting.

3. Eliminate a bad or charge-only cable

For a controller with a detachable cable, try a known-compatible USB data cable with the correct connector. A cable that supplies power but has no data conductors can light the controller while leaving Windows unable to enumerate it. This is a practical diagnostic inference from general USB troubleshooting; the cited Microsoft guidance is USB-focused and does not test every controller cable design.

Match the connector shape and specification instead of forcing a plug. If you buy a replacement, search for a “USB data cable for gaming controller” and confirm the connector and data capability before ordering. A cable replacement cannot solve a Bluetooth pairing issue, a missing Bluetooth adapter, a game configuration problem, or a failed controller board.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Reconnect after recording the error

After recording the Device Manager status, disconnect the controller, restart Windows, and reconnect it to the alternate port. A restart can clear a device state that survived a simple unplug. If the same code returns, use that code to follow Microsoft’s Device Manager instructions rather than deleting unrelated devices.

5. Test on another computer when available

A second computer is a useful isolation test. If the controller fails on several ports and on another computer with a known-good data cable, the fault is probably in the controller or cable. If it works elsewhere, concentrate on the original PC’s USB hardware, Windows drivers, or configuration.

6. Use the manufacturer’s support only for the exact model

When the controller still fails across ports and with a compatible data cable, consult its manufacturer for model-specific firmware, supported Windows versions, connection modes, and warranty options. There is no universal controller firmware procedure: the correct button combination, updater, and recovery method vary by model.

Fix a Bluetooth controller that is not showing up

1. Confirm that the PC can use Bluetooth

Check that the computer has Bluetooth hardware and that Bluetooth is turned on in Windows. If Bluetooth controls are missing entirely, the PC may lack built-in Bluetooth or its adapter may not be working. A desktop can require an internal adapter or an external USB Bluetooth adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An external adapter is relevant only when the PC lacks working Bluetooth hardware or its built-in adapter has failed. Before buying one, verify that the adapter and controller support compatible Bluetooth behavior. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish universal compatibility between every adapter and every controller.

2. Prepare the controller for pairing

  • Charge the controller sufficiently and switch it on.
  • Put it into its actual Bluetooth pairing mode. The required button or button combination is model-specific; check the controller’s manual or manufacturer support page.
  • Keep it close to the computer while pairing.
  • Turn off or move the controller away from another device that may automatically reconnect to it.

A controller that is powered on but not in pairing mode usually will not appear as a new device. A controller that is already connected to a phone, console, or another PC may also be unavailable for a new pairing.

3. Add it through the correct Windows Settings path

In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device, choose Bluetooth, and select the controller when it appears. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Add Bluetooth or other device, choose Bluetooth, and select the controller. Labels can vary slightly by release.

Windows normally detects hardware automatically, but Bluetooth devices generally must be powered on, nearby, and discoverable before they can be added. If the controller does not appear, leave the Add device window open while repeating the controller’s pairing sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Remove and add the controller again

If the controller is listed but will not connect, remove it from the Bluetooth device list and add it again. This clears the old pairing record and creates a new one. Power-cycle the controller between removal and re-pairing, then return it to pairing mode.

  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Do not repeatedly add multiple entries with nearly identical names. Remove stale entries first so you can tell which newly discovered device belongs to the controller.

5. Update or reinstall the Bluetooth adapter driver

If Bluetooth is absent, unstable, or marked with a warning icon in Device Manager, update the Bluetooth driver through Device Manager or Windows Update. Restart the PC after the update and try pairing again.

Microsoft also describes reinstalling the Bluetooth adapter driver when updating does not help. Use Device Manager’s Bluetooth adapter entry and follow Windows’ own uninstall and hardware-detection prompts; do not remove unrelated USB or network devices. For a model-specific driver, check the computer manufacturer’s support page, because laptop and desktop makers can customize the adapter package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Reduce USB 3.0 interference

Microsoft notes that some USB 3.0 devices can interfere with nearby Bluetooth connections. If pairing is erratic or the controller disconnects when a USB 3.0 drive or hub is close to the adapter, temporarily move the controller or Bluetooth adapter away from that device. A short extension cable can help position an external adapter farther from a busy USB port, but it does not repair an incompatible adapter or controller.

