A game launched through a storefront and a publisher launcher can fail during the handoff, so the correct fix depends on the game, both launchers, your operating system and the exact message or behavior.
1. Record the exact launch symptom
Do not begin by reinstalling the game. First write down what happens when you select Play. The symptom determines which branch of troubleshooting is useful and gives support staff something specific to investigate.

- Nothing happens: the button returns to its previous state without an error.
- Briefly shows “Running”: the launcher changes state for a few seconds and then returns to Play.
- Launcher handoff fails: a second launcher opens, closes, or reports that the game is not owned.
- Explicit error: record the complete wording, including capitalization and any code.
- Crash: note whether the crash occurs before a window appears, at a splash screen, or after reaching a menu.
- Stuck preparing: the launcher remains on a preparation or startup message indefinitely.
Also note the game name, edition, storefront launcher, publisher launcher (if any), operating-system version, and whether the game worked previously. Record whether the failure began after an update, account change, driver change or move to another storage location. Take a screenshot of an error before closing it. Launcher interfaces and support procedures can change, so the labels you see may not exactly match older instructions.

A third-party shortcut can bypass the entitlement check that the storefront expects. Epic Games Store support specifically documents an “Application not owned” error when a game is started from a desktop shortcut or another launcher.

- Open the storefront that holds the installation.
- Sign out and back in if there is any doubt about the account. Confirm that this account purchased, redeemed or received access to the game.
- Open the storefront’s Library, find the game and start it from that library entry rather than from a desktop shortcut.
- If a publisher launcher opens, sign in with the account linked to the storefront entitlement. Do not assume that a different account in the publisher launcher can use the same license.
- Check the service-status page for the storefront and publisher launcher. An outage or account-service interruption can look like a local installation problem.
- Install pending updates for both launchers, then restart them and test the library launch again.
Check the account in every launcher, not just the one whose window appears first. A family member’s account, an alternate regional account or an account created during an earlier installation can leave the game installed while the current session has no entitlement. If the storefront library does not show the game at all, resolve the account or purchase issue first; repairing files cannot restore missing ownership.
Do not try to bypass a publisher launcher that the game requires. A direct executable may open briefly but still fail authentication, updates or online services.
3. Follow the correct procedure for a two-launcher handoff
When a storefront starts a game that is owned and authenticated through a publisher launcher, each program must recognize the same installation and entitlement. The exact procedure is game-specific. Epic’s documented path for an Epic-launched Ubisoft game is an example, not a universal rule for every launcher combination.
Epic-launched Ubisoft games
- Update the Epic Games Launcher.
- Clear the Epic launcher cache using Epic’s current cache-clearing instructions.
- Open Ubisoft Connect and check whether the game appears in its Library.
- Exit the Epic Games Launcher completely rather than leaving it minimized in the notification area.
- Start Ubisoft Connect with administrator permission for this test.
- Launch the game from the Ubisoft Connect library.
If this sequence works, the failure was likely in the launcher handoff, cache or permission state. If it does not, return to the storefront’s library and use its file-verification option before attempting a reinstall.
Other storefront-and-publisher combinations
Do not copy the Epic-to-Ubisoft sequence blindly to another pair. Check the game publisher’s support instructions for which launcher should be open first, which account must be linked and where the installed files are managed. Keep both launchers updated, but use the launcher that actually owns the installation for repair or verification.
Some handoffs require the storefront to remain signed in while the publisher launcher performs the actual launch. Others expect the publisher launcher to be running first. If both windows appear, avoid repeatedly clicking Play; repeated requests can create several pending processes and obscure the original error. Close both launchers fully, wait for their processes to exit, then perform one clean test using the documented order.

4. Repair or verify the installed files
File verification compares local files with the launcher’s expected version and replaces damaged or missing data. It is a lower-risk step than downloading the entire game again. Epic states that verification repairs differences without affecting saved data. Electronic Arts uses the label Repair in the game tile menu.

