If a PC game will not download or install, first check the launcher’s service status, then confirm the game and destination drive are available and troubleshoot the specific symptom or error. For Epic Games Launcher, official guidance covers common cases such as a download speed dropping to 0, low disk space, and “Could not create directory.” Other launchers use different menus and error codes, so use their own support instructions rather than applying Epic-specific steps.
Start with checks that do not change files
Before clearing folders or changing network settings, identify whether the problem affects one game or several and note any exact error code or message. Start with the checks below; they can help distinguish an outage or basic setup issue from a damaged installation.

- Check the launcher’s service status. An outage can prevent downloads even when your PC is working normally. Epic includes a service-status check in its general launcher troubleshooting guide.
- Update the launcher and check PC requirements. Epic’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends making sure the launcher is up to date and the computer meets the relevant requirements. Follow the affected game and launcher’s own requirements rather than assuming they are identical.
- Confirm the account and game availability. Make sure you are signed into the account that owns or claimed the game, and that the game supports your operating system. If a title is missing from the library, check the launcher’s official instructions for account, platform, compatibility, and library-display settings.
- Check the install destination. Confirm the selected drive is connected and has enough free space for the game. If your launcher reports a specific error, use its matching support article before changing the destination or removing files.
If the download appears stuck or its speed drops to 0
Check for disk activity before stopping it
A download speed drop to 0 does not always mean the internet connection has failed. Epic says its launcher may pause network transfer while it writes already-downloaded files to disk. Check the launcher’s download graph for disk read/write activity; if the disk is still working, let that work finish before pausing or restarting the download. If the connection is genuinely slow
For Epic Games Launcher, the official slow-download checklist suggests checking service status, trying wired Ethernet or another available connection, clearing the device cache, checking that any launcher download limit is off, reviewing network allow-list settings, flushing or changing DNS, and disabling a proxy. These are Epic-specific suggestions, not universal fixes; make one change at a time and consult your network administrator before changing managed network settings. Resolve low disk space and destination-folder errors
“Out of disc space” (IS-DS01 or IS-IN-DS01)
Epic identifies IS-DS01 and IS-IN-DS01 as errors for insufficient free space. Its guidance is to free space on the target device or choose another installation directory. Check the drive selected in the launcher—not just the drive where Windows is installed—and make sure the alternate destination is available before retrying. “Could not create directory” (IS-0003)
This message points to a problem creating the install directory, which is different from simply running out of space. For Epic Games Launcher’s IS-0003 error, support recommends clearing the launcher webcache, restarting the computer, running the launcher as administrator, and trying again. Use Epic’s IS-0003 instructions for the applicable steps; do not assume this code or remedy applies to another launcher.

Use folder cleanup only for the matching error
Deleting an installation folder can remove files, so do not use it as a generic first step for a failed download. Verify the exact message, game, and folder path before proceeding, and avoid deleting a folder if you cannot confirm it belongs to the affected game.

Epic says IS-0007 may indicate a corrupt or invalid file and provides steps to remove the affected game folder and retry, with a different folder as another option. Follow the specific IS-0007 support instructions; do not remove unrelated game or launcher folders.

“Directory must be empty”
For this Epic error, support says to delete the attempted game’s installation folder, restart the launcher, and retry. Check that you have identified the attempted game’s folder—not a parent folder containing other games—before removing anything. See Epic’s “Directory must be empty” instructions.

If the issue remains after the relevant checks, provide support with the launcher name and version, game title, operating system, exact error text or code, the steps you already tried, and whether the issue affects one title or several. For Epic Games Launcher, support instructs users to reproduce the issue, enable debug logging for launcher problems, and collect recent launcher logs plus install-helper and main-service logs for install, update, verification, or uninstall problems. Follow Epic’s current log-gathering instructions before sending diagnostic files.

What to do if you use another launcher
The error codes, menus, and remedies above are for Epic Games Launcher. They should not be treated as Steam, Xbox for PC, or EA app instructions. For another launcher, check that product’s current official service-status page and support article for the exact error before clearing caches, changing permissions, or removing installation files.