When Windows sees the controller but a game does not

This is a different problem from Windows device discovery. If the controller appears in Windows Bluetooth settings or Device Manager, but one game ignores it, first verify that the game supports the controller type. Some games provide no direct controller support, while others require a controller option to be enabled or a specific input mode.

Test the controller in Windows before changing game files. Then open the particular game’s current documentation or settings and look for controller enablement, input-device selection, and button mapping. Do not apply instructions written for a different title or an old controller API without checking the game’s current version.

Microsoft’s controller-specific article cited for this distinction covers legacy editions of Flight Simulator X. Its detailed steps should not be presented as universal instructions for modern games. The transferable point is the diagnostic split: confirm Windows detection first, then verify support and configuration inside the game.

Signs the game is the problem

  • The controller appears consistently in Windows but fails only in one title.
  • Another game can use the same controller on the same PC.
  • The affected game has an input-device menu, controller toggle, or separate button-mapping screen that has not been configured.
  • The game’s documentation lists only certain controller standards or editions.

Signs Windows is still the problem

  • The controller disappears from Windows whenever it is unplugged and reconnected.
  • Bluetooth Settings never lists it even when the controller is in pairing mode.
  • Device Manager shows an unknown device or a warning code.
  • Every game fails to receive input.

Dedicated wireless receivers need their own check

Some controllers use a dedicated USB receiver rather than Bluetooth. Start with the receiver, not the controller’s Bluetooth pairing procedure. Plug the receiver directly into another USB port, watch Device Manager for a new or warning-marked device, and test the receiver on another computer if possible.

Receiver-based systems can require a model-specific pairing process or driver. Use the controller maker’s documentation for that exact receiver and controller combination. Do not assume that a generic Bluetooth adapter can replace a proprietary receiver; the available guidance does not establish that kind of universal substitution.

USB versus Bluetooth: choose the next test

Connection Windows failure point What to verify Purchase caution
USB cable Cable, port, hub, controller USB socket, or device driver Direct connection, alternate port, Device Manager status and error code For a detachable cable, match the connector and require USB data capability
Bluetooth PC Bluetooth hardware, adapter driver, power, range, pairing mode, or stale pairing record Bluetooth enabled, charged controller, discoverable mode, remove and re-add process Buy an adapter only if the PC lacks working Bluetooth and compatibility is confirmed
Dedicated receiver Receiver USB path, receiver driver, or model-specific pairing Alternate USB port, Device Manager entry, exact receiver documentation A generic Bluetooth adapter is not proven to replace a proprietary receiver

Common mistakes that waste time

Replacing hardware before checking the error

The message “The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it” does not by itself prove that the controller is dead. Try another port and inspect Device Manager first.

Using a charging cable as a data test

Power lights are not proof of data connectivity. A charge-only cable can make a controller appear powered while Windows receives no device data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pairing without clearing an old connection

A controller can remain linked to another device or retain a broken Windows pairing record. Remove the old Windows entry, power-cycle the controller, and pair it again nearby.

Installing an unrelated driver package

Generic driver utilities can introduce an incompatible package and make diagnosis harder. Use Windows Update, Device Manager, or the computer manufacturer’s support page for the Bluetooth adapter, and the controller maker’s support page for controller-specific software.

Blaming Windows when only one game fails

A game can omit controller support or require a different input mode even while Windows detects the device correctly. Verify the game’s current support and configuration before changing system drivers.

When to escalate the fault

Escalate to the controller manufacturer when the device is absent on multiple USB ports or computers, remains listed with a device-specific fault, or repeatedly loses its connection after the Windows and pairing checks above. Have the exact model, connection method, Windows version, Device Manager code, and tests already performed ready for support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the manufacturer about supported Windows versions, firmware availability, approved cables or receivers, and warranty service. Because controller designs differ, a universal firmware reset or button sequence would be unsafe to recommend without the model.

After the controller works

  • Keep the controller’s pairing record limited to devices you actually use; remove obsolete entries when troubleshooting future connections.
  • Label a known-good data cable so it is not confused with charge-only cables.
  • Keep Windows and the PC maker’s Bluetooth driver current through normal Windows Update and manufacturer support channels.
  • Save the game’s controller-support page or settings path for the specific title, since game input support can differ from Windows detection.