Run the repair in the launcher that manages the installation, not merely in the publisher launcher that performs authentication. Wait for the process to finish, then restart the launcher and test once. If the tool reports that files were reacquired, allow downloads to complete before launching. A verification result that says everything is current does not rule out an account, overlay, driver or service-status problem; it simply makes damaged local files less likely.
5. Clear cache and test background software
Launchers cache account, entitlement and update data. A stale cache can keep showing an old ownership or startup state. Clear the cache only through the launcher’s current support procedure, then sign in again and retest. Cache removal should be treated as a reversible diagnostic step; it is not the same as deleting the game or save files.
After clearing a cache, the launcher may need to rebuild thumbnails, rescan installed games or download small updates. Let that process finish while the launcher is online. If the game is installed on a different drive, confirm that the launcher still points to that library location rather than creating a second, empty library.
Disable overlays temporarily
Overlays from a launcher, chat client, graphics utility or recording tool inject code into the game process. Electronic Arts warns that its in-game overlay can sometimes cause a game to crash and recommends turning it off as a test. Rockstar Games also warns that overlays and recording or sharing software can interfere with component communication.
- Close the game and both launchers.
- Disable the launcher’s in-game overlay, if that setting exists.
- Exit recording, streaming, performance-monitoring and screen-sharing applications.
- Restart the launcher and test the game once.
- Re-enable each feature after testing. If the failure returns when one feature is enabled, report that result to the feature’s support channel rather than leaving unrelated protections disabled.
Reduce other software conflicts
Temporarily close nonessential background applications, especially those that hook into games, control graphics settings or scan newly launched processes. Do not permanently disable security software without a game-specific instruction from a trusted support source. If a security product reports that it blocked a game component, preserve that event details for support and follow the product’s documented exception process.

6. Check permissions, operating-system updates and requirements
Some games cannot access required resources until they receive administrator permission. Rockstar’s PC troubleshooting guidance states that certain titles need this permission to operate fully. Use an administrator launch as a one-time diagnostic test, not as a blanket permanent setting.
- Close the game and launcher.
- Start the relevant launcher with administrator permission using your operating system’s standard context-menu option.
- Launch the game from the launcher library and note whether the result changes.
- If administrator permission fixes the issue, check the game publisher’s instructions for a permanent, least-privilege configuration before changing executable compatibility settings.
Also install pending operating-system updates and graphics-driver updates appropriate to your hardware. Compare your system with the game’s published minimum and recommended requirements, including operating-system edition, processor, memory, graphics capability and available storage. Check the drive and folder where the game is installed: it must remain available to the launcher, have enough free space for updates and be accessible to the account running the game. If the installation was moved, use the launcher’s library-management tools to locate it instead of starting an old executable path.
A game can fail before displaying a useful message when a required component or supported driver is missing. Avoid forcing compatibility modes, disabling driver protections or changing system-wide permissions without a game-specific reason. Such changes can create new problems and make later diagnosis harder.
7. Choose the next step by the symptom

8. Reinstall only after the lower-risk checks
A complete game download consumes time and bandwidth and can leave the same account or launcher problem untouched. Reinstalling should come after you have confirmed ownership, used the correct launch path, completed file verification or repair, tested cache and overlays, and checked requirements.
If launcher files themselves appear damaged, follow the launcher publisher’s current reinstall procedure. Before removing anything, confirm where local saves, screenshots, configuration files and mods are stored. Cloud synchronization is not proof that every local save has been uploaded. Remove only the component the support instructions identify, then install the current launcher version and sign in with the account that owns the game.
For a game reinstall, note the installation drive and available space first. If the launcher offers to detect existing files, use that option rather than deleting a working installation immediately. Re-test after each major change so you know whether the launcher reinstall, game-file repair or account sign-in resolved the failure.

9. Prepare an effective support request
When the sequence does not solve the problem, contact the game publisher or the launcher that owns the installation. Epic’s launcher guidance may direct unresolved cases to hardware-manufacturer support when the evidence points to a device or driver issue; EA and Rockstar also provide their own support paths.

Include one concise timeline rather than a general statement that the game “doesn’t work.” Your report should contain:
- Game title and edition.
- Storefront launcher and publisher launcher, in the order they open.
- Operating-system version and relevant hardware details.
- The account situation: which storefront account owns the game and whether accounts are linked.
- Exact error text or a description of the visible behavior.
- Whether the game ever worked on this computer and what changed before the failure.
- Results of verification or repair, cache clearing, overlay testing, administrator testing, updates and requirement checks.
- Relevant screenshots, launcher logs or crash reports requested by the support form.
Do not send passwords, authentication codes or unnecessary personal files. If support asks for logs, use the official upload method and preserve the original files until the case is closed. - Capture the symptom and exact message.
- Confirm the owning account and launch from the storefront library.
- Check service status and update every launcher involved.
- For two-launcher games, follow the publisher’s specific handoff procedure.
- Verify or repair files in the platform that manages the installation.

- Temporarily disable overlays and close recording or sharing software.

There is no single universal fix for a third-party-launcher failure. The exact game, account, launcher handoff and symptom determine the right branch; keeping each test reversible makes the cause easier to isolate.
